The Nick Thierry fonds consists of 320 issues of Swim News (formerly Swim Canada) and research for articles contained within the magazine, various correspondence with people involved and interested in competitive swimming, a large amount of handwritten and typed results from numerous swim meets and events, and a series of letters collected from Thierry’s correspondence with Howard Firby, who served as the head coach of Canada’s swim teams during the 1964 Olympic Games and the 1966 Commonwealth Games. The fonds also contains bulletins published by the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association (CSCA), a number of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings from swimming events, Thierry’s collection of postcards and media passes to major swim meets, and the official binders issued to media members for the XI Commonwealth Games in Edmonton and XXI Olympics in Montreal. The material in the Thierry fonds has been divided into the following 7 series entitled; Swim News, Correspondence, Swim Meets: Results, Rankings and Guides, CSCA Bulletins, Swimming History Texts and Scrapbooks, Collected Memorabilia and Artifacts, and Photographs.

Fonds consists of the professional and personal records of composer Michael Colgrass. The collection includes manuscripts of his compositions; administrative and financial documents relating to commissions with orchestras, performers, and publishers; and materials generated from the performance of these compositions (including recordings, programs, reviews, and program notes). Other records relate to workshops that Colgrass led, particularly his Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) workshops and Colgrass' writings, including poetry, articles, manuscripts and notes for his books, and correspondence with friends and colleagues.

B1979-0051: Records documenting Dr. Siminovitch's career in the Faculty of Medicine and the broader field of genetics and public health. Included are records of the Department of Medical Genetics, the Sub-Committee on Science Policy of the Long Range Planning Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, and provincial bodies such as the Ontario Council of Health, Task Force on Genetics, the Ontario Cancer Institute, the Ontario Task Force on Health Research Requirements, the Mount Sinai Institute and many more. There are also 7 boxes of editorial case files for the journal Virology, edited by Siminovitch from 1974-1976. [17 boxes, 1968-1979, no finding aid]

B2019-0010: Personal records of Dr. Louis (Lou) Siminovitch documenting the latter part of his career as a molecular biologist and Head of the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital. Includes extensive correspondence subject files with colleagues, family, and friends, along with files related to his numerous speaking engagements. [30 boxes, 1963-2017]

This accession contains both personal and professional records created and collected by Dr. L.E. Jones, professor of engineering. Although a small percentage of this fonds documents his personal life, the vast majority of material was created after his retirement in 1972, which he created in his capacity as Faculty Archivist and Professor Emeritus. The paucity of information from the earlier years can be attributed to the loss of many of his records during the Sir Sandford Fleming building fire in 1977.

The records have been arranged into series to reflect either the type of record or the activity involved. Records documenting Jones’ personal life are filed first, followed by papers documenting both the personal, professional and academic projects and activities that he worked on during his life. There are also special series dedicated to the archival information and records that he collected as Engineering Archivist. Photographs have been placed at the end in Series XI.

Some of the records that are included in this fonds include Professor Jones personal documents such as: his student workbooks and thesis, his letters to the editor, correspondence, and activities with his church and the Hart House Glee Club. Most of the records pertain to his professional activities and consist of documents such as: correspondence, publications, lectures and student marks. There are also a significant number of files that document his involvement in Faculty activities such as the Iron Ring Ceremony, the Hall of Distinction and the Centennial and Sesquicentennial celebrations. The work that he undertook for the Faculty providing calligraphy for the inscriptions on the awards and medals that were granted by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering are also documented in many of the files. Finally, two series are dedicated to the articles that he collected documenting the history of the Faculty as well as the archival items that he acquired as Engineering Archivist.

Despite the fact that most of the records in this fonds document Professor Jones’ personal and professional activities after his retirement, they provide an interesting glimpse into his life while assuming the role of Engineering Archivist and Professor Emeritus. As the Engineering Archivist, Jones collected a variety of rich and interesting documents pertaining to some of the early pioneers within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. In addition to collecting material, Jones also documented the Faculty by photographing notable individuals and events. This fonds would therefore be useful to those individuals interested in examining the life of Professor Jones, as well as researchers who wish to delve into the history of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

Records acquired in 2019 include drafts and notes related to the writing of his PhD thesis titled, “The undular surge in an open channel” (1941); early lecture notes and files relating to his teaching, in particular photography; further professional correspondence and memos related to his role as Engineering Archivist; additional items he collected as Engineering Archivist, in particular belonging to and/or about Prof. Louis B. Stewart and Prof. J.W. Melson; collected ephemera, artifacts, and photos about the University and the Faculty of Engineering.

