Helen Sawyer Hogg fonds

This fonds contains the personal and professional papers of Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg documenting her contribution to professional astronomy, her high regard as a popular educator as well as her responsibilities as a parent, daughter, wife and friend. The records have been arranged into series either by type of record or to reflect a certain type of activity. Records documenting various aspects of her career are filed first, followed by papers reflecting her personal life.

Included is both professional and personal correspondence; records relating to her activities on associations, boards and organizations; records such as draft manuscripts, correspondence and outlines and data relating to her publishing activities and research; papers relating to her education and her teaching responsibilities; as well as diaries and family papers series.

Because Dr. Hogg's career spanned nearly seven decades during a time astronomy as a discipline was still developing both nationally and internationally, these records are not only useful to those researching Dr. Hogg's achievements but will be insightful to those researchers studying the development of astronomy as a science and profession. Moreover, Dr. Hogg was a woman in a field of science, which is still dominated by men. Those studying women's history may find Dr. Hogg's personal records a useful case study in one woman's success in a largely male dominated profession.

Contained within the Helen S. Hogg personal records are three sous-fonds: Frank S. Hogg [1922-1952], her first husband and also an astronomer at the David Dunlap Observatory; Prof. Ruth Northcott [1932-1969], close personal friend and professional colleague of Helen Hogg, also on staff at the D.D.O.; Dr. C.A. Chant [193- - 194-], director emeritus of the D.D.O and head of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Toronto from 1904-1935. Peter H. Russell fonds

The Peter H. Russell fonds is comprised of three accessions: B2005-0001, B2017-0006, and B2019-0008. The records span over 60 years and document Prof. Russell’s academic career primarily with the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and as a recognized expert in the field of judicial, constitutional, and aboriginal politics.

Arranged in fourteen series, the records consist of correspondence, both personal and professional, manuscripts of published and unpublished works, addresses, talks and reviews, teaching and research materials. In particular, these records document the development of his expertise through the preparation of manuscripts, research, teaching and communication with colleagues at universities in Canada and internationally. Material also reflects Prof. Russell’s advocacy and active engagement in a number of national issues.

Correspondents in accession B2005-0001 include members of the Canadian judiciary such as Justices D. C. McDonald, Bora Laskin, Bertha Wilson, and Alan Linden, and politicians such as Bob Rae, Ian Scott, Ed Broadbent and Stephane Dion.

Both Series 6 (Professional activities and addresses) and Series 11 (Articles, reviews, published addresses and referee comments), contains samples of talks and addresses delivered to prominent bodies such as the Toronto Club, the Canadian Club (Toronto and Winnipeg), to university audiences and local community groups such as Learning Unlimited.

His public service activities with aboriginal groups, such as the Dene Nation, and with related governmental bodies, such as the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the Ipperwash Inquiry, are documented in Series 5 (Consultation and public service). In addition to his academic activities, material from accession B2005-0001 in this series includes records relating to his community involvement with the Wychwood Rate Payer’s Association, the Bathurst-St. Clair Task Force, Legal Aid Committee, Ontario Liberal Association and University Settlement, among others.

Finally, material in this fonds provides significant coverage of Prof. Russell’s participation in associations and organizations such as the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy (Series 7) University of Toronto Faculty Association (Series 8), the College and Retiree Association of Canada (Sub-series 10.1) and the Retired Academics and Librarians of the University of Toronto (Sub-series 10.2).

Kenneth G. McNeill fonds

This fonds documents Professor Kenneth McNeill's research and publishing activities through professional correspondence (Series 1), drafts and typescript of articles, reviews, addresses, referee reports, research data and notes (Series 2 &3). Series 3, in particular, documents research undertaken in the Steel Room in the Department of Physics. Series 4, 5 and 6 document some of his administrative duties within the University and in particular Electron Linear Accelerator committee, and the Radiation Protection Authority. Lecture notes (Series 7) from courses taught both at the University of Glasgow (1952-1957) and at the University of Toronto (1958-1996) document his teaching responsibilities, while early course notes (Series 9) document his education at Oxford in the 1940s.

