One-key boxwood flute with ivory mounts : George Goulding, London

Item is a flute, made by George Goulding of London, England, with a silver square-ended D-sharp key. Its typical eighteenth-century small embouchure and finger holes produce a sweet and delicate tone. This type of flute was first seen in about 1672 on the European continent, about 1705 in England, and was in general use until 1780.

Series consists of correspondence, notes, and other records pertaining to significant special projects at the Music Library, including: correspondence, budgets, floor plan, memos establishing responsibilities and procedures, and descriptions of the library and its collections from the construction of the Edward Johnson Building (which included the Edward Johnson Music Library on the third floor); correspondence with Robert H. Blackburn, Chief Librarian at the University of Toronto (1954-1981); correspondence regarding cataloguing of music materials (1962-1970); correspondence (1966-1970) between David Esplin and Harvey Olnick regarding book selection; Pat Wardrop's music education bibliography project (1973-1974); correspondence regarding Rudolf Serkin and Adolf Busch (1976-1977); and a MARC record from 1977.

Series also includes one of the shovels used in the July 14, 1988 groundbreaking ceremony for the Faculty of Music and Law construction project, which included the Rupert E. Edwards Wing of the Edward Johnson Building. Shovel pictured in the University of Toronto Bulletin (July 25, 1988). 21 shovels were used in total with representatives from both faculties, the Ontario Premier David Peterson, benefactors, and other dignitaries.

File contains photographs, flyers, and two half-tone metal plates ("cuts"). The photographs include promotional photographs, pictures with the Oxford School, photographs of Eileen Law in operatic costumes, and photographs of performances. Most of the photographs are not dated.

Contains archival materials pertaining to French explorer Joseph de Brettes’ (1861-1934) expeditions to South America including two to Gran Chaco. Collection includes a steel cranial measuring device; a steel archaeological specimen; two offprint accounts written and illustrated by De Brettes describing his expeditions and scientific work in South America; and an offprint bibliographical outline of De Brettes’ extensive explorations in South America and elsewhere as well as his naval and army service.
Also includes album of autographs collected while in South America; 3 photographic identification cards; his personal library bookplate; an offprint poem signed and dedicated by French poet Jehan Rictus; as well as correspondence connected with his efforts as Vice-President of a Portuguese railway company, in particular dealing with a meeting with the King, including 3 manuscript telegrams sent from Lisbon September 1905 and 2 manuscript letters dated 1905.

Stephen Clarkson fonds

Personal records of Professor Stephen Clarkson, documenting his career as a political scientist, writer, teacher, and his early political career in municipal politics and with the Liberal Party of Canada and Ontario. Records in this fonds document the entirety of Clarkson's life and career. Records include biographical information (CV's, activity reports, honours), personal and professional correspondence, and files related to his early education and the writing of his Ph.D. thesis.

Series 3 to 13 consist of records documenting Clarkson's several books and his extensive research and writings over the course of his career. Joint projects and research with Christina McCall including original records by her can be found in some these series as well, specifically the research and writing of Trudeau and Our Times (Series 2) and research on Canadian Federal politics (Series 13).

Series 14 to 18, document Clarkson's teaching activities and his career within the University of Toronto's Department of Political Science.

Series 19 to 22 document his political roles within the Liberal party, his run for Toronto Mayor in 1969 and as well as his social activism.

This fonds also includes Liberal Party of Canada policy documents (1966-1976) belonging to Allen Linden that were given to Clarkson either because he took over as chair of the policy committee or collected as a primary resource for his research on the Liberal Party.

Accession B2019-0003 was an accrual acquired from his spouse Nora Clarkson following his death, and consists of files from his home office and laptop computer.

Accession B2023-0008 (1 box, 1975-2000) is an accrual of further personal records consisting of his journal and notes about his marriage to Christina McCall.

