Karen Mulhallen Papers

This latest accession of Karen Mulhallen’s papers consists of both Descant materials – manuscripts, correspondence and proofs, as well as Mulhallen’s own files for the literary journal – and papers pertaining to Mulhallen’s literary work, including the book Acquainted with Absence: Selected Poems (published by Blaurock Press, 2009) along with other Mulhallen books. It also includes material for an Open Radio program developed by Mulhallen called Tale and the Teller, as well as correspondence, files relating to her various archival and book donations, and various academic materials, primarily lecture notes for courses she taught at Ryerson.

Roderick Stewart Collection of Bethune

Includes extensive research, drafts and notes for work on Dr. Norman Bethune, including for Stewart’s The Mind of Norman Bethune and Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune. Includes extensive research relating to the Spanish Civil War and Dr. Bethune, China, and the life and work of Dr. Bethune.

Alberto Manguel Papers

This latest accession of the Alberto Manguel Papers complements and builds on the existing Manguel Papers held at the Fisher Library (see MS Colls 00405, 00425, 00444, 00477, 00522, 00541). It includes manuscripts for City of Words (the 2007 Massey Lecture delivered by Manguel, and published by House of Anansi Press) and All Men Are Liars, a novel begun in English in the early 1990s but eventually completed, and published, in Spanish as Todos los hombres son mentirosos. It also includes French translations, including manuscripts and page proofs, of the above three books. As well, the collection consists of the manuscripts, primarily in English and Spanish, for Manguel’s numerous writing projects in 2008-09, and material from various projects, including the 2009 TVO-produced television series “Empire of the Words.” The collection also includes correspondence – including letters and notes from writers Isabel Huggan, Anne Michaels, Rohinton Mistry, P.K. Page and Susan Swan – literary jury work, manuscripts sent to Manguel for review or reading, and an extensive collection of antiquarian book catalogues collected by Manguel.

Maureen Scott Harris Papers

This latest accession of Maureen Scott Harris’ papers include manuscript drafts of various writing projects – including book reviews and essays – as well as material from the Milkweed Collective, Brick Books, correspondence and material collected for a Ken Saro-Wiwa reading Harris organized.

John Millyard Papers

This accession of John Millyard's papers is the first by the Fisher Library. It consists primarily of materials - including manuscripts, correspondence and research materials used to produce the books The Money Jar (first published by Key Porter Books, 1990), The Money Gap (published by Money Jar Publishing, 1997), and The Money Team (Money Jar Publishing, 1999). It also consists of material related to Money Jar Publishing, Millyard's independent company, and for the book Fiddlers and Whores (London: Chatham, 2006), a diary/journal written in 1807 by a man who worked as a surgeon with Lord Nelson's fleet in the Mediterranean, which Millyard was instrumental in getting published.

Alberto Manguel Papers

This latest accession complements and builds on the existing collections of Alberto Manguel's papers held at the Fisher Library. It consists of manuscript drafts (including translations) of his various works - both fiction and non-fiction - including his 2007 Massey Lecture, "The City of Words." It also contains other editorial material, primarily galley and page proofs, as well as correspondence and material related to awards won by Manguel and various literary juries he has served on.

M.R. Appell Papers

Collection consists of correspondence, including letters from Nelson Ball, J.W. Curry and Douglas Henderson, as well as poetry booklets created by Appell and small press imprints and publications.

This collection consists of extensive material - manuscripts, research materials, correspondence - related to published books by Lawrence Hill, including Any Known Blood; Some Great Thing; The Book of Negroes/Someone Knows My Name; Black Berry, Sweet Juice; Women of Vision: the Story of the Canadian Womens Association; Trials and Triumphs: the Story of African Canadians; The Deserter's Tale: the Story of an Ordinary Soldier Who Walked Away from the War in Iraq, among other titles and projects. It also includes correspondence, photographs, family histories and other material related to the life and work of Hill.

David Donnell Papers

Includes holograph, typescript and word processed drafts of poems, reviews and other work by David Donnell; material, including student work, relating to teaching master poetry classes at Ryerson University and the University of Toronto; correspondence; print, appearances and other material related to the life and work of David Donnell.