Prof. McNeill was also an active consultant outside the University, mainly for government but also for industry. Series 8 contains files relating to this consultancy work and in particular to his work on nuclear preparedness for Emergency Planning Ontario, a department within the Ontario Solicitor General’s office. Series 10 contains the collected material for a study on radon levels in Newfoundland mines that Prof. McNeill did for the Atomic Energy Board of Canada.

Mr. Pieters was an active participant in the development of Caribbean students' activities such as the West Indian Students Association. As a student teacher at the Faculty of Education he was active in the Future Teachers Club, a group devoted to promoting teaching as a profession for African Canadians. Harold I. Nelson fonds

This fonds documents Prof. Nelson’s career as a historian, teacher and scholar. While he was not a prolific writer, records in this fond indicate he was a detailed and meticulous researcher who sought to integrate his research into his course teachings. Series 3 Journals, Series 6 Research Notes and Series 7 Lecture Notes, give evidence to this amalgamation between research and classroom. As well, much of his correspondence found in Series 1 Professional Correspondence, and Series 2 Letters of Reference and Recommendations document his relationship with students both while he was their professor and later as these students graduated and applied for employment positions, grants, and/or admission to graduate school. Moreover, the extensive comments and evaluations of student work, documented again in Series 2 Letters of Reference and Recommendations as well as in Sub-Series 8.1 Marks and Comments on Student Work, show the care he took in evaluating and imparting his knowledge to students. The fact that many of his administrative positions and roles on committees tended to focus on curriculum and student experience, indicates how important Prof. Nelson considered his role as educator. These are documented in Series 9 University of Toronto Administration and Series 10 Associations and Committees.

It is important to note the records that were not kept as a result of processing this fonds. Research notes on both primary and secondary sources were only kept when the notes themselves showed some analysis of content. Since most of Prof. Nelson’s research was done before computers and much of it before photocopiers were widely available, most of his research notes were transcriptions or summarized notes from sources. These were often typed up as well and/or written onto index cards and organized into topic. Most of these types of research notes were culled from the fonds.

Records that relate to his role as editor of the International Journal were not found among his papers and so are absent from this fonds. Removed from this fonds were his files as Chair of the International Studies Program. These were accessioned as University Records see - A2009-0006.

This accession consists of the professional records of Lawrence Berk Smith and documents his career as an economist and professor at the University of Toronto. Most of this accession pertains to Professor Smith’s teaching, publishing and consulting activities. Types of records include professional correspondence, subject files, research notes, course outlines, exams, manuscripts, speeches, consultant’s reports, and committee briefs. No personal or family records are contained herein.

Series 1 consists of subject files broadly documenting Lawrence Smith’s teaching, publishing, administrative and consulting activities. Series 2 and Series 3, the largest series in this accession, contain records pertaining to Smith’s teaching and scholarly writings. Series 4 contains records dealing with administrative matters when Professor Smith was Director of Economics and Associate Chairman of Department of Political Economy. Series 5 documents speeches given and conferences attended by Smith in his capacity as an academic and consultant. Finally, Series 6 pertains to Lawrence Smith’s career as an economic consultant for various public and private organizations.

Barry French fonds

To varying degrees, records in this fonds document key components of Prof. French’s career both within UTIAS and as an outside consultant. His education in the newly developing field of aerospace science is documented in his course notes found in Series 10. These notes were kept specifically to document the early teaching of this subject since Prof. French took courses from Professors Ben Etkin and Irvine Glass whose papers are also held by the University Archives. General correspondence files in Series 1, talks and papers found in Series 2 and 3 as well as course lectures found in Series 7 document his broad role as a university professor including his publishing activities, his relationship with other professionals and his role as an academic advisor and teacher. His role as an administrator both at the University and on the boards of professional associations are only marginally documented in two small series of records: University of Toronto, Series 6 and Professional Associations Series 8.

