B1993-0014: Correspondence, minutes, announcements, invitations, memoranda and reports assembled by Professor Hayne while carrying out administrative and teaching duties at University College and the Department of French, University of Toronto (1 box, 1985-1992)

B2009-0013: This accession consists of correspondence and subject files on individuals who were colleagues of Prof. Hayne during his 40 years in the Department of French at the University of Toronto. It complements other accessions within this fonds (see list below) since many of the letters relate to the discipline of French language and literature in particular and University College and the University of Toronto in general. Correspondents include, among others, F.A.C. Jeanneret, his former teacher as an undergraduate and other colleagues at University College in the Department of French such as, Paul Perron (Chair, Department of French), C.D. Rouillard, Douglas V. le Pan, among others, and Victoria College such as Northrup Frye and David Smith. (1 box 1956-2008).

This fonds contains records related to the teaching, researching and publishing activities of Dr. Betty I. Roots, biologist and professor at the University of Toronto. The series documenting Dr. Roots’ research is by far the largest, with smaller series documenting her involvement with professional associations and committees, her roles as a peer editor and reviewer, as well as a supervisor of her graduate students, her addresses, the courses she taught, her correspondence and her early education. There is also a relatively large amount of material documenting her administrative activities within the University of Toronto.

Records include correspondence, notebooks, research data, manuscripts, lecture notes, prints, and reports.

The material covers almost exclusively her professional roles with very little personal material of any kind. Of this material, most of it documents her researching and publishing pursuits.

Most of the fonds can be fond in B1993-0050: Correspondence, addresses, manuscripts, diaries, minutes, reports, publications, film scripts, posters, certificates, photographs, artifacts, and film documenting Dr. Wilson's activities as a geophysicist, especially in relation to his research work and writings on continental drift, as Director-General of the Ontario Science Centre, and as a member of many commissions, committees and professional associations, often at the highest levels.

Accession B2002-0007 (1 box; 1989-1993) consists of personal papers of Prof. J. Tuzo Wilson including correspondence, manuscripts of articles and unpublished works such as draft autobiography. Also includes records created after his death and maintained by his secretary Moira Arnot. This accession is not further described in the series.

Accession B2014-0025 is filed in Series 19 (Graphic material): Photographs document a meeting of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics XI Assembly that took place at the University of Toronto, September 3 – 14 1957. Tuzo Wilson was vice president of the IUGG and chairman of the arrangements committee. In addition, this accession includes an early hand drawn rendering depicting the movement of tectonic plates, drawn by Wilson sometime in the early 1960s.

This fonds documents Professor Kenneth McNeill's research and publishing activities through professional correspondence (Series 1), drafts and typescript of articles, reviews, addresses, referee reports, research data and notes (Series 2 &3). Series 3, in particular, documents research undertaken in the Steel Room in the Department of Physics. Series 4, 5 and 6 document some of his administrative duties within the University and in particular Electron Linear Accelerator committee, and the Radiation Protection Authority. Lecture notes (Series 7) from courses taught both at the University of Glasgow (1952-1957) and at the University of Toronto (1958-1996) document his teaching responsibilities, while early course notes (Series 9) document his education at Oxford in the 1940s.

Prof. McNeill was also an active consultant outside the University, mainly for government but also for industry. Series 8 contains files relating to this consultancy work and in particular to his work on nuclear preparedness for Emergency Planning Ontario, a department within the Ontario Solicitor General’s office. Series 10 contains the collected material for a study on radon levels in Newfoundland mines that Prof. McNeill did for the Atomic Energy Board of Canada.

Mr. Pieters was an active participant in the development of Caribbean students' activities such as the West Indian Students Association. As a student teacher at the Faculty of Education he was active in the Future Teachers Club, a group devoted to promoting teaching as a profession for African Canadians. Included are correspondence, brochures, flyers, clippings, photographs, reports and notes.

Harold I. Nelson fonds

This fonds documents Prof. Nelson’s career as a historian, teacher and scholar. While he was not a prolific writer, records in this fond indicate he was a detailed and meticulous researcher who sought to integrate his research into his course teachings. Series 3 Journals, Series 6 Research Notes and Series 7 Lecture Notes, give evidence to this amalgamation between research and classroom. As well, much of his correspondence found in Series 1 Professional Correspondence, and Series 2 Letters of Reference and Recommendations document his relationship with students both while he was their professor and later as these students graduated and applied for employment positions, grants, and/or admission to graduate school. Moreover, the extensive comments and evaluations of student work, documented again in Series 2 Letters of Reference and Recommendations as well as in Sub-Series 8.1 Marks and Comments on Student Work, show the care he took in evaluating and imparting his knowledge to students. The fact that many of his administrative positions and roles on committees tended to focus on curriculum and student experience, indicates how important Prof. Nelson considered his role as educator. These are documented in Series 9 University of Toronto Administration and Series 10 Associations and Committees.