Series 1: Program environment
The first Roman Bittman and Marilyn Belec Bittman collection series is from the National Film Board (NFB) Program Environmental—a research film funded in 1974. The series consists of research notes, conceptual analysis, and the proposed working plan for other films to be produced by the National Film Board.
Series 2: Anglosea Guides
The second series consists of documents used in research and support of the documentary Anglosea. The files include research notes and other supporting documents. Records include the Anglosea Scheduling for Scriptwriting overseas (with additional written information), correspondences, schedule of visits on board Baltic and Oresund Ferries, and schedule of the Programme of Mr. Roman Bittman’s visit to the Arab Maritime Transport Academy. It also includes various business cards from the Ministry of Canada, transportation companies from Canada and international business cards (mainly Arab countries). The documents also contain guidebooks of the area and a navigation booklet for the teachers and students for the St. Lawrence seaway. The International Maritime Lecturers Association approved both manuals.
Series 3: NAAF Business – National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation
The National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF) is a charitable organization dedicated to raising funds to deliver programs that provide the tools necessary for Aboriginal peoples, especially youth, to achieve their potential. The Foundation has awarded more than $37 million in scholarships and bursaries to more than 9,800 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students nationwide. Roman Bittman produced the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation Awards show, and he also served as the organization’s interim CEO.
The series contains business cards of various government offices and businesses involved in supporting the NAAF. It includes the NAAF Five-year plan 2006-2010 as Roman Bittman’s acting CEO; it also consists of the verbatim of what he said and has comments to his plan. The series contains the planning and description of the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards. Business records includes the schedules for the Ottawa Meetings of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation with John Watson, Mark Wilgen, Dahlia Stein, Jascha Jabes, Rick Hansen, and Pat Martin MP. Email correspondence on various business proposals and Roman Bittman assuming acting CEO duties. Lastly, the series also consists of financial documents for the NAAF.
Series 4: Man Alive
The fourth series focuses on the writings of Thomas Merton. Merton was an influential American Catholic author of the twentieth century. His autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, has sold over one million copies, and he wrote over sixty other books and hundreds of poems and articles on topics ranging from spirituality to civil rights, and the nuclear arms race. The collection contains audio tapes of the interview and writings of Thomas Merton for Roman Bittman’s production, Man Alive. The tapes are titled Letter of Bernaro to Robert – Peter the Venerable letter of Defense; Race situations – St Basil Ascetical Discourse; Abelard and his Lark of Spiritual Insight; Silence and Makins signs; Poetry and Song; Chinese thought; and other tapes based on Thomas Merton travels.
Series 5: Agenda and Journals
The fifth series contains the agendas and journals that once belonged to Roman Bittman. His journals write of his personal life, but mostly his work, such as his research on Thomas Merton, his trip to Norway, sea battles in WWII and NATO. The agendas consist of meeting schedules, films he worked on, the contact information of his colleagues, and his travel and shooting schedules of various locations, such as his trip to Prince Edward Island, Miami, and Washington, DC. It also includes the agenda that belonged to Marilyn Belec, with her daily schedule and contact list of her colleagues.
Series 6: Awards
The sixth series consists of awards that Roman Bittman won during his extensive career and honoured after his death. Awards for his short films, early films and documentaries include the Screen awards, CFTA film awards, Family Life Film award, Banff International, American Film Festival and many more national and international Film Festival awards. It also includes the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, which he attended and wrote a message in the award booklet. After his death, many people in the entertainment and the Indigenous community came together to celebrate, honour, and recognize Roman Bittman’s life works. Many include speeches on his achievements, tribute letters, and people sending in letters to various awards nominating him after his death.
Series 7: Roman Files
The seventh series consists of Roman Bittman’s files for researching various films, company correspondences, and corporate financial papers. Documents consist of research and proposals for the potential work of the Pilgrimage sent by Roman Bittman when he was a part of Marilyn Belec Bittman’s company, Mobius Media Corporation. Furthermore, he spent his time at CBC News before becoming a producer of the documentary series The Nature of Things. The seventh series also includes his travel documents and souvenirs. His academic and personal documents include his personal poem and writings; his Ryerson University (now called Toronto Metropolitan University) letters and photos of Ryerson class reunion, touring Ryerson’s new Rogers Communications Centre with his old classmates.
Series 8: Family History
The eighth series focuses on the research done on Roman Bittman’s family history and lineage. Documents include Roman Bittman’s Genealogy Chart. Roman Bittman’s aunt, Sarah Norjard, researched papers he collected in 1992. Research notes contain photography of Sarah and Roman with family, articles from the Record-Gazette and his Métis card. It also includes his family connections towards the Bourassa and St. Germain families, two notable family members in their province’s history.
Series 9: NSFDC – Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation
The ninth series contains his development in the Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation (NSFDC). Documents include press releases from the NSFDC from the board of directors’ appointments and letters from various media companies such as Screen Star group and Mobius media production—project letters for the plans to build and operate the province’s first full sound stage. It also includes a discussion on Roman Bittman’s contract as he served as President of the Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation but was later dismissed in 1996 after the NSFDC board rejected his financing plans for the sound stage.
Series 10: APTN – Aboriginal Peoples Television Network
The tenth series of the fonds contains documents of Roman Bittman’s involvement in the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN). Bittman was an early advisor to the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network which was launched in 1999 as the first national Indigenous broadcaster in the world. Since then, the network has become a global leader in programming that celebrates the rich diversity of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island and beyond. The documents include the Aboriginal Broadcast Talent Directory book from the Centre for Aboriginal Media (CAM), press clippings on Roman Bittman establishing the National Aboriginal Television Network and business cards from various production companies, government cards, finance, and Hotel cards. Lastly, it includes the APTN Board of Directors/AGM Meeting and conference binder that provided investors and producers information on the APTN mission and the agenda for the APRN Teleconference meeting.
Series 11: Mobius Productions
The last series within the fonds is Roman and Marilyn Belec Bittman’s career and work in Mobius Media Productions. Marilyn Belec Bittman was president of the independent production firm, Mobius Productions, and Roman was a partner. Documents entail their correspondences on their various films and productions—government letters from the Ministry of Skills Development, Labour Canada, and other partners. Lastly, it includes corporation magazines and financial works such as Mobius Productions guide to film titles and price lists.

