Fonds consists of the following series: Student records, 1928-1931; Diaries and journals, 1924-1989; Writing, 1937-1992; Tributes/memorabilia, 1927-2004; and Memoirs, [ca. 1983] - [ca. 1988]. In addition, there is one class stick.

The fonds deals with records relating to St Hilda's College from its founding until 2004. Most of them are from the office of the head of St Hilda's College (whose title changed over the years from Lady Principal to Principal and Dean of Women to Dean of Women and Dean of St Hilda's. Records include correspondence, student records, committee minutes, reports and statistics, photographs, policies, budgets and other administrative records. Note that there are no documents for the period 1953-1978 when Katharine Darroch was in office.

This series documents Dr. Moldofsky’s research activities, in particular, his two major research projects on Microgravity, Sleep and Immune Functions in Humans (SWIF) with the Canadian Space Agency and NASA, funded through the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The first project (1995-1999) studied the influence of gravity change on sleep and the immune system in astronauts. The aim of this research was to further advance the studies of disordered sleep and altered immune functions observed in distressing circumstances, and in patients with psychiatric (major depression) and medical conditions (i.e. fibromyalgia, post febrile chronic fatigue syndrome). This experiment was conducted during the Mir 23/NASA 4 and Mir 24 missions in 1997-1998.

The second project of the same title (2000-2003) involved experiments carried out in space but then subsequently lost during the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. This second phase aimed to understand bone loss in astronauts in space as well as osteoporosis on Earth, believing that chemical changes in the human immune system – possibly triggered by sleep deprivation – could instead be a major cause of bone loss in space and on the ground (as opposed to just microgravity).

Included in this series: grant applications; correspondence; files related to visits to the Russian Space Agency in Star City and the Johnson Space Center in Houston (including photographs); baseline data collection (BDC) data sets; and final reports. Also included are EEG electrode caps used by American and Russian astronauts aboard the MIR space station.

One video documents President Prichard's address at Spring Reunion on June 3, 2000. A CD containing photographs and a web presentation document the dedication of the Roy Oglesby Room at 21 King's College Circle. Two CDs document the University of Toronto 175th Banners. They contain portraits (Tif files) as well as images of each banner (PDF files). There are 136 people, mainly famous or accomplished alumni and faculty.

This fonds is divided into two series: ‘Textual Material’ and ‘Audiovisual Material’.
The first series, ‘Textual Material’, consists of nine subseries. ‘Press and Publicity’ consists primarily of published articles, profiles and reviews of the band between 1980 and 2003. ‘Correspondence’ consists of communications between members of the band and their management, and between management and record companies/promoters; this subseries contains numerous letters from celebrities, and spans the period between 1985 and 2001. ‘Legal’ consists of incorporation documents, contracts, and litigation; this subseries dates from 1984 to 2000. ‘Accounting’ consists of financial statements, royalty statements, invoices and receipts; this subseries dates from 1982 to 2000. ‘Creative’ consists of lyric sheets, poetry, string charts, scrapbooks, sheet music, and artwork; this subseries dates from 1975 to 1999. ‘Memorabilia’ consists of t-shirts, bandanas, displays, promotional postcards, and other items; this subseries dates from 1986 to 2002. ‘Posters’ consists of 67 posters advertising the band and particular concerts and recordings; this subseries dates from 1987 to 2002. ‘Photographs’ consists of photographs of the band and people associated with them; this subseries dates from 1981 to 2002. ‘Miscellaneous’ consists of 40 awards; this subseries dates from 1981 to 2002.
The second series, ‘Audiovisual Material’, consists of two subseries. ‘Audio Recordings’ consists of released and unreleased studio recordings and released and unreleased live recordings (including rough mixes, alternate takes and outtakes); this subseries dates from 1973 to 2003. ‘Video Recordings’ consists of footage of live concerts, interviews, award shows, EPKs (electronic press kids), videos, television advertisements and a documentary film about one of the band’s tours. This fonds consists of one accession containing the personal records of Margaret Allemang, Muriel Ward, Jean Wilson, Patricia S.B. Stanojevic, Catherine McNaughton, Ethel Irwin, Mary Potts, Muriel Uprichard and Delta and Irene Mick. These records were donated to the Margaret M. Allemang Centre for the History of Nursing Archives by the women themselves or their family members. The records cover a variety of topics relating to the history of nursing such as their own involvement as staff members in the School of Nursing at the University of Toronto, the development of nursing curricula, nurses involvement in World War II, and the study of cardiac patients. The fonds includes correspondence, photographs, research data, oral history interviews, audiocassettes, nurse’s pins and published manuscripts.

