Microfilm reels

Series contains newspapers and textual records such as Ceylon Patriot, Hindu Organ, Sansoni Commission Evidence, Sutantiran, Thainadu, Congress, Eelakesari, Kesari, The Independent, Thina Murasu, Sari Negar, Viduthalai, Tribune, Elath Thamilar Varalalu (or Waralaru), and Tamil Culture. Some reels contain miscellaneous articles or articles that have been organized by theme.

Correspondence

Series consists of predominantly incoming but including outgoing correspondence, 1915-1923, relating to teaching/finances/administration at Victoria University, church and educational matters, personal affairs, family (includes posthumous letters), and social issues.

Personal life and family

This series documents Dr. Farrar’s family and personal life from the 1870s to the 1970s. The records in this series have been divided into 2 sub-series and are described below.

Bound volumes

The bound volumes described herein, including the scrapbooks, were compiled by Janet Cumming McLennan as a memorial to her brother, Sir John Cunningham McLennan, Professor of Physics at the University of Toronto. Many of the photographic reproductions of correspondence and other mementos were originally framed as part of a pictorial memorial of the family.

Memorabilia

This series of memorabilia includes programmes for reunions of University College clubs (1890, 1900), programmes of the University College Modern Language Club (1892-1905, 1907-1909) and of Victoria Modern Language Club (1904-1905), undated sheet music, and a scrapbook of press clippings on political and other topics from the Toronto Globe, Saturday Night, World Wide, and The Times (1911-12).

Included are W. H. Fraser's prize books, received while a fourth year honours student in modern languages in University College in 1880. Six of these are signed, and the seventh is unsigned.

Photographs

Images consist mainly of portraits of William Dale including one from 1873 when he received his M.A. and several copies of an engraving done in 1920, one year before his death. There is also one group portrait of the General Committee of the University College, Literary and Scientific Society, 1868-1869.

Minutes and other records, 1868-1928

Series consists of minutes of Belleville Division of the Board for the Examination of Candidates and Probationers for the Ministry, 1868-1869; minutes and other records re probationers of the Conference Board of Examiners, 1875-1902; minutes of District meetings, 1903-1923, 1925; minutes of Faculty of Theology,1873-1881, 1912-1928; minutes of joint meetings of Faculty of Theology with the faculty of Knox College (United Church) and later Union Theological College, 1925-1928; and reports, 1872- 1875, curricula and degree requirements, n.d., 1874, and survey, 1899 ; book containing signatures of honorary Doctors of Divinity, 1912-1927.

Diaries and personal papers

This series contains five diaries kept by William Dale from his student days (1868) through several years as professor of classics at the University of Toronto (1892). In his article on William Dale, Robert Wilhelm states “In the pages of these journals, all of which deserve publication, we obtain an amazingly intimate picture of his feelings and thoughts on life, religion, politics, his studies, the books he has read and his views on education [1].

This series also includes a file of two pieces of correspondence - a letter of December 11, 1888 from A. M. Bascom, a “friend of father’s in Uxbridge re father’s faith and B’s advice to him to get married” [2] and an invitation to Prof. and Mrs Dale to attend convocation conferring an honorary degree on the Duke of Cornwall, Oct. 11, 1901 (B2002-0017/001(07). For the bulk of correspondence by Dale to his wife Frederika Rykman Dale see Sous-fonds 2, Series 1. Another file contains a Farm Book of expenses (1897-1906) maintained by Dale while farming his property near St. Marys, Ontario (B2002-0017/001(08).

The final item is the testimonial presented to Dale by Classical Association of University College on 20 Feb 1895, following his dismissal by the University. It is signed by members of the Association.

University education

This series consists of two files containing his diplomas for Bachelor of Arts (1871) and Master of Arts (1873) degrees from the University of Toronto, and essays written for courses of study in political science.

Photographs

Photographs document the personal and professional life of Dr. W. Harding le Riche including his time as an epidemiologist in South Africa and in Canada at the University of Toronto. There are early images of le Riche and Grant ancestors, as well as the le Riche family in Pretoria. There are some early photos of the skeleton dig at the Sterkfontein caves in 1936. Portraits and snapshots cover Le Riche’s time as a student at University of Witwatersrand and at Harvard University. Many snapshots document his arrival in Canada and his family’s early years in their adopted country.

