Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapter 13"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Chapter 13 starts with Jesus "knowing" his hour had come, which is a look into the consciousness of Jesus. The whole gospel is about the transformation of consciousness. He is now going to cross over the cosmos and return to the Father. Now the great image is going to be love as he loved people to the very end. We should not be sentimental about this love. It is the offering of our live into the hands of God. Given to God for others.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapters 14 and 15"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The hour with the disciples had come and he washed their feet. He poured his own consciousness over them, the gift of his I Am. Then he commanded them to love one another as I have loved you. In Chapter 14 he goes into "let not your hearts be troubled". He has given them a vision both they can't live it yet. Now he is going to tell them the mystery of how obedience to that command will become possible.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapters 20 and 21"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I think it is important to say this. Christians don't believe in life "after" death because there is no "after" death. It's the wrong word. "After" is a time word. What Christians really believe is life through death.

Fred Blum, "The Wounded Healer"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Our theme is not an easy one. I want to approach the theme from 3 points of view: 1) the relationship to others; 2) the relationship to our self; and 3) the relationship to Christ. But these are not three separate dimensions. But look at them as three aspects of a unity, Aspects that are important to separate in terms of our understanding the dynamics, but not as being separate aspects of life.

Jean Vanier, "Evaluation after 3 weeks, Responsibility for Growth"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: What I would like to do is to say where I am at, at this time after our first three weeks. What I have picked up and what I have learnt. I will start at the beginning and share what I have lived and what worked well or not as well as we hoped.

Michael Hollings, Retreat 1: "God Loves Me - My Response", Retreat 2: "Come Away and Be Still"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Talk #1: I want to stress as we start on this Sunday evening the possibility of relaxing and being still in the course of these days. Let us be clear that this is for the Lord. Because it is for him, let us give ourselves to him. We just have to be ourselves and take ourselves as we are. Just be with he Lord, trusting the Lord is with us and trusting God's love for us. Talk #2: I want to introduce myself and then go on to some more particular thoughts. Whether you get something from me is immaterial because it is about the working of the Spirit. I believe that prayer is the foundation of my life now from which action comes.

Michael Hollings, Retreat 5: "What Interested Jesus in this World - People", Retreat 6: "Mary's Interests - The Father's Will and People"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Talk #5: We can't always understand the pattern of God in our lives. It's hard to tell what is progress and what is not. It's like climbing a mountain; to get to the next peak, you have to go down again first. The marvellous thing about the love of God is that he leaves us free, like the Prodigal Son. Let's now look at relationships of Jesus with some of the people he encountered. Talk #6: We have been talking about vocation and we have seen it first and foremost in the fact that God loves us and in his call to us, which we find in the still , small whisper of God. Today we will look at Mary because she shows us herself through the gospels, though we know little about her. But from Luke we can say she was a person of prayer who was ready to accept what the angel announced to her.

Michael Hollings, Retreat 9 and Retreat 10

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Talk #9: I want to talk today about community. Jesus goes out and chooses people. He goes beyond just picking fishermen. At L'Arche diversity is a challenge too in building small communities. It's not going to be easy, especially with our prejudices. Talk # 10: During this retreat I have been coming to you like St. Paul in 1Cor:2. "The only knowledge I claimed to have was about Jesus, and him as the crucified Christ." etc. That has been my goal that you rest a bit in the Lord , which I hope has been different for you from the rest of the Renewal. What I hope will continue for you in your life is what comes in Chapter 3 of Ephesians v. 16-21.

Jean Vanier, "Celebrations"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to give a lot of practical ideas about celebration. I really believe that at the heart of our communities is something about celebration. This is something for us to look at and deepen. For me, I have the feeling that all of us get busy and preoccupied. I believe the link between busyness and centering has to do with celebration. I am going to try to show what the factors of celebration are.

We are talking about you, but you are also here because you are walking with other people (and maybe groups. What have you learned about any insights to what it means to accompany another person? Side Two: Cindy Rose on sexuality: First part of the talk is missing. She then reads from St. Pauls letter tot he Romans. When you go to a 12 step program, everyone knows why you are there. When you come to LArche, it is often difficult to talk about this reality. The root of most disfunctionality is unlived grief.

All of us have been touched by the struggles in our families. We often don't know what to do. The struggle exists in our communities too. All the problems "out there" are in our communities too: authority, relationships, breakages, communication, questions of morality, religion etc. L'Arche is often a mess, so we live the reality of our world..

We can't so accompaniment well without faith. And we need to learn to hold things loosely. If not, get help from someone you trust. I am convinced you can't really do accompaniment well without prayer., which helps us to expand our hearts.

Side 1: Anne Way, “Shame and its Manifestations.” Side 2: Anne Way, “Claiming Ourselves.”

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at an Accompaniment Workshop for l'Arche assistants. The title of the conference was 'Accompaniment in l'Arche' and it was given in June 1990 in Calgary, AB.

We have identified four areas that we are going to speak about. It's important to remember that when people come, what we see is only the tip of the iceberg. We will start with shame and the manifestations of shame, based on the book of John Bradshaw. Side Two: Time to wrap up this morning. But if it dies it yields a large harvest..If anyone serves me, my Father will honor them." There is something important about our way of life that makes it essential that I announce our vision. I picked this reading because it is the essence of what we are called to live as L'Arche and L'Arche's call in the world. The parable about the grain is radically different from what our world tells us about where we will find life.
