Tape collection

Series consists of electronic music compositions created at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio (UTEMS) and copies of tapes made at other electronic music studios around the world. The series includes the two original card-catalogue indices for the tape collection, organized by tape number and by composer.

Among the tapes that originated at UTEMS are compositions by faculty and students from the Faculty of Music, independent composers who were granted access to the studio, and compositions created by visiting artists, scholars, and composers. Composers at UTEMS included Robert Aitken, John Beckwith, Brian Cherney, Gustav Ciamaga, Richard Henninger, David Jaeger, Larry Lake, John Mills-Cockell, James Montgomery, Harvey Olnick, Dennis Patrick, Myron Schaeffer, David Williams, and many others. Composers from other studios include Milton Babbitt, Henk Badings, Luciano Berio, Hugh Le Caine, Douglas Lilburn, Pierre Schaeffer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Vladimir Ussachevsky.

In addition to tapes created at UTEMS, the collections includes compositions created at the following studios, listed alphabetically:

2017 acquisition

Films cover a wide variety of subjects and genres. Notables include Charlie Chaplin, Disney shorts, news reels including royal coronations, Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, Marx Brothers, animated shorts from NFB, and a documentary on The Beatles.

2013.007 acquisition (Degrassi Junior High)

Fonds consists of material pertaining to three seasons of production of the half-hour television series Degrassi Junior High. The show ran from 1987 – 1989, and all 42 episodes were broadcast on CBC television. The collection consists of 148 of material spanning all 3 seasons of the show. The fonds is divided into 2 series: Corporate Records and Post-Production Records.

The first series, Corporate Records, consists of 29 boxes. These include correspondence/memos, fan mail, budgets, scripts, promotional materials, financial and banking records, sponsor files, production and continuity stills, character files, permits, legal documents, insurance documents, and music cue sheets.

The second series, Audiovisual Records, consists of 119 boxes. These include original negative, interpositive, A&B rolls, optical soundtrack, raw shoot tapes, raw audio tapes, audio stems, voiceovers, music, master mix audio, edits, various masters, and promo reels. Textual documents include sound notes/charts, editing/mix notes and credits.

The material has retained its original arrangement.

Video recording of Henri Nouwen on L'Arche

File consists of a video recording of Nouwen speaking on the subject of L'Arche at Washington Hall, St. Mary's, near Notre Dame university. Nouwen is introduced by Don McNeill. The theme of the event appears to be "The Year of the Family". This is an amateur video. Joe Vorstermans from L'Arche begins the program by speaking about the history of L'Arche and Jean Vanier.

Photographs and media

This series contains photographs, glass latern slides, photographic slides and a collection of reel to reel films belonging to MacIntosh. Most of the media covers MacIntosh’s professional life: surgical images, patient photographs, procedure documentation and lecture and statistical slides. There are also a small number of personal and family photographic slides which document various family trips and events. Also included is a set of photographs of the HMS Philante, the escort vessel which MacIntosh served on with Royal Navy during the Second World War.

Sound and moving image material

This series is mainly films made by Rappaport relating to the liver. Some titles include: Pathologic Circulation in the Mammalian Liver, The Effects of Mouse Hepatitis Virus on the Microcirculation of the Liver (2 copies on video), Experimental Hepatic Vino-Occlusive Disease, and Normal Circulation of the Mammalian Liver. All films are 16mm format, color and usually silent. Duration of films are from 6 to 30 minutes .

George Ignatieff fonds

Fonds consists of records pertaining to George Ignatieff’s professional career and personal life. Genealogical information about the Ignatieff family documents their lives in Russia and immigration to Canada. Some records relate to the Parkin and Grant familes. Family records include memoirs, diaries, photographs, student records, journals and correspondence. Ignatieff’s professional life as a diplomat with the Canadian government is documented by correspondence, subject files, speeches, reports, newspaper clippings and photographs.
Records from 1972 to 1986 are mainly from Ignatieff’s career as an administrator at the University of Toronto. These records were generated during day-to-day operations of these offices and include correspondence, subject files, speeches, writings, clippings and notebooks. In addition, there are documents associated with other organizations and activities in which he was involved, as well as documents relating to his honorary degrees and awards. Extensive background material and drafts trace the evolution of Ignatieff’s published memoir, The Making of a Peacemonger.

Correspondence and photographs can be found throughout the fonds. Researchers are encouraged to search broadly.