While Series 5 Research is by far the largest series in this fonds, it is mainly confined to the latter part of his career relating to research supporting SCIEX. Except for a few files, early research files are absent from this accession and researchers interested in research in the 1960s leading to Prof. French’s participation in the Viking project will have to make due with records found in Series 2 and 3 and possibly some correspondence in Series 1. The strength of this fonds is how well it documents the research at SCIEX, one of Canada’s most successful companies to evolve from a university research facility. Most records in Series 5, as well administrative files in Series 6 SCIEX, give a good picture of SCIEX’s evolution including the research undertaken, the funding sources available at the time, the business strategies that let to its success and specifically the instrumental role Prof. French played in this commercial enterprise. These records will be of interest to anyone researching the commercialization and marketing of technology in the Canadian setting. SCIEX is also a successful example of cooperation between industry and a university with the support of government agencies.

Charles Norris Cochrane fonds

Records in this fonds document to a limited degree the two writings noted above. There are galley proofs, some correspondence and numerous reviews documenting Christianity and Classical Culture. While there is no draft of any form of Thucydides, there is one file containing correspondence, comments and reviews. It is possible however that notes found in Series 5 relate to the research done for both books as well and lectures and other writings. Series 5 is by far the most extensive series accounting for nearly half the volume of records in this fonds and include not only notes but a bibliographic card index and books from Cochrane’s library that he had annotated.

Apart from his two major publications, Cochrane gave many lectures, wrote reviews and articles. A bibliography can be found in Appendix 1. At the time of his death, it was anticipated that his Yale lectures on St. Augustine would be published as a sequel to Christianity and Classical Culture. He was also doing research on historian Carl Becker and Greek jurisprudence. Early in his career, he wrote a report for the National Council of Education on the teaching of history and civics in Canadian schools (April 1923). He later teamed up with University of Toronto Librarian W.S. Wallace, to write a school textbook entitled This Canada of Ours, an Introduction to Canadian Civics. (Oxford University Press, 1924). Records relating to all of these works can be found in Series 3 and 4.

There were other aspects of his life that are, to a limited degree, documented in these records. As noted above, he was dean of University College residence – the first to hold this position since 1899. His appointment corresponded with the opening of the men’s commons room in University College. Some routine correspondence relating to this can be found in Series 1. Cochrane’s role as a teacher is somewhat better covered with several series of lecture notes as well as annotated exams. There are however no records relating to his administration of the Department of Ancient History while he chaired the department after 1929.

While there are no records relating to his participation in the 1st World War, two aspects of his life during the 2nd World War are fairly well documented. In Series 1, there is extensive correspondence and notes relating to the Oxford evacuees, especially regarding the children of family friend Kenneth Bell and more notably the two Clark children who stayed with the Cochranes. As well, there are extensive records documenting his position as advisor to the Minister of Justice on the committee hearing appeals from prisoners interned under the Defence of Canada Regulations, including case files on several notable communists such as Tim Buck, J B. Salsberg, Jacob Penner, Leslie Morris, Fred Rose, Bill Kashtin and Stanley Ryerson. Cochrane also co-authored a Memorandum on the Communist Party in Canada for the Ministry of Justice that discusses whether the Communist Party should continue to be illegal in view of the fact that the USSR was by now an ally. These records are found in Series 6.

Finally, some family photographs have been kept and mainly document Cochrane’s two children, Mary Ann and Hugh David Cochrane.

