B2000-0028: The records document the Women's Auxiliary of the University Settlement. The Women's Auxiliary was established in 1920, ten years after the creation of the University Settlement. The records in this accession consists of histories of the Women's auxiliary, its constitution, lists of members, correspondence and minutes from their committee meetings. Files also document the University Settlement Board meetings, the Camp Boulderwood initiative, and literature distributed by the University Settlement itself. Also includes a photograph of Marilyn MacDonald, president of the Women's Auxiliary University Settlement accepting the Annual Commnunity Leadership Award on behald of the auxiliary.
B2001-0010: The records document the Women's Auxiliary of the University Settlement. They consist of: copies of its constitutions; reports of officers and committees including President (1939-54), Secretary (1932-1950), Treasurer (1931-1983) House and Buying Committee (1933-1969), Public Relations (1945-74), Tea Conveanor (1963-1986) and Fashion Show (1980-1886); original minute books from 1920-1983; misc. correspondence (1940-1987); membership and supporters lists; one file relating to the writing of the history of the Women's Auxiliary. Also included are University Settlement Board of Directors minutes and reports, 1976-1984 as well as some miscellaneous publications, 1980-1986. Consists of records documenting Blanche van Ginkel's career as a professor of architecture in the Faculty/School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, mainly from 1977 to 1990.

Files created by Mr. Vaughan during his service as Chairman of the Property Committee and later of the Board of Governors documenting his involvement in the university's major physical expansion programme; and photographs showing exterior and interior views of house at Maplehearn (1895-1898).
The Massey Family records consist primarily of official and personal documents created by Vincent Massey. They reflect his distinguished diplomatic career, including his terms as Canadian ambassador to the United States during the 1920s and as High Commissioner to London during the 1930s and 1940s, along with his lengthy affiliation with the Liberal Party of Canada. Also represented are his years as Governor-General of Canada and as the leader of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Sciences and Letters. The moral and financial support given by Vincent and Alice Massey to cultural development in Canada, both individually and through the Massey Foundation, is evident in a wealth of documents relating to the fields of education, music, drama and fine arts (including such institutions and organizations as the National Council of Education, Hart House Quartet, Hart House Theatre, the Dominion Drama Festival, and the National Art Gallery). Their support of the University of Toronto is also well documented. In addition to the records of Vincent Massey, some papers of Alice Massey and correspondence of many members of the Grant, Massey and Parkin families are present.

A1980-0002: Minutes of 24 meetings of the Advisory Committee, chaired by Professor C.C. Gotlieb, held between 23 February 1965 and 25 October 1968.

Records of two generations of the Hastings family, relating primarily to Elgin Rowland and Mary Ferguson Hastings and their son, John Elgin Ferguson Hastings. Included are course notes and laboratory notes, certificates and photographs documenting Elgin Hastings’ years (1908-1913) as a medical student at the University of Toronto, and correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to his wife’s life and activities. Most of the records document the activities of John Hastings as a student, especially the University of Toronto Schools and medicine (1945-1954) at the University of Toronto; his career as a professor of and administrator in public health administration at the University of Toronto (1956-1993), and as a advisor and consultant on community and public health issues from the local to international levels. The correspondence includes many letters from contacts in India and Japan; there are also research materials, manuscripts of articles, books and addresses, conference files; studies, including the Royal Commission on Health Services, the Community Health Centre project, the Sault Ste. Marie study and the Canadian Caribbean Health Initiative; and files on his involvement with Canadian Council of Churches projects and with the United Church of Canada. Included are photographs, an audiotape, two videos, and a number of artifacts.
Hastings (John E. F.) Family
Personal records of the Davidson Black family, covering three generations, with particular reference to Davidson Black, the discoverer of Peking Man. Included are his diaries, extensive family correspondence and a few professional letters; files on his education, his employment, including his service in World War I but especially at Peking Union Medical College, his life in China generally, along with a few on his writings, and some artifacts. There is an extensive and well documented photo collection that helps tie the whole together. There are also a number of films made by Davidson Black between the late 1920s and 1932.

