B2003-0010: Mechanical engineering student drawings by Chester B. Hamilton, student in the Ontario School of Practical Science. Produced as requirement for Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Also includes Practice Sheet dated April 1905, 3 lettering charts and "Bill of Materials for Marine Boiler, Jan. 1906. All drawings are pen and ink with some watercolour. Size: 56 cm X 38 cm. (1 box, 1903-1920)

B2003-0015: Three photographs originally belonging to engineering graduate Chester B. Hamilton Jr. documenting engineering students at the University of Toronto. Hamilton received a Diploma in 1906, a B.A.Sc in 1908 and an M.E. in 1920. Included are group portraits of students in the mechanical and drafting rooms (1906) as well as a composite portrait of the Mechanical Club 1937-38 of which Hamilton was Honorary Chairman.

Three items relating to George Harcourt who was a member of the second graduating class (1889) of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) programme, consisting of his diploma, a photograph of him in academic dress taken while head of the Department of Horticulture at the University of Alberta (1915-1936), and a copy of an article about him from "Alberta History" (summer 1991).

Most of the records in this fonds document Harris' research in the history of Higher Education, a subject on which he published widely and gave numerous addresses. Some limited documentation provides researchers with some information on his contributions to several administrative posts. There are also early lecture files on English literature which document his early teaching career and some files relating to the researching and writing of the university history although most of those records are in the records of the University Historian. Finally there are original university records collected by Harris regarding the University of Toronto Faculty Association and its predecessors.

Records of two generations of the Hastings family, relating primarily to Elgin Rowland and Mary Ferguson Hastings and their son, John Elgin Ferguson Hastings. Included are course notes and laboratory notes, certificates and photographs documenting Elgin Hastings’ years (1908 – 1913) as a medical student at the University of Toronto, and correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to his wife’s life and activities. Most of the records document the activities of John Hastings as a student, especially the University of Toronto Schools and medicine (1945 – 1954) at the University of Toronto; his career as a professor of and administrator in public health administration at the University of Toronto (1956 – 1993), and as an advisor and consultant on community and public health issues from the local to international levels. The correspondence includes many letters from contacts in India, Japan, and elsewhere internationally; there are also research materials, manuscripts of articles, books and addresses, conference files; studies, including the Royal Commission on Health Services, the Community Health Centre project, the Sault Ste. Marie study and the Canadian Caribbean Health Initiative; and files on his involvement with Canadian Council of Churches projects and with the United Church of Canada. B1985-0004: Consists of subject files on University departments and divisions, University College programmes, committees, associations, task forces, as well as other universities (including Canadian and foreign). Most of the files deal with issues surrounding the French Department, undergraduate and graduate French courses, including records on course outlines, examinations, and bibliographies (17 boxes, 1938-1985).

B1993-0014: Correspondence, minutes, announcements, invitations, memoranda and reports assembled by Professor Hayne while carrying out administrative and teaching duties at University College and the Department of French, University of Toronto (1 box, 1985-1992)

B2009-0013: This accession consists of correspondence and subject files on individuals who were colleagues of Prof. Hayne during his 40 years in the Department of French at the University of Toronto. It complements other accessions within this fonds (see list below) since many of the letters relate to the discipline of French language and literature in particular and University College and the University of Toronto in general. Correspondents include, among others, F.A.C. Jeanneret, his former teacher as an undergraduate and other colleagues at University College in the Department of French such as, Paul Perron (Chair, Department of French), C.D. Rouillard, Douglas V. le Pan, among others, and Victoria College such as Northrup Frye and David Smith. (1 box 1956-2008).

Records of Gerry Helleiner, Professor Emeritus, Department of Economics, and a pioneer in development economics, with special reference to Africa and Tanzania in particular. Includes personal and professional correspondence; his employment at Yale University and the University of Toronto, with some lecture notes; his involvement with numerous professional associations and his contracts with government and international agencies including the Commonwealth Secretariat, the North South Institute, the World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER) and the Intergovernmental Group of 24 on International Monetary Affairs (G24); grant applications and research notes; drafts of reports and manuscripts of his writings, with covering correspondence and notes; and addresses.

