Interview with John Guido

File consists of an interview with John Guido interviewed by Gabrielle Earnshaw at the Henri Nouwen Archives and Research Collection (Toronto, ON). Guido is the regional coordinator for L'Arche Ontario. Guido met Nouwen at a Faith and Sharing retreat at Catholic University (Washington, DC) in 1985 and subsequently lived with him at L'Arche Daybreak (Richmond Hill, ON). Guido remembers celebrating Easter with Nouwen, Nouwen with Adam Arnett, Nouwen driving, Nouwen's gestures and Nouwen's support to the assistants and core members of L'Arche Daybreak. Interview with Judith Kennedy

File consists of an interview with Judith Kennedy interviewed by Kathy Christie at the Gathering Place (Toronto, ON). Kennedy is a former actress and model and founder of Parents in Transition, a self help group for parents parenting troubled teens in Toronto, ON. Kennedy met Nouwen when he counseled her son, Michael Kennedy, and subsequently assisted her entire family when Michael died. Kennedy and her husband, Jim Kennedy, also helped to establish Dayspring at L'Arche Daybreak (Richmond Hill, ON). Themes present in Kennedy's interview include gardening, traveling, music, suicide, Vincent van Gogh, Nouwen's gestures and introduction to the Catholic faith. Interview with Sjeng Kremers

File consists of an interview with Sjeng Kremers interviewed by Peter Naus in The Netherlands. Kremers is a retired teacher in The Netherlands who had formerly taught Nouwen. The interview is transcribed and is available electronically and in hard copy. All transcriptions and audio recordings are in Dutch. Brief English comments from the interviewer are found in the file. They include: "I had chosen Sjeng because he directed some projects Henri was involved in as a student. I also hoped he would be able to provide a bit of a description of the Psychology program at the University of Nijmegen that was in place when Henri was a student and Sjeng a member of the faculty. I was not disappointed in my expectations. I believe Sjeng provided some valuable information about qualities of Henri that are relatively unknown".

Interview with Wendy Lywood

File consists of an interview with Wendy Lynwood interviewed by Gabrielle Earnshaw at Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto (Toronto, ON). Lynwood lives and works as an assistant at L'Arche Daybreak (Richmond Hill, ON) and teaches a course in Parish Leadership in the Ministry at Wycliffe College. Lynwood met Nouwen when she joined the L'Arche Daybreak community in 1992. Lynwood recalls Nouwen's relationship with children and core members, grief counselling for Connie Ellis and events at Dayspring chapel at L'Arche Daybreak. Themes present in Lynwood's interview include illness, FISH, community, the Eucharist, depression, Nouwen's legacy and the role of women in the church. Interview with Francis Martin

File consists of an interview with Francis Martin interviewed by Errol Stein (location unknown). Martin is a social worker living in Toronto, ON. Martin met Nouwen through Nathan Ball and subsequently developed a friendship with him. Martin recalls traveling to Algonquin Park (Algonquin Park, ON) with Nouwen and Nouwen's relationship with Nathan Ball. Themes present in Martin's interview include loneliness, Mennonite culture, the mother figure, the father figure, siblings, music, Nouwen as celebrity, Nouwen's grave and brokenness. Interview with Reverend Peter Ruggere

File consists of an interview with Reverend Peter Ruggere interviewed by Joe Vorstermans at Ruggere's office in San Diego, CA. Ruggere lives in San Ysidro, CA and is a Catholic Priest and the Mission Director for the Archdiocese of San Diego, CA. Ruggere met Nouwen when Nouwen traveled through Peru and Bolivia in 1981-82. Ruggere recalls discussing Dutch Catholicism with Nouwen, Nouwen's difficulty learning Spanish and performing Mass and Nouwen's interaction with the residents of Peru. Themes present in Ruggere's interview include Maryknoll priests, South America, Social Activism, Fidel Castro, 'Gracias!', language and Gustavo Gutierrez. Ruggere's business card is in the file. Interview with Errol Stein

File consists of an interview with Errol Stein interviewed by Sue Mosteller at the Greenhouse Loft, L'Arche Daybreak (Richmond Hill, ON). Stein is a retired insurance broker living in Toronto, ON. Stein first saw Nouwen on television as a guest on the 'Hour of Power' with Robert Schuler and was inspired to visit him at L'Arche Daybreak; Stein subsequently became involved with the community. Themes present in Stein's interview include abuse, South African Apartheid, education, racial issues, Gordie Henry, Nouwen's death and Nouwen's legacy. The file includes a letter to Stein from Joe Vorstermans thanking him for his participation and sending him copies of the audio cassettes for Stein's records.