Fonds consists of a notebook from 1849 belonging to Egerton Ryerson. Additionally present is a letter from the Canada Government Building addressed to Rev. Lachlin Tayor, 1876. Fonds also contains memoranda of daily appointments and reminders of President S.S. Nelles, 1875-1879 and finally, a record of theological students and their marks, 1875-1877.

Personal records of William James Callahan, Professor Emeritus of History, consisting of term papers and related material associated with his undergraduate and graduate education at Boston College and at Harvard University; personal and professional correspondence, including letters from two Spanish friends who were keen commentators on the end of the Franco regime in Spain and its successor governments, and from Jock Galloway; teaching files including lecture notes and grading books; material relating to his being principal of Victoria College and chairman of its religious studies department, and to the removal of the United Church Archives from Victoria; research notes, drafts of articles and addresses; book reviews of his own publications and book reviews written.

Personal records of Harvey Moldofsky, Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychiatry, former Director of the Centre for Sleep and Chronobiology at Toronto Western Hospital, and a world renowned specialist in sleep disorders. The records consist of correspondence, notes, raw data, addresses, publications, photographs, slides, posters, floppy disks, CDs, videos and artifacts documenting his research and other activities. Most of the files relate to his research work on sleep problems over many years, in particular those associated with the astronauts and cosmonauts on the NASA shuttle/Mir space station in the 1990’s, as part of the Microgravity, Sleep and Immune Functions in Humans (SWIF) project. Also included is the first working model of a sleep apnea machine (ca. 1983).

Fonds consists of records that pertain to the career of Canadian conductor Victor Feldbrill, including his conductor's scores for Canadian compositions (many of which he premiered), including his annotations and corrections, and composers' autographs. Fonds also includes audio recordings of performances that Feldbrill conducted, including many premiere performances of Canadian compositions, spanning Feldbrill's entire career conducting various orchestras in Canada and abroad.

This fonds mainly consists of records covering MacIntosh’s professional life from the beginning of his studies as a doctor during and just post-World War II up to and beyond his retirement in 1984. This fonds contains records related to the professional activities of Professor David Wolfe, including his early academic career, his time as Executive Coordinator for Economic and Labour Policy in the Government of Ontario, and his academic publications and activities in the following years.

Fonds includes manuscript scores of compositions and arrangements written for Boss Brass recordings. All arrangements are by Rob McConnell. The fonds also includes some original compositions by McConnell. Scores are assigned dates based on the date of recording by Boss Brass, and later by the Rob McConnell Tentet.

Personal records of the Davidson Black family, covering three generations, with particular reference to Davidson Black, the discoverer of Peking Man. Included are his diaries, extensive family correspondence and a few professional letters; files on his education, his employment, including his service in World War I but especially at Peking Union Medical College, his life in China generally, along with a few on his writings, and some artifacts. There is an extensive and well documented photo collection that helps tie the whole together. There are also a number of films made by Davidson Black between the late 1920s and 1932.

This fonds contains the records of the Principal of St. Michael's College. Records include course planning and scheduling documents, correspondence, documentation of student activities at the College, staffing and staff activities, College administration documents, and other materials.

Fonds consists of five series: Minutes, 1855-2009; Records of the Scholarship Committee, 1934-1988; Records of various Committees, 1892-2001; Correspondence, reports and other records, 1860-1908, 1961, 2002-2010; and Records of the Nominating Committee, 1961-1994.

The collection consists of manuscript poems by Lampman, a bound volume with two Lampman poems presented to the College by Duncan Campbell Scott, and various autographed poems by Lampman and Scott printed on cards or in booklets and sent as Christmas cards along with Christmas greetings to "Shortt” [the Reverend Charles Harper Shortt who was a fellow student of Lampman’s at Trinity].

Records assembled by David Grenville relating to two projects on Omond McKillop Solandt: a proposed biography of him (never completed) and a symposium in his honour (1994) that was published as Perspectives in science and technology: the legacy of Omond Solandt. The files for the biography include original documents, research notes, correspondence, notes, manuscripts and addresses by Solandt (1957-1980) and 66 audio cassette tapes (with tape summaries by Jason Ridler) of interviews Grenville did with Solandt and his colleagues. The files on the symposium contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, notes, financial records, and partial drafts and copies of the book. There are also a number of accompanying photographs.