Fonds documents research undertaken by Gwynneth Heaton in 1993 and 1994 to investigate the provision of reference services in medical school libraries. The investigation examined factors that may affect reference service such sa the proximity of other desks providing information; the type of staff providing the service; the variety of services provided; the provision of research assistance by appointment; the physical proximity of a hospital; and the use of problem based learning in the medical school curriculum. The project involved a mail survey and follow up visits to selected medical libraries in Canada and the United States. The results of this research were published in various academic library journals.

The accession consists of correspondence, questionnaires, raw survey data, research notes and manuscripts of published and unpublished articles resulting from Ms. Heaton's research project.

Includes Bachelor of Commerce thesis (1934) and memorabilia of Eric Hehner, commerce student who graduated from Commerce and Finance in 1934. Also included are photographs of Victoria College's "Bob" performance in 1906, specifically of Frank Sternberg, uncle of Eric Hehner and graduate of Victoria College (1906).

This fonds contains the personal papers of Prof. Fritz Moritz Heichelheim, mainly while professor of classics at the University of Toronto (1948-1968) and in academic positions at Universities in Britain such as Cambridge and Nottingham University.

The largest series (Series 1) contains correspondence spanning 46 years received from friends, family and colleagues living in North America as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Correspondence is in mostly English and German depending on the language of the writer. Some of Prof. Heichelheim’s outgoing replies will be found scrawled on the back of the incoming letter or as a separate documents. The completeness of this series documents Prof. Heichelheim’s wide interest in classical studies, numismatics and papyri translation. Other series document some of his teaching and research activities, mainly at universities in England as well as his literary works on Roman and Greek history also in both English and German. No manuscripts for his major books such as his published thesis in the 1930’s or his collaborative works such as A history of the Roman people (1962) with C. A. Yeo have been found.

His extensive work in numismatics however will be found in Series 5. This series contains the manuscript and photographs for his catalogue Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Vol. IV of the General and Leake Collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge produced mainly during the late 1930’s to the 1950s. Records in this series provide some documentation on the joint project of University of Toronto and Heichelheim’s previous employer, the University of Giessen in Germany. This project directed by Prof. Heichelheim during the 1950s dealt with the translation and publication of the Giessen papyrus and ostraka (handwriting on pottery).

This fonds consists of the personal records of Karl Ferdinand Maria Helleiner, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Toronto (1942-1973), consisting of publications and manuscripts, addresses, research and lecture notes, examinations, and correspondence. The records are organized in 7 series documenting his career as city archivist of St. Pölten, Austria (1927-1938) and as a professor for over thirty years in the Department of Political Economy at the U of T, where he specialized in European economic history. Many of the records relate to his activities as a historian researching and writing various lectures and addresses, his major books "The Imperial Loans: A Study in Financial and Diplomatic History" and "Free Trade and Frustration: Anglo-Austrian Negotiations 1860-70", as well as the numerous articles and book reviews he published in peer-reviewed journals over the span of his career.

B1987-0024: Correspondence amongst members of the Henderson family including Velyien Ewart Henderson and his wife concerning family and university matters. In particular the letters relate to matters in the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiology, as well as the Faculty of Medicine, Hart House and campus societies. There are also correspondence discussing the departure of J.J.R. Macleod. (1927-1928, 1 box)

Includes correspondence (1949-1985), lecture notes and course outlines (1933-1983); student assignments, student marks, essays and examinations (printed) (1924-1983); subject files; photographs.

Fonds consists of records documenting the professional and personal life of Prof. Hassanpour, Kurdish-Iranian Marxist scholar and Professor at UofT’s Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. Material reflects key areas of Prof. Hassanpour’s research, most significantly Kurdish history and culture; the history of political movements, grassroots organization, and class struggle in Iran, Iraq and Turkey; and communication theory and sociolinguistics. Material includes correspondence with colleagues and scholars internationally, documentation of research with particular focus on Prof. Hassanpour’s dissertation and his Peasant Movement Project, records relating to conference presentations, interviews, and teaching, as well as his publishing activity.

