Poetry

Series consists of a typeset collection of Derek Healey's poetic output, including a preliminary introduction to the set, written by Healey upon compilation of the texts in 2023. The bulk of the poems were written in Maidenhead, England (1963-1968) and Brooklyn, New York (2004-present), when time permitted. Healey wrote very few poems in Guelph, Ontario and Eugene, Oregon, and wrote nothing in Victoria, British Columbia or Ruislip, England. Many of the texts were set to music. In 2004, Healey studied poetry at the Gotham Writers' Workshop in Manhattan with Mary Donnelly.

Scrap album

File consists of a scrapbook (1947-1969) of newspaper clippings, programs, reports, collected by Derek Healey. The scrapbook includes comments from Dr. Herbert Howells on Healey's Royal College of Music (RCM) reports, and the program from "The President's Concert" (November 7, 1957) at RCM for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who presented medals and prizes, including the Farrar Prize for Composition to Derek Healey. Healey selected a copy of the vocal score for Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw, op. 54 (Hawkes & Son (London) Ltd., 1957); the specially-bound score is also included in this file. The scrapbook also includes programs from Composers Concerts at RCM that Healey organized, often filling in for last-minute cancellations; programs and newspaper clippings from his time in Italy at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, where he studied with Boris Porena (1961-1963), and programs and newspaper clippings relating to the Cookham Arts Festival (1967) that Healey organized. A complete contents listing is included inside the front cover of the scrapbook.

Memorandum of agreement between Viktor Zuckerkandl and Princeton University Press for The Sense of Music

The memorandum of agreement outlines the terms agreed upon between Zuckerkandl and Princeton University Press. 1. Zuckerkandl grants exclusive rights to publish and 2. guarantees that he is the sole author of the work and the work does not infringe any copyright, contain any unlawful or libelous matter, and does not invade the privacy of any other individual. 3. The Press assumes all publishing and printing expenses. 4. Zuckerkandl agrees not to publish the same or similar material with any other publisher and 5-6. commits to deliver the entire manuscript and associated materials. 7. Both Zuckerkandl and the Press agree to full cooperation in the editing process, as well as in the event of 8. author’s alterations or editing errors. 9. Zuckerkandl agrees to revise subsequent editions and to supply additional material if necessary. 10. The Press provides insurance of materials to the amount provided by Zuckerkandl. 11. Zuckerkandl and the Press agree to a bi-annual royalty payment rate and schedule on U.S. and international sales. 12. Zuckerkandl grants exclusive sales and licensing rights to the Press. 13. Zuckerkandl is entitled to 10 free copies and discounted copies. 14. Zuckerkandl and the Press agree to the terms of termination of contract. 15. Zuckerkandl agrees to present the Press the first offer of publication on his next work. 16. Zuckerkandl and the Press agree to the terms of transfer or assignment of rights to heirs and/or others.

File contains correspondence, meeting minutes, and reports regarding a concert of music by contemporary Canadian composers at the Canadian Conference for the Arts (May 5, 1961), including letters from Ken Winters, Barbara Pentland, John Adaskin, Vida H. Academy Symphony Orchestra

Subseries contains recordings of Victor Feldbrill conducting the Academy Symphony Orchestra of the Vancouver Academy of Music (formerly the Community Music School of Greater Vancouver, founded in 1969). This orchestra gives three concerts a year with guest conductors at the Orpheum Theatre. Victor Feldbrill was a repeat conductor.

Early CBC activities

File contains scripts and correspondence regarding John Beckwith's early appearances on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio, including a show "Lois Marshall : an appreciation" (ca. 1954) and an episode of "Views the Shows" (William Krehm, CJBC, November 29, [1954]) on a concert by the Canadian League of Composers.

Promotional materials, correspondence, and notes for Music at Sharon weekends

File consists of programs, program notes, John Beckwith's notes, and related correspondence for the 1984 "Music at Sharon" series.

File also includes materials relating to the performance "Musical Toronto : A Concert Party" as part of the Toronto International Festival. Materials include the program, John Beckwith's notes, newspaper clippings of reviews, and correspondence. The complete program was recorded at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church (February 1984) in celebration of the Toronto sesquicentennial, and was performed lived at Roy Thomson Hall on June 20, 1984. Performers included Elmer Iseler Singers, conducted by Elmer Iseler, with Rosemarie Landry, soprano; Mark DuBois, tenor; an instrumental ensemble conducted by John Beckwith; and William Kilbourn, narration. File includes documents relating to both the recording and the live performance.

Oak Bay High School

File consists of an autographed yearbook and newspaper clippings relating to John Beckwith's high school (Oak Bay High School in Victoria, British Columbia) and a reunion of the graduating classes.

Sonata I, op. 10 : for organ

File consists of masters of the handwritten transparencies for the original version (1961) and copies of the master handwritten revised score (1986). "This demanding four movement sonata has rather heroic dimensions":

[Letter from Otto Schulmeister to Viktor Zuckerkandl, January 20, 1956]

Schulmeister explains to Zuckerkandl that they have decided to include the images from all essays in a single section of the publication and that Zuckerkandl’s requests cannot be met exactly. Schulmeister suggests that Zuckerkandl reconsider his selection of the images, keeping in mind the formatting decisions of the editors.
