Correspondence

Series includes outgoing professional correspondence from David C. Onley, incoming correspondence to David C. Onley, a folder of correspondence of Ruth Ann Onley, a folder of internal correspondence between employees of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and David C. Onley, incoming thank you cards and letters, and Christmas cards. Outgoing correspondence is mostly typed, with some exceptions of copies of handwritten letters. Series has been kept in original order; however, the archivist created the Internal Correspondence file from a folder of general correspondence.

Photographs

Series contains photographs documenting both the personal and professional life of Hershell Ezrin. Included are family photographs covering Ezrin’s childhood, young adulthood, and images of his own family in the 1990’s. Also included are images from Ezrin’s time in government, including some from the constitutional negotiations of 1981 and autographed portraits of former Ontario premier David Peterson. Also includes group portraits from awards ceremonies, including the 2002 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards.

Photographs

This series contains photographs documenting some of Peter Russell’s activities while participating mainly in academic and professional functions. Most are informal colour snapshots taken while at academic conferences and meetings, as well as in social situations with colleagues and students. Activities documented include trips to China, his class of students for POL 299Y, CBA meeting in Yellowknife and receiving awards and honorary degrees from University of Calgary and University of Toronto. Most photographs were either taken by or with Prof. Russell’s camera or sent to him by friends and colleagues. A small album of 17 photographs compiled by Prof. Russell documents his activities primarily in the 1980s.

2014.003 accrual

This fonds is divided into 5 series, divided by format. These are: Cinefilm, Video Materials, Audio Materials, Photographic Materials, Textual Records.

The first series, Cinefilm, contains original prints in both b&w and colour. It includes home movies, newsreels, as well as Spiess’s debut film Die Thomaner.

The second series, Video Materials, contains Digital Betacam cassettes. These include transfers of commercials, home movies, and Die Thomaner.

The third series, Audio Materials, includes soundtrack elements and radio commercials.

The fourth series, Photographic Materials includes behind the scenes photos of commercial shoots, family portraits, and glass negatives by Spiess’s father, Karl.

The fifth series, Textual Materials, includes papers relating to the formation of the first accrual of the Fritz Spiess archive. It also includes several periodicals that featured work by Spiess and technical literature about technologies of the day.

Manuscripts and publications

Ms Winearls has published widely on maps and map librarianship, beginning in 1967. This series consists of book reviews, articles, directories, exhibition catalogues, and chapters in books. A file in this series may contain draft of a manuscript, along with notes, covering correspondence, and reviews. The arrangement is chronological by date of publication.

Very few of Ms Winearls publications are missing from this series. The files relating to the writing of her major bibliographic work, Mapping Upper Canada, 1780-1867, are in Series 9. Files relating to Editing Early and Historical Atlases are found with the Conference on Editorial Problems files in Series 4.

A poster advertising the book, Ontario’s History in Maps (1984), which contains a cartobibliographic essay by Ms Winearls, “Sources for early maps in Ontario,” has been removed from B1998-0013/002(21) to /002(29).

The materials from B2022-0055 specifically pertain to Ms. Winearls’ articles and publications on Allan Brooks and his art. The records span from ca. 2001 to 2013 and include a publication proposal; research notes; an article in Rotunda; a draft paper and presentation notes for a Society for the History of Natural History (SHNH) International Conference; and a draft, an offprint, and correspondence related to an article for Scientia Canadensis. Also included are drafts of a catalogue of Allan Brooks artwork compiled by Ms. Winearls between 2001 – 2013 and four binders containing copies and photographs of Brooks’ original art and published illustrations to be used in conjunction with the catalogue. The contents of the binders have been removed and divided into files for preservation. Additional research files and background materials for the Allan Brooks Catalogue and articles are in Series 6.

2017 acquisition

The collection is made up of both audio/visual elements and textual. The majority of the audio visual portion of the collection is consumer tapes/disc and screening dubs of the films shown at the festival. Other files include press kits for select films. Series 7 is comprised of audio cassette recordings of festival workshops, titled “Independent Filmmaking”. The textual material offers a detailed look at how the festival operated, with application forms, tracking forms, correspondence, film promotional materials, actor resumes, expense sheets, booking venue information, workshop summaries and panelist information, grant writing, festival lists, and a wealth of other textual material. The last series is a collection of mostly festival posters.