Photographs, both amateur and professional document his professional life including attending conferences making speeches and receiving awards. Events at the University are also documented including celebrations around the 50th anniversary of the discovery of insulin in 1971 and general photos of the students and faculty of the School of Hygiene (1960-70s).

Finally, le Riche had a collection of portraits of well know scientists in the public health field who would most likely have been his peers or pioneers in this field of medicine.

Artwork, photographs, and artifact

Series consists of artwork, photographs, printing plates, and an artifact collected by McIlwraith. Material covers a range of subjects and media types. Photographs include images of archaeological digs and sites, collected images such as a cabinet card of a meeting of the Six Nation Chiefs (August 1871) and images of artifacts, as well as postcards and informal snapshots. Series also includes artwork: Inuit drawings identified with the Canadian Northern Survey Department, a series of string figure drawings made by Abel Moses and Margaret Shanoush, as well as some additional collected drawings. Finally there is one carved stone artifact that remains unidentified as to its origins or purpose.

Series consists of register of students and courses taken (marks for 1871-1873); register of student marks, 1872-1918, 1912- 1921; register of students and tuition fees, 1893-1902; registers of students, 1893-1915, 1915-1921; record of extra mural students, 1914-1921; and student registration cards, 1920 (summer), 1920-1921, 1923-1927, and 1927-1928 (including Union Theological College students, occasional and missionaries, and Arts)

Annotated books

Professor Goudge habitually annotated his books, and a selection of these volumes were presented by Professor Goudge's family to the University Archives.

This series consists of a folder of photocopied annotations from books (1873-1986), where the annotations were largely confined to the boards, and four volumes that were annotated throughout: R. I. Aaron, The Nature of Knowing (1930), A. E. Taylor, Plato (n.d.), A. N. Whitehead, Science and the Modern World (1931), and J. L. Mackie, Ethics (1977).

Teaching Appointments

Series contains materials related to the hire of teachers in Ontario schools.

Series contains two subseries: letters of application and teaching contracts.

Additional family members

Series contains documentation of seven additional Brown family members, including:

William Graham Brown (1872-1920): John Price Brown’s eldest son, graduated from the University of Toronto in approximately 1893. He died in an automobile crash in 1920.

Frank Erichsen Brown: Newton Harcourt Brown’s youngest brother, born 1878.

Robert Y. Brown: Newton Harcourt Brown’s second son, born 1906. He was in the U.S. Air Force Ground Reconnaissance in 1943; after the war, he worked in advertising.

John Price Erichsen Brown: Frank Erichsen Brown’s son, born 1906.

Isabel Lebourdais (Erichsen-Brown): Frank Erichsen Brown’s oldest daughter, born 1909.

Frances Erichsen Brown: Frank Erichsen Brown’s youngest daughter, born 1917.

Helen Allen Stacey: Charles Perry Stacey’s second wife, connected to the Brown family as the sister-in-law to Dorothy Stacey (Harcourt Brown’s wife), born 1907.

This series primarily consists of correspondence between various family members covering a range of periods and topics, for example WWII and letters from Ho Chi Minh City.

Family records and correspondence

Series consists of copies of photographs and documents pertaining to Johnstone's family. Documents include correspondence between Mary F. Williamson and Helmut Kallmann of the National Library of Canada; a copy of the petition for divorce filed by Catherine (McGregor) Johnstone against her husband John Francis Johnstone, which was later withdrawn (January 8, 1979); a copy of an article in the Toronto Star (November 26, 1927) regarding Amelia Hart and her seven husbands (Johnstone was the fourth); a copy of a letter from Mary F. Williamson to Professor Carl Morey at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto regarding Johnstone and performances of his songs; a copy of Johnstone's obituary (February 25, 1913); and a copy of scanned portraits of Johnstone. The series also consists of electronic records, including scanned images from the Johnstone family photo album (ca. 1900).

