Pimlott 1978 accession

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, field notes, publications, brochures, maps and films relating to Douglas Pimlott's career as zoologist and professor at the University of Toronto. The records relate to provincial commissions and committees (Newfoundland and Ontario) of which he was a member, and includes files on areas of his major research interest: the environment (oil, pollution, Alaska pipeline, pesticides), water policy, provincial resources, and northern development. The field notes are from his study of the moose population in Newfoundland.

Pimlott 1995 accession

This accession documents primarily the research and writing activities of Prof. Pimlott during his academic career as a student, environmentalist and teacher of zoology and forestry at the University of Toronto. Documentation of his participation in various national and inter-national organizations is found among professional correspondence (Series I) and subject files (Series IV). Drafts and offprints of his writings as a student (including his doctoral thesis), government employee, and professor of zoology at the University of Toronto are contained in Series VI and VII. Much of the early data he collected on moose for both his theses and government reports and later, on wolves are to be found in the research materials and field notebooks in Series VIII and Series IX. Additional correspondence following his death on July 31, 1978 has been preserved in Series III and contains tributes, and summaries of his contributions and accomplishments to wildlife management and the environment.

Canadian General Hospital No. 4 (University of Toronto)

This accession contains a selection of x-rays done on soldiers at the Canadian General Hospital No. 4 during, and shortly after the First World War. The x-rays are mounted in an album, which patient names and wound descriptions listed on the back of each image. The accession also contains 4 detailed autopsy record books. The autopsies appear to have been completed at Basingstoke, England, where Hospital No. 4 was relocated from its original station in Salonika, Poland. Neither the x-rays or the autopsy reports appear to be complete.

Contains general administrative files of the department of Surgery including general correspondence, correspondence with the various teaching hospitals and non-teaching hospitals, committee files such as personnel and promotions committee (1971-1972), professorial committee (1958-1965), and records of the the Surgical Research Committee (1971-1972). Also Business Officer files which include mainly budgets (1965-1979).

Contains files of the Department Chair, (ca. 1920-1973)(incomplete); records of the Kergin Surgical Society, 1966-1974; records of the Gallie Club, 1953-1978; photographic portraits of individuals who taught in the department, and a composite of the Toronto School of Medicine third year class, 1884-1885.

University of Toronto. Art Service (Faculty of Medicine)

Contains eight drawings mounted on a board illustrating a lobectomy. Based on information on the back of the illustrations, they were prepared by Faculty of Medicine Art Service for the Department of Surgery. They were used first by Dr. Norman Shenstone of the Department of Surgery and the Toronto General Hospital and possibly later by Robert M. Janes, head of the Department of Surgery.

Contains original drawings done by members of the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine including M.T. Wishart, long time director of the Department and her assistant E. Hopper. They were done for two publications: "Surgery of the Hand" by Dr. John H. Cowen, University of Toronto Press 1939 (box/001); "The Essentials of Obstetrics and Gynaecology "by Dr. A.W. Scott and Dr. H.B. VanWyck, Philadelphia, Lea and Fabiger, 1946 (boxes /002-/006).

This accession contains PhD student files. Each file consists of admission, registration, and confirmation forms, correspondence between department administration and the student, PhD proposals, student transcripts, and exam results. While the files contain items ranging from 1988-2007, the degree conferred dates of the students range from 1999-2007.

Contains introductory remarks to Dr. James Bovell's first lecture in Pathology at King's College, 1849.
Photographs include staff composites, ca. 1928-1936; portraits of William Brebner, William Hendry and Ronald Saddington who were University of Toronto graduates who died of a virus contracted while conducting research; the gathering of the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists at the Royal York, 1934; portraits of staff members including William Lipsett Robinson and William Lindlow Holman.

Five volumes of typescripts (carbon) of field notes of Professor A.P. Coleman, compiled by the Royal Canadian Institute. These notes are on the drift deposits of Ontario and Canada as they relate to the glacial geology of the regions visited by Dr. Coleman. Records of the Department of Engineering Drawing, consisting of instructions and problems sets for 1st to 4th year courses in engineering problems and drawing (1936-1965); problems in mathematics for 1st and 2nd year students (1944-1963); course notes in mathematics taken by Professor William James Turnbull Wright from Professor Samuel Beatty during the summer of 1933 and the academic years 1934-1936; lantern slides, most of which belonged to Professors Roy Cockburn and C. H. C. Wright (1912-1946). Also included are records of the Department of Civil Engineering, consisting of a report on hydro-electric power on the Bow River by John Bow Challis (191-) and undergraduate project reports (1970) on the problems of parking on the University of Toronto campus.
