Addresses

This series documents Dr. Mastromatteo’s research and advocacy in the form of addresses. The addresses in this series are mostly Dr. Mastromatteo’s but there are some addresses by others, possibly sent to him for review or reference purposes. There are also some small amounts of reference material filed with his addresses.

The addresses in this series are mainly about occupational health, with some on environmental issues and human rights issues as they relate to occupational health (for example workers’ compensation). Most addresses in this series were given at meetings of professional associations with a small number of talks given at private companies.

Records in this series include notes, manuscripts, correspondence, projector slides, reports and press clippings.

Education

This series documents Dr. Mastromatteo’s time as a student at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine (1942-1947), and later the School of Hygiene (1949-1950). The records pertain mainly to his education but also to more general life events and rites of passage. There is also one file of material from his time as a faculty member at the School of Hygiene, and some material from the Faculty of Medicine class of 1947 alumni. As he attended the Faculty of Medicine during World War II, the medical program was compressed from 6 to 4 years, and holidays were eliminated and replaced with army basic training. After the war ended, the program transitioned back to its normal schedule. For this reason, the class notes in B2018-0034 are somewhat irregularly dated. The Class of 1947 reunion "Then and Now" document contains a more detailed description of the medical program during and after the war.

Notebooks

This series consists of a set of notebooks Dr. Mastromatteo kept throughout his life that document his daily activities. A small number of the early notebooks contain notes taken by Dr. Mastromatteo during his medical school classes. The vast majority of the notebooks are daily activity logs documenting Dr. Mastromatteo’s travels, meetings, activities, expenditures and interactions with others.

Personal and biographical

This series consists of Dr. Mastromatteo’s biographical and personal records. They document his career, personal life, and professional and personal relationships. This series also contains many files documenting studies, projects and issues that Dr. Mastromatteo included with his personal files. Record types include curriculum vitae, correspondence, photos, cards and certificates, articles, pamphlets, reports, notes, forms, minutes and projector slides.

The material is arranged into two sections. The first section contains personal records, career records, records documenting relationships, education records, and general files. The records are arranged in that order and filed chronologically within each of those sub-sections. The second section contains files on specific work projects or issues and is arranged chronologically.

Records related to First Nations in Canada

Series consists of reports, photographs, drawings, and other material regarding First Nations people, primarily the Okanagan. Records relate to education and residential schools, culture and arts and crafts.

Biographical files

This series consists of records documenting Mary O'Brien's life and career as a nurse and midwife in Glasgow and Montreal, and her subsequent academic career as a feminist philosopher. Includes: articles and reviews of Mary O'Brien; records related to her involvement with the Feminist Party of Canada; letters from faculty, staff, academic community-at-large, and former students in support of Mary O'Brien for the 1987 OCUFA Teaching Award; sound recordings of an interview and awards ceremony; and obituaries and tributes to O'Brien following her death.

Photographs

This series consists of personal photographs of Mary O'Brien with her partner Cath McNaughton, friends, and colleagues. Includes early photographs of O'Brien as a nurse in Scotland and Montreal, two photographs of O'Brien at the Annual Conference of the UK Labour Party in October 1956, O'Brien receiving the City of Toronto's Constance E. Hamilton award in 1982. Also included are professional portraits of O'Brien taken for her books and a 1985 interview with the Kingston Whig-Standard.

Artistic Works

This series consists of poetry, short stories, and a play written by O'Brien. The play was written as part of an assignment during her undergraduate studies. Some of her poetry has been published in Resources for Feminist Research.

Correspondence

This series consists of correspondence to and from Mary O'Brien with colleagues at OISE, former students, and other academics. Included is correspondence about talks and addresses given by O'Brien and correspondence related to the French and Greek translations of O'Brien's book, The Politics of Reproduction.

Research and writing

This series consists of unpublished and published manuscripts written by Mary O'Brien over the course of her career. Includes: coursework and M.A. dissertation proposal from her studies at York University; miscellaneous unpublished drafts; material relating to her books The Politics of Reproduction (Boston: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1981) and Reproducing the World: Essays in Feminist Theory (Boulder, CO.: Westview Press, 1989); French and Greek translations of The Politics of Reproduction; book reviews of works by other feminist scholars; drafts of journal articles and book chapters in edited volumes; and drafts of conference addresses, keynotes, and lectures given by O'Brien.

Also included is a sound recording of an address given by O'Brien at the Centre for Women's Studies in Education at OISE in 1985.

Minutes and related records of the Victoria College Board

Series consists of minutes (including extracts), notes and drafts, reports and other records of the Victoria College Board. Also includes minutes of the annual meetings of ministers of the Wesleyan Methodist Church to elect Board and Officers of the College, 1862-1866. Also consists of a book created in 1869 out of the controversy between Dr. I. B. Aylesworth and some members of the Victoria College Board regarding the amount and payment of funds raised to pull the College out of debt: the book contains correspondence, resolutions, and financial statements, 1862-1869; printed statement regarding the controversy made to the Board by Dr. Aylesworth, 1873.