The Paul Saltzman Fonds spans his whole career, with many records from his most notable work. His time with the Beatles in 1968 is well represented. Multiple transparencies, artist proofs, and exhibition prints are present, including those selected by the Liverpool Airport for their art installation. There are also photos Saltzman took on his return trip to India in 2004 in preparation of his book.

There are multiple video Masters for the Danger Bay series, including Spanish, French, and Czech language masters.
A vast array of production elements are present ( ¼” audio reels, audiocassettes, Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, D2 cassettes, ¾” cassettes, VHS, HDCAM, DVDs, CDs, 16mm release prints, 16mm workprints, 16mm internegative, 16mm interpositive, 16mm optical soundtrack, 16mm magnetic soundtrack, 35mm release prints), and include productions Danger Bay, Wings, and Cold L-Z Pow. Multiple hard drives hold electronic files from Aides, Prom Night, and Last White Night.

Photographic and graphic records represent the productions Spread Your Wings, Danger Bay, and My Secret Identity. Some of these photographs are cast/crew photos, framed animation cells, and framed magazine covers.

Many of Saltzman’s awards are included in the Fonds. There are 100 framed certificate awards, 5 statuettes, 1 Emmy award for My Secret Identity, 3 medals, 9 medals in custom boxes and 2 medals encased in acrylic.

Series 1: People
The first series contains press clippings from various publications of various actors, reviews, and critics of the films—numerous articles on the Directors, musicians, producers, and writers. Press clippings are organized alphabetically by last name, from Joe Abeywicrema to Valerio Zurlini.

Series 2: AGE Series III
The A-G-E Film Society of Toronto was created in 1955 until 1962 for the purpose of “providing those who lived through the cinema’s formative years with the opportunity to relive the past, and to give the new generation of film enthusiasts a chance to see what had been accomplished in motion pictures before their interest in films began.” Within the second series, the AGE collection includes the application for membership in the AGE. It contains the AGE 2nd to AGE 6th Season programmes letter from the AGE Film Society of Toronto to various partners and film organizations. The series also includes several newspaper clippings on the AGE Society.

