Personal records of James Barron, student of Forestry at the University of Toronto in the 1930s. The records comprising this fonds consist of two accessions: B2002-0011 and B2003-0007. The majority of the records document his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and include mainly correspondence, some typescripts of speeches and articles, clippings, awards, and photographs. There are no administrative records and no teaching or research materials relating to his chief area of interest, organic chemistry.

Most of the records in this fonds document Harris' research in the history of Higher Education, a subject on which he published widely and gave numerous addresses. Some limited documentation provides researchers with some information on his contributions to several administrative posts. There are also early lecture files on English literature which document his early teaching career and some files relating to the researching and writing of the university history although most of those records are in the records of the University Historian. Finally there are original university records collected by Harris regarding the University of Toronto Faculty Association and its predecessors.

B1991-0003: Personal files, correspondence, addresses, publications, lecture notes, patient files and photographs documenting Dr. Farquharson's career in the Faculty of Medicine and as a member of the National Research Council and the Toronto Regional Subcommittee on Shock and Blood Substitutes (1942-1944). B2012-0008: Records belonging to Dr. Ray Farquharson (1897-1965) document professional trips, meetings and awards. Included is correspondence, notes, agenda and memorabilia. Also included in this donation are records relating to Dr. Ray Farquharson collected by colleagues James Dauphinee and Bob Kerr and passed to the Farquharson family. Finally, there are a set of early letters belonging to Dr. Farquharson’s uncle, University of Toronto alumnus, Dr. Edgar Nesbitt Coutts (M.B. 1900). The letters mainly cover his time as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the First World War and afterwards in a Swiss sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis. The fonds consists of Bell's records pertaining to his activities as an academic, book collector and to his personal life. The fonds includes correspondence, academic and professional records, including Bell's university degrees and diploma's, his thesis, essays, (lecture) notes, and offprints and manuscripts of articles. Personal files include photographs, memorabilia, a diary, three volumes of Latin poetry, and correspondence between Pelham Edgar and Charles G.D. Roberts (potentially purchased by Bell). The fonds also includes personal material, including articles about Bell, correspondence about a portrait of Bell, a memorial address and obituary.

The fonds also contains the catalogue of his book collection, and lists of books.

B1979-1029: Transcripts of two interviews, June 29 and July 29, 1971 with Professor C.C. Gotlieb, conducted by Henry S. Tropp. This was part of an early history project relating to computers undertaken on behalf of the Smithsonian Institute. These transcripts are of the edited version. (1 file, 1971)

B1998-0069: Consists of correspondence, lecture notes, minutes, reports, conference and editorial files, as well as subject files relating Professor Gotlieb's involvement in FERUT, UTEC, Computation Centre, Department of Computer Science, Institute of Computer Science, Library automation, University, national and international committees and organizations, early computer courses, and computer journals. (23 boxes, 1947-1987)

B1994-0022: Correspondence, surveys, drafts of reports, reports, minutes, notices and addresses relating, in particular, to computer committees at the University of Toronto focussing on large-scale computation; to Professor Gotlieb's activities as colloquium coordinator in the Department of Computer Science (ca.1984-1994); and to the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology. B2002-0003: Records in this accession document various aspects of Prof. Gotlieb’s career as a leading computer scientist. Most notably early correspondence, association files, publication files and research files document Gotlieb’s early work and contributions. These along with records relating to his role as a teacher shed light on the early development of computer technology in Canada, the emergence of computer scientists as a profession and their subject expertise as a discipline of academic study. This accession also contains records relating to Gotlieb’s wider social advocacy demonstrated in his involvement in Science for Peace and several Jewish groups. Finally, this accession has several photographs of early computer installations at the University depicting technology that was unique to the world at that time. Included are images of the experimental computer UTEC as well at the FERUT (Ferranti Electronic computer) - the first electronic computer to be purchased anywhere (1952). (23 boxes, 1942-2001)

B1986-0014: Copy of W.S. Wallace's "A History of the University of Toronto, 1827-1927", annotated by Irving Heward Cameron, who recorded additional sources and provided commentary and personal reminiscences. (1 box, 1927)

Personal records of Howard D. Chapman, architect and former University of Toronto student, consisting of course notes in architecture (1934-1938) and a course of lectures in architecture (1944); professional files relating to plannnig and construction at the University of Toronto, including the Master Plan Framework for the University of Toronto Campus (1967), photographs of the construction of the Superintendent's Building (1959), sketches and a feasibility study for the Men's Athletic Facilities (1969), a feasibility study for the Faculty Club (1969), a report on the Koffler Student Services Centre, with fees and invoices (1983-1985). Also included: a report and site plan for Innis College by Massey and Flanders Architects (1967-1968), and a site plan for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Library (1968), the Architectural Alumni newsletter and a booklet on Knox College.

