The Atkins Family Papers

A collection of papers pertaining to the Tinkler, Barnard, and Atkins families of England. The exact relationship between the Tinkler family and the Barnard/Atkins family remains unknown, although the papers related to Tinklers have been preserved together with those of the other families for several generations. The first box includes the military correspondence of Robert Barnard (d. 1854) from Ireland during the great famine year of 1847 as well as his letters from the Crimean War. The second box includes the military correspondence of Sir John Atkins, KCMG, KCVO, FRCS (1875-1963) from his year of service in the Boer War, as well as materials related to his career as a medical officer in the First World War. Boxes 3-5 reflect the life and career of Sir Hedley John Barnard Atkins, KStJ, KBE (1904-1983), first professor of surgery at Guy’s Hospital, London and President of the Royal College of Surgeons. He specialised in the scientific treatment of breast cancer and the Hedley Atkins Breast Unit at New Cross Hospital acknowledges his contribution in the field. From 1971 to 1973 he was President of the Royal Society of Medicine.

The Keemlé Family Papers

A collection of papers pertaining to the Keemlé family of Delaware, Washington, and Toronto. Although the family was American, several lived in Toronto in the years immediately before the First World War. One son, Ned, enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at the beginning of the hostilities and was killed in France in 1915. Another son, Louis, enlisted in the American forces later in the war, but survived. The family also had connections to St Michael’s College, University of Toronto.

The Niagara Falls Museum Papers

Collection consists of archival material related to the museum and its proprietors, including correspondence and promotional material, as well as items documenting Sidney Barnett’s involvement in the militia and Fenian Raids (1866). The collection also includes books and ephemera pertaining to the Niagara Falls tourist industry, such as guidebooks, broadsides, flyers, tickets and certificates. The collection also contains 124 photographs, including glass stereoviews, card stereoviews, ambrotypes, cabinet cards, and albumen photographs, dating from 1850s to the 1890s, with 18 produced by the museum itself.

Collection consists of 34 promissory freight notes for merchandise and peltries shipped aboard the King’s Armed Vessels between British Garrisons on Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Lake Huron (1778-1787). This series includes thirty holograph notes and four printed forms with holograph additions. The printed form are likely produced by William Brown, Quebec’s first printer. Collection also contains 12 manuscript documents and letters on the hardships experienced by fur traders and merchants in their attempts to conduct business in the Great Lakes region (1783-1793). These documents primarily illustrate the experiences of three prominent fur traders: Philippe-Francois de Rastel de Rocheblave, James Ellice and Toussaint Pothier.

Contains the personal archives of Lester Douglas of four artists: Earl Horter, Hans Foy, David Karfunkle and Barbara Shermund. Douglas was acquainted with these artists through his role as the Director of Art and Printing for the Chamber of Commerce of the United States and through his work as a typographer and book designer. These collections include original artworks from all four artists, including drawings, paintings, etchings and engravings, some of them inscribed with dedications to Douglas. Apart from Horter, the artworks are contained in portfolios created by Douglas. Also included is correspondence from Horter and Foy to Douglas, as well as some ephemera, such as newspaper clippings and exhibition pamphlets for Horter, Foy and Karfunkle.

The Solidarity [Solidarność] Collection

This collection of Polish uncensored publications and Solidarity/[Solidarność] material includes non-periodical publications, graphics, photographs, cassettes, medals, stamps, artifacts, posters as well as other material generated by "Solidarność” and related organizations in Poland and internationally. Periodicals, books and pamphlets which initially constituted the largest part of the collection, have been catalogued separately.

Some of the collection highlights include bulletins and documents issued by the Coordinating Office Abroad of NSZZ “Solidarność” and by international groups organized in support of NSZZ “Solidarność.” Canadian organizations and initiatives are represented extensively. In 1983, the call to expand the collection was issued to private donors to donate Polish Solidarity material in their possession, and the collection has grown since then.

Series 1: People
The first series contains press clippings from various publications of various actors, reviews, and critics of the films—numerous articles on the Directors, musicians, producers, and writers. Press clippings are organized alphabetically by last name, from Joe Abeywicrema to Valerio Zurlini.