George Fetherling Papers

Includes proofs of Red Light Neon by Daniel Francis; Canadian Poems for Canadian Kids edited by Jen Hamilton, illustrated by Merrill Fearon (both Subway Books titles); first proofs, corrected, of River of Gold by George Fetherling; only proof, corrected, of revised edition of Running Away to Sea by George Fetherling; working files of Subway Books, George Fetherling’s small press, 1997 to date, arranged by title. These files include manuscripts; correspondence with authors, editors, distributors, sales representatives and interns; catalogues; production records; photographs and illustrations; outgoing and incoming publicity; reviews and materials relating to memberships in publishing organizations. Barbarian Press Papers

This collection complements the existing Barbarian Press Papers held at the Fisher Library. It consists of a variety of material – including correspondence, manuscripts, and other production material – related to the production and publishing of the Barbarian titles Venus & Adonis (published 2005), The Wolf’s Carol (2006), Under Strange Sail (2007), Amours de Voyage (2007) and Not Yet (privately printed in 2006), as well as various pamphlets, broadsheets and ephemera produced by the Mission, B.C. team of Crispin and Jan Elsted.

Jack MacLeod Papers

Includes the first drafts of the first seven chapters of a new novel-in-progress, with the working title, ‘Mr. Godwin, Out of the Whirlwind’, in holograph and word processed; copies of letters to John Metcalf, re: John Newlove, Porcupine’s Quill and the upcoming publication of MacLeod’s novel, Uproar, in 2008.

Lorna Goodison Papers

Includes various earlier [1995- ] and later drafts of From Harvey River: a memoir of my mother and her people. Early working titles include ‘Rock Steady’, ‘Rocksteady’ and ‘The Rock Steady Dancer.’ Editorial revisions and notes by J. Edward Chamberlin are included on several drafts. This collection consists of material, including manuscript drafts and correspondence, for various projects David Young worked on between 2004 and 2007. It includes "Sold", a project he developed for CTV, as well as his work for the TV program ReGenesis. it also includes material from various productions of his plays, Glenn and Inexpressible Island, among other projects.

Jo Beverley Papers

The collection consists of manuscript drafts and proofs of her novels and novellas, as well manuscripts of unpublished work and some non-fiction. It also includes correspondence (editorial as well as fan mail), and marketing and publicity material.

Alberto Manguel Papers

Consists of original draft manuscripts and translations of Manguel's commissioned articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications, as well as manuscripts, proofs and other related material for the Manguel-authored books Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey: A Biography (published in 2007 by Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver), The Reading Diary, The Library At Night and The Bride of Frankenstein (published by the British Film Institute, 1997). It also includes material for several Manguel-edited anthologies - including The Penguin Book of Summer Stories (released 2007) - correspondence, both general and with his new literary agency, Agencia Schavelzon, and material for the book series, Cabinet de lecture, which Manguel edits for the French publisher Actes Sud. The collection also includes material from Timothy Findley (and his partner William Whitehead), primarily correspondence, but also two books on whose inside covers Findley wrote notes for two novels he was beginning.

Karen Mulhallen Papers

Collection consists of editorial material - including manuscripts, page proofs and correspondence - for issues of the Mulhallen-edited literary journal Descant (nos. 133-136), as well as manuscripts and other materials of Mulhallen's own literary output. It includes a Renga Talk written in collaboration with artist Virgil Burnett, and material related to her book Sea Horses (Black Moss Press, 2007). The remainder of the collection is research and lecture notes, both for courses taken by Mulhallen when she was a student at the University of Toronto and for her own lectures at Ryerson University, as well as other personal and miscellaneous materials.

Martin Hunter Papers

This latest accession complements and builds on the previous collection of Martin Hunter’s papers (MS Coll 00511). It includes manuscript drafts of various plays and musicals written by Hunter, as well as materials (programs, notes and photographs) associated with productions directed and/or written by Hunter. It also includes a substantial amount of correspondence, both personal and business, including letters written and received by Hunter from the 1950s.

Maureen Scott Harris Papers

This collection consists of manuscript drafts for various Harris projects, including her chapbook The Raven and the Writing Desk (illustrated by Kelly Aitken and published by Jack Pine Press, 2007), drafts for various freelance writing projects, including blurbs.

George Whipple Papers

Includes 41 slides of paintings created in 1962-63 (‘originals lost, alas’); 19 small albums containing 36 original and/or copies of drawings, 684 altogether; 1 large album of photos taken from slides of 29 paintings, plus 12 reproductions of small drawings; some miscellaneous papers and his 10th book, Kites, published by Ekstasis Editions in 2007.

Maureen Scott Harris Papers

This collection consists primarily of a selection of Harris’ professional work since 2001, including books reviews she’s written for various publications and her promotional work for London, Ont.-based Brick Books, where she’s the production editor.