Minutes

Series consists of copies of official minutes, appendices and related documents, 1855-2009, and index to minutes. Appendices and related documents include reports from University departments, including the Victoria University Library Annual Report, the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies Annual Report, Enrollment Reports from Emmanuel College and Victoria College Registrars and annual lists of scholarship and award recipients. Also includes reports of Senate Committees, Reports from the President, copies of policies, and relevant correspondence.

Correspondence, reports, and other records

Series consists of memoranda of business meetings, 1879-1892, and lists of students, 1901-1908; addresses to Royalty, 1860-1869; report of the Senate on the draft of proposed changes in the public and high school courses of study and organization in the departmental examination system, 1904; a letter from John Diefenbaker re honorary degree, 1961 ; lists of senate members and elections from 2002, 2006 and 2010 ; and records related to Senate research funds, 2011.

Series consists of records of the Seiziémistes Canadiens meetings ; the CSRS Annual General Meetings and executive meetings including minutes and agendas ; the Canadian Federation for the Humanities records ; CSRS newsletters and bulletins ; financial records ; records from the annual conference ; membership records ; correspondence ; directories ; records of the Secretary-Treasurer and the President, as well as other Renaissance associations' records.

Maurice Cody School

Series contains records and notebooks documenting Vernon G. Turner's primary education at Maurice Cody Public School (later named Maurice Cody Public Junior School). Content includes school records and report cards, art work, subject and homework notebooks.

North Toronto Collegiate Institute

Series contains records and notebooks documenting Turner's secondary education at North Toronto Collegiate Institute. Content includes a notebook for every class completed in Forms 1-5, as well as donation information, teacher lists, and yearbook photos.

Addresses

The papers in this series form only a partial documentation of those presented by Professor Lang at conferences; a more complete list can be found in his curriculum vitae under “papers in refereed conference proceedings”, “other papers” and “invitational panels and public lectures”, covering the years 1979 to 2010. Some of the papers in this series are not listed in his c.v.

The files contain drafts of papers presented, usually with related correspondence.

Manuscripts and publications

This series documents Professor Lang’s writings, unpublished and published, over a forty-year period. He has written two books, Financing universities in Ontario (2000) and Mergers in higher education: lessons in theory and practice (2001), which was translated into Chinese and published in Shanghai in 2008. He has contributed chapters to eleven books, and had numerous papers published in refereed journals, along with review essays, other publications, papers, and reports. The research files (some contain original documents) for and a copy of his doctoral thesis, are also present in this series. The titles, where they exist, to these research files were those used by Professor Lang.

The listing of manuscripts and publications is not complete. For a complete listing of Professor Lang’s publications, see his curriculum vitae in B2011-0003/001(01). Some of his reports not present in this series can be found in other series.

Digital files from B2018-0001 include correspondence and drafts for his book Mergers in higher education: lessons in theory and practice (2001), as well as a report for the Atkinson Foundation, A Primer on Formula Funding: A Study of Student-focused Funding in Ontario (2003).

The files contain a combination of correspondence, drafts, background and research material and notes. The arrangement is chronological by date of document or date of publication.

Research projects

Most of the files in this series relate to the ‘College Choice’ project, the first study in Canada of “the effects of surveys on students as they make choices among colleges.” It was based on “a series of surveys carried out at the University of Toronto from the late 1970s and on a series or surveys and interviews of students and guidance counselors in four or five Toronto high schools with different student populations.” The files contain correspondence; compact discs of data sets, reports, and associated material; “catchment samples” and participant dossiers; data analysis and drafts of reports. Files on several other research projects follow. Research projects for which Professor Lang received external funding and which are not included in this series are listed in his curriculum vitae in B2011-0003/001 (01).

Editorial work

This series documents most of Professor Lang’s activities as a member of editorial boards, as an editorial consultant for scholarly journals and as a manuscript reviewer for the University of Toronto Press. There are no files for his work with Interchange: A Journal of Educational Studies and the Ontario Journal of Higher Education or for his work as a manuscript reviewer for the University of Toronto Press after 1999.

Professional activities (other)

This series documents professional activities other than those described in the two previous series. Included is material on consulting and special projects, boards of governors of educational institutions that Professor Lang sat on, and his association with a number of other educational agencies and groups in Canada and elsewhere. Of the last, the most documentation is on the Ontario Council on University Affairs, the Premier’s Council for Economic Renewal, and the Sweden/Ontario Bilateral Exchange Seminar for Senior Academic Administrators (1982-1983). The arrangement in this section is by name of organization or event.

The files may contain any combination of correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings, notes, and reports.

