Plowman Family Postcard Collection

Collection consists of 312 postcards received or collected by members of the Plowman family. The collection has been arranged as follows:

1.) Postcards addressed to Olive Plowman (178; 1903-1932, predominant, 1908 - 1919)
2.) Postcards addressed to Charles Plowman. (15 postcards)
3.) Postcards addressed to Samuel Plowman (9 postcards)
4.) Postcards addressed to Ellen Plowman (53 postcards)
5.) Postcards addressed to Charles and Ellen Plowman (21 postcards)
6.) Postcards addressed to the Plowman family (3 postcards)
7.) Unaddressed postcards (33 postcards)

The postcards have been arranged chronologically. Undated cards have been placed at the end of the sections. The majority of the postcards are addressed to either 120 MacPherson Avenue (Toronto) or 96 MacPherson Avenue (Toronto), while the remaining 11 postcards are addressed to various hotels, inns, sanatoriums, and homes in Buffalo (NY), Rochester (NY), Long Beach (CA), San Francisco (CA), Petaluma (CA), and San Benito [?] (CA).
The collection includes greeting cards for birthdays, Easter, Christmas, New Years, Halloween, St. Patrick's day, the 4th of July, Valentine's day, Mother's day, and Thanksgiving. The collection also includes popular novelty cards such as photographic portrait postcards or postcards decorated with glitter. Numerous postcards depict buildings and streetscapes, the aftermath of the San Fransisco earthquake of 1906, and advertisements for barbershops, department stores, and hotels.

André Antoine - letters

  • Typed letter from André Antoine to Madame Ancey, dated «21 Août 1916», on letterhead «28, Place Dauphine. Tél.: Gobelins 03-59». Cannot visit because of rehearsals. Is discovering cinema, which is probably a new art. His son [?] will soon be in the air force. Friends are loosing family members. Hope the Anceys will be back in Paris soon.
  • Typed letter from André Antoine to Madame Ancey, dated «Le 10 Avril 1931», on letterhead «28, Place Dauphine. Tél.: Odéon 03-59». Does not know if he will go to Camaret for the summer; his health is not so good. His sons are working, and their presence would have brought him to Camaret. Apologizes for typing the letter, is almost incapable of writing.
  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to Madame Ancey, dated «mercredi 10 [1932, according to note pencilled in right hand corner], on letterhead «Golf Hotel. La Ciotat-Plage». Does not wish to go to Camaret, which is now a desert for him. Has given the house to his sons. Is simplifying his life. Has found a manuscript, which he hopes to bring to her. Sees Wolff every Sunday for lunch. Is feeling better. Hopes to be able to work for as long as possible. In October, will publish a Histoire du théâtre de 1870 à 1920 – several pages are devoted to Ancey. Concludes: «You are, I believe, the only woman I have esteemed and loved.»
  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to Madame Ancey, dated «31 août» [1932, according to note pencilled in left hand corner], on letterhead «Golf Hotel. La Ciotat-Plage». Does not have Faure’s address. Descaves is working and seems happy. Will be back in Paris in early September.
  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to Madame Ancey, dated «26 août 1936». Is in Sainte-Anne, and not in Camaret because there are too many memories in Camaret. Is with a nurse (after all, he is 78). The theater is probably dying, the cinema is the art of the future, and after all, why not. A new art is necessary for a new world. – If the generals succeed in Spain, France may be spared Bolshevism. Hopes to see her in Paris.
  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to ?, dated «Paris, le samedi 21 mai», on letterhead «Théâtre Antoine. Direction». Cannot hire Madame Marquet because his next season is put together already. Recommends her.