Series 3: Film Company Catalogues
The third series contains the documents and items from various film production companies whose titles are included in the TFS collection. Production company catalogues collected are from Canadian and international film companies. Companies included in the series are A World of Entertainment, Universal/16, Pan Canadian Film Distributors Inc, Cinematheque Ontario, Paramount, Universal Pictures and more. Many catalogues also come from the TFS Summer series and other film events hosted by TFS.

Series 4: Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Award
The Fourth series contains the textual files and objects on the Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Award. The award was named in honour of Dorothy and Oscar Burritt, who left Vancouver from the Vancouver branch of the Canadian film Society to aid in the creation of the TFS. The Burritt’s contribution to the film society movement was recognized by a special Canadian Film Award in 1963, just a few months before Dorothy’s death. The Toronto Film Society established the Dorothy Burritt Memorial Award (later renamed for Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Memorial Award), an annual cash grant to support projects that contribute “to greater understanding and enjoyment of the film as an art”. The collection includes correspondences from various film societies, such as the Vancouver branch and other film production companies. It also contains reports, Memorial Award packages, press clippings, marketing on advertising the various TFS events, and correspondence to the Burritt Memorial Award Committee.

Series 5: Toronto Film Society Administration
The Fifth series contains the documentation on the administration side of the TFS. Many of the TFS's administration documents include meeting minutes from their AGM (Annual General Meeting) and TFS Board Meeting Minutes. Such meetings include the general and board meeting minutes, documents that pertain to the international film festival and many other festivals, TFS committee report, and correspondences. The series also contains the administration for their awards, such as the Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Memorial Award and film acquisitions. TFS administration documents include their members' information, votes and questionnaires for their members. It also consists of the Eastman House, financial reports, and statements on the TFS events, such as the summer and seasons series. Lastly, include film acquisition documents of various films.

Dave and Dale Cox (Third Accrual)

This accrual consists of four series, based on a listing provided by the creator. The series are as follows:

  2. Animation Memorabilia
  3. Animation Cels and Drawings
  4. Animation Storyboards and Designs
    The first series, Animation Books and Periodicals, consists of the Coxes’ personal collection of books and magazines about the art of animation. This series also contains books and graphic novels based on Nelvana animated television programs - in particular, “Rock and Rule,” the “Franklin” series, and “Inspector Gadget.”
    The second series, Animation Memorabilia, consists of memorabilia collected by the Coxes related to animation, including commemorative programs and publications, brochures, a tote bag, “Babar” merchandise, an animation kit, original animation drawings from “The Pink Panther,” and several hand-cut, 3-D cartoon caricatures. This series also includes film reels and a DVD featuring some of Dave Coxes’ earliest animation work, from his time as a student at Sheridan College to animation shorts for “Sesame Street.”
    The third series, Animation Cels and Drawings, consists of original production animation cels and original production drawings from several Nelvana series and programs worked on by the Coxes, including “Cosmic Christmas,” “Intergalactic Thanksgiving,” “My Pet Monster,” “Ewoks,” “Rupert,” “Beetlejuice,” “Rome-0 and Julie-8,” “The Pink Panther,” and “Strawberry Shortcake.” This series also includes an animation cel from an animated Christmas card by Dave and Dale Cox.
    The fourth series, Animation Storyboards and Designs, consists of original storyboards and character designs created by Dave Cox, as well as copies of storyboards. Highlights include storyboards for “The New Quiz Kids,” for VideoArt Productions, as well as storyboards for several animated commercial and public service announcements. Finally, the series also includes storyboards, story ideas, and concept sketches for animated shorts and series by Dave Cox.

Dave and Dale Cox (First Accrual)

This accrual contains a large selection of animation cels, toys and memorabilia relating to the cartoons the pair worked on, and conference programs they attended. As the two were also collectors of animation, it is somewhat unclear which cels were drawn by Dale or Dave, and which were purchased later on. There are notes and tips on animation, created by Dave when he worked at Nelvana, and are very detailed in describing the animation methods they used, and how to best reuse cels in future scenes. The production best represented in this accrual is the pair’s 1982 animated Christmas Card, which includes animation sketches, flip books, timing notes, and correspondence regarding the reception of the cartoon, and contracts to air the short on television. Another well represented program is Inspector Gadget, as there are notes from Dave’s time in Japan working on the program, and lots of memorabilia. There are also many cels and animation drawings from the program Ewoks.