Prof. Hassanpour was deeply invested in the preservation of Kurdish oral, visual, and textual documentary heritage as a response to the historical state suppression of cultural-political struggle of Kurdish people. Reflected in records throughout the fonds is Prof. Hassanpour’s work in pursuing the establishment of Kurdish Studies as a discipline, his work editing journals related to Kurdistan, and his effort in exposing and circulating books on Kurdish Studies to libraries and research institutions internationally. Prof. Hassanpour also actively collected and preserved Kurdish texts, dailies, and visual materials. This material is included in Series 9 (Reference material) and through bibliographic and audio material held in other repositories at the University of Toronto Libraries (please see the related material note below).

This accession consists of approximately 789 black and white photonegatives, mostly measuring 3"x4" or 4"x5". Having been commissioned by the University, the images are mainly documentary, serving as a visual record for the University of campus people, places and events. Memorabilia including programmes, snapshots, group portraits, clippings documenting two graduates of the class of 1941 who later married: Shirley Hill, UC (Law) and James Warner Eakins, BASc (Civil). Of interest are a set of napkins embroidered for Shirley Hill by her mother Gladys Legge (B.A. 1914) for her graduation and several graduation snapshots of her and her classmates, all law students. There is a few documents on class reunions, 1941 programs for U.C. Follies and Skule Nite, as well as a May 1939 Presentation of Colours program.

Consists of records such as programmes, correspondence and memorabilia as well photographs, pins and medals document Charles Higginbottom's involvement in various sports organizations including: City of Toronto Sports Recognition Committee, 1931-1941; Toronto Centennial Committee, 1934; Toronto Hockey League and Toronto Amateur Hockey Association, 1925-1940; Central YMCA Sports Forum 1945; Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association 1942-1960; Lord Dufferin School Old Boys Association , 1924-1960; St Augustine’s Men’s Club 1914-1928, Beaches Hockey League 1915-1916; Scarborough Golf and Country Club, 1928; Amateur Athletic Union of Canada, 1929-1931, Canadian Olympic Committee Centre 1939, National Boxing Committee, 1940.

Fonds also contains memorabilia and photographs documenting Higginbottom’s attendance as an official at the 1930 British Empire Games, the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Finally, there are also some records relating to his role as Bursar of the University of Toronto including some 1946 financial reports.

Photographs and negatives documenting the life of Marjorie Hill, (BASC 1920) including family pictures, graduation photographs and portraits. Also includes images of buildings she designed throughout her architectural career, sketches, miscellaneous newspaper clippings, correspondence, Hill's 1920 thesis, diplomas, certificates, cards, poems.

Correspondence, notices, programmes, articles, press clippings and photographs documenting the activities of Ethelbert Lincoln Hill [BA 1888] as an undergraduate in Arts at University College, and Robert Russell Bensley [BA 1889, MB 1892]. With Hill, the emphasis is on his athletic achievements, his involvement in student elections, and with the conversazione, and his attendance at the Ontario Normal School in 1901-02. Included are offprints of articles (1896, 1897) by and a memoir of Bensley; a lithograph of University College, n.d.; photographs of graduating class in Arts (1887) and of University College Natural Science Association general committee (1886-1887); map of City of Toronto, 188-.

This fonds contains the personal and professional papers of Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg documenting her contribution to professional astronomy, her high regard as a popular educator as well as her responsibilities as a parent, daughter, wife and friend. The records have been arranged into series either by type of record or to reflect a certain type of activity. Records documenting various aspects of her career are filed first, followed by papers reflecting her personal life.

Included is both professional and personal correspondence; records relating to her activities on associations, boards and organizations; records such as draft manuscripts, correspondence and outlines and data relating to her publishing activities and research; papers relating to her education and her teaching responsibilities; as well as diaries and family papers series.

