Personal and biographical

This series contains copies of Professor Flynn’s curriculum vitae and some correspondence, both personal and professional and including letters of reference, and examination questions for his undergraduate work in Arts at the University of Toronto in the early 1940s. Included are three photographs and a satirical drawing of his receiving his doctorate from the Sorbonne.

Personal records of Dr. Harold Keith Box including correspondence, lecture and research notes relating to his career in dentistry and as research professor in peridontology in the Faculty of Dentistry.

This series consists of two files containing his curriculum vitae and clippings, some correspondence and published articles on or about Prof. Harney. Included are copies of newspaper clippings quoting his views on Italian Canadians, notices of awards and honours for his book Dalla Frontiera alle Little Italies among others, and a review of posthumously published essays entitled If One were to write a history…Selected writings by Robert F. Harney. Edited by Pierre Anctil and Bruno Ramirez.

Correspondence

This series contains correspondence received by Fredericka (or Frieda) before, during and after her marriage to William Dale and correspondence from her children following the death of her husband in 1921. The letters prior to her marriage predominantly document the period after graduation from Queen’s University when she attempted to find employment as a teacher or companion and her courtship by William Dale. The correspondence from William Dale does not begin until January 1900 when she is in Saranac Lake, New York, and after breaking off her engagement to Jack Munro. In addition to describing his growing love for Frieda, William also describes his teaching duties at McMaster University and his family and life in St. Marys.

The correspondence after their marriage indicates that they were frequently separated, with William teaching in Toronto or at the farm in Blanschard Twp while Frieda stayed with her parents in Cornwall or Kingston. From 1905 to his death in 1921, correspondence from her husband and some Ryckman family members concerns the birth of their children, his participation in the local government in St.Marys, farming matters and trips to Toronto. There is a file of condolence letters on the death of William Dale and includes letters from Maurice Hutton, W. S. Milner (University of Toronto), and F. H. Wallace (Victoria College).

From 1923 to 1930, Margaret (“Marnay”) and then Frances (“Fran”) wrote regularly to their mother while attending the University of Toronto. These letters describe the day to day university life from a woman’s perspective – the lectures, residence life, social activities and include impressions of friends and teachers. The letters from Frances should be read in conjunction with her diaries (See Sous fonds 2, Series 1). It should be noted that there are no letters for 1929, and the 1930 letters are mainly from Frances while she worked at Jasper Park Lodge during the months of June to August and from Margaret describing her trip to Europe that same summer.

Personal and family

This series consists of files documenting Professor Friedland’s personal and family activities. It begins with a number of files documenting Friedland’s activities as a student and professor of law at the University of Toronto, his post-retirement professional and other activities. There follow files relating to members of his family, arranged by name, which focus broadly on family affairs and more specifically on personal lives, including professional and social activities, achievements, births, weddings and deaths. These are followed by other files containing correspondence sent home from England, Europe and Israel, and relating to the Friedland residences on Hillsdale Avenue and Belsize Drive.

The files contain correspondence, appointment books, certificates, curriculum vitae, greeting cards, honours, notes, notices, legal documents such as passports and wills, medical reports, programmes, postcards, photographs, and press clippings (including obituaries).

Lectures and conferences

Series consists of posters for lectures and conferences hosted by university offices, departments, faculties, and student/alumni groups. Topics in include science, astronomy, politics, archaeology, medicine, literature, history, philosophy, theatre, theology, law, current events, and higher education. Administration

The records in this series contain the working papers of Prof. Andrews as a member of the Planning and Priorities Subcommittee of the Planning and Resources Committee of Governing Council from 1976 through his period as Chair (1978-1980). The Subcommittee was established on September 23, 1976 to replace the Planning Subcommittee for the academic session 1976-1977. Included are copies of agenda, reports, original correspondence and notes taken at meetings. Since Prof. Andrews also represented Erindale College, files relating to the College’s submissions to this Subcommittee will also be found.

Correspondence files

Correspondence between Cinader and members of the international medical and university communities documenting mainly the business of various institutes, conferences, research projects. Also some matters relating to the Faculty of Medicine and the Institute of Immunology. Files are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent.

Correspondence

This series encompasses four decades of Dr. Edward Safarian's professional correspondence. It covers his relationships with numerous professional associations and a range of professional activities including correspondence with publishers, academic colleagues and government agencies. The broad time frame of the series begins with Safarian's leaving graduate studies at the University of California for the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in Ottawa, his tenure as a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, and his later teaching and administrative activities at the University of Toronto. In addition, it illustrates his wide network of connections with universities across North America and around the world.

