Minutes of the University of Toronto Political Science Club, 1902-1908.

Minutes and constitutions of the Nursing Undergraduate Society and the Faculty of Nursing Student Council as well as related reports from various sub-committees.

Letter, dated 24 February, 1842, from Henry Boys, Bursar of King's College, to Richard Birdsall of Belleville, surveyor to the Canada Company and surveyor of the land on which King's College was built, requesting him not to seize the timber on Lot No. 18 in the 14th concession of Seymour Township, which the College had sold to E.D.S. Wilkins.

Correspondence of Florence Neelands with family members, including her brother, Ernest Victor, friends and fellow students while a student in modern languages at the University of Toronto. Topics include the 1894 production of 'Antigone' and the 1895 student strike. Also included are photographs, mostly of family members and friends (some identified) but also including images of tribesmen, possibly in Papua-New Guinea.

Correspondence with and about Michael Polanyi including papers regarding the Polanyi Papers Project (1973-1975), the Polanyi Society (1972-1985), obituaries. Includes files on such people as Doug Adams, Richard L. Gelwick, Jerry H. Gill, Maxine Greene, Robert E. Innis, and others. Photoprints of opening of Fisher Rare Book Library.

Volume entitled "Research on Rheumatism" and related glass plate negatives document research done by Dr. F.J. Poynton of University College Hospital London. Correspondence, clippings and a citation document the gift of this material to the Faculty of Medicine. The research was undertaken by Poynton with Dr. Alexander Pain from 1897-1913.

Course and laboratory notes taken by Daniel G. Revell while a student in Arts (1892-1894) Medicine (1898-1900), and as a Fellow in Anatomy at the University of Toronto. Also included are notes taken at this time and later when he was an instructor (1901-1907) at the University of Chicago.

Records document the activities of Selwyn Pieters, an African-Canadian part-time student, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology in 1997. Included are records relating to his academic standing, student papers, lectures given in his final years, invitations, awards, memberships and participation in student groups. He was a student representative on the Academic Board of Governing Council, 1993-1998.

Consists of records documenting the University of Toronto Natural Science Association, including minute books, regulations and rules of order, proceedings, reports and correspondence, papers read before the Association, invitations and programs and addresses,

Correspondence, manuscript notes and 2 photographs belonging to David M. Turnbull (1906-1995), former Vice-president, Health Sciences , and Executive Assistant to the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, John Hamilton, during the time of the construction of the Medical Sciences building. Includes one group photo presumed to be of audience watching ceremony re Medical Sciences Building and group photo of D.I Turnbull with Mr. and Mrs. R.R. McLaughlin (1967). Also includes a typescript "History of Woods, Gordon & Co."

Photographs, diplomas and some sparse correspondence document Harold Caples's education in the Faculty of Medicine (M.D. 1924) as well as his career as an obstetrician and gynecologist. He is reported to have been the 3rd Canadian to have attained this specialist recognition by being admitted as a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The photographs relate mainly to the University of Toronto and include the graduating class for Medicine in 1924, the University of Toronto senior basketball team in 1923-24 as well as a composite of the Nu Sigma Nu fraternity for 1923-24. The correspondence relates to his medical training both at the University of Toronto and in the United Kingdom, as well as his early work in radiology and the use of radium. There are also military documents relating to his service both in World War I and World War II.

The records relate to Isaac Albert Rumble, who graduated from Victoria College in 1902 and taught business in Toronto. The records consist of three items: an unidentified class photograph from 1900; a photograph of the graduating class in Arts from 1902; and a certificate of chartered accounting from 1913.

Copy of "Erindale College Library, the Early Years", a history of the Library submitted by Mrs. June Seel for the Histories of Libraries course at the Faculty of Library Science. Appendices contain original photographs and examples of publications of Erindale College Library.

B2014-0014 has been described at the file leve, and includes correspondence, meeting minutes, membership lists, surveys and questionnaires, publications, reports, and other organizational records of the Library Association of the University of Toronto(LAUT). LAUT’s primary activities centred around topics such as employment and working conditions, salary matters, strikes, the status of women, the stack access debate, and the academic status of librarians as faculty members.

LAUT interacted with The University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the University of Toronto Staff Association (UTSA), the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), and the Canadian Association of College and University Librarians (CACUL) over the course of its activities.

