Fellows of Victoria College

Fellows of Victoria College were appointed from the larger U. of T. community to expand the academic and cultural life of the College. They participated in ways both formal (e.g. public lectures) and informal (e.g. presence in Senior Common Room), and received an honorarium, High Table privileges and office space on campus. Junior Fellows were senior graduate students who provided course and career counseling as well as some tutoring to Vic students.

Sub-series consists of files on the nomination, appointment and remuneration of Fellows; changes in the appointment of Fellows after 1982; and a single file on the selection of Junior Fellows.

General subject/correspondence files

Sub-series consists of files relating to a variety of subjects/correspondents such as studies/surveys, scholarships/awards, installations (Principal's), grants/funding, lectures, senior administrators, Victoria University committees and reunion dinners as well as subject files on academic courses, enrollment programming and departments.

General papers

Sub-series consists of files containing predominantly correspondence, which reflects Dr. Love’s various activities as part of the Victoria University /University of Toronto community, including interaction with the administration, the English Department, the Writer-in-Residence program and the Margaret Ray and Florence Pratt Award committee.

Dependent America? (2011)

Consists of correspondence, notes, drafts, and research material for the third book in a three-volume series dealing with the impact of globalization and systems of continental governance on Canada, Dependent America? How Canada and Mexico Construct U.S. Power (Woodrow Wilson Center Press with University of Toronto Press, 2011). Included are conference and seminar papers, news articles written by Clarkson, as well as several student papers and research done for various topics in the book as part of the coursework for several courses taught by Clarkson including POL401/POL2228: The Dynamics of the Global Trading System, a Practical Workshop on the Hegemon-Periphery Relationship in North America, POL397: How Canada and Mexico Construct and/or Constrain US Power, Research Opportunity Course in North American Governance, and POL396: Research Opportunity Course.

Digital files from B2019-0003 consist of further correspondence, drafts and research materials; related SSHRC applications; and publisher and promotional materials.

Course POL418

This subseries consists of course material for POL418 Practical Politics. This new experimental course/workshop/seminar was created in response to an expressed student desire to relate political science directly with the real world of party politics. Clarkson was in charge of teaching the course for the first year in 1969-1970. That year, the course was titled POL418 Practical Politics, “Toronto Democracy 1969”. Some records also show the course title as POL418 Workshop in Canadian Politics: The Practical Politics Course: “Toronto Democracy 1969”. Records include lecture notes, course outlines, and some student papers. Also included are memos to students, including one from September 1969 in which Clarkson, a Liberal mayor candidate for the municipal election that year, asserted that his participation in the municipal election campaign did not change the essential nature of the course. Correspondence with students and with individuals involved in the municipal election, as well as a copy of a presentation prepared by Clarkson and titled “Metro Democracy: How Clearly was the Electoral Choice Transmitted” are also included.

Course POL2100

This subseries consists of course material for POL2100 Political Parties and Political Change. Clarkson taught this course in 1974-1975, and between 1979 and 1981. In 1979-1980, the course title was changed to POL2100 Government of Canada. As the core course in Canadian government, politics, and public administration, it aimed at providing an overview in the area at an advanced level. Records include lecture notes, course outlines, examination templates, and correspondence, including correspondence specifically relating to teaching assistantships for the course. Also included is material from the course when taught by Professor Freda Hawkins in 1975-1976. Clarkson was in charge of correcting take-home examinations from Section C on Political Parties for Professor Hawkins.

Subseries consists of music written by other composers and either collected by Derek Holman for reference purposes, or sent to Holman as a gift and/or for his feedback.

Awards and certificates

Subseries consists of certificates and related documents, including photographs and correspondence, for awards and degrees that Derek Holman received, including his Doctor of Music from the University of London, honorary Doctor of Sacred Letters from the University of Trinity College, Order of Canada, and Canadian citizenship.

Early Russian recordings

Subseries contains correspondence, research notes, and discographies on various early Russian singers and recordings, predominantly from before the Russian Revolution. John Stratton had a particular interest in these recordings and sponsored various re-releases through Historic Masters.

Gifted photographs

Subseries consists of photographs autographed by the subject and inscribed to John Stratton from contemporary vocalists and acquaintances of Stratton.
