Publications

This series consists of manuscripts, correspondence, research notes relating to published articles and chapters in books written alone or in collaboration with colleagues. Arrangement is chronologically by date of publication, although contents of file may be earlier.

The bibliographic data in the file list has been copied directly from Dr. McCulloch’s curriculum vitae and additions have been made where warranted.

Research

This series contains records mainly relating to experiments undertaken by Dr. McCulloch and his research team. The alpha experiments are CFU repression experiments, and the related AB experiments are very early repression studies on the definition of the phenomenon. The AB, FAB experiments conduct further studies on immunology with an emphasis on early cellular immunology, while the “current experiments 609” mark the beginning of cellular immunology experiments at the University of Toronto. The D series consists of early radiobiological experiments. Radiology and the beginnings of studies of the heterogenetic model leads to the SC model. The SC series contains Connie Eaves' studies on repression, while the SC, D and E series contains important early experiments. The VV84-129 experiments compare the culture results that lead to the development of new technology.

The DII experiments study multiple transplants and the effects of same. The F1-F45 experiments contain Edith Russell's compilations. The L1-37 experiments study the effect of endotoxins, etc. on the spontaneous growth of colonies after radiation. The N1 and N2 series contain the earliest cell culture experiments. The NA series is comprised of early cell cycle experiments and the PF experiments conduct further studies in cell separation. The PG experiments study cell separation using propylyne glycol.

Professional organizations: personal

This series contains files documenting Dr. McCulloch’s participation in various organizations mainly relating to the medical field. His participation included general membership, attendance at conferences, reviewer and referee of articles for scholarly journals, committee membership, among other activities. Among the organizations represented in this series are American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Hematology, Atomic Energy of Canada’s Research and Development Advisory Panel ,the journal Clinics in Hematology, Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, Ontario Medical Association, Royal Society of Canada, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Toronto Blood Club, the Japan Prize and the Royal Society.

Professional organizations: general

Dr. McCulloch was involved with a number of Canadian, American and other international professional organizations. This series contains files mainly dealing with his involvement with the AIDS Steering Committee of the Royal Society of Canada. Other organizations include American Association for Cancer Research, Canadian Institute of Academic Medicine, International Society for Experimental Hematology, the Japan Prize, and the Royal Society.

Files include correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports, etc.

University of Toronto: personal

As a member of the faculty of the University of Toronto, Dr.McCulloch regularly lectured to students in the Department and Faculty of Medicine. He also held a number of administrative appointments in the School of Graduate Studies, as well as serving on various University committees. Included in this series are records relating to his appointment as University Professor in 1982, as Assistant Dean, School of Graduate Studies, lecture notes for Courses in haematology, biology and medical ethics and other teaching materials, as well as personal correspondence with University of Toronto officials.

University of Toronto: administration

This series documents Dr. McCulloch’s various administrative activities as faculty member of the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Medicine, as well as at the senior administrative with the School of Graduate Studies, Office of Research Administration, and Faculty of Arts and Science. Includes correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings and other records relating to promotions, research, dissertations, courses, etc.

Correspondence: general

These files concentrate on the professional activities of Dr. McCulloch and his colleagues and often contain information about appointments and grant applications. Includes correspondence, curriculum vitae, occasional letters of reference, copies of research papers and offprints of articles, and miscellaneous material.

Administrative files: general

This series contains more files relating to Dr. McCulloch’s work with various professional and scholarly organizations. Includes referee reports on fellowships and other grant applications, correspondence, minutes of meetings, etc.

Administrative files: "Dead files"

This series contains files relating to studies and other activities for mainly government agencies of the Ontario provincial government, and the Canadian federal government as well as the National Institutes of Health in the United States. Canadian government bodies include the Department of National Defence, Department of National Health, and the National Cancer Institute of Canada, to name a few. For Ontario, files concern the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital, and the Ontario Council of Health.

Editorial Boards/Referee for scientific journals

Dr. McCulloch was a member of editorial boards at a number of scholarly journals including Blood, Blood Cells, Journal of Cellular Physiology, Cancer Surveys, among others. This series contains records documenting these activities as well as his work as a referee for other scholarly journals.

Teaching

This series contains lectures for many of the courses Prof. McIlwraith taught, focused on his particular area of expertise of historical geography . Reading lists, course outlines, term tests and exams have also been included. Arranged by course number as listed in Appendix 1.

Field Trips

This series documents field trips taken and organized by Prof. McIlwraith beginning in 1963 while still a geography student at the University of Toronto. Most of the files however document field trips that were organized and led by Prof. McIlwraith as part of the Erindale College Field Studies Courses - GGR 301 and GGR 319.

Many of the field trips required students to undertake oral histories in various Ontario Townships. Files include correspondence, memos, notes, forms, photographs and logistical information handed to students. Tapes and transcripts relating to these Field Trips have been deposited in local archives.

Public Lectures and Talks

Throughout his career, Prof. McIlwraith was connected to many conservation groups and historical associations. This series contains lecture notes, typescripts, correspondence and invitations documenting talks given to these various groups.

Topics relate mainly to various aspects of the historical geography of Ontario. For example, Prof. McIlwraith attended quite a few conferences of the Mississauga Local Architecture Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) where he was asked to speak. Other groups include the Ontario Genealogical Association, Community Heritage Ontario, Streetsville Historical Society, North York Historical Society, Canadian Association of Geographers to list but a few.

Also included is documentation on a series of lectures on the historical geography of Canada he gave for the American Canadian Caribbean Cruise Line 2000.

