Jean-Jacques Rousseau Papers

The collection consists of a small group of documents and letters by or about Rousseau, the bulk of which are notes on the history of women taken by Rousseau from a variety of books. He appears to have compiled these notes acting as secretary to Louise Marie Madelaine (Fontaine) Dupin, who had hoped to write a book on the history of women (the work was never completed).

Collection consists of forms relating to the civil and military governments of Upper and Lower Canada. Most are printed and completed in manuscript, some in manuscript only. Many forms document the salaries and pensions paid by the Province of Quebec (later Lower Canada). Two (1815 and 1817) are for Upper Canada. These are filed as "disbursements"; military payments as "warrants"; others include: receipts, powers of attorney, military "ordinaries" and "extraordinaries", etc
There are a variety of signatures on each document, including those of the governor, secretary, recipient or attorney for the recipient, etc. Only a few were definitely printed in Canada: byT.Cary and Co and by J. Neilson in Quebec. There is no imprint on most of them-they could have been printed in Canada.

The collection consists of Penningtons's writings, research materials and correspondence. It includes material relating to his research on the etchings of Wenceslaus Hollars, along with drafts of his book A Descriptive Catalogue of the Etched Work of Wencelaus Hollar, 1607-1677 (1982). It also contains material relating to his book Peterley Harvest: The Private Diary of David Peterley (1960) and to his unpublished memoirs. There are also letters from various English authors and correspondence and papers relating to his work as librarian and secretary of the National Liberal Club in London, England, in the 1930s. Some of the later material relates to Pennington's private press publications.

The first accession (1901-1906) of this collection consists of papyri from the Fayûm, Hibeh, and Oxyrinchus, Egypt. It includes fragments from classical authors (some with textual interest); legal documents (including marriage contracts, land transfers, tax receipts, a will, various contracts); miscellaneous accounts and receipts; and personal letters. Many are very fragmentary and mutilated. The second accession of Graeco-Roman documents (2004) is largely undescribed. Those papyri housed in glass have been photographed and may be viewed at the 3rd link below.

Contains the personal and professional records of Robert Arnold Russel. This includes photographs of Russel and his family, information regarding his early life including schooling and university, family tree information and identifying documents such as baptism records and passports. The collection contains a comprehensive collection of Russel’s diaries and daytimers spanning from 1949 to his death in 2011. Professional records include materials pertaining to his early career in theatre, film and broadcasting, during the course of which he resided in France, England and Montreal. His career as an information professional and futurist is recorded extensively including his penning of the term “intersex” and “cybersex” in 1967 and his interview with Marshall McLuhan in 1962. As a futurist, Russel’s operated several businesses, most specifically, Orba Information (also called Orbafilm and Orba Inc), which operated between 1967 and 1993, which is archived in great detail, a smaller amount of information on later businesses including Rapid Response Inc., Toronto, Institute for Research on Public Policy and The Consortium for National Development is also available. Collection also contains drafts, proposals, budgets and storyboards surrounding Russel’s personal creative writing, including The Spark, a proposed television program and I am Haida, a proposed CD-ROM and game on Haida culture, and novels – The Petrans and Clone.

Collection contains professional and personal papers pertaining to the life and career of Shyam Selvadurai. These papers contain extensive material on the novels of Selvadurai. This includes prolific drafts, most with holograph revisions, proofs and promotional material for all four of his novels. The collection also contains extensive research that was conducted by Selvadurai for Funny Boy and Cinnamon Gardens. Material also relates to two unpublished novels: one tracing the lives of the characters from Swimming in the Monsoon Sea as adults and living in Canada, and the other – The Vanishing Relics, which Selvadurai wrote during the course of his MFA in 2010.

Also included in the collection are drafts and published articles and stories, which appeared in journals, newspapers and magazines, as well as additions to anthologies which were edited by Selvadurai. Records relate to promotion and career of Selvadurai including articles and interviews, author photographs, readings and events. Collection also pertains to the personal life of Selvadurai with correspondence (primarily between 1985 and 2005), photographs and personal items. Other personal material relates to his education in Sri Lanka and Canada and theatre productions directed by Selvadurai as a young adult in Sri Lanka.
