Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #1: Theme today is Come Away and Rest. What does being on retreat mean? It means to step back and resting. Jesus invites us all to enter into this time of retreat, to come aside and rest, to waste time today with no work or decisions. Conf #2: We want to continue the theme of this morning of coming away to rest and to meet Jesus. We want to focus on how do I respond to that invitation.

Part 1 - Robert Larouche

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Joe Egan and Robert Larouche at the annual weekend for l'Arche Daybreak assistants in September 1985.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: This is a time together to deepen what we are called to live as L'Arche. The text for today from St. Paul says "we urge to make more progress in the life you are meant to live." We are entering anew year now. We want to make progress ourselves at Daybreak in may domains which you have identified as priorities through prayer.

Jean Vanier, Conference #12

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share with you about another meeting with Jesus, which tells us much about him. It's the meeting of those two disciples walking to Emmaus after the resurrection. Maybe when we arrived at this retreat we had in our hearts the sentiments which must have been in the hearts of these two disciples. They had put so much hope in Jesus, that he would liberate Israel. Many people in our world are disillusioned. Their expectations have collapsed. We too can feel cheated by community because it wasn't what we expected.

Jean Vanier, Conference #11

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: One of the sufferings of our communities is littleness. When we welcome people with all their fragility and wounds, there are no miracle cures. Our life is made up of very little things. Jean goes on to share about L'Arche in India.

Jean Vanier, Conference #9

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The only thing that is important is that we meet Jesus and that we live the experience of covenant with him, which liberates, confirms us and helps us to understand the extraordinary tenderness of our God. During a retreat it's important to waste time with Jesus so that he can reveal himself to us in the silence. This afternoon I want to talk about another encounter in the gospel of John between Jesus and another woman, the one accused of adultery.

Jean Vanier, Conference #8

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The specific gift of Jesus to humanity is forgiveness. Forgiveness is essentially returning to the covenant, a recognition that we are made one for the other and called to give life to one another, that we belong to each other. We are there for Jesus and he is there for us. "Whatever you ask for in my name, the Father will give you". What do you ask? What is your yearning and what is your thirst? Is your asking coming from the depths of your being?

1A - Tuesday night, Jean Vanier

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier and Mario Galeazzi at an Assistants' Retreat in Toronto, ON, in August 1982.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

We can always say that the fault is over there because there is no one comforting me. We have to discover how we comfort ourselves or how do we let the spirit of God comfort us. You have experiences of this when you had to call on your own resources. The answer somewhere is about prayer. Prayer is learning to comfort and shepherd ourselves or be shepherded by Jesus.

John Kavanaugh, "Flight from Person"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Talk One: What I am reflecting on is basically a flight from personhood, the fear of personhood. It's a fear of our humanity and a fear of God. We run away from what it means to be a person, capable of self-gift. It takes many different forms. One is a loss of interiority and the fragmentation of self. Talk Two: We have a lot of excuses for not responding to our world. It's all of us. We know it but ignore it. We won't acknowledge our need to change.

It is usually simple and gentle, but it can cause fear in us. What is the cost being asked of me? Conf #7: The theme is sin, brokenness and reconciliation. When I thin of my sinfulness, the first feeling that comes to me is fear. Yet Jesus often says "Don't be afraid." But we often flee from any pain.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: When we feel hopeless we often conceal it in different ways. We have to hide the fact that we are helpless. Also, when we receive aggression, that is a difficult thing. There again we often flee or get angry. Basically we can just hide in the office and become non available. Another reality is loneliness, which leads to the need to seek approval

Side 1: Jo Lenon, “What does accompaniment require of me? (cont’d).” Side 2: Jo Lenon, “Trust and Choices.”

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #3: is a continuation of #2. Conf #4: I am going to talk about trust and choices, but not together. Trust has been critical in my own journey. When I was 17 I had an experience with my mother where our relationship broke which had to do with trust. It impacted our relationship from then on. The residue left in me was "could I trust myself? and "could I trust God?" I had to work with this a lot with help. The experience has taught me a lot about acceptance and forgiveness. Trust is essential for our community living and our personal growth. Trust takes time and is built in relationships.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a retreat for Assistants from March 13-18, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: To rest on a retreat means to be disciplined. To be silent, eat slowly, to walk, to pray--that's what it means to rest. When Jesus says rest, He is inviting us to rest here, Something happens to us when we are in love. We become peaceful. Who can understand love? The text is the prologue from St. John's gospel. The light which shines in the darkness allows us to see. Who are we as L'Arche as part of a larger reality which is the church?

Our "monitoring" self is always there on our shoulder watching us and asking "what's in this for me?" So don't be surprised if your ego tries to hook you and bring you back to sanity. Our call is to go deeper into the silence.