Because Dr. Hogg's career spanned nearly seven decades during a time astronomy as a discipline was still developing both nationally and internationally, these records are not only useful to those researching Dr. Hogg's achievements but will be insightful to those researchers studying the development of astronomy as a science and profession. Moreover, Dr. Hogg was a woman in a field of science, which is still dominated by men. Those studying women's history may find Dr. Hogg's personal records a useful case study in one woman's success in a largely male dominated profession.

Contained within the Helen S. Hogg personal records are three sous-fonds: Frank S. Hogg [1922-1952], her first husband and also an astronomer at the David Dunlap Observatory; Prof. Ruth Northcott [1932-1969], close personal friend and professional colleague of Helen Hogg, also on staff at the D.D.O.; Dr. C.A. Chant [193- - 194-], director emeritus of the D.D.O and head of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Toronto from 1904-1935. These sous-fonds are individually described and have been filed after the Helen Hogg personal records.

Fonds consists of student notebooks, the Kipling Ritual handbook, engineering journals, Hydro reports and photographs related to Hogg's studies in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto.

Consists of correspondence, reports, minutes relating to women's participation in politics. Subjects include Ontario New Democratic Party Women's Committee, abortion, daycare, economic equality and family law reform.

These accessions of personal records provide a fairly complete representation of Samuel Hollander’s professional life as an academic. The accessions cover his entire career from his student days at the London School of Economics to his retirement from the University of Toronto in 1998 and his appointment at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel in 2000. Correspondence, found in the various series gives a rich commentary on his professional endeavours and gives a good overview of the debates surrounding Hollander’s work. Lecture notes and taped lectures document how his ideas were taught in the classroom and his Ph.D. files found in Series 5 show his dedication to the teaching and mentor roles for which he is so highly regarded.

Consists of correspondence of Hood with various people regarding Dr. Black and her biography (1958-1965); photocopies of correspondence of Dr. Black (1915-1934); manuscript of biography, ca 1964. Publications used in research and obituaries of Dr. Black are also included (1931-1959) (3 boxes, 1931-1965)

B1967-0005: Consists of copy of lecture and press release regarding The Croonian Lecture: "On the discovery, morphology and environment of Sinanthropus Pekinensis"delivered by Davidson Black before the Royal Society of London in 1932. Also contains a menu. (1 box, 1932)

Consists of course notes and text books relating to modern languages and history, as well as programmes and notices.

Included in this accession are the personal bound letter books belonging to educator, journalist and graduate of the University of Toronto William Houston. The two bound volumes date from Dec. 31 1883 to June 13 1891 and from July 6 1891 to Nov. 8 1895. The correspondence covers the period that Houston was a member of the University of Toronto Senate and Legislative Librarian. Also included are notes on Houston family history compiled by Mrs. Eila Hopper-Ross, grand niece of William Houston (ca. 1980s - 2000).

Fonds also includes 2 photographs: a portrait of William Houston ca. 1923 and a photograph of John Houston standing in front of the family home in Waterdorwn, 1937.

Also includes one piece of correspondence from John Houston to "cousin" Theresa McAfee (1935).

The two group portraits include the Faculty of Education Literary Executive , Fall term 1913 and an unidentified Faculty of Education sports team (possibly soccer).

B2013-0028: Portraits of William J. Houston, student in the Faculty of Education in 1913 and later a graduate of Arts (B.A. 1924) in World War I uniform. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 170th Canadian Infantry Battalion and subsequently in active service in France in 1918.

Consists of a newspaper clipping on student athletics boxing match, three U of T sports logos, three sports medals, photograph of U of T Boxing, Wrestling and Fencing Club Intercollegiate Champions, 1923-1924, taken by Peake Whittingham, Toronto.

B1994-0028: Correspondence, addresses, a report authored by Hughes regarding pharmaceutical education in Newfoundland and copies of a column he wrote regarding student life at the Ontario College of Pharmacist in "Drug Merchandising" (1928). Also includes several scrap books containing correspondence, awards, photographs, press clippings, programs and other memorabilia documenting Dr. Hughes' achievements. (4 boxes, 1929-1993)

Records in this fonds document to varying degrees the dual aspects of Prof. Hume’s career – as a computer scientist and as a teacher of physics. This fonds does not, in any substantial way, document his many administrative roles within the University of Toronto or within professional associations.