This fonds contains the personal papers of Prof. Fritz Moritz Heichelheim, mainly while professor of classics at the University of Toronto (1948-1968) and in academic positions at Universities in Britain such as Cambridge and Nottingham University.

The largest series (Series 1) contains correspondence spanning 46 years received from friends, family and colleagues living in North America as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Correspondence is in mostly English and German depending on the language of the writer. Some of Prof. Heichelheim’s outgoing replies will be found scrawled on the back of the incoming letter or as a separate documents. The completeness of this series documents Prof. Heichelheim’s wide interest in classical studies, numismatics and papyri translation. Other series document some of his teaching and research activities, mainly at universities in England as well as his literary works on Roman and Greek history also in both English and German. No manuscripts for his major books such as his published thesis in the 1930’s or his collaborative works such as A history of the Roman people (1962) with C. A. Yeo have been found.

His extensive work in numismatics however will be found in Series 5. This series contains the manuscript and photographs for his catalogue Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Vol. IV of the General and Leake Collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge produced mainly during the late 1930’s to the 1950s. Records in this series provide some documentation on the joint project of University of Toronto and Heichelheim’s previous employer, the University of Giessen in Germany. This project directed by Prof. Heichelheim during the 1950s dealt with the translation and publication of the Giessen papyrus and ostraka (handwriting on pottery).

This accession documents Mr. Clement's student activities as an undergraduate at University College and as a law student at the Faculty of Law. Series 1 to 3 document his involvement with University College student organizations and contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, flyers, draft articles, financial statements, and subject files documenting his role as a student representative and member of various committees and President (1981-1982) of the University College Literary and Athletic Society (the students' administrative council for University College). His post-graduation participation as a member of the executive of the University College Alumni Association is also included.

Series 4 and 5 are closely related to the previous series, in that they document his role on various University of Toronto administrative bodies mainly as a representative from University College and as an alumnus. Included as well are files relating to other campus groups such as U. of T. Progressive Conservatives Association, and Lawyers for Fundamental Freedoms. Series VI contains student course materials from his undergraduate and law degree years such as term papers, course outlines, lecture notes and exams.

Graded essay, publications consisting of conference material relating to the International Federation of University Women, admit to lecture card, issues of "Old Lit"; and photographs of U of T Graduating Class in Arts and the University College Executive.

Personal records of Frederick Beamish, an analytical chemist and specialist in gold and platinum and Professor of Chemistry, consisting of general correspondence (1960-1969); his address on receiving an honorary degree from McMaster University (1962); correspondence relating to the publication of the first edition (1966) of his book, "Analytical Chemistry of Noble Metals" (1960-1971); correspondence regarding and reviews of the second edition (1971) of his book, titled "Recent Advances in the Analytical Chemistry of Noble Metals" (1968-1972); his obituary of John Bright Ferguson.

These are a fairly complete set of records documenting most aspects of Prof. Conacher’s career as a Canadian academic, a scholar of British history, a university administrator, and a teacher. There is a voluminous amount of professional correspondence found not only in Series 1 Professional Correspondence but in most other series. Much of it documents his professional and personal relationships with colleagues and friends. Records in Series 8 Professional Activities also give evidence to these relationships as it pertains to activities on associations. Researchers wishing insight into the network of Canadian historians active in Canada from the 1950s to the 1980s will want to consult these records and in particular Series 1 and Series 8. Conacher’s non-academic life is best documented in Series 2 Family Correspondence and Series 12 Non-Professional Activities but again personal correspondence with family and friends is interfiled in Series 1 and discusses life in general for himself and his family.

