Circus Barum: Diary, Notes

File consists of a hard bound red and black notebook with a handwritten label on the cover: "Circus Barum. Diary. Notes." This notebook contains a handwritten draft of the Circus Diary with editing notes by Nouwen. Notebook also contains notes about the Flying Rodleighs, likely taken by Nouwen while visiting the group. These notes include notes on the act, the program of the Circus Barum, and a summer schedule of the Circus Barum.

Back of the notebook contains notes on Steve Jenkinson, a therapy Exp. in Toronto, notes in Dutch with title "De Roep van de Armen" ["The Call of the Poor"], more notes on Steve Jenkinson, and a list of addresses under the heading "Prodigal Son Book" [likely people to whom Nouwen sent copies of The Return of the Prodigal Son]. A notebook page has also been tucked into the book with notes by Nouwen in French under the heading "Memoires de Leotard" [Memoirs of Leotard] - Paris (Chez tous les Libraires, 1860).

This draft contains no editing annotations, but includes three copies of a postcard featuring The Flying Rodleighs: three men in the middle of an exchange on the trapeze. Printed on the back of the postcards: "Wereld Sterren Circus 1995/1996. The Flying Rodleighs, a new dimension in flying trapeze; spierkracht & elegance realiseren de droom van de 'vliegende mens'." [muscular strength & elegance to realize the dream of the 'flying man'].

File consists of a draft manuscript and typescripts of "Ukrainian Diary: July 24 - August 14, 1993". Folder (1) contains a hard-bound journal with the manuscript of the "Ukrainian Diary". Folder (2) contains copies of two typescripts, made on January 10, 1996. This text was written during Nouwen's first trip to the Ukraine in 1993, with Borys Gudziak and Zenia Kushpeta.

File consists of a bound draft manuscript of Ukrainian Diary : July 24 - August 14, 1993. The draft includes a copy of a letter from Nouwen dated November 30, 1993 (on L'Arche Daybreak letterhead) to friends saying he was finally able to finish his Ukrainian Diary and it tells about how Nathan [Ball], Zenia [Kushpeta], Borys [Gudziak], and Nouwen lived while in Ukraine. Nouwen says "If you do not have time to read the whole journal you might just focus on the entries from August 1 through August 11 because those were the dates that we were actually in Ukraine. The entries from July 24 to August 1 are preparatory notes, and the entries from August 12 through the 14th are some reflections after we returned from our trip." He concludes by saying he hopes to finish the text during his time away in January (1994).

File consists of manuscripts and partial and complete typescripts for "Bread for the Journey". Folders (1) and (2) contain two hard-bound journals entitled, "Reflections for Every Day of the Year" and "Reflections for a Yearbook", respectively. Each contain handwritten journal entries made from January 1, 1996, to April 8, 1996, which serve as the basis for "Bread for the Journey". Folders (3) and (4) contain typescripts of the journal entries. Folders (5) to (9) contain hard-bound journals that form the actual manuscript for "Bread for the Journey". Folder (10) contains a faxed letter and typescript for the 'Introduction'. Folders (11) to (16) contain three complete typescripts of "Bread for the Journey".

File consists of five copies (three original copies, two original mimeographs) of a draft typescript of "Selma 1965: naar de 'deep, deep south'", about Nouwen's participation in the civil rights march from Selma, AL, to Montgomery, AL, in 1965. Nouwen wrote this paper while a theological fellow in the program of religion and psychiatry at The Menninger Clinic (Topeka, KS). File also includes a copy owned by L.J.M. Nouwen with annotations.

Folder (1) contains a bound volume of six articles including 'Professionalism, Manipulation and Contemplation in the Ministry' (typescript); 'Care' (manuscript); 'Solitude' (typescript); 'Aging and Ministry' (typescript); 'Anton T. Boisen and the Case Method in Theological Education' (typescript), and 'Case-recording in Pastoral Education'. Nouwen had these articles bound while at the University of Notre Dame. The Church and Nuclear Man

File consists of a draft typescript of an article by Nouwen titled "The Church and Nuclear Man." This article begins with a discussion of a young man named Peter, the human condition, and the condition of modern man and nuclear men. The article is then split into two parts: the condition of nuclear man ; the Church's response to nuclear man. Nouwen describes the condition of nuclear man and a generation gap in the modern western world, not between young and old, but between nuclear and pre-nuclear man. Nouwen then goes on to discuss the crisis of the Church in the modern world.

Talks and sermons

Sub-series consists of draft manuscripts and typescripts of many of Nouwen's published and unpublished talks (including informal talks and formal lectures), and sermons (including several marriage homilies). The sub-series represents Nouwen's process of preparing for public speaking, from miscellaneous notes to annotated typescripts of talks intended for publication. Some talks and sermons contain subject matter later published in Nouwen's articles and full-length books; links between them have been made where appropriate. This sub-series also includes transcripts of Nouwen's talks made by others. It has been divided into a sub-sub-series for notebooks regarding sermons and other speaking events given by Nouwen, files, and items.

Prayer and ministry

Item consists of a typescript of "Prayer and Ministry", a meditation by Nouwen based on Luke 9:28-36. Nouwen provides many examples of prayer and expounds on them using Jesus as the model. This meditation is less about ministry than it is about prayer.

Meditation given during the celebration of the life and death of Gus van der Woude

Item consists of a typescript of "Meditation given during the celebration of the life and death of Gus van der Woude, 20th April [sic], 1975", a meditation by Nouwen using Luke 24:13-34 (the road to Emmaus). This homily portrays Gus van der Woude as Jesus who is minister and pastor, and the people present at his funeral as the disciples. Just as Jesus lived after the resurrection, so van der Woude lives on as minister to his people.

Sermon on death

Item consists of a typescript of a sermon by Nouwen using Luke 9:20-31. This sermon discusses death and the ways we can learn to live more easily with our own death.
