File consists of a bound volume of typed and photocopied handouts for a field-based course called Ministry in Non-Religious Institutions. This is volume II of II, of which handouts 22-45 are included. There are a significant amount of article handouts by Nouwen in this volume, all of which were later published. They are:
-"Spirituality of the Religion Teacher"
-"Compassion: a study inspired by the life and the works of Vincent Van Gogh." This article is dated December 16 - January 3 1975-76 and the location is typed as "Geijsteren Holland".
There is also a series of articles on compassion numbered I - XII. They are: "Compassion with God", "Compassion with Solidarity", "Compassion and the Media", "Compassion and the Community", "Compassion and Displacement", "Compassion and Our Limitations", "Compassion and Social Criticism", "Compassion and Power", "Compassion and Confrontation", "Compassion and the New Mind", "Compassion and Dread" and finally, "Compassion Summary".

Reading notes for the summer of 1977

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen created during the summer months of 1977, many of which were written during Nouwen's Pendle Hill retreat from June 26 to July 1. Many of the reading notes are dated, and cover works by Max Frisch, William A. Barry SJ, John Howard Yoder, R.P. Martin, Parker Palmer, Thomas Hora, Kai Erikson, Margaret Lewis Furse, Gerard Dekker, Jacques Ellul, Saint Seaphim of Sarov, Gene K. Hoffman, Kenneth Wooden, Gerard Egan and Michael Cowan, Basil Pennington, Archimandrite Sophrony, Kalistos Ware, Saint Alban and St. Sergius. There are four pages of reading notes that are written on the back of a letter from Parker Palmer to Nouwen outlining the schedule of the Pendle Hill retreat. There is also a heavily annotated draft of a course syllabus for the fall 1977 lecture course Compassion. There are also eight handwritten pages of sermon notes for the Mercy Center for the dates June 6, to June 20.

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten and typed lecture notes by Nouwen as well as typed and photocopied articles and handouts, including a syllabus and class list. Many of these lecture notes are dated. Bound volume contains two typed class presentations by two students in the seminar, as well as a list of final paper topics for the seminar and a published article by Nouwen, "Compassion: Solidarity, Consolation and Comfort" which appeared in an issue of America (13 March, 1976:195-200). There is also an eight page typed article by Melanie Morrison titled "Beyond a Problem Solving Approach to Ministry".

File consists of a bound volume of typed and handwritten lecture notes, including a syllabus. Many of the typed and handwritten lecture notes by Nouwen are heavily annotated. There are also a number of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen and several "summary statements" by Gregory Youngchild reporting to Nouwen the general character of the students' reflection papers. There are two letters bound into this volume both relating to the course.

Reading notes on Vincent van Gogh: Paris - Auvers

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen on Vincent van Gogh. This is volume II of IV. Nouwen has designated this volume as "Paris- Auvers". These handwritten reading notes consist of detailed biographical notes of van Gogh's artistic and spiritual experiences of the years 1886-1889. Nouwen appears to have organised references in van Gogh's correspondence under subject headings such as "God", "Moods", "Painting", "Solidarity", etc.

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen on Vincent van Gogh. This is volume III of IV. Nouwen has designated this volume as "Vincent's Religious Development". The table of contents listing 36 items, and records the date that the items were distributed to the class. In addition to a directory of local monasteries and contemplative centers, a bibliography on western mysticism, a statement from the Community Life Committee concerning inclusive language, a list of final paper topics and a list of students owing Nouwen money or assignments, there are a number of typed and photocopied articles by Nouwen. File consists of administrative documents relating to the organization of small discussion groups for the lecture course. The file includes the original sign-up sheets for students to organize themselves into small groups of 6 to 8 people. There is also a copy of a final list of groups that was distributed to students as a handout. The file also contains a handwritten rough draft for a letter to be sent out to students who had failed to submit their mid-term self-evaluations. The draft is written on Harvard Divinity School letterhead but it is not in Nouwen's hand.

File consists of 34 typed 13 x 20 flash cards summarizing the material Nouwen collected on Merton, flash cards are in English. File also includes two typed summaries, in Dutch, of "Love and Solitude" and "The Monastic Theology of St. Aelred" as well as two black and white prints of Merton from 1941 and 1968.

