THE HERMAN GEIGER-TOREL LECTURE : "Applause, Applause - An Hommage to the symbiotic Artist-Audience-Relationship."

Johannes Debus, lecturer.Herman Berthold Gustav Geiger-Torel was born in Frankfort-am-Main on July 17, 1907. At the age of 23 he found himself in charge of the stagings at the Salzburg Festival. He joined the opera company in Troppau Czechoslovakia where Torel befriended Nicholas Goldschmidt, the associate conductor and chorus master. Because Torel was a Jew, future work in Germany was cancelled and he spent the war years in South America. It was after his first visit to Toronto in 1948 that Torel realized the possibility of building a major national opera company in Canada. Nicholas Goldschmidt became the first music director and Herman Geiger-Torel the first stage director. Together they organized the conception of what we know as the Canadian Opera Company. Because of his vision and his vast knowledge of all aspects of the opera business, Torel led the company for over 25 years through thick and thin, never compromising his artistic vision. - John Leberg In the fall of 2007, the Friends of Herman Geiger-Torel and the University of Toronto presented a concert to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Geiger-Torel and raise funds to establish the Geiger-Torel Lectures at the Faculty of Music. To contribute to this fund and support this ongoing series of lectures please contact Bruce Blandford, Director of Advancement at 416-946-3145 or bruce.blandford@utoronto.ca.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche : Songs of the Night

Produced by SNATS UofTFeaturing students from Voice Studies and Collaborative Piano Studies"Experience an enriched contemporary interaction of poetic and musical language in the classical art song genre featuring songs of the night. Frugal and fortress-like, the lobby of the Faculty of Music is the antithesis of the modern recital hall. Grand pianos centred in the vast space coupled with free-flowing musicians create intimate moments and live portraits of the song recital. Roving audience members have an opportunity to experience the performance through a contemporary perspective thus creating a sense of community engagement that is not offered during a traditional 19th Century song recital."