Collection includes extensive correspondence with friends, family, fans, editors and publishers; drafts of manuscripts and notes for Passing Ceremony, Basic Black with Pearls, A View From the Roof, Bridge of Sighs, A Classical Education (including Dave Carleys scripts for theatre) and other short stories and pieces, such as The Zurich Years: a memoir of my mother, also My Mothers Luck; haiku; Zen Buddhism material; lectures; reviews; appearances; extensive typed and holograph personal journal, 1958-2000s, including from various travels (China, Japan, Europe, Indonesia, Mexico, Cuba, Canada and the United States) and at home; photographs; books; print ephemera; her typewriter and other material related to her life and work.

Consists of various administrative files including; policy statements and forms, human resources contracts, student files, budget information, student and faculty inquiries, yearly reviews and reports, program events, grant applications and general correspondence. The accession also consists of a large number of invoices and contracts. Many of the files appear to be from the desk of Derrick de Kerckhove, Director of the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology from 1983 until 2008.

This series gives an overview of Coxeter’s career and honors. It includes several files with biographical information including articles, clippings, tributes and obituaries that discuss his life and contributions to mathematics. There are also copies of his C.V.s, entries in biographical dictionaries, and his own notes on his reviews and publications.

This series also includes correspondence, certificates, diplomas and medals documenting the numerous recognitions and awards he received throughout his lengthy career. For photographs regarding awards, see Series 9: Graphic records. Finally there a few files of personal and family memorabilia as well as an autobiographical notebook in which Coxeter wrote his early recollections of his childhood, his early studies and education as well as professional biographical milestones.

Records of two generations of the Hastings family, relating primarily to Elgin Rowland and Mary Ferguson Hastings and their son, John Elgin Ferguson Hastings. Included are course notes and laboratory notes, certificates and photographs documenting Elgin Hastings’ years (1908 – 1913) as a medical student at the University of Toronto, and correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to his wife’s life and activities. Most of the records document the activities of John Hastings as a student, especially the University of Toronto Schools and medicine (1945 – 1954) at the University of Toronto; his career as a professor of and administrator in public health administration at the University of Toronto (1956 – 1993), and as an advisor and consultant on community and public health issues from the local to international levels. The correspondence includes many letters from contacts in India, Japan, and elsewhere internationally; there are also research materials, manuscripts of articles, books and addresses, conference files; studies, including the Royal Commission on Health Services, the Community Health Centre project, the Sault Ste. Marie study and the Canadian Caribbean Health Initiative; and files on his involvement with Canadian Council of Churches projects and with the United Church of Canada. Included are photographs, an audiotape, two videos, and a number of artifacts.

This fonds is divided into 4 series: ‘NOW Communications Inc.’, ‘NOW Magazine Photo Archive’, ‘The ‘Photo’ Series’, ‘NOW Magazine Audiovisual’.

The first series, ‘NOW Communications Inc.’, consists mainly of textual material relating to the production of the magazine. It is divided into 14 sections: ‘Administration’, ‘Advertising’, ‘Contracts’, ‘Awards’, ‘Circulation’, ‘Correspondence’, ‘Ephemera’, ‘Financial’, ‘Legal’, ‘Photography’, ‘Posters’, ‘Printing Subcontracts’, ‘Promotional’, ‘Publicity’, and ‘Research’. This series also includes 39 bound volumes of NOW Magazine (a complete run dating from Summer 1981 to August 2001).

