Toccata / Paradisi : arranged for string orchestra by Robert Manson

File consists of autograph manuscript scores and parts for Manson's arrangement for string orchestra of the second movement of Pietro Domenico Paradies' (1707-1791) Harpsichord Sonata in A major, P. 893.06. One of the manuscript scores includes an unidentified arrangement or composition for choir (SATB) in Robert Manson's hand.

Quartet in D major : [for string quartet]

File consists of autograph manuscript parts and score for Manson's string quartet in D major. The file includes multiple copies of each part, all in Manson's hand, including a separate set of parts of the fourth movement only.

Symphony no. 1 in G minor : [arranged for two pianos, four hands]

File consists of the autograph manuscript parts for Manson's arrangement of his first symphony for two pianos, four hands. This arrangement was privately performed by Evlyn Howard-Jones and Healey Willan, according to an article in The Globe and Mail (October 16, 1937). File includes two manuscript versions of each part.

Symphony no. 1 in G minor

File consists of the autograph manuscript parts for Manson's first symphony, including multiple manuscript copies for some instruments (e.g., violin, viola, violoncello, bass, oboe, clarinet). Manson composed his "magnum opus" in 1936 and it was premiered privately in April 1937 by members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Donald Heins.

Canadian fantasy : for 25-piece orchestra

File consists of two autograph manuscript scores for Manson's Canadian Fantasy (initially titled Rhapsody Canadienne) for 25-piece orchestra. One version is heavily annotated. The piece was originally written for a contest in connection with the Canadian Folksong Festival in Quebec (1928) named for President E.W. Beatty of the Canadian Pacific Railway and later re-arranged for a larger orchestra [1929]. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Luigi von Kunits, premiered the work in a concert at Massey Hall (February 12, 1929). At the time, Robert Manson was the leader of the orchestra's second violins.

Collection consists of records from early conventions of the Ontario Music Teachers' Association (OMTA), primarily from the first convention, held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto (October 6-8, 1936). Papers include programs (1936-1944); correspondence; meeting minutes; lists of registrants; scripts for speeches, including an address by Sir Ernest MacMillan at the first convention; drafts of the OMTA constitution; and proceedings (1936, 1937).

Series consists of materials from the first three seminars hosted by the John Adaskin Project: Seminar for Graded Educational Music (Toronto, November 11-16, 1963), which included 15 Canadian composers working with students at schools in the Toronto area; Seminar II (Toronto, March 1965), which was held in Adaskin's memory and which featured concert demonstrations of school music by Canadian composers and planning meetings for the continuation of the project; and a third seminar, or policy conference (Toronto, November 23-25, 1967). Documents from each seminar include reports, summaries of discussions, photographs, and promotional and press material.

John Adaskin Project under development by the Canadian Music Centre : Toward new music in education : [report by Keith MacMillan]

File consists of a report on the John Adaskin Project by Keith MacMillan, executive secretary of the Canadian Music Centre, including a brief catalogue of "Canadian instrumental works suitable for school use." The catalogue includes the composer, title, instrumentation, duration, and availability (manuscript or publisher) for each piece. The report also includes a bibliography of reference sources on the John Adaskin Project and other aspects of new Canadian music in education.

Graded elementary music plan

File consists of proposals, policies, forms, form letters to composers, correspondence, press releases, copies of newspaper articles, reports, and other records pertaining to the initial years of the John Adaskin Project. The project, under the leadership of John Adaskin, was initially named the "Canadian Contemporary Graded Educational Music Project" and received funding from the Canada Council in 1961. The file includes a copy of Adaskin's initial suggested plan for the project (submitted July 25, 1961); notes on Seminar I, held November 1963, with 15 Canadian composers in attendance (Murray Adaskin, Louis Applebaum, Samuel Dolin, Anne Eggleston, Robert Fleming, Harry Freedman, Talivaldis Kenins, Alfred Kunz, William McCauley, Francois Morel, Clermont Pepin, Murray Schafer, Harry Somers, Norman Symonds, and John Weinzweig) as the first commissioning composers of the project; and materials from Sminar II, held March 1965, with the following Canadian composers: Murray Adaskin, Anne Eggleston, Robert Fleming, Harry Freedman, Talivaldis Kenins, Alfred Kunz, Murray Schafer, Harry Somers, and John Weinzweig.

Reports

Series consists of reports and related materials on the John Adaskin Project, prepared for the Canadian Music Centre and for the Canadian Music Educators' Association, who joined as a partner on the project in 1973. Reports were prepared by the project directors: John Adaskin, Keith MacMillan, and Patricia Shand.

Publications

Series consists of drafts and sales records for publications by the John Adaskin Project. Publications, issued by the Canadian Music Centre, were part of Phases 1 and 2 of the project (see information sheets in series B) and consists of one-page evaluations of each selected piece (published and unpublished). The evaluations provide guidance to teachers regarding musical elements (style, mood, form, compositional techniques), degree of difficulty, technical challenges, and other useful pedagogical aspects of the selected compositions.

John Adaskin Project : information sheets

File consists of information sheets in French and English for the John Adaskin Project, including the 1979 version, written by Colleen Orr, co-ordinator of the John Adaskin Project, for the Ontario Music Educators' Association (OMEA), and the 1975 version, written by Patricia Shand for the Meeting of Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA) Special Representatives (June 25, 1975).

Guides, forms, promotional material, and information overviews

Series consists of sample forms, information sheets, brochures, and advertisements used and generated by the John Adaskin Project to evaluate music for educational use. Most of the material in this series pertains to Phase 1 of the project (as defined in the information sheets), which was the "preparation of a selective Guidelist of recommended published Canadian music suitable for performance by student bands, choirs, orchestras, string orchestras, and chamber ensembles."
