Gerald Edward Blake fonds

Fonds consists of 3 accessions

B2003-0023 (7 boxes, 1892-1921): This accession documents the short life of Gerald Edward Blake from his birth in 1892, his education at Ridley College and the University of Toronto, to his death on the battlefields of France during World War I in 1916. Series 1 and 3 contain his diaries and correspondence to family members in which he describes his experiences at school, his trips to Britain and France in 1913 and most significantly, his 13 months of service during World War I. The majority of his letters are to his mother during his months overseas, but there are also letters to his sisters, Margaret (1893-1963), Constance (1896-1979) and his brother, Verschoyle (1899-1971). Some of these letters are attached to typescript copies, prepared by his brother Verschoyle prior to 1971. Capt. Blake also sent postcards annotated by him which provide a photographic record of British army life in camp, as well as official coloured war service postcards of the British army in action. Other postcards of street scenes in France and Britain helped to illustrate the places he had been including the town of Pozières near which he was killed in 1916 (Series 5). Other war records include his military orders and notes while at the front, and his copy of active service bible. Correspondence and photographs also document his close friendship with his cousins Hume Wrong (1894 – 1954; BA 1915) and Harold Wrong (b.1891; BA 1913), who was also killed in action in July 1916. After Gerald’s death, Hume Wrong assisted Mrs. Blake in making arrangements for her son’s grave site in France and sent home photographs of the cemetery which he visited in 1920-1921 (Series 5). In addition, Mrs. Blake received other remembrances of her son’s service such as a commemorative medal from the British Army, a copy of the history of his battalion’s service in the War and a copy of Volume II of the British Roll of Honour (Series 4).

Menus types included placemat menus, single sheet menus, trifold and four fold, five fold and seven fold menus and menus in booklet style. Some menus are laminated while others are in vinyl enclosures. Menus range from take away and delivery to eat in and include wine lists as well.

Menus from hotels, cruises and airlines are also included in this series.

The series is divided into 6 subseries: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America. The division is based on the 7-continent model, substituting Australia as a continent and replacing it with Oceania for greater geographical coverage.

Personal

Davidson Black kept a diary throughout much of his adult life. There are 28 volumes in this series. The earliest is for 1902, the year he entered medicine at the University of Toronto; it includes a tally of monthly expenses. The last diary is for 1934, the final entry being for 9 March, six days before his death. For each of the years 1922 and 1925, there are two volumes of diaries. There are no diaries present for the years 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911, and 1912. The diary Davidson kept while on active service during World War I is filed with his service records in Series 4. Most of the entries are brief as the diaries, except for 1902, are small. Some of the loose entries with the diaries are longer.

A number of items document his personal activities. The earliest is a small well-thumbed copy of 'The Book of Common Prayer', presented to him by his mother on his 9th birthday in 1893. A notebook, a journal, and permits document his early interest in ornithology. Finally, there are files of memorabilia, poems and sketches, and on honours bestowed on him later in life, along with twelve diplomas and certificates.

Other activities

In 1921, Dr. Benson was elected the first president of the Women’s Athletic Association of University of Toronto and was involved from the beginning in the campaign to build an athletic building for women. Among the records relating to this activity are correspondence, notes, financial statements and blueprints of proposed buildings. Also included in this series are correspondence, minutes and reports relating to her work as Chair of the Foreign Committee of the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) focusing primarily on an international survey on leadership (1930-1932). Other documents include two undated and unsigned manuscripts of stories, a collection of cards acquired during a trip to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, and a scrapbook of pressed flowers with identification collected by Clara Benson ca 1890’s.

Included is William's correspondence regarding the University of Toronto Rowing Club; Harriet's correspondence relating to and drafts of writing assignments for the Varsity (1930-1934), and her course notes in Household Economics (1930-1932). Also student handbooks, programmes, greeting cards, song sheets, and a medal to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Class of 1934, Faculty of Arts.

This series contains certificates and diplomas, correspondence, course and lab notes, term papers and memorabilia documenting aspects of Davidson Black’s education, running from the Wellesley School through Harbord Collegiate and the Faculties of Medicine and Arts at the University of Toronto. There is also a file on Davidson’s summer project in 1907 to earn money for his Bachelor of Arts program, prospecting in the Temagami Forest Reserve.

Huntsman 2005 accession

This accession consists of diaries, diplomas, research files (including fish scales), memoranda, minutes, notes, reports, photographs and, especially, correspondence, manuscripts and publications documenting Dr. Huntsman’s career as a marine biologist and an expert on the behaviour of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The correspondence is primarily professional, centres on officials at the Biological (later Fisheries Research) Board of Canada, and colleagues (especially Thomas Goudge) at the University of Toronto and elsewhere, including Ralph W. Burhoe of the Institute on Religion in the Age of Science. There are files on numerous conferences, organizations such as the Ontario advisory committees on Lake Erie and Lake Huron fisheries, the Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Lunch Club at the University of Toronto. Dr. Huntsman’s writings are primarily from his post-retirement years and centre on issues relating to fisheries research, especially the movement of salmon, and critiques of evolution.