Collected materials

Series consists of press cuttings, booklets, pamphlets, census reports, and correspondence, which Patrick O'Neill collected during his political career, relating to affairs in the town of Warrenpoint and his wider constituency of County Down as well as national issues including the Anglo-Irish dispute and the partition of Ireland. Series includes materials created predominantly during the period from 1920 to 1936, with some correspondence from 1875 to 1920.

Acquisition records

Series consists of acquisition records, a list of theological books donated, loans record, acknowledgment letters to donors and other records related to gifts and donations to the library.

Personal

This series consists of records relating primarily to Dr. McCarthy’s medical student days at the University of Toronto. The pages of prescription notes appear to have belonged to his maternal grandfather, A.W. Moffat.

Subject/Correspondence files of the librarian

Series consists of subject/correspondence files of the Librarian on subjects such as exhibitions, publishing and publications, building renovations, bequests, outreach, collections, archives, acquisitions, automation, professional associations, the Toronto School of Theology and Funds, 1877-2008. Also contains material relating to the coat of arms of Victoria University, 1922-1968.

Annual reports and other records

Series consists of annual reports (incomplete), 1898-2003; reports (including those to Victoria University bodies), questionnaires, evaluations, manuals, newsletters, statistics, occasional papers, policies and statements on acquisitions, public service, facilities and other areas of activity, 1878-2006.

Photographs

Series contains photographs collected, maintained, and/or accumulated by Kathleen Parlow. Photographs depict Kathleen Parlow's life, musical career (including photographs of the Parlow String Quartet), and travels to various places including Hawaii and Asia. Also includes photographs of various individuals including but not limited to: Kathleen Parlow; Minnie Parlow; Leopold Auer; Thomas Edison; Arthur Hinton; Harold Bauer; Samuel Gilbert Colt; Willen Willeke; Johan Halvorsen; Henry Scheadieck; Erich Wolff; Ernesto Consolo; Wanda De Stein; Mischa Elman; Marie Hall; and, Jascha Heifetz.

Manuscripts and publications

This series documents the activities relating to the Professor Spencer’s writings, including correspondence, draft of manuscripts, offprints, and reviews, arranged in chronological order by date of publication. At the end of this series are files on a number of uncompleted books, for which research notes and partial manuscripts exist. Research notes have been selectively retained, primarily where there is attached correspondence regarding and notes on photocopied material.

Professor Spencer did research and some writing for three books that were never published. For The SPD Godesburg Program, 1959, the research files included photocopies of issues of News from Germany (October 1959 through 1960), many documents from the Archiv der Sozialen Demokartie and other archives in Germany, and hundreds of press clipping from the German press between 1958 and 1961. Photocopies of the newsletters and the press clippings from German archives and other sources have not been kept. For the archival sources, only the covering lists for photocopies have been retained. Published material with annotations and/or with attached notes, correspondence, and bibliographic cards have also been kept. Accompanying them are two audiotapes of interviews done in May of 1983 with Sigmund Miller, Stefan Thomas and Willie Brandt.

For the second proposed book, Deutsche Bund, 1815-1866, a small sampling of material with covering notes from German and Austrian archives has been kept, along with notes on 5” x 8” file cards, and bibliographic cards.

The third project was Professor Spencer’s uncompleted PhD thesis, the working title of which was ‘Great Britain and Egypt, 1878-1885’. The research files consist of a small selection of British Blue Books for the years 1878-1882. Photocopied material from Foreign Office records was discarded, though the references were kept.

Essays and presentations

This series contains manuscripts of unpublished essays, speeches and lectures prepared by Dale. His only publication was “Rome’s Greatness – Caesar’s Character – Lucretius” which appeared in Queen’s Quarterly 4 (1896) (pp 227-231). The manuscript has not been traced, although other essays on Roman history in this series may have been the basis for this article. Typed transcripts of many of these essays prepared by Frances Dale will be found in B2002-0017/008 (06-(08).

Graphic material

Consists of graphic material, including photographs of Gill and some taken by him and photographs and postcards of European locations, art and architecture.