It is important to note the records that were not kept as a result of processing this fonds. Research notes on both primary and secondary sources were only kept when the notes themselves showed some analysis of content. Since most of Prof. Nelson’s research was done before computers and much of it before photocopiers were widely available, most of his research notes were transcriptions or summarized notes from sources. These were often typed up as well and/or written onto index cards and organized into topic. Most of these types of research notes were culled from the fonds.

Records that relate to his role as editor of the International Journal were not found among his papers and so are absent from this fonds. Removed from this fonds were his files as Chair of the International Studies Program. These were accessioned as University Records see - A2009-0006.

No personal or family records are contained herein.

Series 1 consists of subject files broadly documenting Lawrence Smith’s teaching, publishing, administrative and consulting activities. Series 4 contains records dealing with administrative matters when Professor Smith was Director of Economics and Associate Chairman of Department of Political Economy. Series 5 documents speeches given and conferences attended by Smith in his capacity as an academic and consultant. Finally, Series 6 pertains to Lawrence Smith’s career as an economic consultant for various public and private organizations.

Four chronologically ordered volumes relating to research carried out by Professor George F Wright on Second World War defence projects for the federal government of Canada through the National Research Council of Canada.

The first volume is Defence Project CE-12 and encompassses the dates December, 1939 to June, 1942. It contains a series of chemical research reports related to wartime defence initiatives. The following three volumes consists of reports to ACE (Associate Commitee on Explosives) covering the dates August 1944 to June 1945. They contain reports, previously marked 'secret' relating to wartime research and experimentation on the explosive properties of compounds. Some of the reports contain photographs tipped in; there is also a file of loose photographs and correspondence.

B2000-0028: The records document the Women's Auxiliary of the University Settlement. The Women's Auxiliary was established in 1920, ten years after the creation of the University Settlement. The records in this accession consists of histories of the Women's auxiliary, its constitution, lists of members, correspondence and minutes from their committee meetings. Files also document the University Settlement Board meetings, the Camp Boulderwood initiative, and literature distributed by the University Settlement itself. Also includes a photograph of Marilyn MacDonald, president of the Women's Auxiliary University Settlement accepting the Annual Commnunity Leadership Award on behald of the auxiliary.

B2001-0010: The records document the Women's Auxiliary of the University Settlement. This collection consists of 430 stereographs. They were assembled primarily by Sir Daniel Wilson and likely his daughter Sybil after his death. They document his interests in photography, especially of antiquarian Scotland and ethnology, and include many images of places he visited in Canada and the United States such as the White Mountains in New Hampshire where, on holidays, he painted many watercolours. Also included here are images of Toronto, the University of Toronto, the Toronto Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory, and two of the American Civil War.

Note on Sir Daniel Wilson

Sir Daniel Wilson was an accomplished amateur artist and much interested in the new medium of photography. He collected photographs, primarily in the stereographic medium, wherever he travelled and asked his friends to send images to him. He travelled widely following his arrival in Canada in 1853. In his first decade “he went as far south as Virginia and Kentucky, as far east as Prout’s Neck, Maine, as far west as the St. Louis River, and as far north as Lake Nipigon” [1]. He travelled many times along the St. Lawrence River and the Saguenay in that decade and later, made two trips to the upper Great Lakes (1855 and 1866), was introduced to the Green Mountains in New Hampshire and the Adirondacks and historic sites in New York, and in 1862 visited Washington and Civil War battle sites in Virginia. In 1863 he returned to Britain and Europe for the first time (he would go to again in 1878, 1880, 1885 and 1891). In the 1870s, his travels to him along the Muskoka and Severn Rivers (1870), and to Native sites in Kentucky and Ohio (1874).

After Wilson became President of University College in 1880, he sought escape from the heat of Toronto summers in New Hampshire and the eastern seaboard of the United States. In August of 1881 he first visited the White Mountains in New Hampshire where he was inspired to take up painting again, and to which he returned in 1882, 1883, 1886, and from 1887 to 1890. There, with his wife Margaret until her death in 1885, and his daughter Sybil, he sought out sites “with indelibly North American names, in which he clearly revelled” – Black Mountain, Cascade Brook, Mount Osceola, Mount Tecumseth, the Mad River, and Scar Ridge [2]. In 1883 he vacationed along the Atlantic coast of Maine and in 1884 he went to the Adirondacks around Lake Placid.
