Jean Vanier, "Sexuality - Affectivity" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I think we can say we are becoming conscious of our mission. I began L'Arche in an unconscious way as perhaps you did too. Each of us has our story. But if you look back to the origins of why you came, it's small to what we are discovering today. Our mission is much bigger than we imagined and possibly more important than we imagined.

Michael Hollings, Retreat 7 and Retreat 8

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Talk #7: We will start by looking at the call of Samuel in the O.T. I want to stress a few things. The call comes to Samuel and he is already under a master. So he goes to Eli three times before they figure it all out. Then Yahweh does speak to Samuel who responds "your servant is listening." This listening is critical. Talk #8: I want to continue with the reality of God's call and in particular your call to live with handicapped people. It's very important indeed that we question ourselves about the quality of our sharing because I think we have to see it as the Lord sharing with us. We have to be humble as he is touching us in a different way.

Because today we are going to think about this exchange of water in Chapter 4 of St. John.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapter 1"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Do you remember that at the beginning that I said that I wanted to keep chapter 1 until the end because most authors write their introductions after they finish their book, which St John did as well. Until you articulate your thoughts in words, you don't really know what you thought is. The climax of this prologue, in fact what he discovered, is that the "Word was made flesh and dwelt among...."

So I will put it to you: "Do I have the right picture?" about stress in your context. If not, please tell me and share it with the group so we can together have a better understanding of what it means to be a senior worker in L'Arche. The difficulties we will find are not always stressful but promote growth, both personal and professional

Jack Dunham, "Stress in Residential Care" (part 2)

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to explore some of the difficulties you have had with the residents. This will lead us to a very important question which we raised already with the assistants: When do we let the residents go? With the residents, in comparison to the assistants, you have even more guilt feelings about this critical decision.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Good that we talk about expectations and the feeling that they have to be accurate in relation to the assistants looking at L'Arche before they come in. This is because if their expectations are very inaccurate, then their behavior will be quite inappropriate for L'Arche. For example, if they believe L'Arche is a place where assistants can do their own thing, that's a big problem!
