Virginia Woolf fonds

The collection of more than 3000 items contains all the books hand-printed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press in London (1917–1932). (The hand-printed works include many variant issues and bindings). It is also a nearly comprehensive collection of Hogarth Press machine printed books to 1946 (the year Leonard Woolf and the Press joined Chatto &Windus) and contains many rarities and all the significant texts. Included are many variant bindings, first editions, subsequent isues and editions, presentation copies, proofs copies, limited editions and signed limited editions. A substantial number of ephemeral publications, press catalogues, announcements and notices enhance the research utility of the collection. Henri J.M. Nouwen was a close friend of Jean Vanier and was invited to join the L'Arche Trosly-Breuil and was an active member of their community from August 1985 to May 1986. His experiences at Trosly-Breuil are published in his work, "The Road to Daybreak". The fonds consists of eleven audio cassettes of lectures and retreats given by Nouwen. The fonds also contains one compact disc of photographs of various subjects, including Nouwen. The records range in date from 1985 to 2008.

The final series consists of a finding aid compiled by the donor, John Ide, Ran Ide's son and contains anecdotes and detailed explanations of all of the records at the item level. There is also a series of writings from Ran Ide's Before and After: Recollections which he wrote for his family in 1996 and several writings of memories written by John Ide.

Fonds consists of a scrapbook which contains newspaper clippings, congratulatory messages and letters, photographs and postcards related to his Rhodes Scholarship and his time at Oxford. James Carscallen's thesis from Oxford is also included along with manuscripts and notes for other works.

Fonds also contains a collection of playbills and concert bills for various performances in Toronto and overseas, as well as notices for Victoria College events including performances of the Ichthyology Ensemble, for which James Carscallen played the piano, as well as the Victoria's Winter Musical Interlude.

James Carscallen was a member of the Graduate English Renaissance Group, and the fonds contains notices for several of this group's events. There is a also a file related to an event held at Victoria College called An Evening of Romanticism in Literature, Music and Art, which contains a thank you note from Northrop Frye. Fonds also contains 2 photographs from James Carscallen's retirement from Victoria College in 1996.

Fonds consists of programs, speaking notes, correspondence, and newspaper clippings relating the Opera Exchange, an initiative co-organized by University of Toronto professors Caryl Clark and Linda Hutcheon, in conjunction with the Munk Centre for International studies (2001-2002) and the Canadian Opera Company (COC) (2003-2015).

The Opera Exchange held three symposia per year, with the aim to create a collaborative environment where students, faculty, and members of the public could discuss opera from various perspectives and disciplines, including musicology, literature, drama, history, political science, and gender studies. The program was initially named "The Humanities Initiative" and early symposia focused on works performed by the University of Toronto Opera School, Opera Atelier, and the COC.

Wilson at events and symposiums including the Citizen's Forum, World Trade Forum and the National Forum (broadcast on CBC), and to groups including the Rotary Club, the Canadian Club of Toronto, the Empire Club of Canada, and the Victoria College Reunion, etc. Also contains articles written by and about him, and reports on assignments that he was on.

Fonds also includes letters of condolence to his wife Ruth after Kenneth's death in 1952 and letters of condolence addressed to Floyd S. Chalmers, the Executive Vice-President of Maclean Hunter Publishing Company, who was the boss of Kenneth R. Wilson. Contains obituaries, published tributes and the tribute given at his memorial service. Also includes records related to his estate.

Fonds contains several photographs of Kenneth R. Wilson, including a formal portrait by Yousuf Karsh. Fonds also contains a scrapbook assembled by Kenneth R. Wilson's daughter, Nora Ruth Wilson. This scrapbook mainly consists of images cut out of magazines and newspapers as well as articles related to the end of the war (WWII).

Fonds also contains a notebook belonging to Kenneth R. Wilson's great-grandfather, James Wilson, and a video cassette tape of a tribute to Wilson.

Fonds consists of audio cassette recordings produced by Thomas Dilworth, largely consisting of interviews with individuals who personally knew the English poet and artist David Jones, as well as Dilworth’s own notes and observations while visiting locations of significance to Jones throughout the UK, and a series of conversations with Jones at an advanced age.

The recordings were created as part of Dilworth's research for the writing of Jones’ biography, the interviews aim to uncover the realities of Jones’ personal and artistic life, including his friendships and relationships, religious life, his motivations, opinions, habits, and the environments in which he lived. Dilworth compels his interviewees to recount memories and contextualize the details of Jones’ life, often referring to correspondence, written accounts, previous interviews, and his own conversations with Jones prior to his death.

The first series, Personal Files & Ephemera, includes agendas, books, guest books, rehearsal schedules, tour books, photographs, correspondences, T-shirts, business cards, magazines, photo CDs, and a personal hard drive. It also contains condolences related to, and a DVD recording of, Israelievitch's funeral.

The second series, Video, includes concert performances, rehearsal videos, prepared remarks for a speech to the Alliance française, and photographs. One video documents a Toronto Symphony Orchestra strike; another commemorates Israelievitch's 2008 retirement.

The third series, Audio, includes concert performances, university master class recordings, radio dubs. Some performances were taped at University of Toronto's Hart House; some others were taped with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The fourth series, Jacques Israelievitch - 50th Birthday Concert, includes photographs, concert programs, scrapbooks, invitation flyers, and handwritten letters. It also contains books containing original music written by Danny Rubin, Ruth Watson Henderson, Raymond Luedeke, and R. Murray Schafer, specifically for the occasion.

The fifth series, Sheet Music & Scores, includes sheet music, scores, and related correspondences. It includes music written by Oskar Morawetz, passed down from Israelievitch's mentor Josef Gingold, as well as teaching materials given to master class pupils.

The sixth series, Professional Files, includes correspondences, photographs, copies of signed contracts, television programs, concert programs, festival programs, and résumés. It also contains materials related to master classes Israelievitch taught in Japan.

The seventh series, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, includes contracts, correspondences, photographs, newspaper profiles, concert programs, meeting agendas, and meeting minutes.

The eighth series, Chautauqua Institution: Chautauqua School of Music, includes contracts, correspondences, student evaluations, class rosters, newspaper clippings, thank you letters, and photographs of Israelievitch with students.

Fonds consists of four small travel journals belonging to Margaret Gairns that describe several of her trips to Britain in the summers of 1936, 1938 and 1954. The fonds also contains a copy of her MA thesis from Victoria College on Mary Wollstonecraft, which she completed in the mid 1930s. The three photographs show Margaret Gairns with her lifelong friend Marjorie Mann (nee Diehl) VIC3T1, and Marjorie's daughter Susan, whom Margaret considered like her own child.
