Family Support Workers of Ontario - June 3, 1992

File consists of correspondence, with Stephen Bransfield, and other material regarding Nouwen's presentation at the Family Support Workers of Ontario Conference at the Hockley Valley Conference Centre, Orangeville, Ontario. Nouwen's presentation focused on L'Arche communities. Nouwen was joined in his presentation by three others members of L'Arche Daybreak. Includes a program from the conference.

York Central Hospital - June 3, 1992

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's address to clergy and medical personnel at York Central Hospital. The theme of the address was "Caring for the Whole Person: the Relationship between Spirituality and Medical Care." Includes outline entitled "Care for the Whole Person," notes in Nouwen's hand entitled "Spirituality of the Caregiver," and a news clipping on the death of Tony Perkins. Also includes a handwritten manuscript in Dutch by Nouwen and a draft history of L'Arche in German, not by Nouwen.

Draft book review of We drink from our own wells

File consists of a draft typescript of a book review by Nouwen of Gustavo GutiƩrrez's, "We Drink from Our Own Wells: The Spiritual Journey of a People" (Centro de Estudios y Publicaciones, 1984), for which Nouwen also wrote the Prologue. The draft review refers to a working title, "Drinking from Your Own Well". It also contains minor corrections made in an unknown hand.

Photographs of Nouwen and others during Easter

File consists of seven photographs of Nouwen, wearing clerical robes, and other L'Arche Daybreak community members during the Profession of Faith and Confirmation Easter service; among them include Sr. Sue Mosteller, Natasha Stevens, Wendy Lywood and Carl MacMillan.

The theme was 'Support and Recognition for Persons Dealing with HIV and Special Acknowledgement of their Caregivers.' Includes correspondence from people wishing to see Nouwen while he is in the San Francisco area, a map of California, and a brochure for Kairos. Also includes printed material from Michael Christensen and Rebecca Laird.

File consists of letters from June E. Hagan, Nouwen's administrative assistant, most regarding incoming correspondence for Nouwen, as she was managing his mail while he was in Latin America, as well as letters to Hagan from Marlene Brask, and Nouwen himself.

Crystal Cathedral - June 21, 1992

File consists of correspondence, mainly with Robert Sculler and Gretchen Penner, and other material regarding Nouwen's appearance on the Hour of Power with Robert Schuller. Three consecutive services were taped on June 21st, Nouwen spoke on "Being the Beloved," "Becoming the Beloved," and "The Disciplines of the Beloved." Includes travel itinerary, brochures, flyers, and TV ratings. Includes many letters from people commenting on Nouwen's appearance on the Hour of Power. A letter from Gretchen Penner states that she sent Nouwen three videos, one copy of each Hour of Power. Also includes some correspondence in Dutch, possibly from the Hour of Power in Holland.

Chautauqua, New York - July 13 - 17, 1992

File consists of correspondence, mainly with Penny Austin, and other material regarding Nouwen giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, New York. Nouwen was planning to bring two members of Daybreak with him. Nouwen became ill and was unable to give his lecture "The Life of the Beloved, in his place Sue Mosteller spoke on spiritual life and ministry to the physically and mentally handicapped. Includes flyers, brochures, pamphlets, postcards, forms, and information sheets from the Chautauqua Institute.

Draft of The suffering Christ

File consists of galley proofs of the article, "The Suffering Christ: Peacemaking across the Americas". Draft contains annotations and corrections in Nouwen's hand and others.

File consists of correspondence from Joan Nesser arranging a retreat at Daybreak. Annotations on a letter indicate the retreat was set for July 26th to August 2nd at the Dayspring. Notes in Nouwen's hand are on the back of one of the letters entitled "The Lord is Risen."

Writing in England - July 31 - August 30, 1992

File consists of Nouwen's handwritten notes entitled "What is at risk?" regarding possible book on the circus (trapeze). Includes travel itinerary for the month of August, a news clipping in Dutch, and a letter from Morag Reeve, editor, requesting to meet with Nouwen while he is in London, England.

Greenbelt Art Festival - August 28-29, 1992

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's participation at the 1992 Greenbelt Arts Festival in Northampton, England. Nouwen gave three seminars entitled "Being the Beloved," "The Life of the Beloved," and "The Discipline of the Beloved.' Includes Greenbelt Art Festival programs and daily event guide from 1991 and 1992. Includes a brochure, information sheets, forms, maps, and directions. Also includes newspaper article about Nouwen at the festival and a photograph of Nouwen bowing his head in prayer as he prepared for his talk.

File consists of a memorandum from Connie Ellis regarding a meeting with Sue Tennant about doing a feasibility study on building a new interfaith seminary in Toronto.

File consists of letters from George Herrick, typed letters from Nouwen regarding the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Nouwen's Ordination, as well as three handpressed books by Herrick, "I Am Cleopas" and "Me and the Pog" and "Wings on the Wind" (Lostbrook Letters).

Father Damian Delaney - Retreat - September 14, 1992

File consists of correspondence with Damian Delaney, regarding coming to L'Arche Daybreak for a retreat. Annotations on a letter by Elizabeth Buckley indicate the retreat was set for September 14th at the Dayspring.

Letter from Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC

File consists of two copies of the Declaration on Prevention of Nuclear War, presented to Pope John Paul II in September 1982. This file was annotated "Nuclear War" but was amended as "Hesburgh".

Photographs of unknown location

File consists of 44 slides featuring photographs taken in an unknown location, perhaps somewhere in the Caribbean, such as Haiti. There are palm trees visible in some photographs, and other trees. There are several photographs of small children, as well as some that appear to be taken inside a school (P4030-P4031). There are images of huts and people standing near to these huts. There are also some photographs of white priests in white robes, perhaps at a Mission building. Several photographs feature the outside of a white cement-block church. There are other white adults in photographs, perhaps other Mission workers. Some photographs were taken in a city, some featuring a marketplace, and some featuring city streets and a wall along a bay. An older man and woman are in some of the photographs in different locations, but they are unidentified.

File consists of page 11 of Album 14. There are four photographs on the page [P8496, P8497, P8498, P8499]. Taken on February 3, 1964 at the Hooge Hoenderberg, Henri Nouwen's friends are seen seen giving a speech, conversing, drinking and watching the band, the Boy Raaymakers, play at a party in celebration of him completing his psychology doctoral exam. The annotation on the page reads: "Boy Raaymakers en zijn combo".

File consists of page 11 of Album 10. There are eight photographs on the page [P7630, P7631, P7632, P7633, P7634, P7635, P7636, P7637]. Taken after a graduation ceremony, unidentified graduates of the Yale Divinity School are seen outside, celebrating in black and red caps and gowns. Also included are shots of a crowd, including Registrar Detra MacDougall [P7635] (holding envelope), cheering on the graduates.

Drafts of Out of solitude

File consists of a typescript of "Three Meditations on the Christian Life", the working title for an early version of "Out of Solitude". File also includes typescripts of its three chapters, 'Out of Solitude' (two copies), 'With Care', and 'In Expectation'. These were originally lectures presented at Battell Chapel, United Church of Christ, Yale University, in 1973. Themes include care, expectation, loneliness, patience, action, usefulness, self-esteem, self-destruction, depression, self-rejection, vulnerability, inner freedom, cure, joy and sadness.