Lacquer tiffin boxes

Black lacquer boxes with a floral painted pattern. Contains a note from Spiller with the following information: tiffin boxes were collected by a woman who attended the tiffin in honour of Chinese viceroy Li Hung Chung, possibly on the West coast. Tiffins contain dried coconut, watermelon seeds, and preserved bird's nest.

Ray Fletcher Farquharson sous-fonds

These records include Ray Farquharson's birth certificate, exams, honours, awards and ephemera. It also includes itineraries from professional trips and correspondence, primarily from Dr. and Mrs. Farquharson to Dr. Helen (Nell) Farquharson. Following his death, letters of condolence, information about the memorial lecture series and other posthumous honours have been collected.

Records belonging to Dr. Ray Farquharson (1897-1965) document professional trips, meetings and awards. Included is correspondence, notes, agenda and memorabilia. Also included in this donation are records relating to Dr. Ray Farquharson collected by colleagues James Dauphinee and Bob Kerr and passed to the Farquharson family. Finally, there are a set of early letters belonging to Dr. Farquharson’s uncle, University of Toronto alumnus, Dr. Edgar Nesbitt Coutts (M.B. 1900). The letters mainly cover his time as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the First World War and afterwards in a Swiss sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis. Barnstead, and document her work as the first Director of the Library School at the Ontario College of Education - the original incarnation of the Faculty of Information. The records document Barnstead's work in developing formalized training at the Library School during her tenure from 1928 to 1951. The records include correspondence with libraries and other library schools, UofT staff and faculty, drafts of manuscripts and articles written by Barnstead, School/Faculty informational bulletins, information on course programming and development, as well as some miscellaneous collected material relating generally to librarianship and library studies.

B2013-0020: 1910-1918: Documents, photographs and artifacts document three generations of the Peterkin - Williamson family. Most of the items relate to Marie Peterkin (B.A. 1919) including a photo album with family photos, photos of fellow students, house parties in Bala and the Toronto Island, convocation,, fellow female workers on break at the munitions factory during World War I. There are also a few items for Ruby Peterkin, aunt to Marie Peterkin, who served in Salinika as nurse in the No. 4 Canadian General Hospital. There are a few photos including two from Salonika as well as an engraved letter opener from her time overseas. Marie Peterkin married John Williamson (B.A. 1910) and their daughter is the donor of this accession Mary Williamson (B.A. 1955). This accession includes the graduating portrait for each as well as two UT letters earned by Mary.

B2014-0013: Photo album originally belonged to John D. Williamson (B.A. 1910) and documents various members and activities of the Williamson family members. Photos show campus views of grounds and students ca. 1906 – 1917 as well as a trip to western Canada 1912, and to Temagami 1916 and 1917. There are also two portraits of J.Peter Williamson, son of John D. Williamson.

B2017-0015: Includes 60th Anniversary Distinguished Graduate Award medal, won by Mary Williamson, alumnus of the Faculty of Library and Information Science. Includes accompanying photograph and letter. One photograph of Marie Peterkin (Williamson) taken ca. 1950 with former U.C. classamate Vida Peene (U.C. 1919). Finally there are a series of photographer proof portraits of J.Peter Williamson in military uniform, 1951.

B2019-0026: Consists of Two binders of collected documents on Marie Peterkin (B.A. 1919) and John Williamson (B.A. 1910) including memoriabilia, legal documents, photographs, diaires, correspondence and some family histories. This accession also has a photo album documenting the couple's trips to Bermuda and Florida in the 1950s and 1960s. There are two oversized certificates for John Williamson.

Fonds consists of records created by both Ernest Findlar, professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. Includes research, drafts, correspondence, and material related to his service in WWI. Series contains three-dimensional memorabilia objects, including three glass plate negatives from Kathleen Parlow's time in Petersburg; three framed photographs of Parlow's parents[?]; two metal stamps of Parlow with her violin; two framed photographs of Parlow (one as a young child); the National Award in Music medal from the University of Alberta; a family photo album, including a family tree; an Edison cylinder record of Parlow playing Nocturne, Op. 9, no. 2 in E-flat Major by Chopin (recorded 1913); an Edison 78 RPM record of Parlow playing Melodie by Tchaikovsky; and, 2 audio cassettes with recordings of the Parlow String Quartet. Series also includes drawings and watercolours of Kathleen Parlow.

Royal Opera, Covent Garden : programme

File contains a souvenir, silk program from a gala performance by command of His Majesty the King in honour of the visit of the President of the French Republic. The concert featured the following soloists: Luisa Tetrazzini (Italian coloratura soprano), Caroline Hatchard (British soprano), John McCormack (Irish tenor), and Nellie Melba (Australian soprano).