This fonds consists of 13 works of art depicting various zoological specimens. A series of 7 works of art are oil on canvas and framed. They are for the most part untitled works, depicting the origin of life, algae, and caterpillars, among others, and were originally produced for an exhibition in the late 1960s. An unframed series of 6 oil on canvas paintings were produced by the artist for the University’s new Zoology building which opened in 1965. They were not acquired by the Department and never exhibited in the building.
This accession also contains 14 digital photographs showing Irene Nosyk painting charts for the Department of Zoology as well as 43 digital scans of an original scrapbook documenting Nosyk's work at the University of Toronto.

Personal records of James E. Till, consisting primarily of correspondence, honours and awards, teaching materials, research and administrative files, manuscripts and addresses (including slides), interviews, and photographs, documenting Dr. Till's career as a professor of medical biophysics at the University of Toronto and as a cancer specialist. Includes files on the Centre (later Joint Centre) for Bioethics and the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Ontario Cancer Institute /Princess Margaret Hospital.

The records in this accession document Dr. Alick Little’s research, teaching and publication activities over a forty-year medical career with the University of Toronto and two teaching hospitals, Sunnybrook and St. Michael’s in Toronto. Arranged in six series, the records reflect Dr. Little’s primary professional activity as a medical researcher and administrator of multiple medical studies. Areas of research include the relationship of lipids and heart disease, hereditary fructose intolerance and coronary atherosclerosis. His activities in various professional associations both in Canada and the United States, including his participation on committees, as well as his role in University of Toronto academic and administrative functions are not documented in any detail. Series 1 contains general correspondence with colleagues, students, faculty and administrators at the University of Toronto and other teaching hospitals relating to research, teaching and publication activities. Also included are letters of reference for his staff, research associates and students as well as records documenting other professional relationships with organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The records documenting his activities at Sunnybrook Hospital are primarily concerned with his participation in the Atherosclerosis Project sponsored from 1952 to 1962 by the Department of Veterans Affairs. This study was one of the first in Canada to study the link between lipids and heart disease. These records document fairly completely the administrative history of this study at Sunnybrook, the nature and scope of the research conducted by Dr. Little and his team, the data collected as well as the research results. Series 5 consists of patient case files and summarized data for both control and study groups, data files on other diseases studied in conjunction with the primary study, correspondence, annual reports, and manuscripts of articles.

Although his association with St. Michael’s Hospital dates from the early 1950’s when he established the Diabetic Clinic, the records in Series 2 document primarily his activities following the establishment of the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic (LRC) in 1973. In addition to his role as Director of the LRC (see A2002-0009), Dr. Little spearheaded the establishment of other programs at St.Michael’s Hospital. These include the Clinical Investigation Unit and the Lipid Research Laboratory. Records of the Clinical Investigation Unit’s fructosemia case study are included within this series. His participation in the hospital’s Advisory Committee, Department of Medicine and as director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is also documented in this series. Grant application records in Series 4 document requests for funds for other studies on related topics from 1968 to 1992 from the Ontario Heart Foundation (and its successor body, the Heart and Stroke Foundation) as well as Health and Welfare Canada and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These records also document through curriculum vitae and other records many of the people who were members of the study team collaborating with Dr. Little.

While the bulk of records related to Dr. Little’s work at the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic are included in A2002-0009, research material from specific studies conducted through the Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinic comprise Series 7 of the J. A. Little fonds. Documentation includes material related to the Apolipoprotein C-II Deficiency Study, the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (CPPT), as well as components of the multi-year Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinics Population (Prevalence) Studies.

Throughout his career, Dr. Little wrote, lectured and published extensively on his own and as part of a research group. Series 3 provides a fairly complete collection of his manuscripts of both published and unpublished writings dating from his time as research associate to professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. Articles on the results of the Department of Veterans Affairs study will be found in Series 5. Manuscripts relating to the official reports produced for the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Project are not among these papers and will be found in A2002-0009.

Fonds consists of material relating to Kathleen Parlow's personal life and her musical career, including photographs, correspondence, daybooks, sheet music, concert programs, press, and personal material.

Fonds consists of Myron Schaeffer's notes and drafts for lectures, articles, and an unpublished book on electronic music. The fonds also contains condolence correspondence following his death, his obituary, and scores and sketches for a couple of his electronic compositions.