Arrangement:
Series have been arranged to reflect the different stages in Dale and Dave Cox’s lives. Larger series with clear division of work have been further divided into sub-series.
Series 1: Independent and Early Work (1968-2015)
The first series represent the work Dale and Dave did while at Sheridan and content they created for personal use and enjoyment. Freelance work or material that was not clearly tied to another series has also been placed here.
Series 2: VideoArt Productions (1972-2018)
The second series contains programs that were created by VideoArt Productions. As the company was young and small when Dave began there, it can be assumed he worked on all the material included in this series. This was the first animation company Dave worked for, and thus the work included is all from the early stages in his career.
Series 3: Nelvana (1978-2017)
The third series has been further arranged into subseries due to the large amount of material relating to it. Nelvana is a Canadian animation studio that both Dave and Dale worked for, and have played a large part in growing their careers. Nelvana has animated many popular and award winning programs, many of which are represented in this accrual. Due to the volume of material, and the breadth of programs, the series is divided into sub-series, organized by program, the advertisement branch of Nelvana, Spotted Bear, and company files. Much of the ephemera is within this series, as are the animation cels. Production notes are also included in some subseries. Not all of the material included in this series was directly worked on by the Coxs, but may have been acquired later for their personal collection.
Series 4: Animation Magazines and Conference Material (1975-2004)
The fourth series contains more secondary material. The pair attended many international as well Canadian professional animation conferences. Often their attendance was not only for yearly professional learning, but they had also been recognized for their contribution to the art and were being awarded in some manner. Because many of the shorts they worked on were the reasons they attended, those conference material that feature these programs, Christmas Card for example, have been organized into another series. Instead, this series “Animation Magazines and Conference Material” contains conference programs and magazines that do not feature either Dave or Dale. This series is quite useful in capturing how the animation industry both in Canada and abroad has changed, as the program books and magazines were meant for professionals in the field and cover a large breadth of time.
Series 5: Collectables and Other Material Related to Animation ([1966]-2004)
The last series contains material that are clearly items Dave and Dale collected over the years that relate to animation. This includes educational VHS tapes that cover the history of animation across the world, cels from programs that are outside of the scope of any of the other series listed, and other general animation memorabilia.

Netting shuttles

Shuttles used to fix fishing nets. Used by David Murakami when he worked as a fisherman and Captain. Two are plastic, and the smaller is made of wood and still has some thread wound around it.

Other activities

The records in this series underscore the impact of an upbringing where the tenets of Christianity, public service, and duty were emphasized. They begin with thirty years (1937 – 1969) of files on Camp Kagawong, a privately owned boy’s camp on Balsam Lake, where Dr. Hastings spent his summers as a young boy enjoying the outdoors. The leadership qualities he displayed led to his becoming a camp counsellor (1944 – 1945) and, from 1946 – 1950, director of the Bantam Section and instructor in nature, first aid, swimming and games. During those years he dramatized three folk tales for presentation. At the weekly chapel services, he often delivered homilies or ‘sermonettes’, a practice he continued throughout his association with the camp until a few years before it closed in 1975. He served as camp doctor for a number of his vacations between 1952 and 1967. Dr. Hastings’ activities at Camp Kagawong are well documented through notes, certificates, correspondence (much of which is in Series 3) scripts for theatrical presentations, chapel service programs and sermonettes, and some of the annual camp catalogues, photographs and artifacts. The arrangement of the files in this section is largely chronological.

The material on Camp Kagawong is followed by files on Canadian Council of Churches and its Vellore/Ludhiana Committee, of which Dr. Hastings was a member from 1962 – 1975 and to which he was an advisor from 1975 to 1981. These are followed by files on the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, including extensive ones documenting the work of the International Review Team, of which he was a member, that visited Vellore in 1979 and produced a report on its findings the following year. His wife and daughter accompanied him on this trip.

