Includes an extensive collection of Yiddish folk songs and other songs, primarily in Yiddish and Hebrew, including Canonical and Art Songs. Also includes some rare and fragile music and song books; cassettes of 'Naomis Programs' and collected songs; as well as research notes, lecture-recital material, workshops and presentations created and presented by Bell.

In his capacities as a minister, teacher and administrator, Nathanael Burwash exerted tremendous influence on both the course of the Methodist Church in Canada and the development of the educational system in Ontario for over half a century. In view of this dual role, Burwash's papers are of cardinal interest to religious and educational historians; nevertheless, they also contain valuable insights into the political, social and economic conditions in Canada between 1860 and the end of the First World War. The collection held by the Archives includes a large selection of Burwash's correspondence, diaries, sermons, addresses, essays, lectures, manuscripts, and biographical material.

Burwash's correspondence has been organized chronologically and thematically. The bulk of the material has been classified as general correspondence, but, where the volume or importance of correspondence on a particular subject warranted, a separate file was created. When ever possible, Burwash's replies were placed with the letters in response to which they were written. The major portion of the correspondence relates to the administration of Victoria College: included are letters from students seeking advice, requests for academic recommendations and honourary degrees, applications for staff openings and salary increases, questions concerning curriculum and examinations and debates over the relationship between the university and the government. The close ties between Victoria and other Methodist institutions such as Albert College, Columbian Methodist College and Wesley College in Winnipeg are clearly illustrated. Information concerning the university's financial arrangements and endowments has largely been segregated, but the researcher should also scan the general correspondence and the Massey family correspondence for a more complete picture. The family correspondence provides insights into Burwash's private opinions and reflects many values of Canadian family life. Although there are occasional questions regarding spiritual matters, the problems of training young men for the ministry or mission work, there are not as many as might be expected from the nature of Burwash's involvements. The bulk of the religious correspondence deals with the issue of Higher Criticism (particularly the Workman and Jackson controversies). Because Burwash was generally perceived to be a moderate liberal in theological matters, he received solicitations for support from both conservatives and radicals within the Methodist Church.

Although a number of the diaries are little more than listings of appointments and meetings, others are detailed accounts of Burwash's daily activities as a young preacher and professor and outline the nature of his spiritual concerns. The division of the remainder of the material into sermons, addresses, lectures, articles, essays, and manuscripts was often difficult and, of necessity, occasionally arbitrary. Within each category, the material was arranged chronologically. Generally, any piece containing a text (unless a title indicated otherwise) was classified as a sermon; pieces addressed to an audience (usually without a text) were labelled as addresses or lectures. The lecture notes contain examples of Burwash's work both as a student and as a teacher. Compositions which seem to have been written strictly for publication rather than for an audience were considered to be essays, articles, or manuscripts. The collection includes the complete manuscript for A Manual of Christian Theology in the Inductive Method and the manuscript and several drafts of The History of Victoria College.

Burwash's writings reflect an emphasis on the inner spiritual life of the individual and the importance of such Wesleyan traditions as Christian perfection. His work was an interesting example of a nineteenth century struggle to reconcile spiritual and scientific truths, although like most Methodists he was confident that all modes of truth were ultimately harmonious. Burwash's articulation of Wesleyan doctrine was designed to separate superficial and fundamental concepts in order to prepare a doctrinal basis for church union. The biographical and autobiographical material,initially prepared by Burwash and subsequently by his eldest son Edward,is incomplete in that it deals only with the period of Burwash's life prior to the 1890's. However, it contains interesting information on the nature of the educational system in Ontario, the lifestyle of a young preacher in both rural and urban stations, and the problems facing Victoria College immediately prior to federation.

The fonds is arranged in five series: Correspondence, 1965-1925; Diaries and journal, 1859-1914; Writing, 1860-1917; Notes and manuscripts, 1862-1923; and Records, 1863-1927.