The second series, ‘NOW Magazine Photo Archive’ consists of several thousand photographs related to the production of NOW Magazine (Vols. 1- 9). These photos document current events, personalities, buildings and businesses, streetscapes, conventions, demonstrations and rallies, theatre rehearsals and performances, film production stills, promotional portraits, and advertising and product shots used for advertising/illustrations/cover shots. This also includes 23 pieces of original artwork.

The third series, ‘The Photo Series’, consists of several thousand photographs related to the production of NOW Magazine (Vols. 10 - 13).
The photographs feature the same subject matter as those in the second series.

The fourth series, ‘NOW Magazine Audiovisual’, consists of audio and video items including production meetings, speeches, radio advertisements, interviews with Michael Hollet and Alice Klein, interviews with celebrities conducted by Michael Hollett, seminars, music compilations, and radio and television profiles of NOW Magazine.

Banners (5) produced by the University to commemorate the 175th Anniversary. Banners were displayed on street polls along high traffic areas of the Greater Toronto Area. Each banner contains image of an individual graduate: Margaret Atwood, Peter Gzowski, J. Robert Prichard, Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Deborah McGregor. Also includes accompanying brochure with biographies of alumni.

Series A, University of Toronto Governing Council, covers the years 1963 through 2002. The Governing Council is the highest governing body of the University of Toronto. In 1963, the Governing Council drafted A Provisional Plan for Two Off-Campus Colleges in the University of Toronto, which established Scarborough College (later UTSC) and also Erindale College (later the University of Toronto Mississauga, or UTM). The series includes correspondence and address lists for various council members, by-laws for the council, and council minutes from 1973 to 2002. Also included are documents relating to the opening of the College in 1964 for extension courses and the formal opening in 1966. Materials regarding the design and construction of the College, including architectural drawings, are included as well, since the Governing Council oversaw the construction of the initial buildings.

Records in this accession relate to several series established in B1997-0010, and include personal correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, notebooks and scrapbooks. Also includes many diplomas and honours, artifacts, slides and photographs. Of particular note is documentation relating to J.M. Ham's trip to India as a representative to the World University Services in 1953 as well as personal correspondence with family while a student at MIT in 1946-47.

Sous-fonds I: Skilling family. The emphasis is on William Watt, a shoemaker who emigrated from England to Canada in 1907; on Ernest, who was a very active member of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; on Donald, who was killed in action during World War I, and on his brother, William, who was wounded but survived.

Sous-fonds II: Sara (Sally) Bright Skilling. The records focus on Sally’s education in the United States, her travels with Gordon in Eastern Europe in the 1960s, and on her love of entertaining. They document the crucial support, intellectual and otherwise, that she provided to Gordon as he pursued his career.

Sous-fonds III: Harold Gordon Skilling. The documentation here is primarily on Gordon’s education and early career and his later years as an expert on Russian and East European politics and on Czechoslovakia, in particular. An extensive combination of correspondence, journals, lectures, writings and photographs reveal much about Skilling’s ideas and his relationships with the principal figures in recent Czech history.

Records consist of few pieces of personal correspondence mainly to Mary Ham related to the death of James Ham, mementos and one sound recording of the commemoration service for E.J. Pratt. Also includes to files on donations to scholarship funds made in Ham's
memory.

This sous-fonds documents the life and career of Gordon Skilling, especially his family, his formative years as a student, and his later years as an internationally recognized expert on Russia, Eastern Europe and, especially, Czechoslovakia. Researchers seeking to fill the obvious gaps in this accession should refer to the earlier accessions in the Skilling fonds in the University Archives that were donated by Professor Skilling over a period of almost two decades, beginning in 1983.