Interview with Jack Stroh

File consists of an interview with Jack Stroh interviewed by Sue Mosteller at the Green House Loft, L'Arche Daybreak (Richmond Hill, ON). Stroh is a retired lawyer and lives in Erie, PA. Stroh met Nouwen through his wife, Sue Stroh president of the L'Arche Erie (Erie, PA); Nouwen counseled Stroh from 1991-96 and they become friends. Themes present in Stroh's interview include transitions, sports, alcoholism, introduction to the Catholic faith, Bill van Buren and praying with Nouwen. Notes from a chaplain

File consists of a newspaper clipping of an article entitled "Notes from a chaplain" by Rebecca Malcolm Schubert, Chaplain, St. Joseph Health Center. It was published in the Blade Empire a newspaper out of Concordia, Kansas. Schubert quotes from the Genesee Diary in a piece about the art of daily living.

Promotional material for the New England Nouwen Retreat

File consists of newsletters and brochures which advertise or contain advertisements for the New England Nouwen Retreat / Symposium, an annual retreat undertaken by the Passionists and the Henri Nouwen Society. The symposium took place at The Passionists Calvary Retreat Center.

A Theology of the Heart: The Life and Writings of Henri Nouwen will be a 12-week course starting in January 2004. File includes a copy of the newsletter "St. Francis Xavier University, Ministry Programs, News and Views" which contains student comments on the course and a promotional bookmark for the Theology of the Heart course.

Course descriptions for the summer institute of The Center for Theological and Spiritual Development

File contains registration material for the Summer Institute held by the Center for Theological and Spiritual Development, College of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown, NJ. At the 2003 institute, a one credit course was open to undergraduates and the general public entitled, "The Spiritual Sensitivity of Henri Nouwen and Ronald Rolheiser". Dr. Doris Donnelly was the instructor.

Pamphlet for retreat claiming our spiritual power

Folder consists of a brochure for a retreat entitled "Claiming our Spiritual Power: The Return of the Prodigal Son". This was a retreat based on Nouwen's book and led by Jeff Imbach and Steve Imbach. It was held at the Rivendell Retreat Center, Bowen Island, B.C on October 24-26, 2003.

Articles on "befriending life" and manuscripts of "preparing for death"

File consists of reference material regarding Beth Poter’s anthology Befriending Life: and Henri Nouwen’s manuscript “Preparing for Death”. Included is a photocopy of an inscription from Nouwen to John and Mary-Alice [Santos]; photocopies of letters form Robert H. Schuller to Nouwen; a copy of a letter from Nouwen to Alica Allan, faxed from Robert Jonas’ residence, regarding a contract; a letter from Robert (Bob) M. Assorted business documents

File consists of photocopies of course material used by Henri Nouwen from the Nouwen Archives and business correspondence from before Nouwen’s death assembled by the Henri Nouwen Legacy Trust for reference purposes. Included are original letters between Nouwen, Margaret Sutton and various publishing contacts regarding: copyright, subrights, translation permissions, publication rights, royalty payouts, tax exemption status, revised editions of Nouwen’s books and publication dates. Also in the file is a brochure from the Henri Nouwen Foundation in the Ukraine and a newspaper article from the Catholic Free Press titled “Father Henri Nouwen remembered at retreat- ‘The Spiritual Legacy of Henri Nouwen: Ministry and Healing in Our Church and World” by Tanya Connor.

Seeds of Hope

File consists predominantly of evaluation forms regarding the Seeds of Hope retreats including original feedback forms; retreat statistics; and revenue and cost reports. Also in the file are an interoffice memo from Maureen Wright regarding proposed dates and themes of retreats, and an email from Mary Lou Duquano to Toni Urbanski regarding a reimbursement to Sue Mosteller in Trust for a Seeds of Hope event (copy of reimbursement cheque included).