Files from B2018-0001 include further records documenting Lang’s active involvement with the Board of Trustees of the Toronto School of Theology (2008 - ; Chair, Institutional Evaluations Committee, 2014-2017) and the Board of Governors of Saint Augustine’s Seminary. His work as Chair of the Strategic Asset Study Committee (2011-2014) for the Archdiocese of Toronto is also documented.

Professional activities: Ontario. Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities

Professor Lang’s first major collaboration with the then Ministry of Colleges and Universities began in 1991 when he was a member of the Minister’s Task Force on University Accountability. Later he was involved in several joint projects with the Ministry and its successors [the Ministry of Education and Training (from 1995) and from 2000, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities] and the Council of Ontario Universities; in particular, their Steering Committee on Ontario Graduate Survey (1997-), their Joint Steering Committee on OSAP (1998-2001), and their Key Performance Indicators project (2000-2005). In 2006 he became a member of the Ministry’s Joint Working Group on Student Access Guarantee. From 2008 to 2011 he was the Ministry’s Working Group and Steering Committee on Transfer. Not all of these activities are documented in this series.

In 2006-2007 the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities undertook two inter-related research projects “aimed generally at learning about the characteristics of ‘first-generation’ students.” The first, “College Choice”, focused on the factors that influenced students in seeking post-secondary education and their choices of institutions to attend. The second, dubbed Project STAR (Student Achievement and Retention), “sought to determine the factors that influence the academic performance and retention of students in the first year of university.” It was sponsored by the Canada Millenium Scholarship Foundation and Statistics
Canada.

Files in B2018-0001 document Professor Lang's role as Special Advisor to the Deputy Minister, in particular his involvement with the negotiations between the Government of Ontario and Ontario universities regarding the second Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA2), and Ontario colleges regarding the Colleges Applied Research and Development Fund [CARDF].

Also included are files regarding the creation of a francophone university in Ontario; the Joint Working Group on Student Access Guarantee, regarding the modernization of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP); and the Steering Committee on Transfer Credits.

Professional activities: Council of Ontario Universities

The Council of Ontario Universities (COU) was formed on December 3, 1962 as the “Committee of Presidents of Provincially Assisted Universities and Colleges of Ontario,” with its current name being adopted in 1971. The mandate of the COU is to “build awareness of the university sector’s contributions to the social, economic and cultural well-being of the province and the country, as well as the issues that impact the sector’s ability to maximize these contributions.” It works with Ontario’s publicly assisted universities and one associate member institution, the Royal Military College of Canada. This series documents the activities of a number of its committees and task forces, which are detailed below, approximately in order of activity.

Professor Lang was a member of the COU’s Committee on Enrolment Statistics and Projections from 1976 to 1990. In 1982-1983 he sat on its Special Committee on BILD Administrative Procedures and from 1987 to 1991 was a member of its Research Advisory Group. In 1991 he was invited to be part of a small task force to present proposals to the government for an income contingent repayment plan for Ontario students. Throughout much of the 1990s, he was involved with the COU’s Committee on University Accountability and the Performance Indicators for the Public Postsecondary System in Ontario project, better known as the Performance Indicators Project, the purpose of which was to assess the overall Ontario postsecondary sector.

He was also a member of four task forces: Audit Guidelines (1998-2000), Secondary School Issues (1998-2005), Student Financial Assistance (2006-), and Quality Assurance (2008-2010).
The Task Force on Secondary School Issues was established to assess the evaluation of students in the new secondary school program of studies and to make recommendations regarding the monitoring of grading practices and standards.

The COU’s Quality and Productivity Task Force work was to outline “all the quality and productivity initiatives” undertaken to “showcase results for the government’s increased investment in universities.” Its report, presented in March 2006, was followed by the COU Task Force on Quality Measurements, chaired by David Naylor of the University of Toronto. It was charged with addressing the “broad issues related to quality measurement, developing the long-term strategies for COU’s work with the government and the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO).” [1]

Files in B2018-0001 include correspondence with U of T and COU colleagues, as well as further records related to his role on the COU’s Committee on University Accountability. Also included are further records about the COU's Task Force on Quality Assurance (2008-2010), including its subsequent transition and implementation phase.

University of Toronto Blues men's baseball team

This series documents Professor Lang’s years of service to the University of Toronto Blues Men’s Baseball team which he coached from 1994 to 2011. The files contain information on team lists, coaches, financing and fundraising, equipment, rosters and players, and statistical records. There is also some press coverage. There is documentation of tournaments in Columbus, Ohio (1998) and Durham College in Oshawa (1999). Photographs and digital images document the team from 1999-2007, including many images and graphics used to boost the website for the team Also included is an Ontario University Athletics medal for 2001.

Digital files in B2018-0001 include email correspondence with players, university officials, and sponsors; rosters and team photographs; and files related to the construction of a new baseball diamond on the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, which opened in 2006. In 2011, it was renamed the “Dan Lang field” in honour of his many years of service to the Varsity Blues baseball program.