The bulk of the series is arranged chronologically by year. Following the chronological arrangement, there is a file of "personal" correspondence. This is followed by a grouping of professional correspondence arranged by Safarian according to specific subjects. Most relate to his ongoing interest in foreign investment in Canada and to the controversy surrounding the publication of The Struggle for Canadian Universities, edited by Robin Matthews and James Steele.

Some of this correspondence is in the nature of postcards and telegrams, and accompanying certain letters are notes, addresses, reports, and programmes.

Personal correspondence and some other private exchanges with individuals, covering a variety of issues and activities; numerous letters of reference are included. There is also a file on the seventh Table Ronde d’Économistes France-Canada, held in Paris, France, in 1991 and one on the honorary degree awarded to Arthur E. Child by the University of Toronto in 1984, at which Professor Safarian gave the citation. The files contain, in addition to correspondence, memoranda, notes, and drafts of reports and addresses. The arrangement is chronological and by name of event or individual.

These boxes contains card indicies under numerous bibliographic headings on Communism in Czechoslovakia and the history of the Czech Communist party between 1918 and 1958.

University-wide administration files

Subseries consists of university-wide administration files which include the Dean Search Committee, Connaught Committee, School of Graduate Studies Assistant to the Dean, Library Advisory Committee, Massey College Associate Fellow and the OISE Board of Governors. It also includes files relating to the Rendo Foundation, an Italian group negotiating to set up a special relationship with U of T, involving funding and research support for projects at U of T that fell through.

The three files in this series contain copies of Professor Hartle's curriculum vitae, printouts of his computer directories and logs, and a list of his journals.

Personal and general correspondence

This series contains general correspondence, curriculum vitae, letters of reference for clerical and professional staff broadly documenting his activities as teacher, administrator and author, as well as other professional activities. Correspondence files for example, relate to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Providence Villa, and the University of Toronto Department of Medicine.

Personal records and early career

Series consists of records relating to Prof. Cameron's early career and personal life. Records pertaining to various positions held by Prof. Cameron (including at Trent University, the University of Toronto, and various government departments) include offers of employment, staff appointment forms, appraisal reports, salary revisions, training records, and correspondence.

Further records relating to Prof. Cameron's employment at Trent University include course syllabi and a copy of the Trent University Student newspaper, Arthur, (1976) with a cover story about an English Department scandal during Prof. Cameron's time as Trent's Dean of Arts and Science. Records relating to his time on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Canadian Studies (1982-1985) include minutes of the editorial board meeting.

Records classed as 'personal' primarily relate to professional matters of particular import (ex: appointments and promotions), and include correspondence, peer reviews, letters of reference, employment records, other people's CVs, congratulatory notes, and membership records. One file also includes a handwritten letter from Jane Jacobs. One file consists of a diary recording Prof. Cameron's time in England in 1966.

The first file in this series includes file lists and inventories of Prof. Cameron's records during various points in his career. These may be useful to researchers working with records in other series, as some documents are listed at the item level.

Series also includes 9 photographs: primarily posed portraits and a photograph of Prof. Cameron at the Conference on the University into the 21st century in May 1984.

Education and Personal Activities

The series partially documents Francess Halpenny’s education received at Maxville Sunday School in 1927 ; at the Public Schools of the Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry in 1928 ; and at the Oakwood Collegiate Institute, from 1931 to 1936. It also partially documents her undergraduate education, from 1937 to 1940, (B.A. in English literature) and her graduate studies (M.A. English literature) at the University of Toronto, in 1940 and 1941. The series documents the friendship between Francess Halpenny and Elizabeth and Jennifer Harper, between 1983 and 1986 ; Halpenny’s participation to social events, such as the dinner for 40th wedding anniversary of Morley and Clara Thomas in 1982, a dinner at Rideau Hall in 1983 and an evening in honour of Floyd S. Chalmer, Jean A. Chalmer and John Beckwith in 1984.

The series consists of 7 files including certificates and diplomas, course notes, Faculty of Arts Class and Prize Lists, correspondence and press clippings. It also includes one letter received from J. Mavor Moore, 16 October 1989 regarding Halpenny’s course notes he had kept from the University years ; a certificate of Honour Award received in recognition of her contribution to the undergraduate life at the University of Toronto, 7 June 1940 ; personal correspondence received after a period of illness in 1984 ; the address she gave at J. Russell Harper funeral and his obituary for the Royal Society of Canada.