For a good overview of his career, researchers should consult Series 1 Biographical for summary information on his achievements and career highlights. Series 3 Professional Correspondence also gives a good overview of what Prof. Hume was working on at a given period of time because it is varied in content and is arranged chronologically. Additional correspondence documenting these activities specifically can be found in Series 4 Publishing, Series 6 Professional Activities and Series 7 Broadcasting and Film. His research in computer science and the many ways he disseminated that knowledge through articles, talks, published works and teaching is documented in Series 4 Publishing, Series 5 Talks and Addresses and Series 6 Teaching. Researchers should note however that manuscripts do not exist for any of the computer science textbooks for which he was so well known nor are there extensive notes, memos or correspondence that discuss writing projects except some correspondence with publishers. There is, however, a good representation of his talks and lectures as well a manuscript and typescript of his textbook Physics in Two Volumes, co-authored with Donald Ivey.

His work in educational television and film is very well documented and is contained in Series 7 Broadcasting and Film. Records in this series will be of interest to researchers studying early Canadian broadcasting, educational television, and the teaching of science – in particular physics for general consumption. Several reports found in this series discuss the themes and goals of many of the programmes.

Finally, a lighter side of Prof. Hume can be found in Series 8 Arts and Letters Club, as it relates to his involvement in the Spring Review. Records in this series would be of interest to anyone researching amateur musical theatre and arts clubs generally.

Correspondence, reports, course and lecture notes, photoprints, etc., documenting the career of H.J.C. Ireton as a professor of physics; included are files of professors James Loudon, J.C. McLennan, and E.F. Burton.

Fonds documents Allan Irving’s activities from 1976 to 1998 as a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto Faculty of Social Work; as lecturer and/or professor at King’s College (University of Western Ontario), at the Faculty of Social Work (University of Toronto), at the Nipissing College (Laurentian University) and Wilfrid Laurier University. It also partially documents his other professional and scholarly activities, publications and writings, lectures and addresses from 1978 to 1999.

Records document Milton Israel’s graduate studies at University of Michigan, and his publishing, teaching and research activities as Professor of South Asian Studies in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The records relating to his graduate studies consist of research notes and some footnote drafts for his doctoral thesis “The Anglo-Indian in defense of authority, 1905-1910”.

A significant portion of the B2002-0009 accession documents his research and teaching activities relating to South Asian settlement and migration during the 1990s and includes course materials for HIST 394, a course he developed on this topic. In addition there is correspondence and reports relating to the Sikh Studies program in the Department for the Study of Religion developed at the time he was Director for the Centre for South Asian Studies.

The B2011-0004 accession contributes significantly to his research and teaching activities, including course materials and lecture notes for HIS 101, HUM 101, HIS 232, HIS 282, HIS 364 and HIS 394, relating to British colonialism, the history of India and particularly modern India, and South Asian civilization and migration. Also included are several popular lectures and seminars that Professor Israel gave over the course of his career.

Records documenting his publication activities in Series 4 focus on primarily three projects: his book In the future soil: a social history of the Indo-Canadians in Ontario (1994), his work on Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999) while he was Chair of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario and “Safe Haven. The refugee experience of five families”, a book and exhibition produced in cooperation with the Royal Ontario Museum. Accession B2011-0004 also includes notes and correspondence regarding several published reviews and articles by Professor Israel, as well as reviews of these key publications.

An earlier accession (B1995-0052) is represented in Series 6, and includes correspondence, research material, notes and card files relating to, with drafts of, Milton Israel's book, "Communications and Power: propaganda and the press in the Indian Nationalist Struggle, 1920-1947" (1994).

