She writes that it has been a while since they had contact, but she heard from a mutual friend, Jeanne Vergroesen, that Nouwen's birthday was in January. The rest of the letter is in Dutch.

Letter from Mich and Mary Zeman

File consists of one letter from Mich and Mary Zeman, expressing appreciation for a book sent to them by Nouwen. They write to Nouwen of their past year, when Mich started a new ministry with a small congregation, something he says Nouwen recommended he do, in order to live a more contemplative life. They write, "You have been true to your vision of the blessing of downward mobility." They also tell Nouwen about their children, Ben and Jobie.

Letter from Frances M. Young

File consists of one letter from Frances M. Young, writing from Birmingham in the United Kingdom, the Dean of Faculty of Arts at the University of Birmingham, writing at the request of Jean Vanier. He says that Vanier has invited Nouwen to their gatherings at Trosly, but Nouwen has been unable to attend. Young writes that after the last gathering with Vanier, they decided to put together a book after discussing "what difference it might make to the classic Christian doctrines to view them through the experience of L'Arche." Young asks if Nouwen is willing to contribute to the book.

File consists of one letter from Eleanor Woods from July 6, 1996, expressing appreciation for Nouwen's writing, especially for a letter he sent her with a copy of his book of prayers to the Sacred Heart.
File includes a copy of a long typed letter from Nouwen from June 4, 1996, writing to comfort her in her grief, as her son, Rick, and her husband, Reilly, both died within the last year. He received word about Woods' grief from a mutual friend, Rosie Tatum.

Letter from Tim E. Wood

File consists of one letter from Tim E. Wood, a pastor in Tacoma, WA, from February 26, 1996, expressing appreciation for Nouwen's writing, especially "In the Name of Jesus," "Out of Solitude," "The Wounded Healer," "Life of the Beloved," and "Creative Ministry." Wood says he wrote a song called "With Open Hands" and sent Nouwen a videocassette with a recording of the song.
File includes a short handwritten letter from Nouwen from April 24, 1996, in response to Wood's letter, thanking Wood for his videocassette.

  2. March 11, 1996, postcard from Jerusalem, Wirth tells Nouwen of his travels in Israel and Jerusalem.
  3. January 9, 1996, greeting card, Wirth expresses appreciation for a letter from Nouwen, and tells Nouwen to enjoy his sabbatical. He also tells Nouwen that he is a great inspiration to him.

Letter from Ian Wilson

File consists of one letter from Ian Wilson, writing from the Isle of Wight (England), expressing gratitude for Nouwen's writing, especially "In the Name of Jesus." He says "it inspires me to try and live the vision as best I can." He asks if the Servant Leadership School in Washington is still in existence, and if there are similar initiatives in the United Kingdom. He closes the letter with "Please say a thank you from me to Bill for being a party to bringing the book 'In the Name of Jesus' to life."

Letter from Rev. Helen Wilson

File consists of one letter from Rev. Helen Wilson. Letter includes a copy of a proposal for her dissertation for her doctorate, with the major question: "What is the theology of suffering, pain and death in the life and works of Henri Nouwen?" Wilson asks if Nouwen could refer her to where she could find Nouwen's theology regarding this subject.
She mentions that in 1993, she sent a copy of her paper titled "Model for Visitation of Long Term Care Patients" and that Nouwen gave her permission to use his concepts at that time.

File consists of two letters from Susan White. In letter from March 8, 1996, White reflects on the funeral of Adam Arnett, and her joy at having been back in the [L'Arche] community. She tells him that she is helping Joe V. [Vorstermans] and Doug McCarthy to give a retreat later in March for 0-2 year assistants.
Letter from April 3, 1996, is accompanied by an Easter card. She mentions sending Nouwen a tape with an interview of Mark Doty [tape not included with letter].

Letters from Richard Alan White

File consists of two letters from Richard Alan White. In letter from March 5, 1996, White is agreeing to see the first part of Nouwen's new diary, and that he would be glad to help Nouwen get the diary ready to be published - like he helped with "The Road to Daybreak." In letter from July 16, 1996, White thanks Nouwen for his letter from early June and a check for $1,000. He updates Nouwen on the progress of his own book, and says that he will read through Nouwen's diary notebooks for him. He gives Nouwen several questions to think about to get the diaries ready to be published, such as "What is it that I want to say? What one theme binds together the significance of the last year of my life? What did I DO?"
