An evening with Henri Nouwen: a time to mourn, a time to dance, a celebration of the spirit in healing

File consists of a sound recording of the 25th anniversary celebration event of the Christian Counselling Services (Toronto, ON). The event took place at Hart House, University of Toronto on February 4-5, 1992. Henri Nouwen was the key note speaker. The title of his talk was "A Time to Mourn, A time to Dance". The event also featured music and the singing of hymns. The recording was produced by Emmanuel Productions.

Talk given by Henri Nouwen at All Saints' Parish in 1994

File consists of one audio cassette of a talk given by Henri Nouwen at All Saints' Parish in Beverley Hills, California. The talk is titled, "An Afternoon with Henri Nouwen" and is thought to have been given some time between November 3 to 6 1994. These dates are based on the contents of Nouwen's weekly calendar (Personal Records, file 244).

Interview with Henri Nouwen

File consists of two original mini cassette tapes, containing a phone interview completed by Wayne Rice with Henri Nouwen in December 1992. The topic of the interview is prayer, and the interview was used as the basis for an article for Youthworker Journal , titled “Gazing at Jesus: A Conversation with Henri Nouwen.” The interview took place about a year after Rice, his wife Marci, and six other friends, spent a week with Henri at his residence in L’Arche Daybreak near Toronto, Ontario, Canada in December 1991. They talk a little bit about that time together at the end of the interview.

File consists of 4 digital audio tapes of Henri J.M. Nouwen on The Return of the Prodigal Son. The recordings were taken from a retreat talk given by Henri to assistants in Quebec, 1991. These are duplicates of the Master tapes from the publisher/producer Sounds True.

Nouwen letter project administrative files

File consists of administrative material for the Nouwen Letter Project. Materials are separated into the following files:

File 1: 2007 Donation Campaign
File consists of initial project reports for the 2007 continuation of the letter project; a deed of gift agreement; an image usage agreement; a website notice; letters of requests; follow-up letters; brochures; flowcharts; progress and summary reports; personnel files; and examples of deeds of gifts, usage agreements, and letters of requests from other institutions.

File 2: Quotes
File consists of quotations and estimates for printing business cards, brochures, cards, envelopes, and letters.

File 3: 2007 Working Lists
File consists of working lists that are separated into high, mid, and low priorities. Some lists are annotated with additional notes by Sue Mosteller and Gabrielle Earnshaw.

File 4: Tokens of appreciation
File consists of planning and samples of hand-printed cards of Nouwen quotes that were used as tokens of appreciation.

File 5: 2010 Letter Project Coordinator personnel files
File consists of personnel files of the 2010 Henri Nouwen Letter Project coordinator. File includes letters of employment, a project grant approval, a summary report for September 2009 to June 2011, budget correspondence, and handwritten notes by Brynn Phillips Lawrence who was the project coordinator from 2009 to 2012.

File 6: Deeds of Gifts
File consists of four copies of the deed of gift agreement sent to donors to the Nouwen Letter Project. One copy has an accession number and date handwritten on it.

File 7: Letterheads
File consists of blank letterheads used for correspondence for the Letter Project and mailing labels. The letterhead margin lists the Nouwen Archive Letter Project Board and a Nouwen quote from The Genesee Diary.

File 8: Checklists
File consists of three copies of the checklist used when receiving and organizing donations to the Nouwen Letter Project.

File 9: Experiencing Henri
File consists of different versions of a questionnaire sent out for “Experiencing Henri” which asked for reflections on connections with Nouwen to provide context for materials donated to the Letter Project.

File 10: Letter Project Back-ups
File consists of 3 optical disks containing backups for the Letter Project files from 2012.

File 11: Audiovisual materials
File consists of administrative audiovisual materials from the Nouwen Project. One DVD is raw audio/video footage for an interview conducted by Brynn Phillips Lawrence with Gabriella Silano. The interview was conducted in order to prepare a 5 minute promotional video, to be posted on the Nouwen Archive Letter Project website. File also includes sound recordings from a memorial service for Michael Frederick Kennedy; an optical disc labelled “Gabriella Footage”; and a MiniDV cassette.

File 12: Correspondence files
File consists of correspondence for the letter project and are separated into folders by addressees and donors. List of all correspondents is kept in the first folder.

Talks by Henri Nouwen while at Yale University Divinity School

File consists of 15 CDs containing 9 sound recordings of talks by Henri Nouwen. All of these talks were contained in the Yale University Divinity School Memorabilia record collection. Contents are as follows:

1981 Spirituality Forum: "The Spiritual Life: A Christian Perspective"

The lecture for "Compassion and Vincent van Gogh" was given sometime in 1976 as part of a lecture series on Creative Expression of Religious Issues. The content of the lecture came out of Nouwen's course "Ministry in Non-Religious Institutions" which tried to articulate "what it would be like to be a compassionate person in a power hungry society."

Interview with Mary Carney

File consists of an interview with Mary Carney interviewed by Joe Vorstermans at the Henri Nouwen Society offices (Richmond Hill, ON). Carney is a hospice nurse in Hamden, CT. Carney met Nouwen when he was one of her supervisors in a Clinical Pastoral Course at Yale Divinity School. Carney remembers Nouwen performing Mass at the Yale Divinity School chapel, caring for Adam Arnett at L'Arche Daybreak (Richmond Hill, ON), assisting in her grief, offering advice, as an intent listener and the influence he had on her prayer life. Themes present in Carney's interview include nursing, death and Yushi Nomura. The interview is transcribed and is available electronically or in hard copy.

Head of House and Regional Meetings

Series consists of 68 audio cassettes made during the course of Head of House meetings or Regional meetings of L'Arche International. The Head of House provides support for the Community Leader by taking direct responsibility for the home. The Leader administrates the overall community, but the Heads of Houses take on the responsibilities of the home for the Leader. The Community Leader regularly meets with Heads of Houses to hear details, issues, listen to questions, to make community announcements, and create a supportive community around any situations that may need support.

Regional meeting 1981

File consists of 16 audio cassettes of the Central Regional Meeting from May 24-26, 1981, given by Fr. Bill Clarke and Dr. Larry Gillick. The cassettes numbered v7-v10 are part of a separate group, but are the same talks of v1-v6.

Head of House Meeting 1982

File consists of 34 audio cassettes featuring recordings of talks given at a North America Head of House meeting held from November 8-14, 1982, in Châteauguay, Quebec. The first 12 cassettes are translations of the talks in English (with duplicate copies), while the last 12 are the talks as given in French.