B1994-0001: Papers of Charles Kent Duff, student of engineering from 1914 to 1918 and research assistant in Electrical Engineering in the 1920s and 1930s under H.W. Price. Includes correspondence as a student, a lecture given to a class of Harold Innis', who, during their student days, was a roommate of Duff's. Also includes graduation diploma and 1 graduation photograph, along with his C.V. from the 1950s. (3 boxes, 1914-1955)

B1999-0020: Includes: Diary and related photo album covering a large part of Duff's work in China as a teacher at a mission (1921-1924, 1926) - photo album also contains photos after 1926 when he left China, documenting travels throughout England and Ontario. A second photo photo album covers his student days at the University of Toronto 1914-1918, while he was at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Also includes biographical items detailing his work with H.W. Price in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and with the Hydro-electric Commission of Ontario including photographs of an automatic regulator designed by Price and Duff. Correspondence, notes, brochures, press clippings, and publications documenting Professor Douglass' career as a speech - language pathologist; includes an audiotape of the "Song of Thanksgiving", n.d., written and sung by one of his students.

Course notes and textbooks belonging to Clara E. Clinkscale when she was a student in the Faculty of Arts at University College (BA 1912); problem sets, experiments and exam papers from the years she taught in the Department of Physics during the Second World War.

Guest book, with photographs and correspondence pertaining to her retirement from the Department of Home Economics Education, Ontario College of Education (1964-65); tribute following her death (1980).

Contains notebooks, assignments and a textbook of Lachlan Taylor Burwash, who studied Mining Engineering at the School of Practical Science from 1893-1897. Included are Applied Chemistry (1893); Applied Chemistry II (1894?); Physics (1894); Dynamics and Kinematics (1894); Constructive Design and Surveying (1895). Also three general notebooks (1889, 1894, 1895) and assignments and a textbook from Book-keeping (1891).

These records pertain to the educational and professional life of N.J. Turnbull. They consist primarily of material related to N.J. Turnbull’s time as a student at the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto, including class notes and assignments. There are also materials generated as a result of employment—both as a summer student during his university studies as well as following his graduation—which consists primarily of field notes and reports. There are also several photographs that pertain to N.J. Turnbull's career, including 432 photographs of the Royal Commission on Forestry relating to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1954.

Also included in these records are a collection of logging reports produced by John Fulton Turnbull, N.J. Turnbull's father. These reports relate predominantly to J.F. Turnbull’s position of District Forester of the North Bay Ontario Forestry Branch and the Annual Reports generated as a result.

Posters advertising the following theatrical productions: "Comedy of Errors", "The Coventry Christmas Play", "Man's desire and fleeting beauty", "Dr. Faustus". Accompanying material: theatre programmes for these plays and for "The death of Herod".

Diaries of Bessie Mabel Scott Lewis kept during her freshman and sophomore years as student in Faculty of Arts at the University of Toronto 1889-1891; invitation to attend a reception at President Loudon's house, December 13, 1890; her academic gown; article on "College Women" by Bessie Lewis (mss); and copy of article on her and her diaries in "The Chronicle" vol 48 (1975-1976). Bessie Lewis was the first Ottawa woman to attend a Canadian university full-time.

Fonds consists of correspondence, news clippings, reports, reviews, appointment calendars, and other records relating to Michael R. Marrus’s education, academic career, publishing record and university and community service. In particular, records document Prof. Marrus’s prestigious career as a historian of the Holocaust and an expert on the relationships between Christians and Jews (predominantly in France) during World War Two, and also document his involvement in ongoing concerns in the Jewish community, both pertaining to faith and Zionism. In particular, Prof. Marrus’s extensive publishing record is well-documented in contracts, reviews, and ongoing correspondence with readers and colleagues debating and exploring the assertions made in his work. The fonds also documents Prof. Marrus’s career as a student at Berkeley in the 1960s, and his return to student life with his pursuit of a Master of Studies in Law degree (MSL) from the University of Toronto in 2004. Some records also relate to Prof. Marrus’s teaching duties and appointments at the University of Toronto, as well as his service on the University’s Governing Council. One series documents his service on the International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission (1999-2001) and with the Friends of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon.

This fonds documents various facets of Prof. Armatage’s career as a filmmaker, senior programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival, and a professor of Cinema Studies and Women’s Studies at the University of Toronto. The academic activity files in Series 1 give an overview of the breadth of her interests, achievements and promotions. Lecture notes and other course materials in Series 2, along with comments on student works found in Series 3, document her teaching role. These will be especially useful to researchers interested in understanding the early beginnings of both women studies and cinema studies and how these developing academic disciplines were being taught to students. Prof. Armatage’s role as a programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival is documented in her extensive notes found in notebooks where she recorded critiques of films she was screening. These are found in Series 4. The extent of her filmmaking is documented in Series 7 and contains preserved original film elements to several of Prof. Armatage’s films, along with a limited amount of related documentation on the making of these films. Unfortunately, this fonds does not contain release prints for these titles.

This fonds has only a small amount of records relating to her published academic works as well as files relating to conferences she organized and associations in which she was active. These can be found in Series 5 and Series 6.