Hastings (John E. F.) Family fonds

Records of two generations of the Hastings family, relating primarily to Elgin Rowland and Mary Ferguson Hastings and their son, John Elgin Ferguson Hastings. Included are course notes and laboratory notes, certificates and photographs documenting Elgin Hastings’ years (1908-1913) as a medical student at the University of Toronto, and correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to his wife’s life and activities. Most of the records document the activities of John Hastings as a student, especially the University of Toronto Schools and medicine (1945-1954) at the University of Toronto; his career as a professor of and administrator in public health administration at the University of Toronto (1956-1993), and as a advisor and consultant on community and public health issues from the local to international levels. The correspondence includes many letters from contacts in India and Japan; there are also research materials, manuscripts of articles, books and addresses, conference files; studies, including the Royal Commission on Health Services, the Community Health Centre project, the Sault Ste. Marie study and the Canadian Caribbean Health Initiative; and files on his involvement with Canadian Council of Churches projects and with the United Church of Canada. Included are photographs, an audiotape, two videos, and a number of artifacts.

A1983-0008: Live audio recordings of a conference held in October 1980 by the surviving members of the League for Social Reconstruction. This was a unique event including recollections by such people as King Gordon, Frank Scott, Eric Havelock, Graham Spry, Irene Spry, J.F. Parkinson, Kenneth McNaught and David Lewis.

The James T. Lemon fonds documents most aspects of Prof. Lemon’s life, in terms of both private and professional experiences. Records in Series 1 (Biographical), Series 14 (Christian Youth Groups) and Series 15 (Family Paper) give some overview of Prof. Lemon’s early life and family background. Records in Series 15 may be helpful to genealogical researchers interested in families who settled around West Lorne in south western Ontario.

Biographical profiles, correspondence, papers, addresses, manuscripts, reviews and grant files in Series 1 through Series 6 document most aspects as his career as a urban historical geographer. In addition, Series 12, documents much of his involvement with professional associations as well as community groups. His activities in the political arena as an active New Democrat are also documented in Series 13.

Course lectures and outlines, student papers, references, and correspondence found in Series 7 through Series 10 document his role as a teacher. Series 10 and 11 also give some evidence to his various administrative roles within the University. Of particular note are the early accessions of student term papers found in Series 7, Teaching. These cover a range of historical topics relating mainly to Toronto and, as secondary source material, may be of interest to those researching the urban history of Toronto.

This accession of the Blake Wrong Family Fonds consists mainly of family portraits, small photographs and one album. Included are portraits of Samuel and Rebecca Blake, Gerald, Margaret, Francis and Vershoyle Blake as well as Harold, Murray and Hume Wrong.

There is also some memorabilia belonging to various members of the Wrong and Blake families including Harold Wrong, Murray Wrong and Gerald Blake. There are items relating to Ridley College (1906, 1923), to the Kappa Alpha Society (1911-1916), as well as two booklets of poems: 1) Verses by Harold Wrong, and 2) By-Products 1911-1919 by Murray Wrong. As well, there are there two pieces of correspondence written by Gerald Blake from the front during World War I.

This fonds consists of a mix of documents and records pertaining to Easterbrook’s various professional roles, including those of teacher, researcher, and administrator. Of the three accessions that make up the fonds, B1975-0030 consists of correspondence with Harold Innis as well as assorted notes, including those taken from discussions with Innis during his final months; B1979-0039 consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, and manuscripts documenting Easterbrook’s roles as professor and head of the Department of Political Economy; while B1985-0011 consists of textual and graphic records documenting Easterbrook’s teaching activities and term as Chairman of the Department of Political Economy. There is thus considerable overlap between the aforementioned accessions. The organization of the fonds into series consequently reflects this overlap such that several accessions often appear in a single series.

Four chronologically ordered volumes relating to research carried out by Professor George F Wright on Second World War defence projects for the federal government of Canada through the National Research Council of Canada.

The first volume is Defence Project CE-12 and encompassses the dates December, 1939 to June, 1942. It contains a series of chemical research reports related to wartime defence initiatives. The following three volumes consists of reports to ACE (Associate Commitee on Explosives) covering the dates August 1944 to June 1945. They contain reports, previously marked 'secret' relating to wartime research and experimentation on the explosive properties of compounds. Some of the reports contain photographs tipped in; there is also a file of loose photographs and correspondence.