Records of Joan Winearls, map librarian at the University of Toronto, consisting of correspondence, course and lecture notes, addresses, diaries, articles, research files for and drafts of the manuscript of "Mapping Upper Canada, 1780-1867", and photographs. There are also conference files, relating in particular to the Canadian Cartographic Association, the International Cartographic Association, and the Conference on Editorial Problems 1993 conference in Toronto, ‘Editing Early and Historical Atlases’. There are also exhibition files associated with this conference and with ‘Mapping Toronto’s first century’, a 1984 exhibition mounted as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the City of Toronto.
Records in this fonds document several aspects of Professor Warkentin’s career in the Department of English. There is extensive correspondence with colleagues and Canadian writers including James Reaney, Jay MacPherson, David Staines, William Blissett, Margaret Stobie, George Woodcock to list only a few (Series 1 and 6). There are also records relating to her teaching including lectures, course outlines and research files on Canadian authors – see series 4, 6 and 7. Her research interests and editing activities are documented in records found in series 1, 5 and 6 including correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, bibliographies, reviews and grant applications.
Also includes material relating to 1966-67 Survey On Married Women with Children in Graduate Studies and the Canadian Federation of University Women. Includes correspondence, clippings, reports and notes.
This fonds contains records related to the professional activities and personal life of Dr. Ernest Mastromatteo, occupational physician. The bulk of the material in this fonds documents his roles as a medical practitioner, researcher, and occupational health director. The series documenting the activities of the Nickel Producers’ Environmental Research Association, an association Dr. Mastromatteo was heavily involved in during the 1980s, is the largest, with smaller series documenting his career at Inco, his work with the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, and his many projects, case studies, organizations, associations and societies, as well as legal cases he provided testimony in. There is also a relatively large amount of material documenting his research in the form of addresses, and additional material chronicling his time as a student at both the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and the School of Hygiene.
Records include correspondence, notebooks, publications, drafts, prints, reports, meeting minutes and memoranda.
Personal records of University of Toronto Ceremonials Assistant, Kay Takenaka. The records mostly document Ms. Takenaka's being granted the Chancellor's Award, 1985. Records include congratulatory letters and photographs of the awards ceremony. Also included are informal photographs of prominent individuals such as George Ignatieff, John Aird, Ralph Benson, Pauline McGibbon and Prince Phillip.

B2001-0012: Personal records of John H. Sword, university administrator and acting University President 1971-72 documenting events and his activities. Included is one file of miscellaneous correspondence and another of awards and recognitions for Sword . University related files include one on the Library Oral History Project which he administered, one on the tributes to Harold Innis, and others on recognitions for Frances Ireland, F.C. A. Jeanneret and Sidney Hermant. There is also a copy of Sword's paper entitled "Democratization of Universities, 1960-1974: some Commonwealth comparisons" and a copy of a paper given to him "The History of CUSO" [Canadian University Students Overseas]. Also included are photographs documenting Sword at various University events from 1967 to 1978, mainly photographed by Robert Lansdale. Also a photo album on the retirement party for Sarah McCausland.
Sword, John H.
Fonds consists of material documenting the professional and personal life of Prof. Tuppil Venkatacharya. Records cover his collection and research of Sanskrit literature through correspondence, typescripts, annotated texts, translations and transliterations, and recordings of some of his academic presentations. Also included in the material is documentation of the community Sanskrit classes taught by the scholar (Series 10) as well as his and his wife’s, Vijaya Venkatacharya’s, involvement in Toronto’s South Asian community. Fonds also includes family correspondence and some biographical material regarding Venkatacharya’s education and positions held at the University of Toronto and other institutions. Fonds consists of records documenting the professional career of Dr. Barry Sessle. Material covers Dr. Sessle’s extensive research and publishing activity, reflecting the international network of colleagues with whom he works. Material includes correspondence, grant applications, and publication drafts. Records also document his administrative responsibilities at the UofT through multiple committees within the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine, as well as his consultative work outside of the University. Records include minutes, memoranda, reports and correspondence. Finally, Dr. Sessle’s teaching activities are documented through lecture and presentation notes.

B1980-0032: Certificate presented to Arthur D'Orr LePan, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, University of Toronto, at a dinner held in his honour in the Great Hall of Hart House on 2 February 1931, with signatures of the attendees and a copy of the menu, all mounted in a mahogany case. The certificate was designed by J. E. H. Macdonald and measures 53 cm x 35 cm. The dimensions of the case are 70 cm. x 49 cm.

Fonds consists of the professional and personal records of Prof. A.P. Thornton, historian and former Chair of the UofT’s Department of History. Records document some of his publishing activity, academic work presenting and teaching, as well as aspects of his personal life including creative writing and family history. While Prof. Thornton’s administrative role at the University is not significantly reflected in the records, the material contains documentation of the professor’s work with the Presidential Advisory Board in the mid-1980’s related to divestment in South Africa. Other records include family photographs, correspondence, and genealogical research.

Fonds consists of records documenting Professor L. Terrell Gardner’s work related to peace and disarmament. Material especially reflects his involvement with the United Campuses to Prevent Nuclear War (UCAM), but also his involvement with Science for Peace and in the establishment of a program in Peace Studies at University College, University of Toronto. Records include correspondence, minutes, memoranda, notes, flyers, newsletters and reports.
Gardner, L. Terrell
Fonds consists of material documenting the careers of both Prof. Frederick Winter and Joan Winter, particularly related to their archaeological research. Material in the fonds represents both of their individual work and education, as well as research conducted and presentations given together. The records of Prof. Frederick Winter’s cover his publishing activity, research across Europe, particularly within Greece, teaching, and some aspects of his doctoral work.
Joan Winter’s records make up a larger portion of the fonds’ material with considerable documentation of her undergraduate education at the University of Alberta as well as her time at the University of Toronto. Records also include Joan Winter’s teaching material as well as the tutorials she led for some of Prof. Winter’s courses.
The Winters’ joint research is documented through travel diaries, articles, research, and presentation notes. Some of the presentations are accompanied by photographs and the fonds includes additional graphic material related to their research.

