Video recordings capture Venkatacharya’s presentations, many of these given at community centres and individuals’ homes. The topics of these talks generally focus on spiritual texts and understanding, though also include some academic presentations, including an event at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library. Other videos document the community involvement of both Prof. Venkatacharya and his wife, Vijaya. These include an event recognizing the contributions of Venkatacharya to the Hindu Institute of Learning, the organization’s fundraising initiatives, as well as Diwali celebrations at the AWIC Community and Social Services. Home recordings of family gatherings are also included in the material.

Manuscripts and publications

The section in Professor Fuss’ curriculum vitae that relates to his written works is divided into several sections: books and monographs, articles, published research reports, other publications, unpublished research reports, and unpublished papers. In this series, that system has not been followed – the arrangement is chronological by date of latest draft of the paper or date of publication. The files contain any combination of: covering correspondence, contracts, drafts of papers and final copies, offprints, reviews, and royalty payments.

Professor Fuss is the author of five books and monographs and over forty published articles; many are not represented in this series. For example, of his five published research reports, four of which focus on the demand for and cost of energy in manufacturing, and the last is on the regulation of telecommunications in Canada, none is present in this series. The other major gap is with his published articles; about 30 are missing. On the other hand, most of Professor Fuss’ “unpublished papers”, largely working papers series of the University of Toronto’s Department of Economics and its Institute for Policy Analysis, the National Bureau of Economic Research (USA) and the London (England) Business School; are present. His “unpublished research reports”, done for federal and provincial governments; are also well represented. Only one publication after 2001 is documented.

Professional activities

The files in this series relate almost wholly to the journal, Multiculturalism, which Professor McLeod founded in 1977 and of which he was the editor until the autumn of 1993. From 1984, to make the journal more inclusive, the editorial in each issue was translated into French and information about some of the writers and précis of the articles were written in French.

The files, which begin with his initial proposals in 1976, contain correspondence and notes regarding the founding of the journal, some financial records, a readership survey, correspondence and notes relating to manuscripts submitted, along with a selection of the latter (most of which were rejected, with reasons given). Although few were signed, Professor McLeod wrote all the editorials for Multiculturalism except for a few written by the associate editor or members of the editorial board [for example, IV, 1 (1980) and XIV, 2/3 (1992)] and by guest editors [such as II, 4 (1979), III, 4 (1980), IV, 2 (1980)]. Many of these editorials are found in Series 6: Manuscripts and publications.

There is also a file on Professor McLeod’s editing of the 2nd issue of the Journal of Ethno-Development (1992) and another on assessments of book manuscripts.

Meeting files were kept in binders, and in addition to agendas and summaries of discussions and observations, also include supporting documentation such as budget proposals, progress reports, proposals, agenda, memos, and research material. Background files were kept on particular individuals (academics, politicians and other figures) whose work was consulted as experts in the field. These files include correspondence and memos, meeting notes, news clippings, articles and other supporting research, as well as feedback on drafts and other work done by the Task Force. Some files include extensive discussion of the direction of the Task Force and the content of its findings.

Working files include summaries of trips to various communities, notes, news clippings, lists of participants at hearings, lists of researchers, speeches, records from the Steering and Editorial Committee, and discussions about the Task Force's relationship with the Institute of Intergovernmental Relations at Queen's University (then directed by Richard Simeon).
