Frances Dafoe Papers

Collection includes original colour sketches of costume designs for shows designed by Frances Dafoe: 1. West Side Story for Banff Festival of the Arts, 1984. '27 mounted and 4 rough. Also included - copy of the playbill, the script and photostats with instructions to the cutters' 2. Kiss Me Kate for Banff Festival of the Arts, 1985. '27 colour mounted plus 18 black and white for a special scene using only black and white copies of the original sketches. There are also 7 quick colour drawings for tights.' 3. The Niagara Falls Museum Papers

Collection consists of archival material related to the museum and its proprietors, including correspondence and promotional material, as well as items documenting Sidney Barnett’s involvement in the militia and Fenian Raids (1866). The collection also includes books and ephemera pertaining to the Niagara Falls tourist industry, such as guidebooks, broadsides, flyers, tickets and certificates. The collection also contains 124 photographs, including glass stereoviews, card stereoviews, ambrotypes, cabinet cards, and albumen photographs, dating from 1850s to the 1890s, with 18 produced by the museum itself.

Bascom H. Darwin Collection of Photographs

The collection consists of approximately 492 photographs, approximately 170 negatives and 115 index cards. The photographs in this depict life in the Royal Military College, training exercises such as building a Flying Bridge and other construction and training work in Canada and England as well as some personal photographs of Mr. Darwin and his family and friends. All of the photographs in this collecton were taken between 1930 and 1945.

Box 1-5 contain black and white photographs mounted on index cards, some with negatives attached. Box 6 contains 115 alphabetical subject index cards, 54 loose photo duplicates and 129 loose negatives.

Collection consists of three cycles of original pen on paper drawings by Margaret Bloy Graham compiled into portfolio-style binders by the artist. The drawings in Look Out Browning: the British Poets Revisited and More Victoriana are illustrations for famous British poems selected from Palgrave’s Golden Treasury, a popular anthology of Victorian poetry originally published in 1861. The drawings are numbered and correspond to an accompanying list with excerpts from the poems illustrated, totaling thirty-six poems by twelve poets including Robert Browning, Percy B. Shelley and Alfred Tennyson, among others. The cycle Pictures with Morals features darkly comedic punishments for children who make mistakes like being too curious, sledding on Sunday, not reading the Bible daily, and trespassing.

Contains the personal and professional records of Robert Arnold Russel. This includes photographs of Russel and his family, information regarding his early life including schooling and university, family tree information and identifying documents such as baptism records and passports. The collection contains a comprehensive collection of Russel’s diaries and daytimers spanning from 1949 to his death in 2011. Professional records include materials pertaining to his early career in theatre, film and broadcasting, during the course of which he resided in France, England and Montreal. His career as an information professional and futurist is recorded extensively including his penning of the term “intersex” and “cybersex” in 1967 and his interview with Marshall McLuhan in 1962. As a futurist, Russel’s operated several businesses, most specifically, Orba Information (also called Orbafilm and Orba Inc), which operated between 1967 and 1993, which is archived in great detail, a smaller amount of information on later businesses including Rapid Response Inc., Toronto, Institute for Research on Public Policy and The Consortium for National Development is also available. Collection also contains drafts, proposals, budgets and storyboards surrounding Russel’s personal creative writing, including The Spark, a proposed television program and I am Haida, a proposed CD-ROM and game on Haida culture, and novels – The Petrans and Clone.

Includes material such as photographs and newspaper clippings related to her modeling career and her work as a fashion consultant (1952-1970). The collection covers Sutton Straus’ career as a journalist with the Toronto Telegram (1971), The Toronto Star (1972-1979, 1981-1992) and The Toronto Star (1979-1981, 1992). This includes correspondence from readers, co-workers and well-known politicians, entertainers and dignitaries, as well as photographs of Sutton Straus during the course of her work. The material also includes clippings of her columns, interviews and articles preserved by Sutton Straus, as well as three oversized scrapbooks containing clippings from her time at the Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Sun. First accession contains correspondence, drafts of speeches and writings, journals, scrapbooks, photographs, clippings and family papers.

Second accession contains 56 boxes and items. The documents consist of personal and business correspondence, articles and addresses, banking and legal documents, estate information, biography information, and other items. The correspondence relates to art and the National Gallery, De Grassi Point, geology, Japanese consul, The Champlain Society, the National Battlefields Commission, the Royal Colonial Institute, the Round Table, University College Alumnae Association Building Committee. There is a significant amount of correspondence from the Canadian Bank of Commerce, the University of Toronto, and the Royal Ontario Museum, and with many prominent individuals in Canada and worldwide as well as letters to Mary before and after they married and messages of condolence received by the family after the death of Sir Edmund Walker. Other documents in the collection relate to the Alexander, Buchan, and Morrow families; the Coronation of King George V and other special events; the Duke of Sutherland's Scheme (Imperial Colonization Corporation of Canada); the West Virginia Debt Settlement; and C. White Mortimer. The items are books, a lace handkerchief, a wooden drawer containing numerous calling cards, card index of pictures and art objects, a framed drawing of the coat of arms, Sir Edmund Walker's certificates and medal upon being admitted as a Knight of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, pieces of the fireplace from Long Garth, a silver vase, a silver bowl, a china plate with Walker crest and logo, and a fishing rod and net.

2000 Accession: Materials relating to the editing and publication of Descant, the literary journal edited by Karen Mulhallen.