Collected circus materials

File consists of a variety of materials related to the circus. Includes book lists in Dutch, sketches, a print price list, a copy of an excerpt from the book ‘A second birthday’ by William Stringfellow referring to the circus and a postcard picturing The Flying Rodleighs in action. The postcard is a promotion of the 1995/96 Wereld Sterren Circus. The file also consists of a long typed letter to The Flying Rodleighs from Nouwen dated May 14, 1991.

Circus decoupage

File consists of individual circus colour prints cut from a larger piece of paper, possibly wrapping paper, and glued to 8.5 x 11 sheets of white paper. File also includes a section of the larger paper the individual prints were taken from.

Circus programmes

File consists of six circus programmes dating from about 1993 to 1996. Three of the programmes are in German, two from ‘Circus Barum’ (ca. 1993 and ca. 1996) and one from ‘Der Grosse Asiatiche Circus’ (ca. 1993), three programmes are in Dutch from ‘Kerstcircus Ahoy 1994/1995’, ‘Wereld Sterren Circus 1995/1996’ and 'Circus Carré 1995'.

Materials about the trapeze by Steve Gossard

File consists of two versions of “A reckless era of aerial performance: The evolution of trapeze” a self-published book by Steve Gossard on the trapeze. The first book was printed in 1991 and bears an inscription to Nouwen from Gossard and the second is printed in 1994. Both books contain the article “Frank and the great leapers” by Gossard, published in Bandwagon, July/August 1990.

File consists of an unbound copy of the typescript of the interview with Jon Griggs, catcher for The Flying Rodleighs, by Nouwen which occurred in November of 1991 in Kassel. Throughout this typescript Jon's name was incorrectly transcribed as John.

File consists of an unbound copy of the typescript of the interview with Karlene Stevens, the sister of Rodleigh Stevens, by Nouwen which occurred in November of 1991 in Kassel. This copy is the same draft as the draft in 14015, but it has different annotations.

File consists of an unbound copy of the typescripts of the interview with Rodleigh Stevens by Nouwen, which occurred in November of 1991 in Kassel and which consists of two audio cassettes' worth of interview. File 14016-1 is the typescript of Tape 1 and file 14016-2 is the typescript of Tape 2. Throughout these typescripts Rodleigh Stevens' last name was incorrectly transcribed as Stephens.

File also includes two copies of a bibliography of articles (one of which with the heading: "Articles to be Xeroxed on Inter-library loan for H.J.M. Nouwen Psych Dept."; a list of typed and handwritten notes of articles by Seward Hiltner, requested by Nouwen; an original typed letter to the National Council of Churches from Nouwen requesting pamphlets in which Nouwen writes "I am presently involved in research concerning Seward Hiltner, and am trying to collect as many of his writings as possible," and a letter of response; a copy of a typed letter from Hiltner to Mrs. Kay M. File consists of a letter from Gregory Tucker requesting to spend time at Daybreak. File also includes a handwritten note, not in Nouwen's hand, summarizing the letter and saying that Nouwen is OK with the stay, if Tucker agrees to work with the Daybreak residents. File also consists of a letter from Joe Egan, Kathy Bruner and Sue Mosteller to Nouwen asking him to look over a document to be presented to Council on accompaniment. Attached are Nouwen’s typed notes and thoughts on accompaniment.

File consists of a copy of "Making the circle full" the 1988 Advent booklet for Daybreak, without pictures. File also contains original sketches to be inserted into the designated locations in the booklet.

The file also contains a prayer booklet created for December 1, 1987 Dayspring service.

American spirituality reading notes

File consists of eight pages of typed reading notes titled "Over Spiritualiteit in Amrika" [On Spirituality in America]. The notes place spirituality in political, social economic, and religious context in the United States. These notes were possibly taken from a Dutch book on American spirituality, and could have been used for a class or for research for an article.

File consists of materials pertaining to L'Arche Daybreak, materials include a newspaper article, an article from Equinox, a off print of a dictionary entry for Arche written by Nouwen and a L'Arche Daybreak folder with Friends of L'Arche Board of Directors information for 1991-1992.