Tenure Documentation

This series contains two sets of documentation. The first compiled in 1976 when Prof. McIlwraith was applying for promotion to Assistant Professor. This documentation includes course files as described in Series 1 that complete this series for the years prior to 1976. Also included are copies of some of his early papers, reviews and talks often accompanied by an explanatory note meant to put the work in context to his entire output.

The second set of documentation is made up entirely of course related material, again with explanatory notes that most often fill the gap of similar course related files found in Series 1. This binder was amassed as part of the tenure review process to full professor in 1997.

Publications

This series documents only one of Prof. McIlwraith’s publications. It is a 1986 annotated version of what was later published as "Looking for Old Ontario" in 1997.

Heritage Associations

Records in this series document Prof. McIlwraith active involvement in various conservation groups or initiatives. It includes records relating to his time on the Ministry of Culture, Conservation Review Board of which he was a member and vice chair. Drawing on his academic expertise, he often prepared reports for the Board on properties under review. As a Board member he also acted as one the adjudicators for cases brought before the Board. Other committees documented here are the Cultural Policy Advisory Committee for the Mississauga Arts Council, Mississauga Local Architecture Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC), and the Erindale College Plaque Committee.

Files contain reports, memos, correspondence and, in some cases, hand drawn maps and photographs.

Personal and biographical

Series consist of records documenting McIlwraith’s personal life and includes certificates from the Washington Academy of Sciences and other organizations, correspondence, and a will.

Unpublished Manuscripts (Cambridge University)

Series consists of unpublished manuscripts written by McIlwraith during his time at Cambridge University. Titles focus on various African traditions and include The Influence of Egypt on African Death Ceremonies and On the Bola in Central Africa.

Series consists of unpublished manuscripts written by McIlwraith during his time at the University of Toronto. Included are manuscripts tied to his research on the Nuxalk Nation, as well as titles such as the Disposal of the Dead in the Islands of the South Pacific and The History of Anthropology in Canada.

Publications

Series consists of published articles and obituaries written by McIlwraith. Articles cover various areas of anthropology and ethnology, and include titles such as Among British Columbia Indians, and Certain Beliefs of the Bella Coola Indians Concerning Animals. For the articles that are not listed by title, see Appendix B. This series excludes book reviews which are contained in Series 15.

Book Reviews

Series consists of published book reviews written by McIlwaith. These include Songs of the Copper Eskimos, by Helen H. Roberts and Diamond Jenness, and The American Indian, by Hyatt Verrill”. For articles that are not listed by title, see Appendix B.

Collected Articles and Manuscripts

Series consists of published articles collected by T. F. McIlwraith, however not authored by him. These articles include a review of his book Bella Coola Indians by Andre Gschaedler. For the articles that are not listed by title, see Appendix B.

"The Bella Coola Indians"

Series consists of records related to McIlwraith’s research and writing for his book The Bella Coola Indians, published in 1948. Material includes multiple versions of the book’s manuscript, McIlwraith’s field notes, photographs taken and collected, as well as vocabulary cards and printing plates.

Maps

Series consists of maps collected and referenced by McIlwraith in both his education and research. Maps in this series include annotated maps of Africa, Union Steamship Company maps, Blueprints from Canadian Pacific Railway, and maps identifying locations of Indigenous communities in Canada.

Artwork, photographs, and artifact

Series consists of artwork, photographs, printing plates, and an artifact collected by McIlwraith. Material covers a range of subjects and media types. Photographs include images of archaeological digs and sites, collected images such as a cabinet card of a meeting of the Six Nation Chiefs (August 1871) and images of artifacts, as well as postcards and informal snapshots. Series also includes artwork: Inuit drawings identified with the Canadian Northern Survey Department, a series of string figure drawings made by Abel Moses and Margaret Shanoush, as well as some additional collected drawings. Finally there is one carved stone artifact that remains unidentified as to its origins or purpose.

Correspondence (Chronological)

Series consists of professional correspondence received from various individuals, governmental bodies, and organizations. Also included is a letter addressed to James Loudon, President of University College, written 1890’s.

Correspondence (Author)

Series consists of correspondence from colleagues and other individuals relating to McIlwraith’s research, teaching, and publishing. Included within the series is correspondence from Margaret Mead, letters related to his research on the Nuxalk Nation, as well as communication regarding a C.B.C. radio script with which he was involved.

Correspondence (Administrative)

Series consists of correspondence related to McIlwraith’s administrative roles and includes his teaching activity. Material includes students records, recommendations, and exams; correspondence related to UofT’s Department of Anthropology, and between various departments at the university; as well as the former Department of Indian Affairs.

Subject Files

Series consists of subject files related to a broad range of organizations, groups, and activities. Material includes records related to the Royal Ontario Museum, the Canadian Social Sciences Research Council, various archaeological digs, UofT’s Department of Anthology field research, and African language cards.

Academic Lectures

Series consists of lectures delivered by McIlwraith while teaching at Cambridge University and the University of Toronto. Lectures cover a range of topics within anthropology and are directed to first-year students, third-year medical students, as well as including some graduate-level seminars.

Public Lectures and Addresses

Series consists of notes for public lectures and addresses given by McIlwraith. Included in the series is a listing of these lectures which have each been assigned a number. Subjects include cultural practices of indigenous communities in North America, particularly Ontario and British Columbia (predominantly unidentified), evolution, human biology, folk-lore, and anthropology as a field.

Bound volumes

The bound volumes described herein, including the scrapbooks, were compiled by Janet Cumming McLennan as a memorial to her brother, Sir John Cunningham McLennan, Professor of Physics at the University of Toronto. Many of the photographic reproductions of correspondence and other mementos were originally framed as part of a pictorial memorial of the family.
