Minister Visits to Northern and Eastern Provinces

File contains correspondence regarding various Ministers' and the Prime Minister's visits to the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Includes letters written by S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, J. C. Handy, J. B. Ariyanayagam, V. N. Navaratnam, S. Sivasubramaniam, and E. M. Rasamanickam. Also includes a printed notice by Aasirvatham Henry from the ITAK Sunnagam Office addressing and asking Minister Anil Munasinghe to answer 15 questions listed in the notice during his visit to Jaffna. 

[Local government elections and new village councils]

File includes records related to the local government elections and the newly formed village councils. Includes meeting invitations, letters, a hand drawn map, The Ceylon Government Gazette (December 1963), lists of candidates and nominations, and party symbols. Also includes a letter from E. I. Ponniah regarding Kalmunai town electorate, its formation, a detailed overview of the area, and political representation issues of the Saandar caste in local government. Also includes a letter from the Chairman of the Mallikaitivu Village Council detailing the splitting of the existing village council to create two new village councils, Seruwila and Dehiwatte, and the impact of the split.

[Tamil schools - 1]

File contains records related to the situation of Tamil language schools across the country: Tamil language school closures, upgrading to Maha Vidyalaya-related issues, Tamil-speaking teachers recruitment, appointments and transfers, appointment of 2,000 Sinhalese teachers to Northern and Eastern provinces, teaching Sinhala in Tamil schools, changing the primary medium of teaching from Tamil to Sinhala in the Tamil areas, changing Tamil schools into Tamil-Sinhala schools and closure of Tamil Muslim teacher training colleges. Includes letters, typed notes, various lists of schools and a handwritten map. 

University of Toronto Governing Council

Series A, University of Toronto Governing Council, covers the years 1963 through 2002. The Governing Council is the highest governing body of the University of Toronto. In 1963, the Governing Council drafted A Provisional Plan for Two Off-Campus Colleges in the University of Toronto, which established Scarborough College (later UTSC) and also Erindale College (later the University of Toronto Mississauga, or UTM). The series includes correspondence and address lists for various council members, by-laws for the council, and council minutes from 1973 to 2002. Also included are documents relating to the opening of the College in 1964 for extension courses and the formal opening in 1966. Materials regarding the design and construction of the College, including architectural drawings, are included as well, since the Governing Council oversaw the construction of the initial buildings.

[Correspondence regarding ITAK candidate for Kopay]

File contains records related to ITAK candidate for the Kopay electorate. File includes 6 letters written by N. Tharmalingam on behalf of ITAK Youth Front, villagers of Nirveli, S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, P. Eliathamby, and K. Sivanandasuntharam. Also includes  ITAK's general election candidacy nomination form for Kopay electorate completed and signed by C. Kathiravelupillai.

File contains correspondence regarding the ITAK party branches in Vavuniya and Nedunkeni detailing branch meetings, activities and other general operational information. Also includes five letters from Nedunkeni residents [who are of Indian origin] detailing their Ceylon citizenship and food coupon issues. Also includes a letter from ITAK Nedunkeni Branch Secretary, T. M. Peter Ponkaland detailing an incident in which two Sinhalese gentlemen planning to acquire 1000-2000 acres of forest land in the Maruthodai, Unjal area to create coconut plantations. Also includes some letters related to the transfer of Sub Inspector Croos of the Mullaitivu Police. Also includes a handwritten document (5 pgs) regarding Upcountry electorates.

[ITAK branches - Upcountry]

File contains correspondence regarding the ITAK party branches in the Upcountry. Includes letters requesting party membership information and application forms, and proposals for opening new party branches in Maskeliya, Peradeniya, Matale, Talawakale, and Wattagoda. Also includes list of names of registered party members from these areas. 

[Appointment of grama sevakas]

File contains correspondence regarding the appointment of grama sevakas in the traditional Tamil areas in the Trincomalee District. Includes nine letters written by S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, V. Nadarasa, S. A. Coreira, and P. Vinayagamoorthy. Also includes a list of grama sevaka divisions in Trincomalee district.

Principal

The subseries B.1 Principal covers the years 1963 to 1993 and 2004. The Principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough is the chief executive and chief academic officer of the university. The Principal is also a vice-president of the University of Toronto. The materials in this subseries were gathered during the administrations of the following Principals: A.F.W. Plumptre (1965-1972), D.R. Campbell (1972-1975), A.D. Allen (1976), J.E. Foley (1976, 1978-1984), S.J. Colman (1981), G.R. Williams (1984-1989), Paul Thompson (1989-1993), and Kwong-loi Shun (2004-2006). The files mostly comprise professional correspondence and other documents issued directly from the principal.

File contains correspondence regarding People's Bank's credit facilities and new branch openings in the north and east. Includes letters written by V. N. Thambirasa, S. P. Velupillai, S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, and R. Rajaratnam.

File includes legal records and correspondence regarding D. Vengadasalam vs. Ilankai Thozhilalar Kazhakam. Includes letters, case notes, money order acknowledgement notes, completed legal forms, Notice of Hearing, Application to the Labour Tribunal, and transcript of the Tribunal Hearing.

[Muttur Electorate]

File contains records regarding the Muttur Electorate. Includes letters, telegrams, newspaper clippings, and hand drawn maps related to the appointment of Grama Sevaka for the Muttur Tamil area, transfer of a Tamil school Headmaster, change of Tamil railway station name from Thambalagamam to Thambalagamuwa, and the administrative splitting of traditional Tamil villages and the proposed Seruwila and Dehiwatte Village Councils.
