The Carl Schaefer Collection of Thoreau MacDonald Material

The collection consists of letters from Thoreau MacDonald to Schaefer, as well as a large collection of Christmas and occassional cards, several of which are originals, original lino-cuts, printer's proofs of lino-cuts and pen drawings, and other printed material and clippings. The letters describe their work and contain running commentary on the art scene of the period.

The Atkins Family Papers

A collection of papers pertaining to the Tinkler, Barnard, and Atkins families of England. The exact relationship between the Tinkler family and the Barnard/Atkins family remains unknown, although the papers related to Tinklers have been preserved together with those of the other families for several generations. The first box includes the military correspondence of Robert Barnard (d. 1854) from Ireland during the great famine year of 1847 as well as his letters from the Crimean War. The second box includes the military correspondence of Sir John Atkins, KCMG, KCVO, FRCS (1875-1963) from his year of service in the Boer War, as well as materials related to his career as a medical officer in the First World War. Boxes 3-5 reflect the life and career of Sir Hedley John Barnard Atkins, KStJ, KBE (1904-1983), first professor of surgery at Guy’s Hospital, London and President of the Royal College of Surgeons. He specialised in the scientific treatment of breast cancer and the Hedley Atkins Breast Unit at New Cross Hospital acknowledges his contribution in the field. From 1971 to 1973 he was President of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Contains anatomical drawings and illustrations from Stephen Gilbert’s publications and professional life as an anatomical illustrator. Collection notably includes anatomical drawings of the adult human, adult embryo, cat, fetal pig, dogfish, necturus, frog and other assorted zoology. Includes accessions from 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2015. Accessions from the gifts of 2001 and 2003 were catalogued separately. For additional drawings and illustrations from Outline of Cat Anatomy with Reference to the Human (University of Toronto Press, 2000) and Atlas of General Zoology (Burgess Publishing Co., 1991), Anatomy of the Fetal Pig (University of Washington Press, 1963). These accessions were amalgamated into finding aid in 2018 and the entire collection was given the number of MS Coll. 413. The collection previously had the number of MS Coll. 289.

Includes personal and professional correspondence; personal photographs; official documents; receipts and invoices; typescript drafts of books; newspaper articles, passports, cultural and political pursuits. Various highlighted items in his collection include many interesting photographs documenting the May Day Rallies of 1933-4 in Hamilton, Ontario-suggesting that he had an active role in organizing these demonstrations. There are also a number of newspaper clippings (primarily from The Daily Colonist (Victoria, B.C.), documenting such issues as communism, the war in Vietnam, Cyprus, various actions taken by the Canadian Government, and celebrities such as Marilyn Munroe and Princess Diana. A series of postcards document a trip taken by Sam Lawrence across Europe in 1936. Also featured is a collection of photographs of Lenin from 1897-1917 from a book of photographs entitled “Lenin” edited by Vladimir Il’ich and a collection of postcards documenting the Third Congress of Komintern in Russia, 1919. Lastly, there are two typescript books dedicated to Morisse and written by Georgoula Beikos entitled “The Greece That Fights: A Collection of Articles in Russian”, and a book of poems written by political prisoners on the Cypriot island of Gioura after the Greek civil war from 1945-1949.

The collection consists of a disassembled scrapbook of insurance underwriters' reports and records, fire reports, original news clippings and photographs, and other miscellaneous material on various North American conflagrations between 1904 and 1918. Of particular local interest are the pages (five in total) devoted to the Toronto fire of 1904. Among the other major North American fires represented in the scrapbook include those in the cities of Baltimore, Rochester, Halifax, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Three Rivers (Que.), Salem (Mass.), Campbelltown (NB), Houston and Atlanta, among others. The scrapbook appears to have been assembled by an underwriter from the firm of Royal Insurance Company of Liverpool.

During the late 19th and early 20 centuries, the area was largely inhabited by those who worked in the lumber industry. With the arrival of summer cottagers at the beginning of the 20th century, the economy improved. The Martin papers describe this period.

A collection of Russell Brown's literary papers, and his editorial and correspondence files from his tenure as editor at 'Lakehead University Review' (1972-1975), 'Descant' (1979-1983), as joint editor of 'An Anthology of Canadian Literature in English' (1982-1983), and poetry editor at McClelland and Stewart (1983-1988). Brown edited about thirty books of poetry, including works by Roo Borson, Lorna Crozier, Mary di Michele, Ralph Gustafson, Irving Layton, Douglas LePan, Susan Musgrave and Al Purdy. Some manuscripts are included with the correspondence. Manuscripts for which the authors sought Brown's editorial and critical suggestions may contain lengthy comments which, in many cases, resulted in the works being revised and later published.

