Fritz Hauch Eden Crowe Papers

Contains the only known records of Captain Fritz Hauch Eden Crowe. The collection comprises of two leaves from a scrapbook, which has pasted-in watercolours and clippings, as well as three singular watercolours and one pencil drawing. These eleven watercolours and two pencil drawings were made during the course of his travels as a British naval officer and Consul-General to Portuguese East Africa at the following locations: Bahia Blanca (Argentina), Chupat, Patagonia (Argentina), Colonia, Rio Plata (Uruguay), Santa Catarina and Anhatomirim Island (Brazil), Simambaya Island (off the coast of Lamu, Kenya), Cape Verde (off the Senegalese coast), Egypt and Ascension Island (South Atlantic Ocean, 1600 km from the coast of Africa). Collected clippings demonstrate Crowe’s interest in naval history and exploration. Crowe’s papers also contain personal correspondence, notably three letters written to his mother (1863, 1872, 1878), and one to his grandfather as a 14 year old naval cadet. Correspondence and documentation also relates to his career as a naval officer and consul-general including a commission document, a letter of introduction and a letter from Crowe requesting retirement. The collected papers comprises some estate documents, such as an original codicil to Crowe’s will, which makes arrangements for his young daughter, as well as documents outlining the distribution of inheritance from his Uncle and his parents.

Contains the personal archives of Lester Douglas of four artists: Earl Horter, Hans Foy, David Karfunkle and Barbara Shermund. Douglas was acquainted with these artists through his role as the Director of Art and Printing for the Chamber of Commerce of the United States and through his work as a typographer and book designer. These collections include original artworks from all four artists, including drawings, paintings, etchings and engravings, some of them inscribed with dedications to Douglas. Apart from Horter, the artworks are contained in portfolios created by Douglas. Also included is correspondence from Horter and Foy to Douglas, as well as some ephemera, such as newspaper clippings and exhibition pamphlets for Horter, Foy and Karfunkle.

The bulk of the material was created by the Canadian Bata company, however many records relate to several of the oraganization’s international outposts, including companies headed in Africa, India, Asia and Europe. The collection also includes press clippings and other publications about the Bata Company and its historical significance. There are also a small number of Bata family records, primarily for Thomas J. Bata (1914-2008), Sonja I. Bata, Tomáš Baťa (1876-1932) and Marie Bata.

Contains notes and transcribed letters taken by Ann Robson as part of research on Helen Taylor (womens’ rights suffragist, daughter of Harriet Taylor Mill, 1808-1858, and stepdaughter of philosopher and economist John Stuart Mill, 1806-1873). Includes transcriptions of letters exchanged between members of the Mill-Taylor family, as well as general notes on other 19th and 20th century writing on the subject of women’s rights.
The notes appear to have been taken during Robson’s consultation of a number of different archival collections at different institutions, which she noted in the margins. The bulk of the notes appear to refer to the Mill-Taylor collection held at the London School of Economics (LSE).

Collection contains nineteen Cree language instruction manuals written and independently published by Anne Anderson, which includes books designed for children at the elementary level as well as books written for older students and adults. The collection contains a small amount of archival material including two letters from Anne Anderson to James Fidelholtz, where she discusses her reasoning for choosing to teach Cree, “I being of Indian and white blood is doing this type of work as it concern the many different tribes. Only now after years of being looked down upon, we are looked upon as truly human beings.” As well as her qualifications in teaching, “If you are not Cree and if you do not speak the language, all the degrees in the world will not help. You need to have lived the life of an Indian and be fluent in the language and traditions to hold a degree in teaching this language.”
Also included in the collection are a collaborative book in Cree instruction produced by the Department of Education in Alberta in 1969, as well as four books written by Indigenous students attending Federal residential and day schools (Kingfisher Lake Indian Day School, Fort George Residential School, and Deer Lake Indian Day School), which were printed by the Department of Indian Affairs and the Education Division of Indian Affairs Branch of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

Collection contains professional and personal papers pertaining to the life and career of Shyam Selvadurai. These papers contain extensive material on the novels of Selvadurai. This includes prolific drafts, most with holograph revisions, proofs and promotional material for all four of his novels. The collection also contains extensive research that was conducted by Selvadurai for Funny Boy and Cinnamon Gardens. Material also relates to two unpublished novels: one tracing the lives of the characters from Swimming in the Monsoon Sea as adults and living in Canada, and the other – The Vanishing Relics, which Selvadurai wrote during the course of his MFA in 2010.

Also included in the collection are drafts and published articles and stories, which appeared in journals, newspapers and magazines, as well as additions to anthologies which were edited by Selvadurai. Records relate to promotion and career of Selvadurai including articles and interviews, author photographs, readings and events. Collection also pertains to the personal life of Selvadurai with correspondence (primarily between 1985 and 2005), photographs and personal items. Other personal material relates to his education in Sri Lanka and Canada and theatre productions directed by Selvadurai as a young adult in Sri Lanka.

Includes correspondence and other print material related to Hungarian-American playwright and novelist Ferenc Molnar (1878-1952) and his legal wife, the actress Lili Darvas (1902-1974), with some letters addressed to Kati Rekai (1921-2010). Rekai’s aunt, Wanda Bartha, was Molnar’s private secretary, literary advisor and soul mate who died prematurely at the age of 38, and was also best friends with Darvas. Most material is in Hungarian. Molnar wrote Companion in Exile (1950) to honour the memory of his life with Wanda Bartha. Also includes a variety of material related to Kati Rekai, including a typescript account by Dr. John Rekai of the Rekai family’s experience emigrating to Canada in 1950, print items and some correspondence.