The collection is comprised of minutes of the committee's executive and annual meetings, financial statements, statistics, correspondence, church listings, membership lists, mailing lists, directories, newsletters, publicity, pamphlets and proofs. These papers are mostly concerned with the affairs of the National and Regional Committees, however the last five boxes contain the papers of the Metropolitan Toronto Inter-Faith Immigration Committee.

Fonds consists of the administrative records of New Music Concerts (NMC), from its first concert in 1972 to 2020. Records consist of administrative and financial records, including correspondence with composers, performers, and concert venues, budgets, grant applications, and board meeting minutes; concert planning documents, including touring records; and promotion and publicity documents, including programs, brochures, posters, reviews, advertisements, and press releases. The fonds also includes select audio and video recordings of NMC concerts.

The collection consists primarily of business records of the New Play Society, including those for its theatre school, as well as production files, correspondence, photographs and clippings. Material on Dora Mavor Moore can be found in the collection of her papers (MS Coll 00207).

The Nick Thierry fonds consists of 320 issues of Swim News (formerly Swim Canada) and research for articles contained within the magazine, various correspondence with people involved and interested in competitive swimming, a large amount of handwritten and typed results from numerous swim meets and events, and a series of letters collected from Thierry’s correspondence with Howard Firby, who served as the head coach of Canada’s swim teams during the 1964 Olympic Games and the 1966 Commonwealth Games. The fonds also contains bulletins published by the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association (CSCA), a number of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings from swimming events, Thierry’s collection of postcards and media passes to major swim meets, and the official binders issued to media members for the XI Commonwealth Games in Edmonton and XXI Olympics in Montreal. The material in the Thierry fonds has been divided into the following 7 series entitled; Swim News, Correspondence, Swim Meets: Results, Rankings and Guides, CSCA Bulletins, Swimming History Texts and Scrapbooks, Collected Memorabilia and Artifacts, and Photographs.

The archive of celebrated Canadian film director-producer Norman Jewison contains photographs and publicity materials, papers and correspondence, shooting scripts and schedules primarily for films directed or produced by Jewison between the years 1975 and 2003. Materials related to the films Fiddler on the Roof, …And Justice for All, A Soldier’s Story, Moonstruck, The Hurricane, The Statement and others undertaken by Jewison are held in this collection.

These records pertain to the educational and professional life of N.J. Turnbull. They consist primarily of material related to N.J. Turnbull’s time as a student at the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto, including class notes and assignments. There are also materials generated as a result of employment—both as a summer student during his university studies as well as following his graduation—which consists primarily of field notes and reports. There are also several photographs that pertain to N.J. Turnbull's career, including 432 photographs of the Royal Commission on Forestry relating to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1954.

Also included in these records are a collection of logging reports produced by John Fulton Turnbull, N.J. Turnbull's father. These reports relate predominantly to J.F. Turnbull’s position of District Forester of the North Bay Ontario Forestry Branch and the Annual Reports generated as a result.

B2018-0005 contains a file of mimeographed and annotated copies of two one-act plays by Gilbert Norwood: "Brightening the Classics: a college farce in one act" and and "Pandora's Box", written in 1932 and 1933 and produced in the theatre space at the University College Women's Union in 1934, with a covering letter from Ruth Davidson, wife of Edward ("Ted") Moss Davidson (BA, UC 1934) who acted in both plays.

The first series, ‘NOW Communications Inc.’, consists mainly of textual material relating to the production of the magazine. It is divided into 14 sections: ‘Administration’, ‘Advertising’, ‘Contracts’, ‘Awards’, ‘Circulation’, ‘Correspondence’, ‘Ephemera’, ‘Financial’, ‘Legal’, ‘Photography’, ‘Posters’, ‘Printing Subcontracts’, ‘Promotional’, ‘Publicity’, and ‘Research’. This series also includes 39 bound volumes of NOW Magazine (a complete run dating from Summer 1981 to August 2001).

