Income tax returns and records

Sub-series consists of three files containing income tax returns, payments and assessments submitted and received by Sheila Watson.

Files 1-4

These files consist of records that document the various sources from which letters and documents were donated for the project. File #2 contains donation agreements for private French donors. The dates of these forms range from 1974 to 1988. File #3 contains an inventory of French libraries and journals that were visited throughout the course of the project. File #4 is a collection of references cards that outline the different public and private institutions that donated documents or letters to the project. These cards outline the name of the institution or figure, location, and a listing of the letters donated to the project.

File consists of a three pages of handwritten notes regarding a philosopher [Boleuphoke?] and his support of natural religion.

52 Pickup 76

File consists of 1 complete box set of 52 Pickup 76 and 26 display copies of broadsides featured in the series. The loose broadsides, likely part of an incomplete exhibition set, range in size and are unfolded.

The 52 Pickup 76 collection features 52 poems by 52 emerging poets, printed on flat or uniformly folded broadsides using a variety of typefaces and coloured paper. The box set includes a title page, colophon, specification sheet, and afterword by editor Greg Gatenby. The specification sheet notes that the paper for the box was made from blue jeans. The box set is #96 of an edition of 100 copies, and is signed and numbered by Gatenby.

A complete list of the poems and poets in numbered sequence appears below. Items in bold have a duplicate stand-alone broadside present in the collection.

Opposites attract [Seth Scriver]

File consists of 1 copy of Opposites attract, a limited edition series of original illustrations by Seth Scriver. The series consists of 7 broadsides on multi-coloured paper collected together in a paper enclosure. The illustrations were printed by Someone.ca using photopolymer plates and hand set type.

Letters from Gwen McGrenere

File consists of letters from Gwen McGrenere to Janet Somerville and Sr. Mary Jo Leddy (co-editors of the Catholic New Times) and copies of letters from Somerville and Leddy to McGrenere, all regarding the possibility of McGrenere writing for the newspaper on the topic of science and religion. File also includes copies of short reflections and articles written by McGrenere and a photocopy of an article by Amy Gross called “Thinking like a woman” published in the May 1982 issue of Vogue.

Ave Maria Press files

Sub-series consists of five files which deal with Nouwen's personal and professional dealings with Ave Maria Press, a publishing company located in Notre Dame, Indiana. Much of the correspondence is between Nouwen or his assistants and Eugene S. Geissler, Book Editor or Frank Cunningham, Editor for Ave Maria Press. Specific Nouwen publications mentioned in the files include In Memoriam, With Open Hands, Out of Solitude, Compassion, Love in a Fearful Land, and audio cassettes A Spirituality of Waiting, Aging and Ministry, Marriage and Ministry and Spirituality and the Family.

General financial files

Sub-series consists of Nouwen's general financial files kept by his staff between 1980 and 1997. Includes material regarding bank accounts, credit cards, expenses, financial statements, frequent flyer programs, income from donations, honorariums, royalties and stipend, income tax, car, health and travel insurance and RRSP/retirement funds. Includes applications, correspondence, forms, informational pamphlets and booklets, invoices, newsletters, receipts, reports, and statements. Photographs accompany some correspondence (none of which are of Nouwen).
The files have been grouped chronologically according to the Nouwen staff member(s) responsible for the creation of the majority of the file. There are four groupings: files 1270-1281 consist of material from 1980 to 1986 created predominantly by Carol Plantinga and Peter Weiskel; files 1282-1303 consist material from 1986 to 1995 predominantly created by Connie Ellis; files 1304-1311 consist of material from 1984 to 1993 predominantly created by Lydia Banducci; and files 1312-1404 consist of material from 1985 to 1997 predominantly created by Margaret Sutton. Within each chronological grouping the material is arranged alphabetically by file title. There is also one file containing financial invoices, receipts, and financial statements from the period of 1956 - 1967.

File consists of seventy-four slides of Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights march (attended by Nouwen), which began in Selma, AL, on March 21, 1965, and arrived in Montgomery, AL, on March 25, 1965. File also contains seven slides taken by or featuring Nouwen, including one slide featuring Nouwen in military uniform, one slide of the original Menninger Clinic, one slide taken by Nouwen during a trip, and four slides from a University of Notre Dame football game.

Covenant Retreat 1981

File consists of 23 audio cassettes featuring talks given at a Covenant Retreat held from April 5-11, 1981. The talks are in French and English.

1. "A travers la plessure du coeur"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a Covenant Retreat (Retraite de l'Alliance) in April 1984, with talks by Pere M.D. Philippe, O.P. The title of the retreat was, "L'Alliance et le mystere de la croix."

Books and articles

Sub-series consists of draft manuscripts and typescripts of many of Nouwen's published and unpublished books and articles, including forewords, introductions and afterwords for other authors' books. The sub-series represents Nouwen's writing process, from miscellaneous notes and journal entries to galley and print proofs. Some articles contain subject matter later published in Nouwen's full-length books; links between them have been made where appropriate. The sub-series has been divided into sub-sub-series for each of Nouwen's book-length projects, as well as files.

Election materials

Series consists of flyers, posters, booklets, official forms and documents, correspondence, and newspaper articles regarding Patrick O'Neill's role as presiding officer at a polling station in the 1918 Irish election, his campaign in the 1920 election for county councillors, and his campaigns in the 1921 and 1929 general elections. Series also includes correspondence regarding the Boundary Commission, O'Neill's decision to take his seat in parliament in 1926, the creation of the National League of the North, and his decision to retire. Series is arranged chronologically.

The sixth parliament of George III. 1798-1800

File consists of a draft of Teresa V. O'Neill's thesis entitled "The sixth parliament of George III. 1798-1800." O'Neill submitted this thesis for her MA in Modern Irish History at the University College of Dublin, for which she received First Class Honours when she graduated in 1943.

Community Council files

Series consists of minutes of regular meetings and correspondence files of the Daybreak Community Council, established to permit participation by staff and core members in the key communication and decision making activities of the community.
The types of records include: incoming and outgoing correspondence; agendas and minutes of meetings of the council; special research reports; calendars; program proposals; event planning and administration documents.
Subjects found in the series include: Daybreak constitution; work programs; spirituality; celebration of holidays and community events; administrative and program analysis and restructuring. See file descriptions for more detailed content information.