This collection contains two photograph albums belonging to a German couple, Hermann and Emmi Meinhardt, which separately record their wartime experiences. Hermann Meinhardt’s album provides a personalized look at his experiences serving with a flak regiment in the Luftwaffe, which served in France, Austria, Ukraine, Romania and Russia, with photographs focusing on the war-torn landscapes, moments of camaraderie, and battle. Emmi Meinhardt’s album shows the experience of a young mother and her daughter, who were evacuated from Cologne to the Bavarian countryside. Together, both albums demonstrate a unique look at how the war was experienced on the front and at home. This collection also contains a selection of loose photographs belonging to Hermann Meinhardt, which were not included in the album, and date from 1941 to December 1942. Additionally, Hermann Meinhardt’s posthumous medals, including his Iron Cross and his Eastern front medal, were donated along with the photographs. This collection also contains extensive contemporary research on Hermann Meinhardt, his battalion and his military experiences, which was conducted by Inga Kahn, Herman and Emmi Meinhardt’s daughter, her friend, Barbara Tangney, and librarian, Danielle Van Wagner. A book, Vom Train zum Roland: Eine Geschichte der deutschen Flugabwehrtruppe (1988), contains a published account of Meinhardt’s battalion, I./Flak Regt. 4, which provides extensive context to Hermann Meinhardt’s album and photographs.

Box also contains typed version of manuscript (69 pages). Typed manuscript was prepared by Janet Cartwright and Catherine Caufield (Saville’s nieces) and features a photograph of Miriam Saville.
Miriam Saville was a diabetic patient treated by Dr. Charles Best in the late 1920s/early 1930s when she was about thirteen years old, see mention of Dr. Best (“Dr. Charles”) on page 5 of both the holograph journal and typed version. First chapter of typed manuscript is titled: ‘Diagnosis and Dr. Best.’

One-line-a-day farm diaries kept by William Smellie (1836-1919) of Glenelg Township, Ontario. Smellie’s handwritten diaries date from 1883 to 1916, with his earlier diaries dating from 1879-1882, here reproduced in photocopy. Through his daily entries, Smellie offers a glimpse into farm life in Ontario at the turn of the century. He not only documents livestock, crops, and weather on the farm, but also records important events in his family and community. The diaries also include numerous newspaper clippings and loose notes kept by Smellie.

The Atkins Family Papers

A collection of papers pertaining to the Tinkler, Barnard, and Atkins families of England. The exact relationship between the Tinkler family and the Barnard/Atkins family remains unknown, although the papers related to Tinklers have been preserved together with those of the other families for several generations. The first box includes the military correspondence of Robert Barnard (d. 1854) from Ireland during the great famine year of 1847 as well as his letters from the Crimean War. The second box includes the military correspondence of Sir John Atkins, KCMG, KCVO, FRCS (1875-1963) from his year of service in the Boer War, as well as materials related to his career as a medical officer in the First World War. Boxes 3-5 reflect the life and career of Sir Hedley John Barnard Atkins, KStJ, KBE (1904-1983), first professor of surgery at Guy’s Hospital, London and President of the Royal College of Surgeons. He specialised in the scientific treatment of breast cancer and the Hedley Atkins Breast Unit at New Cross Hospital acknowledges his contribution in the field. From 1971 to 1973 he was President of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Girdwood Collection of Glass Lantern Slides, Niagara Falls and Area

Collection consists of 79 stereoscopic and panorama glass negatives taken by Girdwood and by commercial photographers, one of whom was possibly American photographer James Thomson. Fifteen of the slides depict scenes in and around Niagara Falls and are mounted with descriptions. Other locations depicted include Montreal and Ottawa, however, in many cases there is no information about either the photographer or location. Some of the negatives have been split into two pictures as each side contained a different image, and some of the negatives have only one image as they were taken as panoramas instead of stereo images.

There is a large number of original art boards and other oversized materials, such as posters. Includes accessions from 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2015. Accessions from the gifts of 2001 and 2003 were catalogued separately. For additional drawings and illustrations from Outline of Cat Anatomy with Reference to the Human (University of Toronto Press, 2000) and Atlas of General Zoology (Burgess Publishing Co., 1991), Anatomy of the Fetal Pig (University of Washington Press, 1963). These accessions were amalgamated into finding aid in 2018 and the entire collection was given the number of MS Coll. 413. The collection previously had the number of MS Coll. 289.

This collection is largely comprised of material used by Professor H. Gordon Skilling in writing his book, Czechoslovakia's Interrupted Revolution (Princeton University Press, 1976). It contains newsclippings, typescripts, Radio Free Europe reports and analyses, and special issues of newspapers and ephemera printed during the 1968 intervention.

A scrapbook of letters and clippings documenting the career of Judge Herbert Denton. It includes about one hundred letters and forty clippings. A separate group of thirteen letters is addressed to Denton's son, Samuel B.G. Denton, on the occasion of the death of his brother, Wilfrid H., in 1948.

The collection consists of correspondence and papers of Andrew Drummond and his sons, Charles, George and Frank. It includes a variety of family letters as well as letters from Sir Sandford Fleming, Sir Oliver Mowat and Sir John Schultz. Noteworthy items include early correspondence (1841-1848) relating to St. Andrew's Church in Ottawa; Andrew Drummond's reminiscenes describing his experience as an accountant and cashier in the Bank of Montreal during the 1837 Rebellion, the Fenian Raids and during later disturbances; correspondence and scrapbooks on the attempt to promote the Hudson's Bay Railway; and papers relating to George Drummond's invention of a new typewriter.
