The commissioning of Canadian composers to write additional music for schools was part of Phase 3 for the John Adaskin Project (see information sheets in Series D).

Canadian University Music Society paper

File consists of correspondence and drafts relating to an unpublished article by Patricia Shand on the John Adaskin Project for Canadian University Music Review. The paper, "The John Adaskin Project (Canadian Music for Schools)" was originally fiven at the 1984 Canadian University Music Society (CUMS) Conference in Guelph, Ontario, presented June 2, 1984. File includes notes, drafts, and the final copy of Shand's conference paper, as well as revisions for submission to the CUMS journal.

Canadian Music Educators' Association and Canadian Music Centre project : articles

File consists of newspaper clippings and copies of articles on the John Adaskin Project as the joint venture of the Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA) and the Canadian Music Centre (CMC). The file includes reports and articles on the project for the following publications: Journal of the Canadian Society for Education through Art (1976); Manitoba Music Educator (March 1976); The Canadian Music Educator (October 1975, Spring 1975); Bulletin: Canadian Conference of the Arts (February 1976); Accents: The Newsletter of the Music Education Council of the New Brunswick Teachers' Association (February 1976).

Canadian Music Educators' Association convention : Edmonton

File consists of correspondence between Patricia (Pat) Shand, R.E. (Ron) Stephens, K.I. Bray, and Robert (Bob) M. Cook regarding the Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA) national conference in Edmonton, Albert (April 1-3, 1975), as well as Shand's annotated program from the event. Shand led a session entitled "Canadian Music for Schools: John Adaskin Project" (April 3, 1975).

File consists of a "Revised plan for Canadian Contemporary Graded Educational Music," submitted by John Adaskin, Executive Secretary of the Canadian Music Centre (December 28, 1961) and an article by R. Murray Schafer, "What's happening to music in Canada?: plenty....and lots more to come," which was published in Music across Canada, vol. 1, no. 4 (May 1963) under the title "Canadian Music for Education."

Collection consists of records of the activities of the John Adaskin Project, formerly the Graded Educational Music Plan, started by John Adaskin in 1961 at the Canadian Music Centre. Records include notes and drafts of articles, lectures, presentations, and workshops on the project; records and correspondence relating to commissions by the project; correspondence with contributors and educators; guidelines for submissions; lists of publications; and records from the first three symposiums and seminars hosted by the project (1963, 1965, and 1967).