Records in these eight accessions document mainly Ham’s work as a student, a teacher and his professional activities as an engineer. There is also correspondence and memorabilia that document his personal relationships with family members. Although some series do touch upon his administrative posts at the University of Toronto and his advisory roles on government bodies, most of Ham’s activities in this regard can be found in the official archives of that body or office.

This fonds is a very complete documentation of all aspects of Prof. Stoicheff career. His relationship with colleagues at the University, nationally and internationally is evident throughout but especially in the Series 1 Correspondence, Series 8 Professional Association and Activities, and Series 9 University of Toronto. Series 1 Correspondence also documents his mentoring role and his role as a referee and evaluator of peer and student work. This is also documented in Series 11 Teaching, Series 12 Correspondence with Students and Series 8 Professional Associations and Activities. His research activities are extensively documented not only in Series 6 Research but in Series 10 Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Centre and in Series 3 Publications. Stoicheff, Boris Peter
Personal records of Mary Mamie O'Brien (1926-1998), philosopher and feminist scholar, Professor Emerita in the Department of Sociology in Education at OISE. Includes files on: her education; professional correspondence; extensive drafts and manuscripts of her research, writings, and addresses; artistic works (poetry, short stories and a play); and photographs of Mary O'Brien with colleagues and friends.
Records in this fonds document most aspects of Prof. Rayside’s career as an administrator, activist and academic. Series 1 (Biographical) and 2 (Correspondence) give a good overview of his career and the professional correspondence in Series 2 relate to or complete most other series in the fonds. Correspondence can also be found in all other series.
His role as an adept administrator is documented not only in Series 3 (University of Toronto Administration) but also in the records found in Series 4 (Advocacy) and Series 5 (Professional Associations) where his leadership and involvement on committees is evident. Prof. Rayside’s academic interests coincided with his political activism and this is well documented in Series 4 (Advocacy) seen in reference to records in Series 7 (Books) and Series 8 (Articles, Papers and Talks) that extensively document his research and writing. Finally his roles as a teacher and mentor are well documented in Series 6 (Letters of Recommendations and Evaluations) and in Series 9 (Teaching).
Four digital files of typed extracts from the personal diary Professor Latta began keeping in Dec. 1965, relating to the Department of German at Trinity College, the Combined Departments of German, and, as of July 1, 1975, the university German Department. No. 1 contains entries dating from November 1966 to December 1988; No. 2 runs from January 1989 to December 1995; No. 3 covers from January 1996 through December 1998; and No. 4 is January 1999 to December 2005.

Cartwright, Berdee Elizabeth
These personal records consist mainly of records documenting Clara Benson’s non-professional activities such as work with the Women’s Athletic Association of the University of Toronto, the YWCA and her relationship with family members and friends. The personal correspondence in Series 2 provides the most detailed information about her relationship with family, friends and activities. Letters from her parents and siblings provide an insight into her activities and progress at the University of Toronto during her undergraduate years. A few letters, however, will be found from colleagues at the university such as Prof. A.B. Macallum, Prof. Annie Laird and others.
Unfortunately documentation relating to her academic activities is limited to some correspondence and notes found in Series 5 relating to her efforts from 1920s onwards to have the Women’s Athletic Building built. Her early education in Port Hope is documented in the school books, essays and other records in Series 4. Series 4 also contains her framed diplomas for B.A. and Ph.D. No manuscripts of her publications, including her Ph D. thesis appear to have survived. The lecture notes in Series 7 do provide some indication of the content of her courses in food chemistry, and were probably used repeatedly, year after year.
Dr. Benson also recorded her travel and sightseeing activities both abroad and in Canada on film. Series 10 contains 50 rolls of 16mm film documenting her trips to Egypt (1926), England (1937 and late 1940’s and early 1950’s), South America (1939) and the United States (1939, 1948). Some of her leisure time, both while at the University of Toronto and after her retirement, was spent filming events and scenery in Toronto in general, and the University in particular, as well as her family at home in Port Hope.

This fonds consists two accessions of personal records of Prof. Scott M. Eddie, Department of Economics in the University of Toronto and University of Toronto at Mississauga. The records document his academic achievements predominantly during his more than 30 years with the University of Toronto specializing in European economic history. It includes professional correspondence with colleagues and personal records relating to his employment arrangements with the University of Toronto, manuscripts of published and unpublished scholarly works in English, Hungarian and German, teaching and research materials mainly in the form of grant applications. There are also records relating to his undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota and graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This includes files relating to his PhD thesis (including a copy of the thesis) as well as class notes. In addition there are teaching files created during academic appointments to several American educational institutions such as Williams College and the University of Wisconsin in the mid-1960s and as visiting professor at Cambridge in England and other European institutions.

Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, lecture notes, drafts of articles and addresses, documenting the career of John Sawyer at Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, and the University of Toronto, at the last especially as chair of the Commerce Programmes, with the Faculty of Management Studies, and as Director of the Institute of Policy Analysis. Also includes a revised (2012) copy of Professor Sawyer's memoirs.