Next are files on the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953; the Developing Countries Farm Radio Network, of which Dr. Hastings was a member of the board; Emmanuel College, where he was a University representative on its council and a member of its curriculum committee; the King’s College Fund which in 1985 organized a Canadian study tour of health services in Britain and, in the same period reciprocal study tours in Canada, based on the Department of Health Administration at the University of Toronto. (Dr. Hastings and his family lived at the King’s Fund College during several visits in London.) He was active in the youth clubs of the Progressive Conservative Party in the 1940s, attended the 1948 convention at which George Drew was selected leader, and took part in the federal election the following year.

Dr. Hastings’ place of worship for many years has been St. Andrew’s United Church at 117 Bloor Street East in Toronto. He played a very active role in its affairs, serving on its Session and Official Board since 1956, many of its committees, was a member of its Men’s Club and, on occasion, delivered the sermon of the week. The files cover the years from 1952 to 1973, when St. Andrew’s and the Yonge Street United Church amalgamated, and include correspondence, notices of services, minutes of meetings, reports, and drafts of three sermons.

This series ends with a number of files on Dr. Hastings’ involvement in several activities of the United Church of Canada, centering around his being a member of its task force on health services (1985 – 1987) and its Division of Mission in Canada’s health task group (1991 – 1994). Included are correspondence, minutes, memoranda, notes, drafts of reports, and a video, “Taking the pulse of Canadian health care” that grew out of the work of the health task group.

John Hastings began his education at the Normal Model School in Toronto in 1933, went on to the University of Toronto Schools in 1939, and from there into the pre-medicine program at the University of Toronto in 1945. He received his MD in 1951, then did post-graduate work in the School of Hygiene, receiving his Diploma in Public Health (DPH) in 1954. Missing from this series are files relating to his specialty qualification of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health (FRCP(C)) and the Diploma in International Health Planning (DIHP) from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.

This series documents Hastings’ progress through the educational system and the development of his academic and non-curricular activities. The files on the Normal Model School contain certificates, class assignments, press clippings, drafts of two plays that Hastings wrote, and the school badge. Hastings’ interests in drama were carried over to the University of Toronto Schools, where he wrote a number of plays, drafts of which have survived in this series, and one of which was published in its yearbook, the Twig, in 1943. At UTS, he also honed his public speaking and debating skills; the predominant themes of his public addresses being democracy, the British Empire and World War II. Hastings was a reporter to the Twig for his form and editor in 1943 – 1944 (his editorial files have survived). He was also a member of the school band and the cadets, developed an early interest in politics and became an active member of the Young Progressive Conservatives for a number of years. At the same time he maintained a high academic standing.

In 1944 Hastings entered a worldwide essay competition sponsored by the Royal Empire Society. His entry was one of three to receive a prize. This encouraged him to enter other essay contests while a pre-medical student at the University of Toronto (1945 – 1947). As an undergraduate at the U of T, he was a member of the Hart House Debates Committee from 1949 to 1951 and served as its secretary for two years; his detailed notes reveal something of the parry and thrust of debating at that time. Among other activities, Hastings was a student member of the Board of Stewards of Hart House and the U of T Historical Club. In 1948 he participated in the Mock Parliament, attended by then Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. The remainder of this series contains notes, correspondence, certificates, and photographs relating to Hastings’ acquisition of his medical degree and his post-graduate diploma in public health.