Accession consists of monographs, booklets, pamphlets and photographs about Kabayama’s family and work with the Earth Spirit Festival.

Personal records of Francess Halpenny, documenting her activities as a student, with the RCAF during World War II, with amateur theatre groups, as a professor of library science, as an editor with the U of T Press and the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and with numerous academic and professional groups, including the Royal Society of Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the National Library. Included are some drafts of her books, articles, addresses, and reports; her honorary degrees and other awards (including photos and a video), other photos, and a (RSC) medal.

This fonds consists of records about the life and career of Clifton Gardner as an Anglican priest in England and Canada as well as his time as Chaplain in the Royal Navy. The fonds includes some published and unpublished works authored by Gardner, his sermon notebooks, and a diary.

This series contains the original film elements for several films made by Kay Armatage.
There are also files documenting this facet of her career including correspondence, film proposals, research notes, clippings, grant applications, budget reports, shot lists and scripts. Several files document her films Striptease, Storytelling and Artist on Fire, as well as Prof. Armatage’s attempt at writing and directing a film about Nell Shipman which did not go beyond development.

Photographs in this series include shots taken during the production of several of her films. There is one file documenting the filming of Storytelling which includes shots of Northrop Frye in New York City. There are also three contact sheets by Babette Mangolte taken during the making of Artist on Fire, with views of Joyce Weiland’s Toronto studio and home. The series also contains one file of printing plates used in the creation of publicity material for Prof. Armatage’s early film Jill Johnson, October 1975.

The series partially documents Francess Halpenny’s activities with the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as a meteorological observer in Torbay (Newfoundland) in 1943 and 1944, and in Summerside (Prince Edward Island) in 1945. It also partially documents her contribution to the RCAF publication, "Wings Overseas", in 1943 and 1944.

The series consists of 4 files including registration certificates, a library card, personal notes about the life at Torbay, correspondence and copies of "Wings Overseas" and "Summerside" publications. It also includes one copy of publication "Per Ardua: A pictorial History of the RCAF, Torbay 1944" ; a photograph of Halpenny’s class at the weather course for airwomen, RCAF, Toronto, Ontario, December 1942 ; Halpenny’s badges and insignia, [1943-1945] ; and a thank you note received from Theodore L. Wiacek family, after his death in 1998.

This accession contains both personal and professional records created and collected by Dr. L.E. Jones, professor of engineering. Although a small percentage of this fonds documents his personal life, the vast majority of material was created after his retirement in 1972, which he created in his capacity as Faculty Archivist and Professor Emeritus. The paucity of information from the earlier years can be attributed to the loss of many of his records during the Sir Sandford Fleming building fire in 1977.

The records have been arranged into series to reflect either the type of record or the activity involved. Records documenting Jones’ personal life are filed first, followed by papers documenting both the personal, professional and academic projects and activities that he worked on during his life. There are also special series dedicated to the archival information and records that he collected as Engineering Archivist. Photographs have been placed at the end in Series XI.

Some of the records that are included in this fonds include Professor Jones personal documents such as: his student workbooks and thesis, his letters to the editor, correspondence, and activities with his church and the Hart House Glee Club. Most of the records pertain to his professional activities and consist of documents such as: correspondence, publications, lectures and student marks. There are also a significant number of files that document his involvement in Faculty activities such as the Iron Ring Ceremony, the Hall of Distinction and the Centennial and Sesquicentennial celebrations. The work that he undertook for the Faculty providing calligraphy for the inscriptions on the awards and medals that were granted by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering are also documented in many of the files. Finally, two series are dedicated to the articles that he collected documenting the history of the Faculty as well as the archival items that he acquired as Engineering Archivist.