The second series, ‘NOW Magazine Photo Archive’ consists of several thousand photographs related to the production of NOW Magazine (Vols. 1- 9). These photos document current events, personalities, buildings and businesses, streetscapes, conventions, demonstrations and rallies, theatre rehearsals and performances, film production stills, promotional portraits, and advertising and product shots used for advertising/illustrations/cover shots. This also includes 23 pieces of original artwork.

The third series, ‘The Photo Series’, consists of several thousand photographs related to the production of NOW Magazine (Vols. 10 - 13).
The photographs feature the same subject matter as those in the second series.

The fourth series, ‘NOW Magazine Audiovisual’, consists of audio and video items including production meetings, speeches, radio advertisements, interviews with Michael Hollet and Alice Klein, interviews with celebrities conducted by Michael Hollett, seminars, music compilations, and radio and television profiles of NOW Magazine.

Consists of papers relating to the family of William Oelschlager including correspondence from him to his family, journals of his trips to Manitoba and to Europe, drafts of his report to the Minister of Agriculture and his letter to the Mayor and Council of the town of Berlin, passports of other family members, extract from a birth certificate, autograph albums and two issues of the Daily Telegraph (Berlin) Ont. with an account of his funeral and that of his grand-daughter Martha. Explanatory notes about the Oelschlager Family by his great grand-daughter, Joyce Brown, are included.

The fonds deals with records relating to St Hilda's College from its founding until 2004. Most of them are from the office of the head of St Hilda's College (whose title changed over the years from Lady Principal to Principal and Dean of Women to Dean of Women and Dean of St Hilda's. Records include correspondence, student records, committee minutes, reports and statistics, photographs, policies, budgets and other administrative records. Note that there are no documents for the period 1953-1978 when Katharine Darroch was in office.

Fonds consists of a scrapbook with programs and press notices of Olive Scholey's performances as a contralto, at the Toronto College of Music, and in other venues in Southern Ontario.

Papers of Dr. Oliver Bowles, graduate of the University of Toronto (B.A. 1907, MA 1908) including a personal recollection of his education both formal and informal. This essay entitled "Recollections of an Uphill Road to Learning" describes life as a student at the University during the early years of this century. Also included is a few pieces of correspondence and a publication list.

When Dr. Solandt started donating his personal records to the University of Toronto Archives in 1988, beginning with his certificates and diplomas, the richness, diversity, and volume of the material still to come was only hinted at. Over the next five years further donations were made, punctuated by telephone conversations about the need for still more boxes and folders and archival methods of arrangement and description. Dr. Solandt was very interested in our professional approach to managing his records and was determined (as always, I was to discover) to do things in the proper manner. Twenty years after his death his widow, Vaire, donated the last of his personal records; they had been partially arranged by Dr. Solandt and stored above the garage at the Wolfe Den.

Dr. Solandt’s running commentary on his past life, as the boxes piled up for transfer to the Archives, proved of considerable assistance. I faced a huge volume of records documenting wide-ranging, complex, and often inter-related events, which he had divided into categories roughly equivalent to his numerous activities. These were to form the basis of most of the forty-six series in this inventory. In addition, beginning several years before, he had undertaken to do what few individuals have ever had the time or the inclination to attempt – an overview of each principal activity. There are more than twenty of these, totalling several hundred pages. Each demonstrates the clarity of thought and an understanding of the essentials of any problem facing him that characterized his work and enabled him often to juggle several divergent projects at once. They proved invaluable as I sought to make sense of the mountain of material in front of me, and should be equally useful to researchers.

The records, dating from 1915 to 1994, encompass most of the media one might expect to find in an archives, the bulk being textual records, graphic material (primarily photographs and slides), maps and plans, and publications. The material pertaining to his personal life consists primarily of biographical files (including press coverage), correspondence and diaries, files on his travels and, especially, on his canoe trips as part of the “Voyageurs” group.