This accession documents Prof. Ivey’s career as professor of physics and university administrator from the time of his appointment in 1950 to his post retirement activities up to 1994. Prof. Ivey’s career centred around the promotion and teaching of the science of physics both at the university level and the secondary school level. His personal and professional correspondence concerns these two activities. Other records document his work with high schools and the provincial Department of Education in developing curriculum for high school physics courses, as well as his administrative and academic responsibilities at the University of Toronto. An extensive collection of his lecture notes, problems and examinations for undergraduate courses in physics at the University of Toronto will also be found in this accession.

His activities outside the University are documented in the records relating to his television programmes prepared for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and other public television companies. This accession contains many complete scripts of these programs including “The Nature of Things” series in the 1960’s. In addition this accession holds a very complete series of addresses including manuscripts, notes and correspondence.

While Prof. Ivey did publish articles and two textbooks on physics during his academic career, little original documentation in the form of manuscripts has survived. Correspondence on publishing may be found within his professional correspondence.

The fonds consists of the personal papers of Gilbert Edward Jackson, a former professor of economics at the University of Toronto. Compiled from inventories of three accessions, the fonds documents Mr. Jackson’s career, participation and achievements as an economist, consultant and professor in Canada and England, during the early 1920s to late 1950s, with the greatest emphasis being on the mid 1930s to early 1950s. Arranged chronologically by function, the fond is divided into ten series. They include: Personal material, related to various activities, accomplishments and events that occurred in Mr. Jackson’s private life; Teaching activities; Manuscripts written by Mr. Jackson; the Canadian Tariff Board; the National War Labour Board; the National Selective Service Advisory Board; Other Federal Government research and reports; the Bank of England; his consulting firm, Gilbert Jackson & Associates; and Photographs.

Within the fonds, a cross over among these series exists as the research Mr. Jackson completed for himself was also utilized for assignments produced for other consulting economists and firms. For instance, the research that was completed to write submissions to the Canadian Tariff Board (Series 4) was also utilized to publish articles located in Series 3 (Manuscripts) and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates). Related topics can also be found in Series 5 (National War Labour Board) through Series 7 (Other Federal Government research and reports, as they document the extensiveness of Mr. Jackson’s involvement and research completed for the Federal Government of Canada between the late 1920s to 1950s. Although the material within the series are for different Boards, this cross over among the series documents Mr. Jackson’s involvement and active role within the world of Canadian economics during the mid twentieth century.

Although Mr. Jackson taught at the University of Toronto for roughly 15 years, only a small amount of records exist in the fonds that document his teaching career. The records that do exist in Series 2, (Teaching activities) provide a brief overview of the themes covered and issues addressed during his lectures delivered in the 1950’s. However, additional documents related to Mr. Jackson’s academic career at the University of Toronto can be found in Series 3 (Manuscripts), the correspondence in Series 8 (Bank of England), and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates) as the records within the files highlight his relationships, activities, teaching and mentoring of graduate students who attended the University of Toronto.

This fonds will be of great interest to researchers studying the financial condition of Canada and England during the Great Depression and First and Second World Wars. An individual who sharpened the minds of the youth at the time, Gilbert Jackson’s fonds documents the ideologies that shaped the economic world of today, as “it has been said that half the leading economists in Canada today studied under him” [1]

B2000-0017: Correspondence and programs of annual meetings of the Janes Surgical Society. This surgical fellowship was established in 1954 by surgeons who were residents under the tenure of Robert Meredith Janes, Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1947-1957. There is also a brief history of the society as well as photos of Dr. and Mrs Janes and a group photo of the Gallie - Janes Course, 1950-51. (1 box, 1950-[199-])

B2001-0009: Three binders of biographies of members of the Janes Surgical Society. Each card includes photographs of the member and his (her) spouse, personal information and a list of professional appointments and accomplishments. Cards are arranged alphabetically within each binder. A copy of "The Janes Surgical Society. An Illustrated History", by Alan Carrie, Stephen E. O'Brien and Charles R. B2009-0012: Correspondence, programs, minutes and other records concerning the Annual meetings of the members of the Society. Members of the Society included medical practicioners who were former students of Dr. Robert Meredith Janes, professor in the Faculty of Medicine's postgraduate surgical training course. Photos include portraits of Dr. Janes, group photo of members on trip to Britain, 1964, and group photo ca 2008 (1955-2008). (2 boxes, 1955-2008)

