Leon Katz Momento Books

Two-volume book which consists of 341 paintings, sketches, prints, collages, autographs, partial music scores, poetry and prose collected by Katz, with the help of his wife Johanna, over nearly three decades, from 1970-1998.

Among the Canadian contributors: Farley Mowat, Margaret Atwood, Northup Frye, Robertson Davies, Michael Ondaatje, Arthur Lismer, Thoreau MacDonald (a frequent contributor), Leon Bellefleur. Interest
contributors: Marc Chagall, Rufino Tamayo, Henry Moore, Andy Warhol, among many others.

Leon Katz Collection

Consists largely of photographs, many of them signed, primarily of artists and writers. Also contains background material Katz collected on the various individuals represented in his Momento Books, including newspaper clippings and related correspondence. It also includes photographs of Henry Moore's work, material from the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto during the 1970s, and misc. professional material (photographs, correspondence, patents, printed matter) from Leon Katz's career as owner and president at Canada X-Ray Ltd. Personal material includes letters from Katz's parents written in the 1930s and a journal kept by Katz from 1958-1961. Additional correspondence includes holiday cards from friends, as well as letters from anonymous collectors solicited by Katz in advertisements in various magazines for a study he hoped to do on the psychology of collecting.

Ray Smith Papers

Included in the 2016 accrual are audio cassettes documenting Ray Smith’s appearances on radio shows, readings that he did for radio and live audiences and radio performances of his works. Radio shows that Smith appeared on include CBC’s Morningside, Homerun, State of the Arts, Art Talks, Aircraft and Saturday Spotlight. Works that he read include “Lord Nelson Tavern,” “The Man who Loved Jane Austen,” “The Poetry of the Dram,” “A Night at the Opera” and “A Matter of Detail.” Also included are recordings of CBC Stage performances of “Lord Nelson’s Tavern” and “Eden’s Next to Last Dreamer.” Most of the audio cassettes contain multiple appearances, readings and/or performances. Titles and descriptions of cassette contents are taken directly from the cassette labels and cassettes have been arranged in chronological order.

Collection consists of extensive drafts, notes, editing and research material for various Teleky works, including: Winter in Hollywood; Pack Up the Moon; Hungarian Rhapsodies; The Paris Years of Rosie Kamin; Goodnight, Sweetheart and other stories; The Hermit's Kiss; The Oxford Book of French-Canadian short stories and early writings. It also includes manuscripts from other writers such as Larry Fineberg, Priscila Uppal, David Plante, Rosemary Sullivan, Adele Wiseman, Anne Carson and Betty Jane Wylie.

Richard Teleky Papers

Contains various draft manuscripts, proof sheets, notes and source material for Teleky's novels (Pack Up the Moon, Winter in Hollywood), poetry (The Hermit's Kiss, The Hermit in Arcadia) and non-fiction writing (The Dog on the Bed: A Canine Alphabet; draft versions of short stories for anthologies edited by Teleky (including The Exile Book of Canadian Dog Stories and The Exile Book of Yiddish Women Writers ed. Frieda Johles Forman); plus some correspondence related to these projects.
Arrangement: The material is arranged chronologically in four series:

Sir Edmund Walker Papers

This collection includes 56 boxes and items. The documents consist of personal and business correspondence, articles and addresses, banking and legal documents, estate information, biography information, and other items. The correspondence relates to art and the National Gallery, De Grassi Point, geology, Japanese consul, The Champlain Society, the National Battlefields Commission, the Royal Colonial Institute, the Round Table, University College Alumnae Association Building Committee. There is a significant amount of correspondence from the Canadian Bank of Commerce, the University of Toronto, and the Royal Ontario Museum, and with many prominent individuals in Canada and worldwide as well as letters to Mary before and after they married and messages of condolence received by the family after the death of Sir Edmund Walker. Other documents in the collection relate to the Alexander, Buchan, and Morrow families; the Coronation of King George V and other special events; the Duke of Sutherland's Scheme (Imperial Colonization Corporation of Canada); the West Virginia Debt Settlement; and C. White Mortimer. The items are books, a lace handkerchief, a wooden drawer containing numerous calling cards, card index of pictures and art objects, a framed drawing of the coat of arms, Sir Edmund Walker's certificates and medal upon being admitted as a Knight of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, pieces of the fireplace from Long Garth, a silver vase, a silver bowl, a china plate with Walker crest and logo, and a fishing rod and net.

This accession of John Millyard's papers is the first by the Fisher Library. It consists primarily of materials - including manuscripts, correspondence and research materials used to produce the books The Money Jar (first published by Key Porter Books, 1990), The Money Gap (published by Money Jar Publishing, 1997), and The Money Team (Money Jar Publishing, 1999). It also consists of material related to Money Jar Publishing, Millyard's independent company, and for the book Fiddlers and Whores (London: Chatham, 2006), a diary/journal written in 1807 by a man who worked as a surgeon with Lord Nelson's fleet in the Mediterranean, which Millyard was instrumental in getting published.

This collection includes original draft manuscripts, galleys and page proofs for Manguel's published work, including his book A Reading Diary (2004) and his anthology Penguin Book of Christmas Stories (2005), as well as for his articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications. It also includes translations of his work, published clippings (of his own work and articles about him), correspondence (October 1999-July 2005) - both personal and business - material related to his work on various literary juries (including the Man Booker International Prize 2005), his drawings, and bound galleys and page-proofs of books sent to Manguel for review.

Alberto Manguel Papers

The 2006 accession complements the existing Alberto Manguel collections held at the Fisher Library. It consists primarily of original draft manuscripts, translations, galleys and page proofs for Manguel's recently published work, notably The Library at Night (published 2006), as well as for his commissioned articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications. (Many of these published articles are in the collection.) It also includes manuscript drafts for two as-yet unpublished novels in English, At The Mad Hatter's Table and The Book of Praise. Among the other published works represented in this collection are: The Reading Diary (US version, published in 2004); two Manguel-edited anthologies: THe Penguin Book of Christmas Stories (2005) and Memoria Para el Olvido: Los ensayos de Robert Louis Stevenson (2005); A Room Full of Toys (2006); and, The Secret Supper, authored in Spanish by Javier Sierra and translated by Manguel. It also includes material for the book series Manguel edits for the French published Actes Sud.

There is a small number of personal diaries and agendas in this collection, as well as correspondence, primarily related to his work. There are also large files of correspondence and other administrative records from his two primary agencies of the past 15 years, Lucina Vardey and Westwood Creative Artists, both based in Toronto.

Alberto Manguel Papers

Consists of original draft manuscripts and translations of Manguel's commissioned articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications, as well as manuscripts, proofs and other related material for the Manguel-authored books Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey: A Biography (published in 2007 by Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver), The Reading Diary, The Library At Night and The Bride of Frankenstein (published by the British Film Institute, 1997). It also includes material for several Manguel-edited anthologies - including The Penguin Book of Summer Stories (released 2007) - correspondence, both general and with his new literary agency, Agencia Schavelzon, and material for the book series, Cabinet de lecture, which Manguel edits for the French publisher Actes Sud. The collection also includes material from Timothy Findley (and his partner William Whitehead), primarily correspondence, but also two books on whose inside covers Findley wrote notes for two novels he was beginning.
