Four chronologically ordered volumes relating to research carried out by Professor George F Wright on Second World War defence projects for the federal government of Canada through the National Research Council of Canada.

The first volume is Defence Project CE-12 and encompassses the dates December, 1939 to June, 1942. It contains a series of chemical research reports related to wartime defence initiatives. The following three volumes consists of reports to ACE (Associate Commitee on Explosives) covering the dates August 1944 to June 1945. They contain reports, previously marked 'secret' relating to wartime research and experimentation on the explosive properties of compounds. Some of the reports contain photographs tipped in; there is also a file of loose photographs and correspondence.

This collection consists of biographical information, certificates and diplomas, correspondence relating to Dr. Welsh’s employment as Chairman of the Department of Physics, with officials of the Order of Canada, his retirement, the H.L. Welsh Lectureship, and other honors. The collection also includes notes and outlines from four interviews done for the U of T Oral History Programme. The collection includes four photographs, several degrees, awards, certificates, and posters. This collection has been divided into three series based on the form and content of the records; 1) Correspondence and Biographical Material, 2) Degrees, Awards, and Certificates, and 3) Photographs.

James Arnold Dauphinee fonds

The papers of James Arnold Dauphinee are a particularly fine representation of their type. Highly intelligent and inventive, Dr. Dauphinee had an international reputation in his field, pathological chemistry. He maintained a broad range of other interest, from music to philately, and was known to play the occasional game of golf. He was something of a packrat but, fortunately, also a meticulous record keeper. His papers are of value to the reader from a number of perspectives. A history of the Department of Pathological Chemistry could not be written without reference to them. Dr. Dauphinee's files cover the years 1934-1972 and he also preserved some of the papers of his predecessor as head, Andrew Hunter. The Department is not well represented elsewhere in the holdings in the University Archives.

Dr. Dauphinee was very interested in new developments in research. After his return from military service during World War II, he became deeply involved in the study of the effects of radiation on the human body. His papers are a rich resource for this pioneering work, as they are for the work he began as a medical student on arginase and the functioning of the liver and carried on throughout the rest of his life. Dr. Dauphinee wrote numerous scientific papers, many of which were published. Some very interesting ones exist in draft form only, but contain his evolving ideas on problems being studied. He also believed in the wider dissemination of information, and was much in demand as a speaker. His papers contain many of his addresses and document his enthusiastic support of organizations such as the Royal Canadian. Institute.

He was also keenly interested in professional development and the maintenance of high standards in his discipline. He belonged to a large number of professional associations and devoted much energy to some of them, including the I College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The qualities evident here and in his research were also reflected in his relationship with his patients. His concern for their well-being is evident in his extensive patient files and in the records he kept while on active service during World War II.

The records include diaries, certificates, legal documents, course notes and term papers, lecture notes, notes, medical case books, addresses, publications, blueprints, design drawings, photographs, lantern slides, sketches, trench and other military maps (First World War), press clippings and medals. The most extensive series record the activities of Alexander Peter Cockburn as president of the Muskoka and Nipissing Navigation Company; Harriet Cockburn as a medical doctor, especially relating to her service in Serbia during the First World War; Jean Munro's career as an artist in France; and Roy Cockburn's career as professor of engineering drawing in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, and his military service in the First World War with the Royal Engineers in France and with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under General Allenby in Palestine.

B2003-0022: Correspondence to A.B. Macallum who was professor of Physiology starting in 1901 and later professor of Biochemistry from 1908-1917. Some of the correspondence relates to his role in helping to organize the Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at the University of Toronto in 1897. Collection notably includes anatomical drawings of the adult human, adult embryo, cat, fetal pig, dogfish, necturus, frog and other assorted zoology. Includes accessions from 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2015. Accessions from the gifts of 2001 and 2003 were catalogued separately. For additional drawings and illustrations from Outline of Cat Anatomy with Reference to the Human (University of Toronto Press, 2000) and Atlas of General Zoology (Burgess Publishing Co., 1991), Anatomy of the Fetal Pig (University of Washington Press, 1963). B1997-0031 (1909-1997, 9 boxes and 2 items): This accession contains correspondence, manuscripts of published and unpublished articles, books and papers, offprints, notes, lectures and works of art organized into nine series. Series I provides some documentation of his early student life as well as a comprehensive curriculum vitae, prepared in 1991. Series II to V are predominantly correspondence, both received and sent, documenting his personal and professional life from his student days at the University of Toronto through his career as University professor in Winnipeg and Toronto. The most comprehensive evidence of his range of writing and social activist activities will be found among Series II General correspondence which spans some thirty-seven years. Articles and correspondence regarding his involvement in the “Harry Crowe Case” will be found in Series III. Series IV and V supplement Series II with correspondence, reports and notes relating to specific activities at the University of Toronto such as the supervision of graduate students and participation in campus groups such as the Faculty Committee on Vietnam and the University League for Social Reform. Some additional teaching materials for courses in history will be found in Series VIII.

Series 6 and 7 relate to scholarly writing and contain predominantly copies of articles and correspondence relating to books published. Unfortunately, few manuscripts for these publications have survived.

The two watercolours in Series 9 provide another dimension that has been overlooked in biographies produced to date – that of amateur artist. The bulk of his original artwork remains with his family as a lasting testament to a multi-faceted and talented scholar.

Series 1 is made up of three files devoted to Shorter's curriculum vitae, University of Toronto appointments and research grants and proposals. Series 2, the major portion of the accession, consists of professional and private correspondence. Series 3 is comprised of a single annotated book edited by Shorter. Series 4 is five strips of photo negatives of Edward L. Shorter dating from about the mid-1970's.

Series 1 Correspondence also documents his mentoring role and his role as a referee and evaluator of peer and student work. Fonds consists of material documenting the careers of both Prof. Frederick Winter and Joan Winter, particularly related to their archaeological research. Material in the fonds represents both of their individual work and education, as well as research conducted and presentations given together. The records of Prof. Frederick Winter’s cover his publishing activity, research across Europe, particularly within Greece, teaching, and some aspects of his doctoral work.

Joan Winter’s records make up a larger portion of the fonds’ material with considerable documentation of her undergraduate education at the University of Alberta as well as her time at the University of Toronto. Records also include Joan Winter’s teaching material as well as the tutorials she led for some of Prof. Winter’s courses.

The Winters’ joint research is documented through travel diaries, articles, research, and presentation notes. Some of the presentations are accompanied by photographs and the fonds includes additional graphic material related to their research.

Fonds consists of the professional and personal records of Prof. A.P. Thornton, historian and former Chair of the UofT’s Department of History. Records document some of his publishing activity, academic work presenting and teaching, as well as aspects of his personal life including creative writing and family history. While Prof. Thornton’s administrative role at the University is not significantly reflected in the records, the material contains documentation of the professor’s work with the Presidential Advisory Board in the mid-1980’s related to divestment in South Africa.