Series 2: AGE Series III
The A-G-E Film Society of Toronto was created in 1955 until 1962 for the purpose of “providing those who lived through the cinema’s formative years with the opportunity to relive the past, and to give the new generation of film enthusiasts a chance to see what had been accomplished in motion pictures before their interest in films began.” Within the second series, the AGE collection includes the application for membership in the AGE. It contains the AGE 2nd to AGE 6th Season programmes letter from the AGE Film Society of Toronto to various partners and film organizations. The series also includes several newspaper clippings on the AGE Society.

Series 3: Film Company Catalogues
The third series contains the documents and items from various film production companies whose titles are included in the TFS collection. Production company catalogues collected are from Canadian and international film companies. Companies included in the series are A World of Entertainment, Universal/16, Pan Canadian Film Distributors Inc, Cinematheque Ontario, Paramount, Universal Pictures and more. Many catalogues also come from the TFS Summer series and other film events hosted by TFS.

Series 4: Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Award
The Fourth series contains the textual files and objects on the Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Award. The award was named in honour of Dorothy and Oscar Burritt, who left Vancouver from the Vancouver branch of the Canadian film Society to aid in the creation of the TFS. The Burritt’s contribution to the film society movement was recognized by a special Canadian Film Award in 1963, just a few months before Dorothy’s death. The Toronto Film Society established the Dorothy Burritt Memorial Award (later renamed for Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Memorial Award), an annual cash grant to support projects that contribute “to greater understanding and enjoyment of the film as an art”. The collection includes correspondences from various film societies, such as the Vancouver branch and other film production companies. It also contains reports, Memorial Award packages, press clippings, marketing on advertising the various TFS events, and correspondence to the Burritt Memorial Award Committee.

Series 5: Toronto Film Society Administration
The Fifth series contains the documentation on the administration side of the TFS. Many of the TFS's administration documents include meeting minutes from their AGM (Annual General Meeting) and TFS Board Meeting Minutes. Such meetings include the general and board meeting minutes, documents that pertain to the international film festival and many other festivals, TFS committee report, and correspondences. The series also contains the administration for their awards, such as the Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Memorial Award and film acquisitions. TFS administration documents include their members' information, votes and questionnaires for their members. It also consists of the Eastman House, financial reports, and statements on the TFS events, such as the summer and seasons series. Lastly, include film acquisition documents of various films.

Fonds consists of records documenting the academic and professional career of Prof. Wilson from his early research, teaching and publication activities at Harvard University through his more than forty years at the University of Toronto. Series 1 to 3 contain correspondence and professional files documenting his activities at Harvard University and the University of Toronto. Series 3 provides documentation on the operation of the Institute for Policy Analysis for much of the past thirty years and the segregation of the Department of Political Economy in 1982. Details relating to the development of courses and programmes of study in the developing fields of social and economic policy will be found in the correspondence and other documents.

Series 4 consists of records relating to Prof. Wilson’s own undergraduate education
at the University of British Columbia and graduate education at Harvard University.

The majority of the records in the first accession (B2001-0038) concern the research and writing of various studies, working papers and policy papers undertaken by Prof. Wilson as a member of the Institute for Policy Analysis. A major study on the Appliance industry commissioned by the federal Department of Industry in 1968 was one of the first undertaken by the new Institute. The records for this study found in Series 9 consist of correspondence, data, research files and transcripts of interviews with major manufacturing companies in Canada. Records relating to other studies, such as those conducted for the Anti-Inflation Board, will be found in Series 8.

Series 8 documents Prof. Wilson’s teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate level. One of his major achievements concerned the development of courses and programmes in Industrial Organization developed for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Series 10 documents the consulting work of Prof. Wilson, primarily under the umbrella of Wilson Research Economics, for various corporations and government agencies.

Includes correspondence and printed E-mail messages, talks, manuscripts of articles, research notes, reviews and recommendations, teaching files and professional association files. Dr. Hull was also a student of the well known mathematician, Leopold Infeld at the time of his resignation from the University of Toronto; there are some copies of correspondence between Hull and Infeld. Also included is Dr. Hull's collection of photographs which he took documenting various events of the Arts and Letters Club 1981-1996.

Notably missing are significant records relating to his role as a key administrator in the Department of Computer Science, his career as an influential educator and any records documenting his time at the University of British Columbia and at the University of Toronto as a student in the 1940s.