Records in this fonds document Prof. Prentice’s career from his early years as a graduate student up until his retirement in 1995 with special emphasis on the 1960s to the mid 1980s. The bulk of the records (Series 1, 4, 5 and 6) focus on his pioneering research in physics and the various scientific collaborations in which he took part. These records, that include correspondence, notes, minutes of meetings and agenda of associations, papers and addresses not only document Prof. Prentice’s career but reveal much about the international co-operation among scientist in the world of experimental particle physics. They also document the various associations, committees and groups that facilitated this co-operation. Series 2, 3, 9 document his role as a teacher and faculty member of the Department of Physics. Records relating to his own education can be found in Series 7 while his activities as a social activist are documented in Series 8.

Records in this fonds document to a limited degree the two writings noted above. There are galley proofs, some correspondence and numerous reviews documenting Christianity and Classical Culture. While there is no draft of any form of Thucydides, there is one file containing correspondence, comments and reviews. It is possible however that notes found in Series 5 relate to the research done for both books as well and lectures and other writings. Series 5 is by far the most extensive series accounting for nearly half the volume of records in this fonds and include not only notes but a bibliographic card index and books from Cochrane’s library that he had annotated.

Apart from his two major publications, Cochrane gave many lectures, wrote reviews and articles. A bibliography can be found in Appendix 1. At the time of his death, it was anticipated that his Yale lectures on St. Augustine would be published as a sequel to Christianity and Classical Culture. He was also doing research on historian Carl Becker and Greek jurisprudence. Early in his career, he wrote a report for the National Council of Education on the teaching of history and civics in Canadian schools (April 1923). He later teamed up with University of Toronto Librarian W.S. Wallace, to write a school textbook entitled This Canada of Ours, an Introduction to Canadian Civics. (Oxford University Press, 1924). Records relating to all of these works can be found in Series 3 and 4.

There were other aspects of his life that are, to a limited degree, documented in these records. As noted above, he was dean of University College residence – the first to hold this position since 1899. His appointment corresponded with the opening of the men’s commons room in University College. Some routine correspondence relating to this can be found in Series 1. Cochrane’s role as a teacher is somewhat better covered with several series of lecture notes as well as annotated exams. There are however no records relating to his administration of the Department of Ancient History while he chaired the department after 1929.

While there are no records relating to his participation in the 1st World War, two aspects of his life during the 2nd World War are fairly well documented. In Series 1, there is extensive correspondence and notes relating to the Oxford evacuees, especially regarding the children of family friend Kenneth Bell and more notably the two Clark children who stayed with the Cochranes. As well, there are extensive records documenting his position as advisor to the Minister of Justice on the committee hearing appeals from prisoners interned under the Defence of Canada Regulations, including case files on several notable communists such as Tim Buck, J B. Salsberg, Jacob Penner, Leslie Morris, Fred Rose, Bill Kashtin and Stanley Ryerson. Cochrane also co-authored a Memorandum on the Communist Party in Canada for the Ministry of Justice that discusses whether the Communist Party should continue to be illegal in view of the fact that the USSR was by now an ally. These records are found in Series 6.

Finally, some family photographs have been kept and mainly document Cochrane’s two children, Mary Ann and Hugh David Cochrane.

This Fonds contains works, correspondences, and ephemera belonging to and about Joseph O’Connell. The Fonds has six main categories of materials: Academic works written, edited or translated by Joseph O’Connell; biographical information; personal correspondence; internal documents for the Department for the Study of Religion at St. Michael’s College; Class; lecture and conference notes; and materials related to the Department of World Religions at Dhaka University. Materials date from 1964 to 2012 and document O’Connell’s academic career including materials from time he spent teaching at Oxford University and creating the Department for World Religions at Dhaka University.

This fonds consists two accessions of personal records of Prof. Scott M. Eddie, Department of Economics in the University of Toronto and University of Toronto at Mississauga. The records document his academic achievements predominantly during his more than 30 years with the University of Toronto specializing in European economic history. It includes professional correspondence with colleagues and personal records relating to his employment arrangements with the University of Toronto, manuscripts of published and unpublished scholarly works in English, Hungarian and German, teaching and research materials mainly in the form of grant applications. There are also records relating to his undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota and graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This includes files relating to his PhD thesis (including a copy of the thesis) as well as class notes. In addition there are teaching files created during academic appointments to several American educational institutions such as Williams College and the University of Wisconsin in the mid-1960s and as visiting professor at Cambridge in England and other European institutions.
