This accession of the Tripe Family Papers includes correspondence, documents, photographs, and genealogical materials relating to descendants of Emily (Tripe) James 1817-1850, as well as photographs, documents and heraldry material pertaining to both ancestors and descendants of Emily's brother Alfred Tripe 1818-1854. Correspondence, written in England, Hawaii, and mainland America, relates to Emily's grandchildren, specifically William Francis James (1861-1944), Caroline Laura James (1861-1941) and Emma Polglase (James) Stevens Edwardes (1867-1958), and their mother Caroline Sophia (Beaumont) James (1842-1927) as well as the descendants of William Francis James, particularly Francis Leicester James (1888-1977). The letters describe several visits by family members to others in England and Hawaii, as well as ongoing correspondence between the James family in Hawaii, England, and India. Of note, are descriptions and observations of travel through mainland America, a first-hand account of the 1911 Delhi Durbar, discussions of the First and Second World Wars, and the fate of an oil portrait of James James (1800) by John Opie. James family documents include rare postcards of India from 1905-1913, the majority acquired and distributed to family members by Edith (James) Storrs (1873-1940). Xerox copies in this accession of two manuscripts written by William Francis James on his experiences immigrating to the United States in the 1880s, his service with Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and subsequent service as an Assistant Surgeon in the Philippines 1899-1903 can be compared with his original letters about these experiences in Tripe Family Papers 2016 (MS Coll 00050A). There is also a typescript manuscript written by William Francis James’ daughter, Naomi (James) Hart (1898-2001) on the James’ family experience of immigrating to Hawaii. Photographs depict descendants of the James family taken by Janet Dewan on trips to England and Hawaii in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as original historical photographs of James descendants taken in 1916 and 1929, and copies of historical James photographs made by Janet Dewan in 1985. Tripe material in this collection includes the metal seal bearing the crest and motto of Cornelius Tripe (1785-1860) and a wax rubbing made of the monumental inscription to William Tripe (died 1681) and Margaret his wife (died 1690) in the Parish church of All Saints, Kenton, Devon. Also included is material related to the military service of Alfred King Tripe (1887-1917), and Philip Valentine King Tripe (1918-1982), as well as five draft typescripts of memories, typed and hand-corrected by Marian F.K (Tripe) Ade (1915-2010), regarding family history, immigration, and military involvement.

This is the first accession of the Coach House Press (CHP) papers by the Fisher Library. It primarily includes files accumulated and maintained by Stan Bevington, founder of the CHP. (While Library and Archives Canada holds a significant amount of Coach House Press materials, Bevington held back many of his own personal files related to CHP, with the intention of donating them to the Fisher Library). The papers include accounting materials for the Press–price quotes, sales invoices, payroll information, etc. –and other materials related to the running of the CHP. It also includes material collected by Bevington, dubbed “Stan’s ephemera,” which contain handwritten notes written by Bevington, as well as correspondence, programs and other assorted and interesting items.
The collection is particularly noteworthy for its extensive collection of computer-related material, including the files for SoftQuad, the company co-founded by Bevington that was at the forefront of the digital age in publishing. Bevington is considered a publishing pioneer in the transition to digital technology from traditional typesetting.

This collection features the bulk of material associated with Alan Stein’s fine press imprint Church Street Press.

This latest accession of Alan Stein’s Papers, the second by the Fisher, consists of archival items
related to Stein’s work as a book maker, artist and wood engraving. Much of the material relates
to his collaboration with the Newfoundland poet Michael Crummy and the production of the fine
press book Viewfinder, published by Stein’s Church Street Press in 2014. It also contains four
boxes of Stein’s engraved wood blocks (for Viewfinder, as well as the Church Street publications
Home Country, In Mexico and The Golden Lilies) and proofs and art work for other projects.

The second accession of the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge Papers includes predominantly textual (handwritten and typescript) material relating to the administration and operation of the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge Company and the Niagara Falls International Bridge Company during the years 1801 – 1937 (bulk 1835-1937).

This latest accession of Karen Mulhallen’s papers includes editorial material – primarily manuscripts, proofs and correspondence – for issues 144, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 162, 163, 165, 166 and 167of the literary journal Descant. Also included are submissions and rejections to Descant, and general administration files including staff and hiring, financials, correspondence, fundraising, subscriptions and events. There are also files related to the Winston Collins Poetry Prize and Writers’ Reserve competitions, as well as administrative files from Now Hear This! (NHT!) and Students, Writers and Teachers Programs (SWAT), which were charitable organizations created by Descant to improve literacy in Toronto-area schools. This latest accession of Karen Mulhallen’s papers consists of both Descant materials – manuscripts, correspondence and proofs, as well as Mulhallen’s own files for the literary journal – and papers pertaining to Mulhallen’s literary work, including the book Acquainted with Absence: Selected Poems (published by Blaurock Press, 2009) along with other Mulhallen books. Collection ofresearch notes for articles, essays published and unpublished by Robert G. Lawrence (1923-1995) on American and English actors and theatrical companies that have toured in Canada, especially before 1939. Includes correspondence with the families ofthese actors, and with other historians ofCanadian theatre.

This collection consists of the papers of Ronald Bryden and cover a wide range of his professional life: from early scripts co-written by Bryden when he was an undergraduate student at Trinity College, University of Toronto, in the 1940s, through to his published work when he was a journalist and critic in London during the 1960s and early 1970s, and up through the period when he was director of the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama at the University of Toronto. The collection also contains some of Bryden’s original research on the history of theatre, as well as journals that detail the productions he viewed in London, Toronto, Stratford, Ont., and Niagara-on-the-Lake (Shaw Festival).

This gift of papers from the estate of Douglas LePan (1914-1998) includes diaries, journals, manuscripts, notes and correspondence relating to his career as a writer, diplomat and teacher as well as personal correspondence.
