Charles Fothergill Papers

The collection includes correspondence both private and public, diaries, natural history notebooks, a few sketches, and scrapbooks. Much of the material pre-dates Fothergill's arrival in Upper Canada in 1816. Some of the family correspondence continues for over 30 years after his death in 1840.

First accession contains correspondence, drafts of speeches and writings, journals, scrapbooks, photographs, clippings and family papers.

Second accession contains 56 boxes and items. The documents consist of personal and business correspondence, articles and addresses, banking and legal documents, estate information, biography information, and other items. The correspondence relates to art and the National Gallery, De Grassi Point, geology, Japanese consul, The Champlain Society, the National Battlefields Commission, the Royal Colonial Institute, the Round Table, University College Alumnae Association Building Committee. There is a significant amount of correspondence from the Canadian Bank of Commerce, the University of Toronto, and the Royal Ontario Museum, and with many prominent individuals in Canada and worldwide as well as letters to Mary before and after they married and messages of condolence received by the family after the death of Sir Edmund Walker. Other documents in the collection relate to the Alexander, Buchan, and Morrow families; the Coronation of King George V and other special events; the Duke of Sutherland's Scheme (Imperial Colonization Corporation of Canada); the West Virginia Debt Settlement; and C. White Mortimer. The items are books, a lace handkerchief, a wooden drawer containing numerous calling cards, card index of pictures and art objects, a framed drawing of the coat of arms, Sir Edmund Walker's certificates and medal upon being admitted as a Knight of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, pieces of the fireplace from Long Garth, a silver vase, a silver bowl, a china plate with Walker crest and logo, and a fishing rod and net.

This fonds contains the personal and professional papers documenting the life and accomplishments of physicist John Satterly. Included is personal and professional correspondence, family documents, material related to Devon, England and its history; photoprints; course notes and related material such as certificates and diplomas from Satterly's days as a student; lecture notes; laboratory experiments; problem sets, examinations; textbooks; research notes; and publications which document his career as physicist at the University of Toronto.

Few administrative records of the Department of Physics from the first half of the twentieth century are available in the University Archives. As a result, this fonds provides documentation not only the life of the renowned physicist, but also of the teaching of Physics at the University of Toronto from 1912 to 1950 as well. The personal papers of other physicists already in the Archives compliment the Satterly fonds.

Sawyer-Douglass Family Papers

This series, made up from small items that were found while sorting through this accession, is evidence of Dr. Hogg's keen sense of family history. Most relate to Carrie Sawyer-Douglass and Walter Douglass, her mother and stepfather. There are also some notes on family history and a folder of 19th century documents. Perhaps the most interesting records are a series of daily diaries dated from 1901 to 1909 and 1924 to 1941, kept by Leonora Knapp Battles, a cousin and close friend of Carrie Sawyer.

This series contains a biographical sketch of Satterly written by H.L. Welsh; family and professional correspondence; press clippings; letters to the editor; family documents including birth and marriage certificates; obituary notices; clippings, memorabilia, and photoprints relating to Devon, England and its history; postcards, and photoprints. A heavily annotated Bible belonging to Dr. G. M. W. Carey is also included in this series.

Consists of various documents, maps, letters and bound volumes acquired by Louis Melzak. The majority of the items relate to the Morris and McLean families which had been collected in a scrapbook by Edmund Morris. The letters and documents had been arranged by Morris in two groups: those of the Alexander McLean family and those of the Alexander Morris family. He included a brief outline of the history of the McLean family and an index of those documents.
The bound volumes include an early printer's pay-book, the diary of a British soldier series in Upper Canada and material relating to the settlement of the Eastern Townships of Quebec.

Cartwright and Wood Families fonds

Fonds consists of records relating to three generations of the Cartwright family, their relatives, friends and colleagues. Most prominent are the papers of Mabel Cartwright, which includes correspondence with her family and relatives, diaries, notebooks and photographs.

Correspondence and other records from earlier generations of Cartwrights are included, most from Mabel Cartwright’s parents dating from the late 1860s to the early 1920s. Letters from Mabel Cartwright’s siblings, including Stephen, a missionary in Japan, are included. Financial and legal documents are included from the time Mabel Cartwright lived with her sister Winifred. The fonds also contains material accumulated and written by Hilda Fern Wood about Mabel Cartwright, and some records relating to the Wood family.

Fonds consists of 6 series that follow the chronological dates of the records and illustrate the progression of Ran Ide's professional career. Other than the first series, which covers Ran Ide's family and early years, the majority of the records focus on the professional aspects of his life. The final series consists of a finding aid compiled by the donor, John Ide, Ran Ide's son and contains anecdotes and detailed explanations of all of the records at the item level. There is also a series of writings from Ran Ide's Before and After: Recollections which he wrote for his family in 1996 and several writings of memories written by John Ide.