  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to Madame Georges Ancey [?], dated «21 août» [1936, according to note pencilled on right hand corner], on letterhead «Hotels St. James. 211 rue Saint-Honoré». Is in Brittany, back in Paris next Wednesday. Mentions the change of director at the Comédie [française?].
  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to Sylvie [?], n.d., on letterhead «28, Place Dauphine. Tél.: Gobelins 03-59». Has just seen the baron. She can assume that is it a done deal – 1st October, 1,000 fr per month.
  • Typed letter from André Antoine to Lucien Besnard [?], dated «Le 27 août 1928, Camaret-sur-Mer, Finistère». He read the adaptation Les amants de Parme. Cannot stage it in the new theatre, it is too risky because he does not know the public yet. Congratulates the author for his adaptation.
  • Typed letter from André Antoine to René de Chauffour [actor René Maupré], dated «Paris, le 28 juillet 1915», on letterhead «28, Place Dauphine. Tél.: Gobelins 03-59». Thanks Chauffour for his letter. Antoine’s son was wounded 10 days earlier. Antoine will try to have Chauffour’s wife work with him on a movie.
  • Typed letter from André Antoine to René de Chauffour, dated «Vendredi», on letterhead «28, Place Dauphine. Tél.: Gobelins 03-59». Shares various news, about his sons, common friends, life in Paris. Theaters are not open at night.
  • Typed letter from André Antoine to René de Chauffour, dated «Le 26 juin 1915», on letterhead «28, Place Dauphine. Tél.: Gobelins 03-59». Thanks him for his letter. Has seen Chauffour’s wife. Hopes that the war will be over in December.
  • Typed letter from André Antoine to René de Chauffour[?], dated «le 17 octobre 1938», on letterhead «Hotel d’Albany, 202, rue de Rivoli. Opéra 02-32 et 02-37». Regrets not seeing him the night before. Is glad to hear that he found work. Fauchois’s show was not a success.
  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to André-Paul Antoine [his son], dated «Jeudi». Found his letter the night before, at midnight. Hopes that Jean and André-Paul can come over for lunch.

Hopes his letter will reach André-Paul before his departure. Is in Camaret, will go back to Paris very soon. Gives news about friends and family.
  • Autograph letter from André Antoine to André-Paul Antoine, dated «Mercredi 17 février» [1917?], on letterhead «Grand Hôtel d’Europe, Pétrograde, rue Michel». Is in Russia – welcomed warmly, but it is very far. Will have dinner with Russian generals. Hopes all is well for André-Paul.

Actor René Maupré (René de Chauffour)

-Press clippings (221 pages) following the career of actor René Maupré – clippings ranging from 1904-1930 approx. (many clippings are not dated) – some clippings with photographs – great variety of important French newspapers: L’Humanité, Le Matin, La Petite République, L’Aurore, Le Monde illustré, Le Figaro, etc. – clippings about the Théâtre Antoine (Maupré was one of its stars) – some playbills from the Théâtre Antoine – some clippings from American and English newspapers (from p. 145) and some from Italian newspapers (p. 192 sq.) – a very interesting article by Maupré himself (1920?) on the future of cinema as a new art for the “masses” (p. 177).

These files consist of photocopies of letters written amongst Zola’s immediate family: Alexandrine Zola,
Jeanne Rozerot, Denise Émile-Zola (previously Rozerot), Jacques Émile-Zola (previously Rozerot) and
eventually Denise’s husband Maurice Le Blond and Jacques’ wife Marguerite Émile-Zola. The files within are
arranged chronologically, starting in 1906 and continuing through to 1924, including undated letters. There is
no clear indication as to why these letters have been compiled and preserved, as they could not have provided
context for the annotations in the published volumes (as they were all written after Zola’s death); however, it is
possible that these letters were collected to document the lives of Zola’s children, who would eventually have a
great impact on the development of the project because the children of Denise and Jacques provided the
primary and foremost source of letters.

Baker appreciates Guinon’s plays and Guinon and Baker will meet to discuss. Guinon would be delighted to introduce Antoine to Baker. Is Antoine free?
  • Autograph bristol card from Albert Guinon to Antoine, dated «mercredi matin». Will not be able to arrange a meeting between Antoine and Mr. Baker for that evening. Will try for another day.