Most of the records, not surprisingly, document his extraordinarily active and productive professional life, from the beginning of World War II to the end of the 1980s. The earlier portions of his career, especially his years with the Defence Research Board, Canadian National Railways, de Havilland, and the Electric Reduction Company are not well represented here as the records are largely found elsewhere. The volume of records begin to pick up in the mid-1960s and the greatest strength is to be found in those generated from the early 1970s on, when Dr. Solandt’s activities became complex indeed, with directorships in many companies, many consultancies, trusteeships and advisory committees. Three activities which seemed to please him most were ...the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories [1976-1982]..consultancies for international agricultural and medical research [1975-1988]...and Senior Consultant to the Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto, enabling him to retain a close association with the University.

This finding aid for this fonds is arranged by series, with the accessions clearly designated. In the series that are grouped by activity, the arrangement, once career changes are identified, is largely chronological. The principal concentration of activity in any project is the determining factor in the order. Organizations that predominate in one series may be represented in another, particularly those dealing with international agricultural and medical research, such as the umbrella Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Most accessions have more than one series.

Dr. Solandt’s abiding interest in scientific research and development is a recurring theme throughout and was instrumental, for instance, to his agreeing to chair the newly established Science Council of Canada (1966) and in joining the IMASCO/CDC Research Foundation (1978). Similarly, it was his acknowledged excellence as a manager that, in later years, brought him into contact with the international research agencies that needed professional advice on internal structural problems. On another level, the canoe trips he began at the age of 41 nurtured an interest in wilderness conservation and, subsequently, involvement with the Quetico Foundation and the Wilderness Research Foundation. One factor linking all these activities was Dr. Solandt’s inter-disciplinary approach to ideas and problem solving; it is a recurring theme in his correspondence and in his introductions to the series.

Collection consists of records from early conventions of the Ontario Music Teachers' Association (OMTA), primarily from the first convention, held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto (October 6-8, 1936). Papers include programs (1936-1944); correspondence; meeting minutes; lists of registrants; scripts for speeches, including an address by Sir Ernest MacMillan at the first convention; drafts of the OMTA constitution; and proceedings (1936, 1937).

The collection consists of manuscripts, research notes and correspondence related to McFee's published and unpublished material. It includes writing assignments from the 1960s, as well as drafts and notes for her book Sandbars and its sequel, Silent Eyes.

Fonds consists of programs, speaking notes, correspondence, and newspaper clippings relating the Opera Exchange, an initiative co-organized by University of Toronto professors Caryl Clark and Linda Hutcheon, in conjunction with the Munk Centre for International studies (2001-2002) and the Canadian Opera Company (COC) (2003-2015).

The Opera Exchange held three symposia per year, with the aim to create a collaborative environment where students, faculty, and members of the public could discuss opera from various perspectives and disciplines, including musicology, literature, drama, history, political science, and gender studies. Dr. Paul Michael O'Sullivan's papers include: a complete manuscript of a dictionary of anatomical terms; correspondence and teaching notes. Dr. Paul MacLaren O'Sullivan's papers consist primarily of teaching notes, ca.1950-1970s.

The collection consists of research materials for Schneid's unpublished book on 20th century Jewish artists in Europe, manuscripts for his published and unpublished works, and galleys for his published writings. The research materials include correspondence with more than 120 Jewish artists, copies of their exhibition catalogues, and other published works, and photographs of their art. Most of these artists perished during the Second World War.

Five student notebooks of Benson Jones Palmer and Elgin Burpe Palmer from the University College School of Agriculture, 1869-1872; one farming contract book 1871-1897, and inserts.

Fonds consists of materials accumulated by Dr. Laurent and Mrs. Colette Potvin involving the Papal Commission on Population and Birth Control. The records cover the time period 1964 to 1966. The records consist of preliminary papers and drafts, research and reference material, studies and reports pertaining to the Commission that were sent to the Potvins, correspondence with Commission members and representatives of the Church, as well as reports presented by and to members during Commission sessions.