Personal records of Professor James E. Guillet, documenting his academic and professional career as chemist with Eastman Kodak Company, as a professor of chemistry at the University of Toronto, and as an inventor and promoter of basic research and industrial application in the use and disposal of plastics and synthetic fibres. Includes correspondence, education, administrative and teaching activities; manuscripts of published and unpublished literary works, addresses, associations and conferences, grant applications and research files, laboratory notebooks, research notes and reports of students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting professors, files on consulting and on three high-technology companies he founded, patent files, and photographs.

This fonds contains several series of records that document both Coxeter’s professional and personal life. Much of the professional correspondence in Series 2, as well as awards, tributes and obituaries found in Series 1 document his role as a mathematical mentor who influenced and inspired professional and amateur mathematicians alike. The bulk of the correspondence however mainly post dates his official retirement in 1980 and is therefore incomplete in documenting his extensive relationships with many mathematicians around the world throughout his lengthy career.

Four decades of correspondence, (1930s -1980), is not the only gap in the Coxeter fonds. Also missing is the voluminous amount of manuscripts for his articles and books along with research notes and drafts that would accompany such records. Nevertheless, what does exist of the professional correspondence, along with lectures in Series 5, course teaching notes in Series 7 and the few manuscripts and many geometrical drawings in Series 6, give researchers a window into his mathematical genius. There are also a full run of diaries, Series 4, that briefly record Coxeter’s day to day activities and thoughts.

Personal correspondence in Series 3, early family photographs in Series 9, early creative works in Series 10, diaries in Series 4 and Ph.D. records in Series 8 shed light onto various aspects of Coxeter’s life before arriving at the University of Toronto in 1936. These documents give researchers glimpses of his early childhood and upbringing, his early mastering of music, as well as, his research at Cambridge. His role as a father and husband as well as the relationships within the extended Coxeter family are best documented in a substantial part of the personal correspondence found in Series 3 as well in the daily diaries in Series 4.

The Coxeter fonds also includes some original items from other important mathematicians. There is a scrapbook of geometric drawings that belonged to fellow mathematician Alicia Boole Stott. This item dated 1899 makes up the entire Series 11. Also Coxeter acquired some of the papers belonging to 19th century British mathematician W.W. Rouse Ball presumably when he was producing further editions of one of Ball’s publications. This has been placed in Series 12.

Fonds also includes copies of Professor Coxeter's publications on mathematical problems that have been translated into other languages, and copies of Canadian and American counter-memorials and annexes to the International Court of Justice's "Delimitation of the Maritime Boundary in the Gulf of Maine Area, with covering correspondence (Coxeter was an adviser to the Canadian government).

Fonds consists primarily of records related to the continuing education programming offered by Emmanuel College. Included are workshop and course descriptions, calendars and agreements as well as program evaluations and planning documents. Fonds also includes the records of the Emmanuel College Continuing Education Committee which is responsible for the overall planning of the programming offered. Fonds contains the minutes of the meetings and reports from the Continuing Education Coordinator. The fonds contains three series.

Fonds consists of material documenting the professional life and work of Prof. Judith Friedland. Records focus on her education and career within academia, in particular as a professor, and former Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy. Material also covers some aspects of Prof. Friedland’s career working as an occupational therapist. Records include typescripts and presentation notes, administrative records from the Department of Occupational Therapy, teaching and course material, clinical notes, correspondence, awards, and biographical material.

The history of occupational therapy in Canada has significant coverage through records related to the research and publication of Prof. Friedland’s book, Restoring the Spirit, as well as through the collected records of Helene Primrose LeVesconte, Thelma Cardwell, and Isobel Robinson. Represented in Series 8 to 10, these three individuals each served as former heads of the UofT’s Department of Occupational Therapy, in addition to teaching and practicing occupational therapy. The collected historical material includes minutes, typescripts, correspondence, artifacts and teaching material.

Fonds consists of records documenting aspects of the professional life and work of Prof. Gunderson. Material reflects the Professor’s academic interests in areas such as pay equity and mandatory retirement, as well as representing his work consulting for various governmental agencies, particularly Human Resources and Social Development Canada. Records include offprints, data print-outs, correspondence, background material and court exhibits.

The fonds reflects Chelvanayakam’s career as a political leader of the Sri Lankan Tamil community, as well as documenting the daily operations of the Federal Party.

The fonds documents important political events in Sri Lanka from the 1950s to the 1970s and provides witness to the struggles faced by Sri Lankan Tamils.

The fonds also contains records relating to his family, background, and memorial material collected after his death by his wife, Emily Grace Chelvanayakam. Fonds consists of programs from his performances, a letter confirming his appointment to the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Toronto, a newspaper clipping, and his annotated copy of the Canadian Music Centre sheet music for Six Miniatures after Hokusai for violin and piano by Elliot Weisgarber (1972). The fonds also includes two catalogues for his personal music library: one current to 1976, and another current to 1997.