The Kaliuzhnyi Papers focus on the life and activities of participants of one of the Ukrainian nationalist movements, the United Hetman Organization [Soiuz hetmantsiv derzhavnykiv], during the 1940s to 1950s. During this period the hetmanite movement was under the leadership of Danylo Skoropadskyi, who assumed the role in 1948 and served until his death in 1957. Rodion Kaliuzhnyi served as his secretary and after Skoropadskyi's death continued to be active in the movement. The collection also includes material on the activites of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain, as well as other Ukrainian emigre organizations such as the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, the Ukrainian Catholic Women's Organization in Germany, and several publishing houses. Other aspects of Ukrainian emigre life are documented by photographs of the Ukrainian community in the displaced persons camps in Mittenwald and Aschaffenburg, Germany from 1946 to 1949.

Scope and content:
This collection contains drafts and proofs for a number of Sarah’s published monographs, including Little Eurekas (Biblioasis, 2007), A Day’s Grace (The Porcupine’s Quill, 2003), and The Touchstone: Poems New and Selected (Anansi, 1992), along with correspondence and drafts of Sarah’s contributions to the Porcupine’s Quill Essential Poets series, on Margaret Avison, Don Coles, and George Johnston. Also included are over sixty published examples of Sarah’s poetry, essays, interviews, and fiction, in Canadian and American periodicals such as The Malahat Review, ARC, The Threepenny Review, The Walrus, and The New Quarterly.
In addition, this collection includes correspondence, drafts and published versions of Sarah’s journalistic work, which has appeared in Canadian newspapers such as The Globe and Mail, The Montreal Gazette, and The Ottawa Citizen. Collection contains personal and professional papers pertaining to Robertson Davies. This includes material relating to Davies’ early life, including writing and acting as a student at Upper Canada College (1929-1932), his studies at Baillol College at Oxford (1935-1938), and participation in theatrical performances in Kingston, Oxford, the Old Vic Theatre, Peterborough and the Stratford Festival (1934-1960). The papers contain a small amount of material related to Davies’ career as a journalist at Saturday Night magazine and the Peterborough Examiner. These papers contain extensive material on the novels, books and writing of Davies. This includes drafts, proofs, correspondence, reviews, clippings and any stage adaptations of his novels from The Salterton Trilogy (Tempest-Tost, Leaven of Malice and A Mixture of Frailties), The Deptford Trilogy (Fifth Business, The Manticore and World of Wonders), The Cornish Trilogy (The Rebel Angels, What’s Bred in the Bone and The Lyre of Orpheus) and the incomplete Toronto Trilogy (Murther and Walking Spirits and The Cunning Man). Also included are a complete set of original drafts and woodcuts for the Penguin edition covers of Davies’ novels, which were designed by the American printmaker Bascove. Limited material related to his essays, short stories and non-fiction publications, notably including Shakespeare’s Boy Actors, A Voice from the Attic, High Spirits and his books of fictional essays by Samuel Marchbanks are a part of the papers. Additionally, the collection includes considerable records relating to Davies’ contributions to anthologies as well as professional writing in academic journals, newspapers and magazines. These papers encompass Davies’ career as a playwright, including material related to twenty-two original works including drafts, scripts, photographs, posters, playbills and clippings, as well as the complete papers relating to the production of The Golden Ass which was staged after Davies’ death. The collection contains a large sampling of correspondence of both a professional and personal nature spanning from 1934 to his death in 1995. Also included in the collection is material related to the professional career of Davies’ as a well-known Canadian writer, this includes photographs and press clippings as well as speeches and commentaries made by Davies and his awards. Records also pertain to academic and trade writing on Davies and his work, most notably a complete set of interviews conducted with family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances by Val Ross during the course of her writing Robertson Davies: A Portrait in Mosaic (2009). Papers also relate to the eighteen years Davies spent as the Master of Massey College beginning in 1963. Including articles on the founding of Massey College, the death of Vincent Massey, newsletters, teaching material and invitations and programmes for the annual Christmas Gaudy, printed on the Massey College Press. Also included is a small amount of personal records including travel records, calendars, real estate and list of personal effects. Finally, the collection contains a series dedicated to the collecting practices of Dr. Rick Davis, who collected and assembled these papers. This includes Davis’ invoices and notes for his Davies material, as well as correspondence including exchanges with Robertson Davies, Moira Whalon, Brenda Davies and Jennifer Surridge.
