Slides

Images in this series have survived in three different forms, although not all images exist in all forms. These include: 35 mm slides, glass lantern slides and glass plate negatives. They have been arranged by format and within this arrangement have been numbered according to the roll and slide number of the 35mm slides. Some of the original lantern slides had original numbers and these have been added to the description for reference since they give some indication of the original order.

Orchestrations

Subseries consists of parts from dance band orchestrations used by Harry Culley during his time as conductor of the Royal York Orchestra (1929-1930) and as Music Director at the Royal Alexandra Theatre (1948-1955). Many of the parts are annotated for performance, and some files include manuscript parts copied by Harry Culley.

Classical sheet music

Subseries consists of classical sheet music, predominantly performed by Harry and Ida "Claudette" Culley as part of their piano duo, the Black and White Spotters. With the exception of occasional pieces for solo instrument and piano; and published arrangements for two pianos, four hands, the sheet music is mainly for solo piano, with some manuscript second piano parts written out by Harry Culley. The sheet music includes annotations and alterations for performance, and most include precise timings. The Culley's performed regularly on radio shows from the 1930s to 1950s and would have to fill a set amount of time. These timings would have helped them select their repertoire for each show. The subseries also contains some orchestral parts, which were likely used by Harry Culley when he was conductor of the Royal York Orchestra (1929-1930) or Music Director at the Royal Alexandra Theatre (1948-1955). Subseries also includes vocal sheet music used by Ida (Fernley) Culley during her time demonstrating pianos in the warerooms of local piano retailers and manufacturers, and collections of etudes used by Harry Culley for lesson books as a child.

Popular sheet music

Subseries consists of popular sheet music, predominantly performed by Harry and Ida "Claudette" Culley as part of their piano duo, the Black and White Spotters. Second piano parts, which closely follow the solo piano sheet music, were written out by Harry Culley. Individual photographs

Subseries consists of individual photographs from 1900-1960. Photographs depict Kathleen Parlow's life, musical career (including photographs of the Parlow Strong Quartet), and travels to various places including Hawaii and Asia. Also includes photographs of various individuals including but not limited to: Kathleen Parlow; Minnie Parlow; Leopold Auer; Thomas Edison; Arthur Hinton; Harold Bauer; Samuel Gilbert Colt; Willen Willeke; Johan Halvorsen; Henry Scheadieck; Erich Wolff; Ernesto Consolo; Wanda De Stein; Mischa Elman; Marie Hall; Jascha Heifetz.

Choral manuscript music

Subseries consists of blueprint-style manuscripts, manuscripts written in ink or pencil, and copies of blueprint scores. Most of the manuscripts are Leslie Bell's arrangements of popular songs, show tunes, hymns, and other songs, with some original compositions. Information about the original composers, intended ensembles, dates, and where and when the songs were performed is not consistently recorded in the manuscripts' heading. The manuscripts are generally autographed with one of the following: Leslie Bell, Leslie Richard Bell, L.B., or L.R.B. The arrangements are predominantly for the Leslie Bell Singers (originally the Alumnae Singers), formed in 1939.

Henri Nouwen Literary Centre correspondence files

Subseries consists of correspondence files kept by staff at the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre (HNLC) as part of the management of Nouwen’s estate and the business of the HNLC. The files were predominantly created during the four years following Nouwen’s death, prior to the establishment of the Henri Nouwen Literary Trust and the incorporation of the Canadian branch of the Henri Nouwen Society. Due to the overlapping administrative support of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre and the American branch of the Henri Nouwen Society, as well Sue Mosteller’s continued role with various L’Arche communities, records pertaining to the operation of these entities are not uncommon. Often accompanying the correspondence is reference material in the form of agreements, articles, brochures, reports, proposals, newsletters and biographical sketches. Files containing personal correspondence sent to Nouwen and presumably used as reference material by the staff of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre appear throughout the series. In several instances business or personal correspondence that took place after Nouwen’s death between the contact and, most often, Mosteller or Kathy Christie also appear in these files.

Topics in this series include: planning and research regarding the management of Nouwen’s legacy and estate; the mission, goals and incorporation of the Henri Nouwen Society; the relocation and development of the Nouwen Archives; the publication of Nouwen’s unpublished and revised published works; the translation and use of Nouwen’s work and the associated royalties and copyright restrictions; the writing and publication of Nouwen related books by authors including Beth Porter, Michael Ford, Tim Jones, Deidre LaNoue and Michael O’Laughlin; Nouwen focused retreats, workshops, lectures, courses and memorials; the production of Nouwen related audio and visual projects; the design and launch of Nouwen related newsletters and websites; the funding and functions of the Henri Nouwen Stichting; responses to and reviews of Nouwen’s writing; Nouwen’s influence on Hillary Clinton; the operations of the Thomas Merton Center; and Nouwen’s appearance on Hour of Power at the Crystal Cathedral.

Henri Nouwen Literary Centre publisher files

Subseries consists of working files kept by Nouwen at his office at L’Arche Daybreak and added to after his death by staff at the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre (HNLC) as part of the management of his estate. The files consist primarily of correspondence related to Nouwen's published works and prospective projects, as well as publishing contracts, copyright permissions, translations, royalties, reprint rights and endorsements for books written by other authors. Publisher catalogues and newsletters, excerpts of Nouwen’s writing, book sale lists and a small number of personal letters appear throughout. Correspondence between Sue Mosteller and others regarding outstanding projects at the time of Nouwen’s death and newly proposed projects shortly after his death are also included.

Subseries consists of one folio and one collection of broadsides (6 in total) with associated promotional materials, designed, composed, and printed by Someone Editions.

Chapbooks

Subseries consists of 3 chapbooks designed, composed, and printed by Someone Editions. Subseries includes titles from the someone:elements and Little Letterpress series.

Cards and postcards

Subseries consists of a selection of blank, undated greeting cards and postcards designed and printed by Someone.ca. The assortment includes holiday, thank you, birthday, and Valentine's Day cards, in addition to a set of "Bold & Beautiful" cards produced for client Urbanproduct.

Subseries consists of event posters, invitations, announcement notices, business cards, occasion cards, and stationery produced and designed by Dreadnaught Press for a variety of clients.

Broadsides and posters

Subseries consists of 121 broadsides and posters that were designed, hand-set, and hand-printed by Dreadnaught Press. In addition to producing chapbooks (see Subseries 1), the Dreadnaught broadsides were a core part of the Press' publishing focus and demonstrate a range of letterpress techniques. The collective produced these materials for poems, images, ideas, and passages that personally resonated with its members. These prints are distinguished by the notation 'Dreadnaught Broadside', which appears somewhere on the page.

Over 90 different poems, passages, and quotations are featured in the subseries, and the majority of prints are single copies. The subseries also includes the 52 Pickup 76 poetry collection, which brought together 52 poems from 52 emerging poets (see File 1).
