The theme for the series was "Spirituality in a Dark Age." Nouwen was originally scheduled to give his talk on January 10th [ but it was moved to February 28th].

St. Benedict Center - July 5-11, 1987

File consists of correspondence and other material related to a retreat Nouwen led with Parker and Sally Palmer entitled "Doing Theology of the Heart" at the St. Benedict Center. Includes participant list, prayers, photocopies of songs sung, as well as some handwritten prayers by Nouwen. Letters of evaluation sent to the Parkers are also included.

Toronto Conference of United Church of Canada - May 29-31, 1987

File consists of correspondence and other material from Rev. Kenneth R. Gallinger, regarding Nouwen's and other members of Daybreak's participation in the Toronto Conference of the United Church of Canada, in Orillia May 29-32, 1987. Includes a program and Nouwen's handwritten notes outlining the theme, and notes from planning committee meetings. The three themes of Daybreak's presentations were The Covenant Journey, The Covenant Community, and The Covenant Network. Also includes a letter from Nouwen to Gallinger confirming plans.

File consists of two rough drafts and one final draft of an article by Nouwen entitled, "Anton T. Boisen and the Case Method in Theological Education". Draft 3 is the earlier draft and contains edits by Nouwen. Draft 2 contains edits by an unknown person.

File consists of correspondence, flight arrangements, preparatory and other material related to Nouwen's participation at the L'Arche International Federation meeting in Rome, May 6-15, 1987. Includes notes in Nouwen's hand of a brief outline, partially in French, for a talk he gave at the meeting on May 13th entitled "The Meaning of Our Daily Life in Front of the Struggles of the World." Also includes schedules, agendas, a program, lists of participants, L'Arche International Report 1987, and L'Arche Federation Meeting Financial Report 1987. Some documents are in French.

Includes notes in Nouwen's hand for his talk on "Following Jesus."

Drafts of selected articles

File consists of draft manuscripts and typescripts of selected articles by Nouwen. Folder (1) contains a bound volume of six articles including 'Professionalism, Manipulation and Contemplation in the Ministry' (typescript); 'Care' (manuscript); 'Solitude' (typescript); 'Aging and Ministry' (typescript); 'Anton T. Boisen and the Case Method in Theological Education' (typescript), and 'Case-recording in Pastoral Education'. Nouwen had these articles bound while at the University of Notre Dame. Folder (2) contains typescript copies of 'Professionalism, Manipulation and Contemplation in the Ministry' and 'Case-recording in Pastoral Education'.