Promotion and publicity documents

Series contains publicity and promotional materials for New Music Concerts (NMC), including programs and posters for individual performances, reviews of performances by NMC, and season brochures.

2016 acquisition

The collection comprises mostly of awards Leonard Rambeau received during his career, many being Gold and Platinum sales awards. There is also a small selection of press clippings that note himself, photographs, and yearbooks for Saint Mary’s University.

Personal and biographical

Series consists of textual records and graphic material documenting Ian Hacking’s personal life and career, with eight files related to the histories of both the Hacking and MacDougall families. Records include a passport, birth and marriage certificates, family snapshots, drawings by his children, as well as correspondence detailing financial contributions made to various charities and initiatives. Hacking’s professional and academic activity is reflected in written and photographic documentation of awards and honours received, including the Killam Prize for the Humanities, the Companion to the Order of Canada, and the Holberg International Memorial Prize. Also included in the series is an autobiographical document written by Hacking detailing the orientation of his research.

Digital files consist of files documenting his personal life and family [“BUSYNESS”], a folder of biographical information and curriculum vitae, further documentation about the Holberg Prize, and drafts of writings by Judith Baker titled “Trust and Commitment” and “Some Aspects of Reasons and Rationality”.

This series contains reports, contracts, correspondence, and lab data relating to the U of T Geochronology Lab’s commercial work. Subseries contains records from Derek Holman's career in education, conducting, composition, and performance, including his time with the Bishop Strachan School, Canadian Children's Opera Chorus, Church of St. Simon the Apostle, Concord Singers, Croydon Bach Society, Croydon Parish Church, Grace Church-on-the-Hill, Royal School of Church Music, St. Thomas' Church Choir, University of London, and the University of Toronto. The subseries includes correspondence, photographs, contracts and agreements, assorted writings, lecture notes, and programs.

Biographical

This series gives a good overview of Prof. Prentice’s career. It includes biographies, C.V.s, correspondence on appointments, newspaper clippings, honours received and photographs. Also included in this series is Alison Prentice’s own autobiographical writings and essays and transcripts of interviews she did for other academics regarding her career as an historian.

Fonds consists of correspondence, subject files, articles, teaching files, research notes and other records documenting the professional life and work of Prof. Richard Simeon. This includes records relating to Prof. Simeon’s PhD thesis and early career, teaching, departmental and curriculum planning at Queen’s University and the University of Toronto, peer reviews, conference attendance, articles and books, and evaluations of student performance.

The fonds also includes significant coverage of Prof. Simeon’s research projects and advisory work, including work for the Forum of Federations, as the research coordinator for the Macdonald Report on Canada’s future, as adviser to Ontario Premiers, and as participant in the Renewal of Canada conferences. Research files cover issues of ethnicity and democratic governance, Canada-U.S. relations, and bilingualism in voluntary associations. Records also document Prof. Simeon’s work relating to constitutional development in post-apartheid South Africa.

Fonds also contains a significant number of electronic files, some transferred directly from Prof. Simeon’s computer, and some on disks. These files relate the range of activities documented throughout the paper records. Files from his computer have been organized into the same 9 series as the paper files. Disks have been kept in their own series (Series 10).

Michael Marrus fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence, news clippings, reports, reviews, appointment calendars, and other records relating to Michael R. Marrus’s education, academic career, publishing record and university and community service. In particular, records document Prof. Marrus’s prestigious career as a historian of the Holocaust and an expert on the relationships between Christians and Jews (predominantly in France) during World War Two, and also document his involvement in ongoing concerns in the Jewish community, both pertaining to faith and Zionism. In particular, Prof. Marrus’s extensive publishing record is well-documented in contracts, reviews, and ongoing correspondence with readers and colleagues debating and exploring the assertions made in his work. The fonds also documents Prof. Marrus’s career as a student at Berkeley in the 1960s, and his return to student life with his pursuit of a Master of Studies in Law degree (MSL) from the University of Toronto in 2004. Some records also relate to Prof. Marrus’s teaching duties and appointments at the University of Toronto, as well as his service on the University’s Governing Council. One series documents his service on the International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission (1999-2001) and with the Friends of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon.