Records of two generations of the Hastings family, relating primarily to Elgin Rowland and Mary Ferguson Hastings and their son, John Elgin Ferguson Hastings. Included are course notes and laboratory notes, certificates and photographs documenting Elgin Hastings’ years (1908 – 1913) as a medical student at the University of Toronto, and correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to his wife’s life and activities. Most of the records document the activities of John Hastings as a student, especially the University of Toronto Schools and medicine (1945 – 1954) at the University of Toronto; his career as a professor of and administrator in public health administration at the University of Toronto (1956 – 1993), and as an advisor and consultant on community and public health issues from the local to international levels. The correspondence includes many letters from contacts in India, Japan, and elsewhere internationally; there are also research materials, manuscripts of articles, books and addresses, conference files; studies, including the Royal Commission on Health Services, the Community Health Centre project, the Sault Ste. Marie study and the Canadian Caribbean Health Initiative; and files on his involvement with Canadian Council of Churches projects and with the United Church of Canada. This fonds documents the administrative and teaching duties of Robert Spencer, as a Professor Emeritus of History and a specialist in European history, especially German history in the 19th and 20th centuries. They also document his education and his participation in World War II; his extensive international research, publications and speaking engagements; as well as his involvement with professional associations and organizations such as the University of Toronto Contingent, Canadian Officers Training Corps (COTC), the International Studies Programme and the Graduate Centre for International Studies, Altantik-Brücke, and the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE). Included is personal correspondence, correspondence with international organizations, government departments, embassies and consulates; lecture notes; manuscripts and addresses.

Also present are two sous-fonds. The first is the personal papers of his wife, Ruth Margaret Church Spencer, who served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) during World War II as a base librarian and afterwards as the first professional librarian at Canada House in London. The second consists of files compiled by Ralph Flenley, a specialist in German history and sometime chair of the Department of History: examination questions, student mark books, and drafts of an unpublished manuscript on Anglo-German relations.

Personal and biographical

This series contains material relating to Professor Spencer’s birth, childhood and later birthdays; childhood stories, plays, and poems; reunions and other post-graduate activities at McGill University and the University of Oxford; honours received; and files relating to the residences that he had owned. Also present are copies of his curriculum vitae, security documents regarding the Department of External Affairs, and material reflecting his long association with the Canadian military in the form of Remembrance Day ceremonies and VE-Day and other celebrations related to World War II.

Travel

This series documents Professor Spencer’s travels, both for pleasure and for academic and other professional purposes. The first of his trips documented here is to New York City in 1946; the last is to Europe in 2011.

The files contain an assortment of flight information, correspondence, itineraries, invitations, notes, postcards, diaries and reports (indicated below where they exist), programmes for a wide variety of events, menus, tickets, passenger lists, booklets, maps, photographs, press clippings, and other memorabilia. The arrangement is chronological by trip. Beginning in April, 1977 and continuing while he was director until his retirement in 1986, a lot of Professor Spencer’s travel was done as an extension of the work of the Centre for International Studies. For the first of these trips, he wrote a detailed report of his activities. The often extensive correspondence in these files ranges from that with Canadian government, consular, and military officials to military officials at NATO and elsewhere in Europe and England, to academic and government personnel in Western Europe. Included are files on Professor Spencer’s involvement with the Atlantic Council of Canada, the Committee on Atlantic Studies, and the Canadian Studies Association.

Some of the folders in this series contain correspondence, postcards, reports, and other items that are well outside the dates of the activities being described.

The photoprints, postcards, and artifacts (pin buttons) have been retained in the relevant files. Files containing receipts only (such as transportation, car rentals, luggage, and accommodation) were not kept and the retention of such material in other files is selective. Fax paper, where present, has been photocopied and the original faxes, most of which had deteriorated badly, have been destroyed.

University of Toronto Blues men's baseball team

This series documents Professor Lang’s years of service to the University of Toronto Blues Men’s Baseball team which he coached from 1994 to 2011. The files contain information on team lists, coaches, financing and fundraising, equipment, rosters and players, and statistical records. There is also some press coverage. There is documentation of tournaments in Columbus, Ohio (1998) and Durham College in Oshawa (1999). Photographs and digital images document the team from 1999-2007, including many images and graphics used to boost the website for the team Also included is an Ontario University Athletics medal for 2001.

Digital files in B2018-0001 include email correspondence with players, university officials, and sponsors; rosters and team photographs; and files related to the construction of a new baseball diamond on the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, which opened in 2006. In 2011, it was renamed the “Dan Lang field” in honour of his many years of service to the Varsity Blues baseball program.