While manuscripts of his major published works have not survived, (except for his final work Britain and the Crimea), other documents such as correspondence with publishers, contracts, reviews and corrections to drafts give a good sense of his work on these publications. As a whole, his research, writing and editorial works are well documented in Series 4 Books as well as records in Series 5 Talks, addresses and articles, Series 6 Reviews, and Series 7 Disraeli Project. His editorial role with the Canadian Historical Review is documented in Series 8 Professional Activities, while his editorial files for the Champlain Society have been transferred to the Champlain Society Papers (Ms 50) held by the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library.

A quick look at Conacher’s c.v. reveals the numerous administrative posts he held in his more than forty years at the University of Toronto. His career covers a period in the University of Toronto that saw unprecedented expansion, changes in University governance, movements by both faculty and students to have a greater say in decision making and the beginning of budgetary constraints on University and external research funding. Within the Department of History, curriculum was rewritten several times, new disciplines were being established and the graduate department further defined. Records found in Series 9 University of Toronto, Series 10 Department of History, and Series 11 University of Toronto Faculty Association document to varying degrees all of these developments. A copy of Conacher’s unpublished memoirs found in Series 5: Talks, addresses and articles lends a very personal voice to these developments.

Conacher’s role as a teacher to his students, as well as a mentor to his graduate students and younger colleagues are reflected in the records found in Series 3 Letters of Recommendation, Series 13 Teaching and Series 14 Ph.D. Student Files. The fact that so many sought his help and advice is evidence of his influence with a whole generation of historical scholars. Much of the correspondence in Series 3 and 14 shows his personal relationships with those he mentored.

The collection consists of material relating to Canadian theatre history and to Gardner's acting and directing career. It includes theatre programmes, articles and press clippings concerning the history of theatre in Canada, especially for the Toronto area (1974 to 1999); audio tapes of Association for Canadian Theatre Research conferences; videotapes of ten television productions directed by him, and more than fifty production photographs; tapes of his television and film performances; scrapbooks (1935-1955), that document his career on stage (Hart House Theatre, Straw Hat Players, Crest Theatre, New Play Society, Jupiter Theatre, Stratford Festival) and in radio and television; other papers and photographs; other directors' prompt books; diaries; correspondence; playbills and broadsides. John Holden's collection of 19th and 20th century playscripts as well as Holden's production scripts for Canadian theatres, mainly in the 1950s and early 1960s, are also in the collection.

Four architectural drawings by James Balfour (1854-1917) who practised as an architect in Hamilton from 1876 to 1905. The drawings were executed for George A. Grover of Hamilton. One plan is dated 1883. The others are undated. Two receipts, dated 1884, are also included.

This fonds was acquired in three separate accessions in 1986, 1987, and 1989. The fonds includes a collection of taped interviews and transcripts for a commemorative radio biography on the centenary of Albert Einstein’s birth (made between 1978 and 1979); two radio documentary programs, “Space Exploration” and “Eyes in the Sky” made between 1983 and 1985; and a two-part radio series for CBC’s Ideas, “Reflections in the Mind of the Machine” on the early history of artificial intelligence, made in 1987.

The 1986 Accession includes records related to the Albert Einstein commemoration. The accession includes 94 reel to reel audio tapes and 17 magnetic audio tapes containing relevant interviews, and one box containing typed transcripts for some of the interviews, and related textual materials.

The 1987 Accession is divided into 2 series based on subject matter. These are: ‘Space Exploration: The Dream and the Reality’, and ‘Eyes in the Sky’.

The First series, ‘Space Exploration: The Dream and the Reality’, includes 45 magnetic audio tapes and one magnetic audio reel to reel tape containing relevant interviews, and one box containing typed transcripts and notes on the interviews.

The Second series, ‘Eyes in the Sky’, includes 33 magnetic audio tapes and two magnetic audio reel to reel tapes containing relevant interviews, and one box containing typed transcripts and notes on the interviews.

The 1989 Accession includes records documenting the early history of artificial intelligence used in the preparation of the two-part CBC radio series ‘Reflections in the Mind of the Machine’. The accession includes 41 magnetic audio tapes containing relevant interviews, and one box containing descriptive notes and transcripts, and summaries of interviews with biographical notes about interviewees for all the interviews contained within the fonds.