Despite the fact that most of the records in this fonds document Professor Jones’ personal and professional activities after his retirement, they provide an interesting glimpse into his life while assuming the role of Engineering Archivist and Professor Emeritus. As the Engineering Archivist, Jones collected a variety of rich and interesting documents pertaining to some of the early pioneers within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. In addition to collecting material, Jones also documented the Faculty by photographing notable individuals and events. This fonds would therefore be useful to those individuals interested in examining the life of Professor Jones, as well as researchers who wish to delve into the history of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

Records acquired in 2019 include drafts and notes related to the writing of his PhD thesis titled, “The undular surge in an open channel” (1941); early lecture notes and files relating to his teaching, in particular photography; further professional correspondence and memos related to his role as Engineering Archivist; additional items he collected as Engineering Archivist, in particular belonging to and/or about Prof. Louis B. Stewart and Prof. J.W. Melson; collected ephemera, artifacts, and photos about the University and the Faculty of Engineering.

The material consists of the personal records of Professor Skilling and focuses primarily of Skilling’s academic work, and includes research notes and drafts of his doctoral thesis, The German-Czech National Conflict in Bohemia, 1779-1873, as well as notes and drafts supporting the revision of this thesis, which Skilling worked on for several years. There is also some correspondence with other scholars in the field of Eastern European studies, as well as publishers and editors.

The accession also contains some of Professor Skilling’s personal belongings and awards, such as medals, honorary degrees, and photographs and slides of his personal and professional life.

Series consists of administrative resources files which were maintained for Nouwen by Nouwen's administrative staffs from 1983 to 1997. These files contain materials collected by Nouwen in order to assist him with his roles as pastor, writer, researcher, and friend. In addition to subject-based material such as newspaper clippings and brochures, it is evident that Nouwen's administrative assistants at Daybreak used these files to hold administrative material related to liturgical events such as Christmas, Lent, and Easter, as well as other aspects of Nouwen's duties in the community. These files were likely maintained as a resource for Nouwen regarding his daily work.

The titles of the files are taken directly from the file labels created by Nouwen and his administrative assistants, unless otherwise noted. The files are arranged by subject or topic (such as Latin America, Vincent van Gogh, or Abbey of the Genesee), are in alphabetical order, and materials within the files have been maintained chronologically. Many of the materials have been placed in this series because they contain annotations, either by Nouwen or an assistant, saying "File" with the subject or name or "File - Resource files."

Records in this fonds document to varying degrees the dual aspects of Prof. Hume’s career – as a computer scientist and as a teacher of physics. This fonds does not, in any substantial way, document his many administrative roles within the University of Toronto or within professional associations.

For a good overview of his career, researchers should consult Series 1 Biographical for summary information on his achievements and career highlights. Series 3 Professional Correspondence also gives a good overview of what Prof. Hume was working on at a given period of time because it is varied in content and is arranged chronologically. Additional correspondence documenting these activities specifically can be found in Series 4 Publishing, Series 6 Professional Activities and Series 7 Broadcasting and Film. His research in computer science and the many ways he disseminated that knowledge through articles, talks, published works and teaching is documented in Series 4 Publishing, Series 5 Talks and Addresses and Series 6 Teaching. Researchers should note however that manuscripts do not exist for any of the computer science textbooks for which he was so well known nor are there extensive notes, memos or correspondence that discuss writing projects except some correspondence with publishers. There is, however, a good representation of his talks and lectures as well a manuscript and typescript of his textbook Physics in Two Volumes, co-authored with Donald Ivey.

His work in educational television and film is very well documented and is contained in Series 7 Broadcasting and Film. Records in this series will be of interest to researchers studying early Canadian broadcasting, educational television, and the teaching of science – in particular physics for general consumption. Several reports found in this series discuss the themes and goals of many of the programmes.

Finally, a lighter side of Prof. Hume can be found in Series 8 Arts and Letters Club, as it relates to his involvement in the Spring Review. Records in this series would be of interest to anyone researching amateur musical theatre and arts clubs generally.
