Jean Wilson sous-fonds

This box of textual material and photographs was initially donated by Diana Mansell, a close friend of Ms. Wilson’s during the latter part of her life, to the Allemang Centre. They were acquired following Ms. Wilson’s death in December 2000. The files were created and collected by Ms. Wilson while she was a professor at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto (1937-1972). Consists of files about her nursing education and career, as well as photographs of Faculty of Nursing staff and alumni.

Teresa V. O'Neill sous-fonds

Sous-fonds consists of records related to O'Neill's role as literary executrix of her father's estate. Sous-fonds includes a draft of her thesis, correspondence regarding the thesis, correspondence with researchers regarding her father's political papers, and newspaper articles and genealogical information related to the O'Neill family, as well as university diplomas.

Martin L. Friedland personal records

Records documenting the life of Martin L. Friedland, as a student, professor of law and administrator at the University of Toronto; as an expert on legal matters and a contributor to the formation of public policy at the provincial and federal levels; and as an author of sixteen books and numerous articles.

Included in this accession is correspondence, certificates and diplomas, diaries, course and lecture notes, memoranda, minutes of meetings, notes, research material, manuscripts, transcripts of oral history interviews, audiotapes, radio scripts, book reviews, books, pamphlets, reports, press clippings, photographs and maps.

Harold Gordon Skilling sous-fonds

This sous-fonds documents the life and career of Gordon Skilling, especially his family, his formative years as a student, and his later years as an internationally recognized expert on Russia, Eastern Europe and, especially, Czechoslovakia. Researchers seeking to fill the obvious gaps in this accession should refer to the earlier accessions in the Skilling fonds in the University Archives that were donated by Professor Skilling over a period of almost two decades, beginning in 1983.

Christine Bissell sous-fonds

This sous-fonds consists of three Series:

  • Personal Correspondence: includes hundreds of letters sent to Christine from her mother between 1946 to 1958. Originally from Scotland, Christine Gray married Claude Bissell in September of 1945 and immigrated to Canada soon afterward. These letters, although one sided, will give good insight into this experience and the continued relationship to family in Scotland.

  • Correspondence and Memorabilia: received after Claude Bissell’s death in June 2000 which includes letters of condolence, letters and notes written by Christine in response. This series also contains information on memorials for Claude Bissell.

  • Photographs – includes several formal portraits of Christine Bissell including two done by photographer Josef Karsh as well as a snapshot of Christine with family members.

Margaret Allemang sous-fonds

Personal records of Margaret Allemang, documenting her career as a researcher, historian and professor of nursing history at the University of Toronto, and as a promoter and preserver of nursing history, primarily through her oral histories with nursing sisters from World Wars I and II, the Margaret Allemang Centre for the History of Nursing, and the Canadian Association for the History of Nursing/Association Canadienne pour l'Histoire du Nursing (CAHN/ACHN), the latter two of which she was a co-founder. There are also files on other professional organizations, including the Canadian Nurses Association, Elderhostel, and the Conference on Nursing History and other nursing conferences. Included are correspondence, appointment books, minutes, administrative and teaching files, oral history interviews, research notes, manuscripts, reports, newsletters, addresses and audiotapes.

Davidson Black III and Nevitt Black sous-fonds

While this sous-fonds contains a copy of G. Elliot Smith’s memorial to Davidson Black that he sent to Davy and a single file of letters from Adena to Davy, along with some photographs, most of it relates to work done Davy in relation to interest by individuals and the media in his father and in the search for the lost fossils of Peking Man, and the efforts by Davy and Nevitt to ensure that their father’s work continued to be recognized. Also present are five diplomas and certificates relating to Davy’s medical education.

Ezra Schabas personal records

Contains personal and professional correspondence, records of professional associations and consultative work, as well as teaching materials and lectures. His particular expertise in musical education and in particular, orchestras, resulted in him being commissioned by both private and public sector bodies to undertake studies and prepare reports. Many of these were published and led to developments in both these areas. Also included in this accession are manuscripts of addresses, articles and one book entitled Theodore Thomas: America's conductor and builder of orchestras 1835-1905, (University of Illinois Press, 1989).

John Stratton personal papers

Sous-fonds consists of the personal papers of John Stratton, including his correspondence with record labels, other record collectors, musicians; his personal diaries; and photographs of himself, his family and friends, colleagues, and autographed photographs of various singers.

Bob Kerr sous-fonds

After the death of James Dauphinee, Bob Kerr picked up his work requesting letters and gathering information for a biography. This material includes his research notes and the manuscript copies of the first three chapters of an uncompleted biography.

Stratton-Clarke 78 rpm collection

Sous-fonds consists of the 78 rpm recordings from the Stratton-Clarke collection. The collection spans the entire history of 78 record production, including acoustic and electronic recordings, ranging from 7 to 14 inches in diameter. It consists predominantly of vocal recordings, representing the work of more than 1,000 different performers. Stratton and Clarke's collecting mandate focused on the Golden age of singing (pre-World War One), releases of the Mapleson cylinder recordings, Canadian performers, and early Russian recordings (pre-Revolution). Stratton also collected recordings by performers that he knew personally. The collection also contains miscellaneous memorabilia and ephemera related to the 78 rpm collection.