Sue's completed engagements 2001-2002

File consists of correspondence and administrative documentation regarding Sue Mosteller’s attendance and participation in various events and retreats. Included area agendas, itineraries and promotional material; event invitation letters; copies of letters and emails sent by Mosteller to event organizers; and travel arrangement documents. Also in the file is a listing of events titled Calendar Files: Sue’s Completed Engagements; Gordon Henry’s curriculum vitae; a biographical sketch about Mosteller; copies of a letter from University of St. Michael’s College President, Richard M. Alway, notifying Mosteller of the school’s decision to award her the degree of Doctor of Sacred Letters, honoris causa and inviting her to a convocation ceremony to receive the honour; and Beth Poter’s curriculum vitae for use in her nomination for the Religion Division of the American Association on Mental Retardation’s Henri J.M. Nouwen Award.

File consists of financial records for the Henri Nouwen Society including independent auditors' reports from 2001, 2002, and 2003; grants to the Henri Nouwen Society; tax exemption letters; and financial statements.

Reading groups

File consists of materials for reading groups on Nouwen's work. File includes reading and discussion questions; promotional materials; reading assignments; a sign-up list for duties; excerpts; and prints of Rembrandt's the Prodigal Son.

File consists of a copy of “Pastor’s Picks” in The Christian Century by Jackson W. Carroll from August 2003.

Committee terms of reference

File consists of copies of the by-laws of the New Catholic Times Inc., a copy of the mission statement, and copies of the terms of reference for the Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, and Editorial committees.

Henri Nouwen Society event photographs

File consists of photographs and cards sent to the Henri Nouwen Society of various unidentified Nouwen retreats. Wendy Greer is featured in a few of the photographs of unidentified retreats. One photograph is of Henri Nouwen and others from a 1994 retreat at the Holy Redeemer Church in Thornhill. The back of this photograph has a handwritten note by Errol Stein identifying those in the image.

Priest inspires ministry from heart to heart

File consists of an article by Tanya Connor of an interview with Jutta Ayer who recounts her friendship with Henri Nouwen and the influence Nouwen had on her life. News from the Henri Nouwen Society newsletters

File consists of the official publication of the Henri Nouwen Society in Canada and the United States, providing information and updates regarding retreats, study groups, lecture series and other activities. During publication, the Henri Nouwen Society was considered a separate organization from the Henri Nouwen Society in Canada and the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre. In 2003, efforts were made to join the two groups together. As a result, publication was discontinued. The last edition of "News from the Henri Nouwen Society" was published in Winter / Spring 2003. In addition to hard copies of the newsletter, the file includes a 3.5" diskette of electronic files for the Fall 2001 newsletter.

Letters from Pat Sibley Parry

File consists of correspondence between Nouwen and Mike Sibley, Pat Sibley, and William (Bill) Parry. Correspondence includes letters between the Henri Nouwen Society and Pat Sibley on the possibility of donating Nouwen's letters to the Henri Nouwen Literary Estate. These letters contain annotations on what letters were sent to the archive. File also contains a hand-drawn map of Losone, Switzerland by Nouwen with an accompanying note explaining it. File includes photographs of the "Holding Giving" statue commissioned by Nouwen for L'Arche Daybreak sent to Parry from Nouwen and a scrapbook page with photograph clippings of Nouwen.

File consists of an article by John Allen Jr. in which he interviewed Jean Vanier about his life, and his work with L'Arche. The development of L'Arche communities is discussed, noting that international attention was brought to them in the mid 1980s when Nouwen chose to settle at L'Arche Daybreak in Richmond HIll, ON.

Correspondence between Robert Durback and Rick Manella

File consists of three letters between Rick Manella and Robert Durback.

  1. December 22, 2001, 3 p., typed, Manella expresses appreciation for the book "Seeds of Hope," and includes a copy of an email to friends of Rick and Gay Manella, recommending and praising "Seeds of Hope." Manella also inquires about meeting Durback.
  2. January 9, 2002, 1 p., typed, Durback expresses appreciation for Manella's letter, and surprise, since the book has been out since 1989. Durback also agrees to meet with Manella.
  3. January 13, 2002, 1p., typed, Manella agrees to drive to meet Durback. He also gives permission for Durback to share his musings and praise with people at L'Arche Daybreak.

Article on teleconference held by University of Notre Dame on Henri Nouwen

File consists of a brief article in Notre Dame World 5, no. 1 (Spring 2002): [16], discussing the international teleconference, "Henri Nouwen's Passion and Spirituality", hosted for the first time by the Centre for Social Concerns, University of Notre Dame. The article briefly describes the guest speakers and presentations, and includes interviews with those who knew Nouwen.

Joe LaCroix