Approximately 3500 to 4000, 3.25 x 4.25 inch glass plate negatives and roll film negatives taken by K.B. Jackson, Chairman of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science from 1942 to 1963. Subjects include: the W.W.I. military from Canada (Petawawa) and Europe; France, Germany, England and Scotland (1923); and Jackson family photos. Many of the photographs concern the University of Toronto: exteriors and interiors of professors’ houses (1920-1939); portraits of university professors (1920-1939); Hart House theatricals and Camera Club; and the first snowmobile prototype. There are also photographic land survey experiments, photographic aerial survey experiments, and physics lab experiments.

This accession contains both personal and professional records created and collected by Dr. L.E. Jones, professor of engineering. Although a small percentage of this fonds documents his personal life, the vast majority of material was created after his retirement in 1972, which he created in his capacity as Faculty Archivist and Professor Emeritus. The paucity of information from the earlier years can be attributed to the loss of many of his records during the Sir Sandford Fleming building fire in 1977.

The records have been arranged into series to reflect either the type of record or the activity involved. Records documenting Jones’ personal life are filed first, followed by papers documenting both the personal, professional and academic projects and activities that he worked on during his life. There are also special series dedicated to the archival information and records that he collected as Engineering Archivist. Photographs have been placed at the end in Series XI.

Some of the records that are included in this fonds include Professor Jones personal documents such as: his student workbooks and thesis, his letters to the editor, correspondence, and activities with his church and the Hart House Glee Club. Most of the records pertain to his professional activities and consist of documents such as: correspondence, publications, lectures and student marks. There are also a significant number of files that document his involvement in Faculty activities such as the Iron Ring Ceremony, the Hall of Distinction and the Centennial and Sesquicentennial celebrations. The work that he undertook for the Faculty providing calligraphy for the inscriptions on the awards and medals that were granted by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering are also documented in many of the files. Finally, two series are dedicated to the articles that he collected documenting the history of the Faculty as well as the archival items that he acquired as Engineering Archivist.

Despite the fact that most of the records in this fonds document Professor Jones’ personal and professional activities after his retirement, they provide an interesting glimpse into his life while assuming the role of Engineering Archivist and Professor Emeritus. As the Engineering Archivist, Jones collected a variety of rich and interesting documents pertaining to some of the early pioneers within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. In addition to collecting material, Jones also documented the Faculty by photographing notable individuals and events. This fonds would therefore be useful to those individuals interested in examining the life of Professor Jones, as well as researchers who wish to delve into the history of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

Records acquired in 2019 include drafts and notes related to the writing of his PhD thesis titled, “The undular surge in an open channel” (1941); early lecture notes and files relating to his teaching, in particular photography; further professional correspondence and memos related to his role as Engineering Archivist; additional items he collected as Engineering Archivist, in particular belonging to and/or about Prof. Louis B. Stewart and Prof. J.W. Melson; collected ephemera, artifacts, and photos about the University and the Faculty of Engineering.

This fonds consists of one accession of personal papers of Prof. Phyllis E. Jones. It contains primarily records relating to her career with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto and manuscripts of her published and unpublished works relating to community health and nursing education. Among the records relating to her personal life and education (Series 1) will be found certificates, photographs and a scrapbook maintained during her years as a student in the General Nursing and Public Health Nursing, Part 1 diploma programme between 1944 and 1946. Series 2 documents her activities as a faculty member including copies of early planning reports relating to the School of Nursing prepared by former directors such as Helen Carpenter and Florence Emory, as well as records generated during her tenure as Dean of the Faculty.

Copies of some of her published and numerous unpublished papers and presentations are contained in Series 3.

This fonds unfortunately does not contain any of her lectures or teaching materials or research notes. There is little information relating to her professional activities with the Victorian Order of Nurses, Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, the Metropolitan Toronto District Health Council or Toronto area teaching hospitals.
